FUEL GAUGE LIMITATIONS
The fuel gauge may not provide anaccurate reading when your vehicle is onan incline.
LOCATING THE FUEL FILLERDOOR
The arrow adjacent to the fuel pumpsymbol indicates on which side of yourvehicle the fuel filler door is located.
WHAT IS THE LOW FUELREMINDER
A low fuel level reminder displays andsounds when the distance to emptyreaches 50 mi (80 km),25 mi (40 km),12 mi (20 km) and 0 mi (0 km).
Note:The low fuel reminder can appear atdifferent fuel gauge positions depending onfuel economy conditions. This variation isnormal.
WHAT IS DISTANCE TO EMPTY
Indicates the approximate distance yourvehicle can travel on the fuel remaining inthe tank. Changes in driving pattern cancause the value to not only decrease butalso increase or stay constant for periodsof time.
Note:When you have a trailer connected,your distance to empty accounts for thetrailer.

TEMPERATURE GAUGE
Indicates the engine coolant temperature.
ENGINE OIL PRESSURE GAUGE
Indicates the engine oil pressure.
Note:This is a configurable gauge.

•Follow the recommended servicemaintenance intervals. See GeneralMaintenance Information (page 594).
•Do not store biodiesel fuel in the fueltank for more than 1 month.
•Consider changing brands or reducingbiodiesel content if you have coldtemperature fuel gelling issues or afrequently appearing LOW FUELPRESSURE message.
Use of biodiesel in concentrations greaterthan 20% can cause damage to yourvehicle, including engine and/or exhaustafter-treatment hardware (exhaustcatalyst and particulate filter) failures.Concentrations greater than 20% can alsocause fuel filter restrictions that couldresult in a lack of power or damage to fuelsystem components, including fuel pumpand fuel injector failures.
We recommend SAE 5W-40 oil for fuelswith greater than 5% biodiesel (B5). Formore information about oil changeintervals and other maintenance whenoperating on biodiesel. See SpecialOperating Conditions ScheduledMaintenance (page 603).
Look for a label on the fuel pump toconfirm the amount of biodiesel containedin diesel fuel. Ask the service stationattendant to confirm the biodiesel contentof diesel fuel, if you do not see a label onthe fuel pump.
If you plan to park or store your vehicle formore than 1 month, then you should emptyyour vehicle fuel tank of biodiesel fuel. Youshould fill the tank with a purepetroleum-based diesel fuel and run yourvehicle for a minimum of 30 minutes.
Note:Degraded or oxidized biodiesel candamage fuel system seals and plastics andcorrode steel parts.
During cold weather, if you have problemsoperating on biodiesel, you may need touse diesel fuel with lower biodieselcontent, try another brand or discontinuethe use of biodiesel.
Diesel Fuel Additives
It should not be necessary to add anyaftermarket additives to your fuel if youuse a high-quality diesel fuel that conformsto ASTM industry specifications.Aftermarket additives can damage the fuelinjector system or engine.
Use Motorcraft® cetane booster or anequivalent cetane booster additive if yoususpect fuel has low cetane. UseMotorcraft® anti-gel and performanceimprover or an equivalent additive if thereis fuel gelling.
Do not use alcohol-based additives toimprove cetane quality, to prevent fuelgelling or any other use. The use of alcoholadditives could result in damage to the fuelinjectors and system.
Your Warranty may not cover repairsneeded to correct the effects of using anaftermarket product that does not meetour specifications in your fuel.

WARNING: Flow of fuel through afuel pump nozzle can produce staticelectricity. This can cause a fire if you arefilling an ungrounded fuel container.

When operating your vehicle with asnowplow:
•Do not exceed 45 mph (72 km/h).
•Your engine could run at a highertemperature than normal.
•If you are driving more than 15 mi(24 km) at temperatures abovefreezing, angle the plow bladeeither full left or full right to providemaximum airflow to the radiator.
•If you are driving less than 15 mi(24 km) at speeds up to 45 mph(72 km/h) in cold weather, you donot need to worry about bladeposition to provide maximumairflow.
•Shift to 4L when plowing in small areasat speeds below 5 mph (8 km/h).
•Shift to 4H when plowing larger areasor light snow at higher speeds above5 mph (8 km/h). Do not exceed15 mph (24 km/h).
•Do not shift the transmission from aforward gear to reverse (R) until theengine is at idle and the wheels havestopped.
Note:Careless or high-speed driving whensnowplowing, which results in significantvehicle decelerations, can deploy the airbag.Such driving also increases the risk ofaccidents.
Note:Drive your vehicle at least 500 mi(800 km) before using your vehicle forsnowplowing.
Note:Follow the severe duty schedule forengine oil and transmission fluid changeintervals. See Special OperatingConditions Scheduled Maintenance (page608).

