At pick-up, the ESP system control unit will maintain the
braking pressure at the wheels until the necessary engine
torque for moving away is reached or, in any case, for a
maximum of 1.75 seconds in order to move easily from
the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.
If the vehicle has not departed after this time, the system
will deactivate automatically by gradually releasing the brak-
ing pressure.
During this release stage, the typical brake disengagement
noise indicating that the vehicle is going to move immi-
nently will be heard.
Failure indications
System failure is indicated by the turning on of warning
light
*in the instrument panel with digital display and
warning light
áin the instrument panel with multifunction
display (for versions/markets where provided) (see sec-
tion “Warning lights and messages”).
IMPORTANT The Hill Holder system is not a parking
brake; therefore, never leave the vehicle without having
engaged the handbrake, turned the engine off and engaged
the first gear. FAILURE INDICATIONS
In the event of a failure, the ESP will be automatically
switched off and the
áwarning light will come on per-
manently in the instrument panel along with a message in
the multifunction display (for versions/markets where pro-
vided) (see “Warning lights and messages” section). The
LED on the ASR OFF button will also light up. Contact the
Fiat Service Network as soon as possible if this happens.
Do not take unnecessary risks, even if your
vehicle is fitted with an ESP system. Your
driving style must always be suited to the road
conditions, visibility and traffic. The driver is al-
ways ultimately responsible for road safety.
WARNING
HILL HOLDER SYSTEM
This is an integral part of the ESP system and facilitates
hill starts. It is automatically activated in the following con-
ditions:
❒uphill: vehicle stationary on a road with a gradient high-
er than 5%, engine running, brake pedal pressed and
gearbox in neutral or gear other than reverse;
❒downhill: vehicle stationary on a road with a gradient
higher than 5 per cent, engine running, brake pedal de-
pressed and reverse gear engaged. For the correct operation of the ESP and
ASR systems, the tyres must absolutely be
the same make and type on all wheels, in perfect
condition and, above all, of the type, make and
size specified.

START&STOP SYSTEM
FOREWORD
The Start&Stop device automatically stops the engine each
time the vehicle is stationary and starts it again when the
driver wants to move off.
This improves the efficiency of the vehicle by reducing fu-
el consumption, the emission of harmful gases and noise
pollution.
The system is activated each time the vehicle is started.
OPERATING MODES
Engine cut-out mode
WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSION
With the vehicle stationary, the engine cuts out with the
gearbox in neutral and the clutch pedal released.

GENERAL WARNINGS
❒When parking, pay special attention to obstacles that
may be set above or below the sensors.
❒Sometimes, objects located very near the rear of the
vehicle are not detected and could therefore damage
the vehicle or be damaged themselves.
❒The signals sent out by the sensors can be altered by
dirt, snow or ice deposited on the sensors or by ul-
trasound systems (e.g. truck pneumatic brakes or pneu-
matic drills) near the vehicle.
❒The parking sensors work properly with the swing
doors closed. If they are open, they can cause the sys-
tem to send false signals: always close the rear doors.
The ultimate responsibility when parking
and carrying out other dangerous ma-
noeuvres still rests with the driver. When park-
ing, make sure that no-one is standing in the area,
especially children or animals. Parking sensors are
designed to assist drivers; however, you must al-
ways concentrate fully during potentially danger-
ous manoeuvres, even if carried out at low speeds.

WITH ROBOTISED GEARBOX
The engine cuts out if the vehicle stops with the brake ped-
al pressed.
This condition can be maintained even if the brake pedal
is not depressed, if the gear lever is in position N.
N.B.: The engine can only be stopped automatically after
a speed of about 10 Km/h is reached, to prevent the en-
gine from being repeatedly stopped when driving at walk-
ing pace.
The engine being stopped is signalled by a symbol fig. 103
on the display, depending on the trim level.
Engine restarting mode
WITH NORMAL TRANSMISSION
Depress the clutch pedal to restart the engine.
WITH ROBOTIZED GEARBOX
If the gear lever is in position N, place it in any other gear,
otherwise release the brake pedal or move the gear le-
ver to (
+), (–) or R.
F0V0039mfig. 104
MANUAL ACTIVATION AND
DEACTIVATION
The device can be activated/deactivated via button A-fig.
104 located to the side of the handbrake. When the func-
tion is not active, the button LED is on.
In addition, on some versions, additional information con-
cerning the deactivation or activation of the Start&Stop
system is given through a message in the display.
FAILED ENGINE CUT-OUT CONDITIONS
With the device activated, for reasons of comfort, limiting
emissions and safety, the engine does not stop in certain
conditions, including:
❒engine still cold;
❒particularly cold outside temperatures, where the ap-
propriate indication is provided;
❒battery not sufficiently charged;

EMERGENCY STARTING fig. 107
When jump starting, never connect the negative lead (–)
of the auxiliary battery to the negative pole C of the ve-
hicle battery, but rather to either the false pole B or to
an engine/gearbox earth point.
WARNINGS
When replacing the battery, always go to
the Fiat Service Network. Replace the bat-
tery using a new one of the same type and spec-
ifications.
WARNINGBefore opening the bonnet, make sure
that the vehicle is switched off and the key
is in the OFF position. Follow the instructions on
the dedicated plate on the front crossmember. It
is advisable to extract the key when there are oth-
er people in the vehicle.
WARNING

Versioni prive di falso polo fig. 106a
In case of car inactivity, special attention must be paid due
to the disconnection of the battery power supply. Proceed
as follows: detach the connector (by pressing button B) from
sensor C for monitoring the battery status installed on the
battery negative pole D. This sensor should never be dis-
connected from the pole except if the battery is replaced.

