3.While holding the shoulder and lap beltportions together, route the tonguethrough the child seat according to thechild seat manufacturer's instructions.Be sure the belt webbing is not twisted.
4.Insert the belt tongue into the properbuckle (the buckle closest to thedirection the tongue is coming from)for that seating position until you heara snap and feel the latch engage. Makesure the tongue is latched securely bypulling on it.
5.To put the retractor in the automaticlocking mode, grasp the shoulderportion of the belt and pull downwarduntil all of the belt is pulled out.
6.Allow the belt to retract to removeslack. The belt will click as it retractsto indicate it is in the automatic lockingmode.
7.Try to pull the belt out of the retractorto make sure the retractor is in theautomatic locking mode (you shouldnot be able to pull more belt out). If theretractor is not locked, unbuckle thebelt and repeat Steps 5 and 6.
8.Remove remaining slack from the belt.Force the seat down with extra weight,for example, by pressing down orkneeling on the child restraint whilepulling up on the shoulder belt in orderto force slack from the belt. This isnecessary to remove the remainingslack that will exist once the extra

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNINGS
Always drive and ride with your seatback upright and the lap belt snugand low across the hips.
To reduce the risk of injury, makesure children sit where they can beproperly restrained.
Never let a passenger hold a child onhis or her lap while the vehicle ismoving. The passenger cannotprotect the child from injury in a crashwhich may result in serious injury or death.
All occupants of the vehicle,including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their safety belts, evenwhen an airbag supplemental restraintsystem is provided. Failure to properly wearyour safety belt could seriously increasethe risk of injury or death.
It is extremely dangerous to ride in acargo area, inside or outside of avehicle. In a crash, people riding inthese areas are more likely to be seriouslyinjured or killed. Do not allow people to ridein any area of your vehicle that is notequipped with seats and safety belts. Besure everyone in your vehicle is in a seatand using a safety belt properly.
In a rollover crash, an unbeltedperson is significantly more likely todie than a person wearing a safetybelt.
Each seating position in your vehiclehas a specific safety belt assemblywhich is made up of one buckle andone tongue that are designed to be usedas a pair. 1) Use the shoulder belt on theoutside shoulder only. Never wear theshoulder belt under the arm. 2) Neverswing the safety belt around your neck overthe inside shoulder. 3) Never use a singlebelt for more than one person.
WARNINGS
When possible, all children 12 yearsold and under should be properlyrestrained in a rear seating position.Failure to follow this could seriouslyincrease the risk of injury or death.
Safety belts and seats can becomehot in a vehicle that has been closedup in sunny weather; they could burna small child. Check seat covers andbuckles before you place a child anywherenear them.
Front and rear seat occupants,including pregnant women, shouldwear safety belts for optimumprotection in an accident.
All seating positions in this vehicle havelap and shoulder safety belts. Alloccupants of the vehicle should alwaysproperly wear their safety belts, even whenan airbag supplemental restraint systemis provided.
The safety belt system consists of:
•Lap and shoulder safety belts.
•Shoulder safety belt with automaticlocking mode, (except driver safetybelt).
•Height adjuster at the front outboardseating positions.
•Safety belt pretensioner at the frontoutboard seating positions.
•Safety belt warning light and chime.
•Crash sensors and monitoring systemwith readiness indicator.