WARNING: Do not add engine oilwhen the engine is hot. Failure to followthis instruction could result in personalinjury.
Do not use supplemental engine oiladditives because they are unnecessaryand could lead to engine damage that thevehicle warranty may not cover.
1.Clean the area surrounding the engineoil filler cap before you remove it.
2.Remove the engine oil filler cap.
3.Add engine oil that meets ourspecifications. See Capacities andSpecifications (page 520).
4.Reinstall the engine oil filler cap. Turnit clockwise until you feel a strongresistance.
Note: Do not add oil further than themaximum mark. Oil levels above themaximum mark may cause engine damage.
Note:Immediately soak up any oil spillagewith an absorbent cloth.
INTELLIGENT OIL LIFE MONITOR
Under certain conditions the vehicle’sintelligent oil life monitor may determineyour oil requires replacement prior to yourgeneral service. Should this occur it isrecommended you replace your oil withintwo weeks or 500 mi (800 km) of beingalerted.
Your authorized dealer will be able toadvise you whether only an engine oil andfilter change is recommended or whetheryou should complete your general serviceinclusive of oil and oil Filter.
RESETTING THE INTELLIGENT OILLIFE MONITOR
1.Press the Menu button on the steeringwheel to enter the instrument clusterdisplay main menu.
2.Select Vehicle Maintenance.
3.Select Oil Life.
4.Select Reset Oil Life.
5.Press and hold the OK button until thesystem reset confirmation appears.

Whenthis displays, inspect the engine air filter and replace ifnecessary. If the air filter is not replaced, no reset is required,the minder will automatically reset once the obstruction iscleared after driving the vehicle for approximately an hour.If the air filter was replaced, you must reset the system inorder to change the status See Resetting the IntelligentOil Life Monitor (page 445).

When this displays, inspect the engine air filter and replaceif necessary. If the air filter is not replaced, no reset isrequired, the minder will automatically reset once theobstruction is cleared after driving the vehicle for approxim-ately an hour. If the air filter was replaced, you must resetthe system in order to change the status See Resettingthe Intelligent Oil Life Monitor (page 445).

DRAINING THE FUEL FILTER

WARNING: Do not drain thewater-in-fuel separator while the engineis running. Failure to follow this warningmay result in fire, serious injury, death orproperty damage.
WARNING: Do not dispose of fuelin the household refuse or the publicsewage system. Use an authorized wastedisposal facility.
Your vehicle has a diesel fuel conditionermodule. The module is mounted betweenthe outboard side of the fuel tank and theframe rail.
Note:The module is at the front of the fueltank or at the front of the aft-axle fuel tankon some models.

PREPARING YOUR VEHICLE
FOR STORAGE
If you plan on storing your vehicle for 30days or more, the following maintenancerecommendations ensures your vehiclestays in good operating condition.
Under various conditions, long-termstorage may lead to degraded engineperformance or failure unless you usespecific precautions to preserve yourvehicle.
General
•Store all vehicles in a dry, ventilatedplace.
•If vehicles are stored outside, theyrequire regular maintenance to protectagainst rust and weather damage.
•Make sure all linkages, cables, leversand pins under your vehicle are coveredwith grease to prevent rust.
•Move vehicles at least 25 ft (7.5 m)every 15 days to lubricate working partsand prevent corrosion.
•Fill the fuel tank with high-quality fueluntil the first automatic shutoff of thefuel pump nozzle.
Engine
•Change the engine oil and filter prior tostorage because used engine oilcontains contaminants which maycause engine damage.
•Start the engine every 15 days for aminimum of 15 minutes. Run at fastidle with the climate controls set todefrost until the engine reaches normaloperating temperature.
•With your foot on the brake, shiftthrough all the gears while the engineis running.
Body
•Wash your vehicle thoroughly toremove dirt, grease, oil, tar or mud fromexterior surfaces, rear wheel housingsand the underside of front fenders.
•Periodically wash your vehicle if it isstored in exposed locations.
•Touch-up exposed or primed metal toprevent rust.
•Cover chrome and stainless steel partswith a thick coat of auto wax to preventdiscoloration. Rewax as necessarywhen you wash your vehicle.
•Lubricate all hood, door and luggagecompartment hinges and latches witha light grade oil.
•Cover interior trim to prevent fading.
•Keep all rubber parts free from oil andsolvents.
12 Volt Battery
•When storing your vehicle for longerthan 30 days the state of chargeshould be approximately 50%.Additionally, we recommend todisconnect the 12v battery to reducesystem loads on the battery, or you canuse a trickle charger for longer storageperiods.
•Check and recharge as necessary. Keepconnections clean.
Note:It is necessary to reset memoryfeatures if you disconnect the batterycables.

