Introduction

Recommendations for Safety Restraints for Children
Recommended restrainttypeChild size, height, weight, or ageChild
Use a child safety seat(sometimes called aninfant carrier, convertibleseat, or toddler seat).
Children weighing 40 lb (18 kg) or less(generally age four or younger).Infants ortoddlers
Use a belt-positioningbooster seat.
Children who have outgrown or no longerproperly fit in a child safety seat (gener-ally children who are less than 4 ft. 9 in.(1.45 m) tall, are greater than age fourand less than age 12, and between 40 lb(18 kg) and 80 lb (36 kg) and upward to100 lb (45 kg) if recommended by yourchild restraint manufacturer).
Small children
Use a vehicle seatbelthaving the lap belt snugand low across the hips,shoulder belt centeredacross the shoulder andchest, and seatbackupright.
Children who have outgrown or no longerproperly fit in a belt-positioning boosterseat (generally children who are at least4 ft. 9 in. (1.45 m) tall or greater than80 lb (36 kg) or 100 lb (45 kg) if recom-mended by child restraint manufacturer).
Larger children
•You are required by law to properly usesafety seats for infants and toddlers inthe United States and Canada.
•Many states and provinces require thatsmall children use approved boosterseats until they reach age eight, aheight of 4 feet 9 inches (1.45 meters)tall, or 80 lb (36 kg). Check your localand state or provincial laws for specificrequirements about the safety ofchildren in your vehicle.
•When possible, always properlyrestrain children 12 years of age andunder in a rear seating position of yourvehicle. Accident statistics suggest thatchildren are safer when properlyrestrained in the rear seating positionsthan in a front seating position.

necessary to remove the remainingslack that will exist once the extraweight of the child is added to the childrestraint. It also helps to achieve theproper snugness of the child seat toyour vehicle. Sometimes, a slight leantoward the buckle will help to removeremaining slack from the belt.
9.Attach the tether strap (if the child seatis equipped).
10. Before placing the child in the seat,forcibly move the seat forward andback to make sure the seat is securelyheld in place.
To check this, grab the seat at the belt pathand attempt to move it side to side andforward and back. There should be nomore than 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) ofmovement for proper installation.
We recommend checking with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger SafetyTechnician to make certain the childrestraint is properly installed. In Canada,check with Transport Canada for referralto a Child Car Seat Clinic.
Using Tether Straps
Many forward-facing child safety seatsinclude a tether strap which extends fromthe back of the child safety seat and hooksto an anchoring point called the top tetheranchor. Tether straps are available as anaccessory for many older safety seats.Contact the manufacturer of your childseat for information about ordering atether strap, or to obtain a longer tetherstrap if the tether strap on your safety seatdoes not reach the appropriate top tetheranchor in the vehicle.
Attach the tether strap only to the tetheranchor as shown. The tether strap may notwork properly if attached somewhere otherthan the correct tether anchor.
Note:Do not tighten the tether strapenough to lift the child seat off the vehicleseat cushion when the child is seated in it.Keep the tether strap just snug withoutlifting the front of the child seat. Keepingthe child seat just touching the vehicle seatgives the best protection in a severe crash.
Perform the following steps to install achild safety seat with tether anchors:
You can attach the tether directly to therear of the front seat.

2.Route the child safety seat tether strapover the back of the front passengerseat as shown.
3. Clip the tether strap hook to the seatpedestal at the location shown. If thetether strap is clipped incorrectly, thechild safety seat may not be retainedproperly in the event of a crash.
4. Adjust the front passenger seat to thefull rearward position.
5. Tighten the child safety seat tetherstrap according to the manufacturer’sinstructions.
If the safety seat is not anchored properly,the risk of a child being injured in a crashgreatly increases.
BOOSTER SEATS
WARNING
Do not put the shoulder section ofthe seatbelt or allow the child to putthe shoulder section of the seatbeltunder their arm or behind their back. Failureto follow this instruction could reduce theeffectiveness of the seatbelt and increasethe risk of injury or death in a crash.
Use a belt-positioning booster seat forchildren who have outgrown or no longerproperly fit in a child safety restraint(generally children who are less than 57 in(1.45 m) tall, are greater than age 4 andless than age 12, and between 40 lb (18 kg)and 80 lb (36 kg) and upward to 100 lb(45 kg) if recommended by your childrestraint manufacturer). Many state andprovincial laws require that children useapproved booster seats until they reachage eight, a height of 57 in (1.45 m) tall, or80 lb (36 kg).
Booster seats should be used until you cananswer YES to ALL of these questionswhen seated without a booster seat:
•Can the child sit all the way backagainst their vehicle seat backrest withknees bent comfortably at the edge ofthe seat cushion?
•Can the child sit without slouching?

