There are four different system combinations avail-
able on the RS models. The available radio options
are:
²AM/FM Cassette
²AM/FM Compact Disc with Compact Disc
Changer
²AM/FM Cassette with single Compact Disc
Player
²AM/FM Cassette with Compact Disc Changer
All factory installed radio receivers are stereo Elec-
tronically Tuned Radios (ETR) and include and elec-
tronic digital clock function.
OPERATION
Operating instructions for the factory installed
audio systems can be found in the Owner's Manual
provided with this vehicle.

ANTENNA BODY & CABLE
DESCRIPTION
All models use a fixed-length stainless steel rod-
type antenna mast, installed at the right front fender
of the vehicle. The antenna mast is connected to the
center wire of the coaxial antenna cable, and is not
grounded to any part of the vehicle.
OPERATION
To minimize static, the antenna base must have a
good ground. The coaxial antenna cable shield (the
outer wire mesh of the cable) is grounded to the
antenna base and the radio chassis.
The antenna coaxial cable has an additional dis-
connect, located near the right end of the instrument
panel. This additional disconnect allows the instru-
ment panel assembly to be removed and installed
without removing the radio.
The factory-installed Electronically Tuned Radios
(ETRs) automatically compensate for radio antenna
trim. Therefore, no antenna trimmer adjustment is
required or possible when replacing the receiver or
the antenna.

The ohmmeter test lead connections for each test
are shown in (Fig. 1).

TEST 1
Test 1 determines of the antenna mast is insulated
from the base. Proceed as follows:
(1) Unplug the antenna coaxial cable from the
radio chassis and isolate. Remove the antenna mast.
(2) Connect an ohmmeter test lead to the inside
center of the antenna base. Connect the other test
lead to a metallic portion on the outside of the
antenna base. Check for continuity.
(3) There should be no continuity. If continuity is
found, replace the faulty or damaged antenna base
and cable assembly.
TEST 2
Test 2 checks the antenna for an open circuit as
follows:
(1) Unplug the antenna coaxial cable connector
from the radio chassis. Remove the antenna mast.
The painted mast prevents measurement directly
through the mast.
(2) Connect an ohmmeter test lead to the inside
center of the antenna base. Connect the other test
lead to the center pin of the antenna coaxial cable
connector.
(3) Continuity should exist (the ohmmeter should
only register a fraction of an ohm). High or infinite
resistance indicates damage to the base and cable
assembly. Replace the faulty base and cable if
required.
TEST 3
Test 3 checks the condition of the ground between
the antenna base and the vehicle body as follows:
(1) Connect one ohmmeter test lead to the fender
on an exposed metal area (paint and e-coat must be
penetrated to obtain continuity). Connect the other
test lead to the outer crimp on the antenna coaxial
cable connector.
(2) The resistance should be less than (1) ohm.
(3) If the resistance is more than (1) ohm, clean
and/or tighten the antenna base to the fender mount-
ing hardware.
REMOVAL
ANTENNA MAST AND CABLE LEAD
(1) Remove glove box from instrument panel,
(Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENT PANEL/GLOVE
BOX - REMOVAL).
(2) Disconnect antenna cable connector from exten-
sion cable (Fig. 2).
(3) Remove right kick trim panel.
(4) Disengage rubber grommet insulator from door
hinge pillar.
(5) Pull antenna cable through hinge pillar into
opening between door hinges.(6) Hoist and support vehicle on safety stands.
(7) Remove front wheel.
(8) Remove front wheelhouse splash shield. (Refer
to 23 - BODY/EXTERIOR/LF WHEELHOUSE
SPLASH SHIELD - REMOVAL).
(9) Remove antenna mast from antenna base (Fig.
3).
(10) Remove plastic cap from the cap nut. Using
cap nut tool, remove cap nut holding antenna base to
front fender (Fig. 4).
(11) Remove antenna base from under front fender.
ANTENNA EXTENSION CABLE
(1) Remove glove box. (Refer to 23 - BODY/IN-
STRUMENT PANEL/GLOVE BOX - REMOVAL).
(2) Disconnect extension cable end from antenna
cable end.
(3) Disconnect cable hanger clip from HVAC unit.
(4) Remove radio as necessary to gain access to
extension cable. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/AUDIO/
RADIO - REMOVAL).
(5) Disconnect extension cable from back of radio.
(6) Remove extension cable from vehicle.
INSTALLATION
ANTENNA MAST AND CABLE LEAD
(1) Install antenna base to underside of front
fender.
(2) Install cap nut holding antenna base to front
fender.
(3) Install plastic cap to the cap nut.
(4) Install antenna mast to antenna base.
(5) Install front wheelhouse splash shield.
(6) Install front wheel.
(7) Lower vehicle.
(8) Push antenna cable through opening in hinge
pillar.
(9) Insert rubber grommet into door hinge pillar.
(10) Install kick panel.
(11) Connect antenna cable connector to extension
cable.
(12) Install glove box to instrument panel.
ANTENNA EXTENSION CABLE
(1) Install extension cable to vehicle.
(2) Connect extension cable to back of radio.
(3) Install radio. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/AU-
DIO/RADIO - INSTALLATION).
(4) Connect cable hanger clip to HVAC unit.
(5) Connect extension cable end to antenna cable
end.
(6) Install glove box. (Refer to 23 - BODY/IN-
STRUMENT PANEL/GLOVE BOX - INSTALLA-
TION).