Tires
•Maintain recommended air pressure.
•To minimize flat spots on the tires,inflate all four tires to therecommended cold pressures listed onthe Safety Compliance Certificationlabel or Tire Label affixed to yourvehicle. When the vehicle is taken outof storage, reset the tire pressures asnecessary to the recommended levelslisted on the Safety ComplianceCertification label or Tire Label affixedto your vehicle.
Note:If you store your vehicle in a locationwith low ambient temperatures, follow theinstructions for care of summer tires.
Brakes
Make sure the brakes and parking brakefully release.
Note:If you intend on parking your vehiclefor an extended period after cleaning thewheels with a wheel cleaner, drive yourvehicle for a few minutes before doing so toreduce the risk of increased corrosion of thebrake discs, brake pads and linings.
REMOVING YOUR VEHICLE
FROM STORAGE
When your vehicle is ready to come out ofstorage, do the following:
•We recommend that you change theengine oil before you use your vehicleagain.
•Wash your vehicle to remove any dirtor grease film build-up on windowsurfaces.
•Check windshield wipers for anydeterioration.
•Check the underhood for any foreignmaterials such as mice or squirrelnests.
•Check the exhaust for any foreignmaterials.
•Check tire pressures and set tireinflation per the Tire Label.
•Check brake pedal operation. Corrodedbrake rotors could cause brake noise.Drive your vehicle and gently apply andrelease the brakes repeatedly over a10-minute drive to reduce the corrosionfrom the brakes.
•Check fluid levels (including coolant,oil and gas) to make sure there are noleaks, and fluids are at recommendedlevels.
•If you remove the battery, clean thebattery cable ends and check fordamage.

Your vehicle comes with the IntelligentOil-Life Monitor system, a messageappears in the information display at theproper oil change interval. This intervalmay be up to one year or 15,000 mi(24,000 km) for the 6.7L Diesel.
When the oil change message appears inthe information display, it is time for an oilchange. Make sure you perform the oilchange within two weeks or 500 mi(800 km) of the message appearing. Makesure to reset the Intelligent Oil-Life Monitorafter each oil change. See NormalScheduled Maintenance (page 597).
If your information display resetsprematurely or becomes inoperative, youshould perform the oil change interval atsix months or 5,000 mi (8,000 km) fromyour last oil change. Never exceed one yearor 15,000 mi (24,000 km) between oilchange intervals.
You can drive high performance vehiclesin such a way that may lead to higher oilconsumption including extended time athigh engine speeds, high loads, enginebraking, hard cornering maneuvers, trackand off-road usage. Under theseconditions, oil consumption ofapproximately 1 quart per 500 miles (1 literper 800 km) is possible. Check the engineoil level at every refueling and adjust tomaintain proper levels to avoid enginedamage.
It is important to rely upon your dealershipto properly diagnose and repair yourvehicle.

Additives and Chemicals
We do not recommend using chemicals oradditives not approved by us as part ofyour vehicle’s normal maintenance. Pleaseconsult your warranty information.
Oils, Fluids and Flushing
In many cases, fluid discoloration is anormal operating characteristic and, byitself, does not necessarily indicate aconcern or that the fluid needs to bechanged. Have discolored fluids that alsoshow signs of overheating or foreignmaterial contamination checkedimmediately.
Make sure to change the vehicle’s oils andfluids at the specified intervals or inconjunction with a repair. Flushing is aviable way to change fluid for many vehiclesub-systems during scheduledmaintenance. It is critical that systems areflushed only with new fluid that is the sameas that required to fill and operate thesystem or using our approved flushingchemical.
Owner Checks and Services
Make sure you perform the following basicmaintenance checks and inspections.
Check Every Month
The air filter restriction gauge.1
The engine oil level.
Function of all interior and the exterior lights.
The tires including the spare for wear and proper pressure.
The windshield washer fluid level.
The fuel and water separator. Drain if necessary or if indicated by the information display.1
The holes and slots in the tail pipe to make sure they are functional and clear of debris.1

Check Every Six Months
The battery connections. Clean if necessary.
The body and door drain holes for obstructions. Clean if necessary.
The cooling system fluid level and the coolant system strength.