•Does the lap belt rest low across thehips?
•Is the shoulder belt centered on theshoulder and chest?
•Can the child stay seated like this forthe whole trip?
Always use booster seats in conjunctionwith your vehicle lap and shoulder belt.
Types of Booster Seats
•Backless booster seats
If your backless booster seat has aremovable shield, remove the shield. If avehicle seating position has a low seatbackrest or no head restraint, a backlessbooster seat may place your child's head(as measured at the tops of the ears)above the top of the seat. In this case,move the backless booster to anotherseating position with a higher seat backrestor head restraint and lap and shoulderbelts, or consider using a high back boosterseat.
•High back booster seats
If, with a backless booster seat, you cannotfind a seating position that adequatelysupports your child's head, a high backbooster seat would be a better choice.
Children and booster seats vary in size andshape. Choose a booster that keeps thelap belt low and snug across the hips,never up across the stomach, and lets youadjust the shoulder belt to cross the chestand rest snugly near the center of theshoulder. The following drawings comparethe ideal fit (center) to a shoulder beltuncomfortably close to the neck and ashoulder belt that could slip off theshoulder. The drawings also show how thelap belt should be low and snug across thechild's hips.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNINGS
Always drive and ride with the seatbackrest upright and the lap beltsnug and low across the hips.
To reduce the risk of injury, makesure children sit where they can beproperly restrained.
Never let a passenger hold a child onhis or her lap while your vehicle ismoving. The passenger cannotprotect the child from injury in a crashwhich may result in serious injury or death.
All occupants of the vehicle,including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their safety belts, evenwhen an airbag supplemental restraintsystem is provided. Failure to properly wearyour safety belt could seriously increasethe risk of injury or death.
It is extremely dangerous to ride in acargo area, inside or outside of avehicle. In a crash, people riding inthese areas are more likely to be seriouslyinjured or killed. Do not allow people to ridein any area of your vehicle that is notequipped with seats and safety belts. Besure everyone in your vehicle is in a seatand using a safety belt properly.
In a rollover crash, an unbeltedperson is significantly more likely todie than a person wearing a safetybelt.
Each seating position in your vehiclehas a specific safety belt assemblywhich is made up of one buckle andone tongue that are designed to be usedas a pair. 1) Use the shoulder belt on theoutside shoulder only. Never wear theshoulder belt under the arm. 2) Neverswing the safety belt around your neck overthe inside shoulder. 3) Never use a singlebelt for more than one person.
WARNINGS
When possible, all children 12 yearsold and under should be properlyrestrained in a rear seating position.Failure to follow this could seriouslyincrease the risk of injury or death.
Safety belts and seats can becomehot in a vehicle that has been closedup in sunny weather; they could burna small child. Check seat covers andbuckles before you place a child anywherenear them.
Front and rear seat occupants,including pregnant women, shouldwear safety belts for optimumprotection in an accident.
All seating positions in this vehicle havelap and shoulder safety belts. Alloccupants of the vehicle should alwaysproperly wear their safety belts, even whenan airbag supplemental restraint systemis provided.
The safety belt system consists of:
•Lap and shoulder safety belts.
•Shoulder safety belt with automaticlocking mode, (except driver safetybelt).
•Height adjuster at the front outboardseating positions.
•Safety belt pretensioner at the frontoutboard seating positions.
•Safety belt warning light and chime.
•Crash sensors and monitoring systemwith readiness indicator.

DRIVER AND PASSENGER
AIRBAGS (If Equipped)
WARNINGS
Never place your arm over the airbagmodule as a deploying airbag canresult in serious arm fractures orother injuries.
Airbags can kill or injure a child in achild restraint. Never place arear-facing child restraint in front ofan active airbag. If you must use aforward-facing child restraint in the frontseat, move the seat upon which the childseat is installed all the way back.
The driver and front passenger airbags willdeploy during significant frontal and nearfrontal crashes.
The driver and passenger front airbagsystem consists of:
•Driver and passenger airbag modules.
· Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with readiness indicator.See Crash Sensors and AirbagIndicator (page 36).
Passenger Airbag On and OffSwitch (If Equipped)
WARNING
Your vehicle may have an airbagdeactivation switch. Before driving,always look at the switch to makesure it is in the appropriate position. Failureto put the switch in the proper position canincrease the risk of serious injury or deathin a crash.
Note:The passenger airbag on and offswitch may be on vehicles with no rearseats.
Turning the Passenger Airbag Off
WARNINGS
If the light does not illuminate whenthe passenger airbag switch is offand you switch the ignition on, havethe passenger airbag switch servicedimmediately by a qualified technician.
To avoid switching on the airbag,always remove the ignition key withthe switch in the off position.
NEVER use a rearward facing childrestraint on a seat protected by anACTIVE AIRBAG in front of it, DEATHor SERIOUS INJURY to the CHILD canoccur.

Type 1
Type 2
1. Insert the ignition key into thepassenger airbag on and off switch,turn the switch to off and hold it in offwhile removing the key.
2.When the ignition is turned on and thepassenger airbag switch is in the offposition, the off light illuminates briefly,momentarily shuts off and then turnsback on. This indicates that thepassenger airbag is deactivated.
Turning the Passenger Airbag Back On
WARNINGS
The seatbelts for the driver and rightfront passenger seating positions arespecifically designed to operatetogether with the airbags in certain typesof crashes. When you switch off yourairbag, you not only lose the protection ofthe airbag, you also may reduce theeffectiveness of your seatbelt system. Ifthe passenger does not meet therequirements stated in the NationalHighway Traffic Safety Administration orTransport Canada deactivation criteria,switching off the airbag can increase therisk of serious injury or death in a crash.
If your vehicle has rear seats, alwaystransport children who are 12 andyounger in the rear seat. Always useseatbelts and child restraints properly. Donot place a child in a rear facing infant seatin the front seat unless your vehicle isequipped with an airbag on and off switchand the passenger airbag is turned off. Thisis because the back of the infant seat istoo close to the inflating airbag and therisk of a fatal injury to the infant when theairbag inflates is substantial.
If the passenger airbag off light isilluminated when the passengerairbag switch is on and the ignitionis on, have the passenger airbag switchserviced immediately by a qualifiedtechnician.
The passenger airbag remains off until youturn it back on.
