CONTAINING RUNNING COSTS
Here are some suggestions which may help you to
keep the running costs of your car down and lower
the amount of toxic emissions released into the
atmosphere.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
Car maintenance
Have checks and adjustments carried out in
accordance with the “Service schedule”.
Tyres
Check the pressure of the tyres routinely at an
interval of no more than 4 weeks: if the pressure is
too low, consumption levels increase as resistance to
rolling is higher.
Unnecessary loads
Do not travel with too much luggage stowed in the
boot. The weight of the car (especially when driving in
town) and its trim greatly affects consumption and
stability.Roof rack/ski rack
Remove the roof rack or the ski rack from the roof as
soon as they are no longer used. These accessories
lower air penetration and adversely affect
consumption levels. When needing to carry
particularly voluminous objects, preferably use a
trailer.
Electric devices
Use electric devices only for the amount of time
needed. Rear heated window, additional headlights,
windscreen wipers and heater fan need a considerable
amount of energy, therefore increasing the
requirement of current increases fuel consumption (up
to +25% in the urban cycle).
Climate control
The air conditioner is an additional load which greatly
affects the engine leading to higher consumption (on
average up to +20%). When the temperature outside
the vehicle permits it, use the air vents where possible.
Aerodynamic accessories
The use of non-certified aerodynamic items may
adversely affect air drag and consumption levels.

GENERAL INFORMATION
The fault messages appearing on the multifunction display when the respective panel warning light comes on are
accompanied by specific suggestions (example: “contact garage”, “turn off engine”, “check manual”, etc...). These
suggestions are short and cautionary. The purpose is to suggest the prompt action to be taken by the driver when a
fault occurs. Suggestions are neither comprehensive nor alternative to the specifications contained in this Owner
Handbook, which you should read very carefully. If a fault is reported, always refer to the instructions given in this
section. The following illustrations are only examples of what can be displayed:

Warning Messagelight on panel on display
ABS (WHEEL ANTI-LOCKING SYSTEM) FAILURE (red)
Turning the key to MAR the warning light on the dial turns on, but it should go off after about 4
seconds.
The warning light turns on together with the message when the system is inefficient. In this case
the braking system keeps its effectiveness unchanged, but without the potential offered by the
ABS system. Caution is advisable, particularly in all cases of less than perfect grip. It is therefore
necessary to contact Fiat Dealership.
ELECTRONIC BRAKEFORCE DISTRIBUTOR (EBD) FAILURE
The car is fitted with an electronic brakeforce distributor (EBD). Warning lights >and xand the
message at the same time, with the engine running, indicate a failure concerning the EBD system.
In this case violent braking may be accompanied by early rear wheel locking with the possibility of
skidding. Drive the car extremely carefully to the nearest Fiat Dealership to have the system checked.
ESP SYSTEM (ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM) (where provided) (amber)
Turning the ignition key to MAR, the warning light on the dial comes on but shall go off after few
seconds.
If the warning light does not go off or stays on when travelling, contact Fiat Dealership.
Warning light flashing when driving indicates that the ESP system is active.

WARNINGWarning light >turning on together with the message when the engine is running,
normally indicates a failure concerning the ABS only. In this case the braking
system is still efficient, though without the anti-locking device. Under these
conditions, performance of the EBD system may be reduced. Also in this case, you
are advised to go immediately to the nearest Fiat Dealership, driving in such a way
to avoid sharp braking to have the system checked.

ENGINE STARTING
EMERGENCY START-UP
If the Fiat Code system cannot deactivate the engine
immobiliser, the warning lights
¢and Uwill remain
lit and the engine will not start. To start your car
follow the emergency start-up procedure.
Read the whole procedure carefully before trying to
carry it out. If you make a mistake, you must turn the
ignition key back to STOP and repeat the whole
operation from beginning (step 1).
❒Read the 5-figure electronic code given on the
CODE card.
❒Turn the ignition key to MAR.
❒Press and hold down the accelerator pedal. The
warning light
Uturns on for about 8 seconds, and
then goes off; release the accelerator pedal and get
ready to count the flashes of the
Uwarning light.
❒Count the number of flashes that corresponds to
the first figure of the code on the CODE card, then
press the accelerator pedal and keep it there until
the
Uwarning light comes on (for 4 seconds) and
then goes off; release the accelerator pedal.❒The warning light
Uwill start flashing again: after it
has flashed the number of times that corresponds to
the second figure on the CODE card, press the
accelerator pedal to the floor and keep it there.
❒Do the same for the remaining figures on the
CODE card.
❒Once the final figure has been entered, keep the
accelerator pedal pressed. The warning light
Uwill
light up for 4 seconds and then go out; release the
accelerator pedal.
❒Rapid flashing of the warning light
U(for about 4
seconds) confirms the operation has been carried
out successfully.
❒Start the engine by turning the ignition key from
MAR to AVV.
If however the warning light
Ustays on, turn the
ignition key to STOP and repeat the procedure from
step 1.
IMPORTANT After an emergency start-up, you should
contact a Fiat Dealership otherwise you will have to
repeat the procedure described each time you want to
start the engine.

