CHECKING THE COOLANT
WARNING: Do not remove thecoolant reservoir cap when the vehicleis on or the cooling system is hot. Wait10 minutes for the cooling system to cooldown. Cover the coolant reservoir capwith a thick cloth to prevent thepossibility of scalding and slowly removethe cap. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury.
WARNING: Do not put coolant inthe windshield washer reservoir. Ifsprayed on the windshield, coolant couldmake it difficult to see through thewindshield.
WARNING: Do not add coolantfurther than the MAX mark.
Note: Coolant expands when it is hot. Thelevel may extend beyond the MAX mark.
Your vehicle has a battery cooling systemand a motor electrical cooling system. SeeUnder Hood Overview (page 325). Theluggage compartment covers need to beremoved in order to access the reservoirs.See Installing and Removing theLuggage Compartment Cover (page 297).
When the electric motor is cold, check theconcentration and level of the coolant atthe intervals listed in the scheduledmaintenance information. See ScheduledMaintenance (page 410).
Maintain coolant concentration within48% to 50%, which equates to a freezepoint between -29–-35°F (-34–-37°C).Check coolant concentration using arefractometer. We do not recommend theuse of hydrometers or coolant test stripsfor measuring coolant concentration.
Adding Coolant
It is very important to use predilutedcoolant approved to the correctspecification in order to avoid plugging thesmall passageways in the electric motorcooling system. See Cooling SystemCapacity and Specification (page 366).
Do not mix different colors or types ofcoolant in your vehicle. Mixing of coolantsor using an incorrect coolant may harm theelectric motor or cooling systemcomponents and may cause damage thatthe vehicle warranty may not cover.
Note:Automotive fluids are notinterchangeable.
Note:Do not use stop leak pellets, coolingsystem sealants, or non-specified additivesas they can cause damage to the electricmotor cooling or heating systems.

Severe Climates
If you drive in extremely cold climates:

•A coolant concentration of 60%provides improved freeze pointprotection.
•Coolant concentrations above 60%decrease the overheat protectioncharacteristics of the coolant and maycause damage to the electric motor.
If you drive in extremely hot climates:
•You can decrease the coolantconcentration to 40%.
•A coolant concentration of 40%provides improved overheat protection.
•Coolant concentrations below 40%decrease the overheat and corrosionprotection characteristics of thecoolant and may cause damage to theelectric motor.
Coolant Change
Change the coolant at specific mileageintervals listed in the scheduledmaintenance information. Add predilutedcoolant approved to the correctspecification. See Cooling SystemCapacity and Specification (page 366).