OK, repair the open circuit to the battery as
required.
(3) Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
Check for battery voltage at the fuse in the junction
block. If OK, go to Step 4. If not OK, repair the open
circuit to the ignition switch as required.
(4) Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Disconnect and isolate the battery negative cable.
Remove the radio, but do not unplug the wire har-
ness connectors. Check for continuity between the
radio chassis and a good ground. There should be
continuity. If OK, go to Step 5. If not OK, repair the
open radio chassis ground circuit as required.
(5) Connect the battery negative cable. Turn the
ignition switch to the ON position. Check for battery
voltage at the fused ignition switch output circuit
cavity of the left (gray) radio wire harness connector.
If OK, go to Step 6. If not OK, repair the open circuit
as required.
(6) Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
Check for battery voltage at the fused B(+) circuit
cavity of the left (gray) radio wire harness connector.
If OK, replace the faulty radio. If not OK, repair the
open circuit to the Ignition-Off Draw (IOD) fuse as
required.
REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable.
(2) Remove cup holder.
(3) Remove trim panel above cupholder by pulling
straight out.
(4) Remove center instrument panel trim panel.
(5) Remove screws holding radio to instrument
panel.
(6) Pull radio rearward to gain access to the back
of radio (Fig. 10).
(7) Disconnect antenna cable from back of radio.
(8) Remove bolt holding ground strap to the radio.
(9) Disconnect the wire connectors from the back
of the radio.
INSTALLATION
(1) Connect wire harness to back of radio.
(2) Install bolt holding ground strap to the radio.
(3) Connect antenna cable to back of radio.
(4) Position radio into instrument panel.
(5) Install screws holding radio to instrument
panel.
(6) Install center instrument panel trim.
(7) Install trim panel above cupholder.
(8) Install cupholder.
(9) Connect battery negative cable.
RADIO NOISE SUPPRESSION
COMPONENTS
DESCRIPTION
Numerous ground straps are placed throughout the
vehicle for interference elimination (Fig. 11), (Fig.
12), (Fig. 13), (Fig. 14).
OPERATION
If receiving ignition/engine interference noise on
the radio stations, check and clean all engine and
body ground connections. Ensure all ground connec-
tions are without corrosion. Tighten properly after
cleaning.

DESCRIPTION
The quarter glass integral antenna element is
bonded to the right rear quarter glass and is replaced
with the glass assembly only (Fig. 1).
OPERATION
The integral antenna receives RF (Radio Frequen-
cies) and sends them to the antenna module for
amplification.
DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - QUARTER GLASS
INTEGRAL ANTENNA
The antenna grid pattern is divided into two sepa-
rate patterns. Each terminal connects to a separate
grid pattern, one for AM and the other for FM.
For circuit descriptions and diagrams, refer to the
appropriate wiring information. The wiring informa-
tion includes wiring diagrams, proper wire and con-
nector repair procedures, details of wire harness
routing and retention, connector pin-out information
and location views for the various wire harness con-
nectors, splices and grounds. To detect breaks in the
integral antenna elements, the following procedure is
required:
(1) Disconnect the antenna module connector from
the antenna terminals on the glass.
(2) Using an ohmmeter, place a lead on one of the
terminals and check each end of the grid pattern con-
nected to this terminal for continuity. If continuity is
not present, move one lead through the grid in pro-
gression starting at the terminal with the other lead
on the terminal until continuity is lost. Repeat pro-
cedure for the other terminal. A break in the antenna
grid can be repaired using a Mopar Rear Window
Defogger Repair Kit (Part Number 4267922) or
equivalent. (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/HEATED
GLASS/WINDSHIELD GRID - STANDARD PROCE-
DURE).