PARKING THE VEHICLE
Proceed as follows:
❒stop the engine and engage the handbrake;
❒engage a gear (first gear if parked uphill or reverse if fac-
ing downhill) and leave the wheels turned.
If the vehicle is parked on a steep slope, it is advisable to
block the wheels with a wedge or stone.
To prevent draining the battery, do not leave the ignition
key turned to MAR. Always remove the key when you
leave the vehicle.
Never leave children unattended in the vehicle. Always re-
move the ignition key when leaving the vehicle, and take
it with you.
USING THE GEARBOX
To engage the gears, depress the clutch pedal fully and shift
the gear lever A-fig. 127 into the required position (the di-
agram is shown on the gear knob fig. 127).
IMPORTANT Reverse may be engaged only when the ve-
hicle is at a standstill. With the engine running, wait for
at least 2 seconds with the clutch pedal fully depressed be-
fore engaging reverse to prevent damage to the gears and
grating.
To engage reverse R from neutral, lift ring B under the
knob and at the same time move the gearstick to the right
and then backwards (as shown in the diagram).

Depress the clutch pedal fully to change
gear correctly. Therefore, the floor area
under the pedals should be clear: ensure that any
rubber mats are flat and do not interfere with the
pedals.
WARNING
Do not drive with your hand resting on the
gear lever, because this pressure, even if
light, can wear out the inner components
of the gearbox over time. The clutch pedal should
be used only for gear changes. Do not drive with
your foot resting on the clutch pedal, however
slightly. For versions/markets where provided, the
electronic clutch control could cut in by interpret-
ing the incorrect driving style as a fault.
SAVING FUEL
Here are some useful tips to save fuel and minimise harm-
ful emissions of CO
2and other pollutants (nitric oxides,
unburnt hydrocarbons, fine dusts etc…).
PRACTICAL ADVICE FOR REDUCING FUEL
CONSUMPTION AND HARMFUL EMISSIONS
Vehicle conditions
1. Have checks and adjustments carried out in
accordance with the “Scheduled Servicing Plan”.
2. Check tyre pressures regularly, at least once every
four weeks. Excessively low pressures will increase
consumption because rolling resistance will be high-
er. In addition, this wears the tyre more quickly and
impairs performance.
3. Only use snow tyreswhen the weather conditions
make them absolutely necessary. They increase con-
sumption and noise.
4. Do not travel with a heavy load: the weight of the
vehicle (especially when driving in town) and its trim
greatly affect fuel consumption and stability.

When you press ASR OFF again, the button LED will turn
off and the display will show a specific message to inform
you that the system is on again.
GEAR SHIFT INDICATOR
(for versions/markets where provided)
On vehicles with a manual gearbox, the gear shift indica-
tor suggests gear changes to the driver (SHIFT UP or
SHIFT DOWN) via a special display on the control pan-
el. This suggestion to change gear is designed to improve
consumption and ensure the best driving style.
NBThe sign on the instrument panel remains on until the
driver changes gear or until the driving conditions return
to a situation where a gear change is not required to re-
duce consumption.

STARTING THE ENGINE
EMERGENCY STARTING
If the instrument panel warning light
Ystays on perma-
nently, contact a Fiat Dealership immediately.
JUMP STARTING
If the battery is flat, the engine may be started using an aux-
iliary battery with an equal or slightly higher capacity than
the flat one.
IN AN EMERGENCY
In an emergency, we recommend that you call the freephone number found in the Warranty Booklet. You can
also go to the www.fiat.com website to find your nearest Fiat Dealership.
To do so, proceed as follows (fig. 128):
❒connect the positive terminals (+ sign near the termi-
nal) of the two batteries with a jump lead;
❒with a second lead, connect the negative terminal (–) of
the auxiliary battery to an earthing point Eon the en-
gine or the gearbox of the car to be started;
❒start the engine.
❒when the engine has been started, follow the sequence
above in reverse order to remove the leads.
If after a few attempts the engine does not start, do not
keep trying but contact a Fiat Dealership.
IMPORTANT Do not directly connect the negative ter-
minals of the two batteries: sparks could ignite explosive
gas released from the battery. If the auxiliary battery is
installed on another vehicle, prevent accidental contact be-
tween metallic parts of the two vehicles.