All safety restraints in the vehicle arecombination lap and shoulder belts. Thedriver safety belt has the first type oflocking mode. The front outboardpassenger and rear outboard seat safetybelts have both types of locking modesdescribed as follows:
Vehicle Sensitive Mode
This is the normal retractor mode, whichallows free shoulder belt lengthadjustment to your movements andlocking in response to vehicle movement.For example, if the driver brakes suddenlyor turns a corner sharply, or the vehiclereceives an impact of about 5 mph(8 km/h) or more, the combination safetybelts will lock to help reduce forwardmovement of the driver and passengers.
In addition, the retractor is designed to lockif the webbing is pulled out too quickly. Ifthis occurs, let the belt retract slightly andpull webbing out again in a slow andcontrolled manner.
Automatic Locking Mode
In this mode, the shoulder belt isautomatically pre-locked. The belt will stillretract to remove any slack in the shoulderbelt. The automatic locking mode is notavailable on the driver safety belt.
When to Use the Automatic LockingMode
Use this mode any time a child safety seat,except a booster, is installed in passengerfront or rear seating positions. You shouldproperly restrain children 12 years old andunder in a rear seating position wheneverpossible. See Child Safety (page 15).
How to Use the Automatic LockingMode
1.Buckle the combination lap andshoulder belt.
2.Grasp the shoulder portion and pulldownward until the entire belt is pulledout.
3.Allow the belt to retract. As the beltretracts, you will hear a clicking sound.This indicates the safety belt is now inthe automatic locking mode.
How to Disengage the AutomaticLocking Mode
Unbuckle the combination lap andshoulder belt and allow it to retractcompletely to disengage the automaticlocking mode and activate the vehiclesensitive (emergency) locking mode.
Safety Belt Extension Assembly
WARNING
Do not use extensions to change thefit of the shoulder belt across thetorso.
If the safety belt is too short when fullyextended, you can obtain a safety beltextension assembly from an authorizeddealer.

LIGHTING CONTROL
•Rotate the headlamp control clockwiseto the first position to turn on theparking lamps, instrument panel lamps,license plate lamps and tail lamps.
•Rotate clockwise to the secondposition to also turn on the headlamps.
High Beams
Push the lever toward the instrument panelto switch the high beams on.
Push the lever toward the instrument panelagain or pull the lever towards you toswitch the high beams off.
Headlamp Flasher
Pull the lever toward you to flash theheadlamps and release the lever to switchthe headlamps off.
AUTOLAMPS (IF EQUIPPED)
The autolamp system provides lightsensitive automatic on-off control of theexterior lights normally controlled by theheadlamp control.
•To turn autolamps on, rotate thecontrol to the fourth position.
•To turn autolamps off, rotate thecontrol to the first, second, or thirdposition.

To remove a filter:
1.Turn the vehicle off.
2.Push up on the outside rigid edge ofthe filter until the tabs are released,then remove the filter.
To install a filter:
1.First, position the filter in its housingmaking sure that the far forward endis all the way up in the housing.
2.Push in on the center of the outsideedge of the filter and rotate clockwiseinto the housing until it clips intoposition.
FRONT SEAT ARMREST
Press the button on the right-hand side ofthe seat and pull the seatback down torelease the armrest. You can also gainaccess to the cupholders and seatbackstorage bin.
Pull up on the tab to open the storage bin
Lift up on the seatback to return it to theupright position.
If your vehicle has an under-seat storagecompartment in the seat cushion, lift thelatch to open the lid of the compartment.You cannot open the lid when the armrestis down.