ANTENNA MODULE
DESCRIPTION
The antenna module is an electromagnetic circuit
component designed to capture and enhance RF
(Radio Frequency) signals in both the AM and FM
broadcast bands. The antenna module is mounted to
the right rear roof rail under the headliner. The mod-
ule is grounded through the mounting bracket and
fastener. The module has a two wire electrical con-
nector that connects to the integral radio antenna,located on the right rear quarter glass. There is also
an electrical connector for battery voltage and a coax
cable connector.OPERATION
The antenna module receives both AM and FM
radio signals supplied by the side window integral
radio antenna system and selectively amplifies them.
The amplified signal is then sent through the body
length coax cable to the radio input.

REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect and isolate the battery negative
cable.
(2) Lower headliner as necessary to access
antenna module (Fig. 2).
(3) Disconnect antenna coax cable lead and electri-
cal harness connector from antenna module.
(4) Disconnect the antenna module connector from
the quarter glass.
(5) Remove the mounting screw and the antenna
module.
INSTALLATION
(1) Install the antenna module and the mounting
fastener.
(2) Connect the antenna connector to the quarter
glass.
(3) Connect the antenna lead and electrical con-
nector to the antenna module.
(4) Raise and install headliner.
(5) Connect the battery negative cable.

(4) To erase DTC's, use the ªErase Trouble Codeº
data screen on the DRB scan tool.Do not erase any
DTC's until problems have been investigated
and repairs have been performed.
OBTAINING DTC'S USING IGNITION KEY
(1) Cycle the ignition key On - Off - On - Off - On
within 5 seconds.
(2) The Odometer will show the P-code for the
DTC code number. Refer to the Emission section for
the DTC chart for a detailed explanation of the DTC
codes.
(3) If no DTC's are present, the cluster will display
one of two texts: ªP1684º and ªdoneº or only ªdoneº.
²P1684 is only a status and indicates that the
PCM memory has been cleared within the last 50
ignition cycles and does not indicate a problem.
²done indicates that NO DTCs are present and
the procedure is complete.
REMOVAL
(1) Disconnect the negative battery cable.
(2) Remove the battery shield, refer to the Battery
section for more information.
(3) Remove the 2 upper PCM bracket bolts (Fig.
11).
(4) Remove the 2 PCM connectors.
(5) Remove the headlamp, refer to the Lamps sec-
tion for more information.
(6) Remove the lower PCM mounting bolt (Fig. 12).(7) Remove PCM.
INSTALLATION
(1) Install the PCM.
(2) Install the lower PCM mounting bolt. Tighten
bolt.
(3) Install the 2 upper PCM bracket bolts. Tighten
bolt.
(4) Install the headlamp, refer to the Lamps sec-
tion for more information.
(5) Install the 2 PCM connectors.
(6) Install the battery shield, refer to the Battery
section for more information.
(7) Connect the negative battery cable.
SENTRY KEY IMMOBILIZER
MODULE
DESCRIPTION
The Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM) con-
tains a Radio Frequency (RF) transceiver and a
microprocessor. The SKIM retains in memory the ID
numbers of any Sentry Key that is programmed to it.
The maximum number of keys that may be pro-
grammed to each module is eight (8). The SKIM also
communicates over the PCI bus with the Powertrain
Control Module (PCM), the Body Control Module
(BCM), and the DRB IIItscan tool. The SKIM trans-
mits and receives RF signals through a tuned
antenna enclosed within a molded plastic ring forma-
tion that is integral to the SKIM housing. When the