BUMP STARTING
Never bump start the engine by pushing, towing or
coasting downhill.
This could cause fuel to flow into the catalytic
converter and damage it beyond repair.
IMPORTANT Remember that the servobrake and
electrical power steering system are not operating
until the engine is started, a greater effort will
therefore be required to press the brake pedal or turn
the steering wheel.IF A TYRE IS PUNCTURED
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
For versions/markets where applicable, the car can be
fitted with a quick tyre repair kit called FIX & GO,
replacing the usual tool fitting, the spare wheel lifting
winch and the space-saver spare wheel.
Normal spare small wheel, or (where provided)
normal size spare wheel, can be supplied on request;
for its use, follow what indicated below.
VAN versions are fitted as standard with a spare
wheel with steel rim of the same type and size as the
standard wheels mounted on the car.
Wheel changing and correct use of the jack and space-
saver spare wheel call for some precautions as listed
below.
WARNINGAlert other drivers that the car is stationary in compliance with local regulations:
hazard warning lights, warning triangle, etc. Any passengers on board should leave the
car, especially if it is heavily laden. Passengers should stay away from oncoming traffic
while the wheel is being changed. If parked on a slope or rough surface, chock the
wheels with wedges or other suitable devices to prevent the car from rolling.

REFITTING THE STANDARD WHEEL
❒Following the procedure described previously, raise the car and
remove the space-saver spare wheel;
❒fit the standard wheel.
Make sure that the resting surface of the spare wheel is clean and there is
no dirt that could cause the bolts to loosen.
❒Tighten the bolts with the wrench supplied;
❒Lower the car and remove the jack;
❒Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown before;
❒Make sure the retaining ring (B) is inserted in the seats of the hub cap
so that the protruding section of the inflation valve is aligned with
symbol
Cmarked on the inside of the hub cap;
❒Press-fit the wheel cap on the rim, making sure symbol
Con the inside
of the cap, corresponds with the inflation valve.
Incorrect fitting may cause the wheel cap to come off when the car is
travelling.

Dealership;
❒if the proper tyre pressure has been reached (see
paragraph “Inflation pressure” in section “Technical
Specifications”, start driving immediately;❒after driving for about 10 minutes stop and check
again the tyre pressure; pull up the handbrake;
WARNING
WARNING
WARNING
Apply the sticker in a visible position
for the driver to indicate that the tyre
has been treated with the quick tyre
repair kit. Drive carefully especially
when cornering. Do not exceed 80
km/h. Avoid heavy braking and
accelerating.
It is of vital importance to
communicate that the tyre has been
repaired using the quick tyre repair kit.
Hand the instruction brochure to the
personnel charged with treating the
tyre repaired with the kit. If the pressure falls below 1.8 bars, do
not drive any further: the quick tyre
repair kit Fix & Go automatic cannot
guarantee proper hold
because the tyre
is too much damaged.
Contact Fiat
Dealership.
❒if pressure read is at least 1.8 bar, restore proper
pressure (with engine running and handbrake on)
and restart;
❒drive with the utmost care to the nearest Fiat

Where possible, have the lamps changed by Fiat Dealership. Correct operation and aiming of external
lights are essential for safe driving in compliance with law regulations.Halogen bulbs must be handled touching only the metallic part. If the transparent bulb is touched
with the fingers, its lighting intensity is reduced and life of the bulb may be compromised. If touched
accidentally, rub the bulb with a cloth moistened with alcohol and allow to dry.
IF A BULB BURNS OUT
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
❒Before changing a bulb check the contacts for
oxidation.
❒Burnt bulbs must be replaced by others of the same
type and power.❒Always check headlight aiming after changing a bulb
to ensure they are safe.
❒When a light is not working, check that the
corresponding fuse is intact before changing a bulb.
For the location of fuses, refer to the paragraph “If a
fuse blows” in this section.
Alterations or repairs to the electric system not carried out correctly and without
taking into account the system specifications may cause failures and the risk of
fire.WARNING
WARNINGHalogen bulbs contain pressurised gas, in the case of breakage they may burst.

Certain fuses are protected by a plastic grid.
To replace these fuses, first of all remove the grid
using a screwdriver. Replace the blown fuse and refit
the plastic grid.
To locate the fuse, refer to the tables on the following
pages.
FUSE BOX
The fuse box is located under the oddments tray on
the driver’s side.
The fuse location (n. 16 to n. 28) is not binding; to
replace a blown fuse, refer to the fuse colour that
must be the same as the fuse box colour.
To reach the fuses:
❒Raise the oddments tray compartment flap.
F0E0694m
The numbers indicating the electrical components
corresponding to each fuse can be seen on the inside
of the flap inner wall.
❒Take out the inner cover, rotating the two knobs
(A).
The group of fuses marked with letter (B) contains
spare filaments.
To facilitate fuse replacement, use the pliers (C)
located near the fuse box.
After use return pliers to their place.
IMPORTANT Never turn the ignition key to MAR
with a fuse removed; doing so would turn on warning
light
¬and the “fault” would be stored by the airbag
control unit. In such an event, go to Fiat Dealership to
reset the fault stored on the airbag control unit.