We recommend regular unleaded gasolinewith a pump (R+M)/2 octane rating of 87.Some stations offer fuels posted as regularwith an octane rating below 87, particularlyin high altitude areas. We do notrecommend fuels with an octane ratingbelow 87.
Do not be concerned if your enginesometimes knocks lightly. However, if itknocks heavily under most drivingconditions while you are using fuel with therecommended octane rating, see yourauthorized dealer to prevent any enginedamage.
RUNNING OUT OF FUEL
Avoid running out of fuel because thissituation may have an adverse effect onpowertrain components.
If you have run out of fuel:
•You may need to cycle the ignition fromoff to on several times after refuelingto allow the fuel system to pump thefuel from the tank to the engine. Onrestarting, cranking time will take a fewseconds longer than normal. Withkeyless ignition, just start the engine.Crank time will be longer than usual.
•Normally, adding 1 gallon (3.8 liters) offuel is enough to restart the engine. Ifthe vehicle is out of fuel and on a steepgrade, more than 1 gallon (3.8 liters)may be required.
•The service engine soon indicator maycome on. For more information on theservice engine soon indicator, SeeWarning Lamps and Indicators(page 77).
Refilling With a Portable FuelContainer
WARNINGS
The fuel system may be underpressure. If the fuel filler cap isventing vapor or if you hear a hissingsound, wait until it stops before completelyremoving the fuel filler cap. Otherwise, fuelmay spray out and cause personal injury.
Do not try to pry open or push openthe fuel system with foreign objects.This could damage the fuel systemand its seal and cause personal injury toyou or others.
Use the following directions when fillingfrom a portable fuel container:
1.Remove the fuel cap from the fuel fillerpipe by rotating it counter clockwise.
2.Slowly insert the portable fuelcontainer into the fuel filler opening.
3.Fill the vehicle with fuel from theportable fuel container.
4.4. When done, remove the portablefuel container nozzle and reinstall fuelcap. Insert fuel cap into fuel filleropening and turn clockwise until a clickis heard.
REFUELING
WARNINGS
Fuel vapor burns violently and a fuelfire can cause severe injuries.
Read and follow all the instructionson the pump island.
Turn off your engine when you arerefueling.
Do not smoke if you are near fuel orrefueling your vehicle.

WARNINGS
Keep sparks, flames and smokingmaterials away from fuel.
Stay outside your vehicle and do notleave the fuel pump unattendedwhen refueling your vehicle. This isagainst the law in some places.
Keep children away from the fuelpump; never let children pump fuel.
Do not use personal electronicdevices while refueling.
Use the following guidelines to avoidelectrostatic charge build-up when fillingan ungrounded fuel container:
•Place approved fuel container on theground.
•Do not fill a fuel container while it is inthe vehicle (including the cargo area).
•Keep the fuel pump nozzle in contactwith the fuel container while filling.
•Do not use a device that would holdthe fuel pump handle in the fill position.
Fuel Filler Cap
WARNINGS
The fuel system may be underpressure. If you hear a hissing soundnear the fuel filler door, do not refueluntil the sound stops. Otherwise, fuel mayspray out, which could cause seriouspersonal injury.
If you do not use the proper fuel fillercap, excessive pressure or vacuumin the fuel tank may damage the fuelsystem or cause the fuel cap to disengagein a collision, which may result in possiblepersonal injury.
Note:If you must replace the fuel filler cap,replace it with a fuel filler cap that isdesigned for your vehicle. The customerwarranty may be void for any damage to thefuel tank or fuel system if the correctgenuine Ford, Motorcraft® or other certifiedfuel filler cap is not used.
Your fuel tank filler cap has an indexeddesign with a 1/4th turn on and off feature.When fueling your vehicle:
1.Put the vehicle in P (Park).
2.Turn the engine off.
3.Carefully turn the filler capcounterclockwise until it spins off.
4.Pull to remove the cap from the fuelfiller pipe.
5.To install the cap, align the tabs on thecap with the notches on the filler pipe.
6.Turn the filler cap clockwise 1/4 of aturn clockwise until it clicks at leastonce.
If the Check Fuel Cap light or a Check FuelCap message appears in the instrumentcluster and stays on after you start theengine, the fuel filler cap may not beproperly installed.
If the fuel cap light remains on, at the nextopportunity, safely pull off of the road,remove the fuel filler cap, align the capproperly and reinstall it. The check fuel caplight or Check fuel cap message may notreset immediately; it may take severaldriving cycles for the indicators to turn off.A driving cycle consists of an enginestart-up (after four or more hours with theengine off) followed by normal city andhighway driving.