OPERATION
Each Sentry Key has a unique transponder identi-
fication code permanently programmed into it by the
manufacturer. Likewise, the SKIM has a unique
9Secret Key9code programmed into it by the manu-
facturer as well. When a Sentry Key is programmed
into the memory of the SKIM, the SKIM stores the
transponder identification code from the Sentry Key,
and the Sentry Key learns the9Secret Key9code from
the SKIM. Once the Sentry Key learns the9Secret
Key9code of the SKIM, it is also permanently pro-
grammed into the transponder's memory. Therefore,
blank keys for the SKIS must be programmed by the
SKIM in addition to being cut to match the mechan-
ical coding of the ignition lock cylinder. Refer to Elec-
trical, Vehicle Theft Security, Transponder Key,
Standard Procedure - Transponder Programming.
The Sentry Key's transponder is within the range
of the SKIM's transceiver antenna ring when it is
inserted into the ignition lock cylinder. When the
ignition switch is turned to the ON position, the
SKIM communicates with the Sentry Key via a radio
frequency (RF) signal. The SKIM determines if a
valid key is present based on the information it
receives from the Sentry Key. If a valid key is
detected, that fact is communicated to the PCM via
the PCI bus and the vehicle is allowed to continue
running. If an invalid key is received by the PCM or
no status at all is communicated, the vehicle will
stall after two (2) seconds of running. The indicator
light will be flashing at this point. The Sentry Key's
transponder can not be repaired. If it is faulty or

Common communication problems:
²Two transponder keys too close together.
²Speed Pass too close to transponder key.
Solid indicator that there is a system failure.
²Loss of PCM communication.
²Failed antenna circuit.
STANDARD PROCEDURE - TRANSPONDER
PROGRAMMING
USING A DRB IIITSCAN TOOL
All Sentry Keys included with the vehicle are pre-
programmed to work with the Sentry Key Immobi-
lizer System (SKIS) when it is shipped from the
factory. The Sentry Key Immobilizer Module (SKIM)
can be programmed to recognize up to a total of eight
Sentry Keys. When programming a blank Sentry Key
transponder, the key must first be cut to match the
ignition lock cylinder of the vehicle for which it will
be used. The vehicle's four digit PIN code will be
required to complete this task since you will need it
to enter the Secured Access Mode in the SKIM. Thefollowing steps must be completed using a DRB IIIt
scan tool:
(1) Insert the blank key into the ignition and turn
it to the RUN position.
(2) Using a DRB IIItscan tool, select9Theft
Alarm,99SKIM,99Miscellaneous,9and then9Program
New Key.9
(3) Enter the four digit PIN code using the DRB
IIItscan tool. When programming is completed, the
SKIM will exit Secured Access Mode and the DRB
IIItscan tool will display the results of your attempt
to program the key. One of five distinct results may
be displayed. All five are listed below:
²(Programming Successful(is displayed if the
Sentry Key programming is successful.
²(Learned Key in Ignition(is displayed if the
key in the ignition has already been programmed
into that vehicle's SKIM.
²(Eight Keys Already Learned (At The Maxi-
mum) Programming Not Done(is displayed if
eight keys have already been programmed into the
SKIM. In this case, if a new key needs to be added
due to a lost or defective key, the9Erase All Keys9
command (which requires entering the Secured
Access Mode) has to be performed. Following the
9Erase All Keys9command, all keys that will be used
to operate the vehicleMUSTbe reprogrammed to
the SKIM.
²(Programming Not Attempted(is displayed
after an9Erase All Keys9function is executed.
²(Programming Key Failed(is displayed if fur-
ther diagnosis is required.
To learn additional keys, turn the ignition OFF,
remove the learned key, insert the next new blank
key, and repeat the steps from the beginning.
ªCUSTOMER LEARNº MODE
This feature is only available on domestic vehicles
or those which have a U.S. country code designator.
This procedure requires access to at least two valid
Sentry Keys. If two valid Sentry Keys are not avail-
able, Sentry Key programming will require the use of
a DRB IIItscan tool.
The steps required to program Sentry Keys with
two valid Sentry Keys follows:
(1) Obtain the blank Sentry Key(s) that need to be
programmed. Cut the keys to match the ignition lock
cylinder mechanical key codes.
(2) Insert one of the two valid Sentry Keys into the
ignition switch and turn the ignition switch to the
ON position.
(3) After the ignition switch has been in the ON
position for longer than three seconds, but no more
than fifteen seconds, cycle the ignition switch back to
