ELECTRIC POWER STEERING
HOW DOES ELECTRIC POWERSTEERING WORK
Adaptive Learning
Adaptive learning helps correct roadirregularities and improves overall handlingand steering. It communicates with thebrake system to help operate advancedstability control and crash avoidancesystems.
Note:When the battery is disconnected ora new battery is installed, you must driveyour vehicle a short distance before thesystem relearns the strategy and reactivatesall systems.
Steering Tips
If the steering wanders or pulls, check for:
•An improperly inflated tire.
•Uneven tire wear.
•Loose or worn suspensioncomponents.
•Improper vehicle alignment.
Note:A high crown in the road or highcrosswinds could also make the steeringwander or pull.
ELECTRIC POWER STEERINGPRECAUTIONS
WARNING: The electric powersteering system has diagnostic checksthat continuously monitor the system. Ifa fault is detected, a message displaysin the information display. Stop yourvehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.Switch the vehicle off. After at least 10
seconds, switch the vehicle on andwatch the information display for asteering system warning message. If asteering system warning messagereturns, have the system checked assoon as possible.
WARNING: If the system detectsan error, you may not feel a difference inthe steering, however a serious conditionmay exist. Have your vehicle checked assoon as possible. Failure to do so mayresult in loss of steering control.
Adapt your speed and driving behavioraccording to reduced steering assist.
Extreme continuous steering may increasethe effort to steer. This occurs to preventinternal overheating and damage to thesteering system. If this occurs, you will notlose the ability to steer your vehiclemanually nor will it cause damage to thesystem. Normal steering and driving allowsthe system to cool down and steeringassist returns to normal.
Note:There is no fluid reservoir to check orfill.
ELECTRIC POWER STEERINGADAPTIVE STEERING - VEHICLESWITH: ACTIVE STEERING
Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS)
The adaptive steering system changes thesteering ratio with changes to vehiclespeed, optimizing the steering response inall conditions. The system also changeswhen you switch on the transmissiontow/haul feature. When you select thetow/haul button, the adaptive steeringsystem reduces vehicle sensitivity tosteering inputs at higher vehicle speeds, while maintaining the ease of parking andmaneuverability at low speeds.

Note:The adaptive steering systemcontinuously monitors for faults. If thesystem detects a fault, a message appearsin the information display. If a red warningmessage displays, stop your vehicle as soonas it is safe to do so. The message couldclear if the fault is no longer present. If anadaptive steering system warning messageappears each time you start your vehicle, have the system checked as soon aspossible.
Note:The system has a locking device. Itremains mechanically locked at a fixedsteering ratio with the lock engaged. Youmay notice a click when you turn yourvehicle on or off.
Note:If your vehicle loses electrical poweror detects a fault when you are driving, thesystem shuts down and you retain a normalsteering function with a fixed steering ratio.During this time, it is possible that thesteering wheel could not be straight whenthe vehicle is driving straight ahead. Inaddition, you could notice that the steeringwheel angle required to steer your vehiclecould be different.
Note:During parking maneuvers, theadaptive steering system balances the driverworkload for various steering wheel inputsand vehicle loading conditions. Underextreme operating conditions the systemlocking device could engage. This strategyprevents overheating and permanentdamage to the adaptive steering system.Typical steering and driving maneuversallow the system to cool and return tonormal operation.
Adaptive Learning

6.If the trailer wheels lock up, indicatedby squealing tires, reduce the gainsetting. If the trailer wheels turn freely, increase the gain setting. Repeat Steps5 and 6 until the gain setting is at apoint just below trailer wheel lock-up.If towing a heavier trailer, trailer wheellock-up may not be attainable evenwith the maximum gain setting of 10.
Note:Only perform this procedure atspeeds of approximately 20–25 mph(30–40 km/h).
Note:The trailer brake controller reducesoutput at vehicle speeds below 11 mph(18 km/h) so that trailer and vehicle brakingis not jerky or harsh. This feature is onlyavailable when applying the brakes usingyour vehicle's brake pedal, not thecontroller.
Note:Your vehicle's brake system and thetrailer brake system work independently ofeach other. Changing the gain setting on thecontroller does not affect the operation ofyour vehicle's brakes whether you attach atrailer or not.
Note:With the proper electrical connection, pressing your vehicle brake pedal or usingthe manual control lever illuminates bothtrailer and vehicle brake lamps.
Note:When you switch the engine off, thecontroller output is disabled and the displayand module shut down. The controllermodule and display turn on when you switchthe ignition on.

•The system could have difficultiesrecognizing the sticker based onenvironmental factors. You could needto move to a different area to changethe lighting and background or youcould need to change the direction youare driving. You could also try settingup the system at a different time ofday.
•Some trailers are not compatible withthe sticker and camera system. If theissue persists, set up the trailer with asensor purchased from your authorizeddealer. See Trailer SensorInstallation (page 441).
What does it mean if the systempauses during calibration?
•There could be steering input or trailermovement during the straight driveportion of the calibration process.
What does it mean if the systemdisplays hold steering steadyduring turn?
•Part of the calibration process for thesticker setup requires a steady turn. Ifyou are continually moving the steeringwheel during the turn, this delays thecalibration process. To enable thecalibration process, hold the steeringwheel at the same position whenturning.
What does it mean if the systemdisplays that it is not available?
•There could be a sub-system that thesystem uses that is not correctlyoperating. If the system continues todisplay it is not available, visit yourauthorized dealer to have your vehiclechecked.
•There could be a battery voltage issue.Make sure the battery is correctlycharged. If the system continues todisplay it is not available, visit yourauthorized dealer to have your vehiclechecked.
What does it mean if the systemdisplays that driving is required toinitialize steering?
•The steering system needs to learninternal parameters to fully turn on thefeature. Drive your vehicle straightforward above 25 mph (40 km/h) forapproximately 5 minutes.
•Your vehicle is new, there is a batteryvoltage issue or you have serviced thesteering system.
What does it mean if the systemrequires you to pull forward toinitialize?
•This occurs when the vehicle has notmoved during the current key cycleafter you connect and select the trailerin the touchscreen, or you operate thesystem at speeds below 1 mph(1 km/h) for an extended period oftime. Drive forward above 2 mph(3 km/h) and the system indicateswhen it initializes.