USING FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE
WARNING
For important information regardingsafe operation of this type of vehicle,See General Information (page263).
Note:Do not use 4X4 mode on dry, hardsurfaced roads. Doing so will produceexcessive noise, increase tire wear and maydamage drive components. 4X4 mode isonly intended for consistently slippery orloose surfaces.
Note:If 4X4 low is selected while thevehicle is moving above 3 mph (5 km/h),the 4WD system will not perform a shift.This is normal and should be no reason forconcern. Refer to Shifting to/from 4L (4X4Low) for proper operation.
Manual Shift On Stop (MSOS)4WD system (If Equipped)
Note:Some vehicles may be equipped withwheel ornaments that cover the 4x4 manualhub lock. These ornaments must beremoved to access the manual hub locks.
Note:The vehicle should not be driven in4X4 High or 4X4 Low modes with the hublocks set to FREE as this condition maydamage driveline system components.
The 4WD system is engaged or disengagedby rotating the control for both front wheelhub locks from the FREE or LOCK position,then manually engaging or disengaging thetransfer case with the floor-mountedshifter. For increased fuel economy in 2WD,rotate both hub locks to the FREE position.
Electronic Shift-On-the-Fly(ESOF) 4WD system
Note:If 4X4 Low is selected while thevehicle is moving above 3 mph (5 km/h),the 4WD system will not perform a shift.This is normal and should be no reason forconcern. Refer to Shifting to/from 4L (4X4Low) for proper system operation.
Note:Auto-manual hub locks can bemanually overridden by rotating the hub lockcontrol from AUTO to LOCK.
For proper operation, make sure that eachhub is fully engaged and that both hublocks are set to the same position (bothset to LOCK or both set to AUTO). Toengage LOCK, turn the hub lockscompletely clockwise; to engage AUTO,turn the hub locks completelycounterclockwise.
The ESOF 4WD system:

2.Open the latches to release the panels.
3.Rotate the panels toward the tailgate.Repeat Steps 1-3 on the other side ofyour vehicle.
4.Connect the two panels. Rotate bothknobs one-quarter turn clockwise tosecure the panels.
5.Make sure to insert the latch rod intothe tailgate hole. Make sure to engageboth sides of the locking pins into theirholes in the pick-up box.
Reverse the steps to store the bedextender.
Grocery Mode
Follow Steps 1-4 of the tailgate modeinstructions by rotating the panels awayfrom the tailgate. Close the tailgate.

Only use oils certified for gasoline enginesby the American Petroleum Institute (API).An oil with this trademark symbolconforms to the current engine andemission system protection standards andfuel economy requirements of theInternational Lubricants SpecificationAdvisory Council (ILSAC), comprised ofU.S. and Japanese automobilemanufacturers.
1.Check the engine oil level.
2.If the engine oil level is not within thenormal range, add engine oil thatmeets Ford specifications. SeeCapacities and Specifications for moreinformation.
3.Remove the engine oil filler cap anduse a funnel to pour the engine oil intothe opening.
4.Recheck the engine oil level. Make surethe oil level is not above the normaloperating range on the engine oil leveldipstick.
5.Install the engine oil level dipstick andensure it is fully seated.
6.Fully install the engine oil filler cap byturning the filler cap clockwise untilthree clicks are heard or until the capis fully seated.
ENGINE COOLANT CHECK
Checking the Engine Coolant
Note:If your vehicle is equipped with adiesel engine, refer to the DieselSupplement.
When the engine is cold, check theconcentration and level of the enginecoolant at the intervals listed in thescheduled maintenance information. SeeScheduled Maintenance (page 440).
Note:Make sure that the level is betweenthe MIN and MAX marks on the coolantreservoir.
Note:Coolant expands when it is hot. Thelevel may extend beyond the MAX mark
Note:If the level is at the MIN mark, belowthe MIN mark, or empty, add coolantimmediately. See Adding Engine Coolantin this chapter.
The coolant concentration should bemaintained within 48% to 50%, whichequates to a freeze point between -29°F(-34°C) and -35°F (-37°C).
Note:For best results, coolantconcentration should be tested with arefractometer such as Rotunda tool300-ROB75240 available from yourauthorized dealer. Ford does notrecommend the use of hydrometers orcoolant test strips for measuring coolantconcentrations.
Note:Automotive fluids are notinterchangeable. Do not use engine coolantor antifreeze or windshield washer fluidoutside of its specified function and vehiclelocation.
