Removal
Engine removal is not required for this procedure.
!@@ Make sure jacks and safety stands are placed
properly and hoist brackels are attached to correst posi-
tion on the engine,
CAUTION:
o Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted sur-
faces.
To avoid damage, unplug the wiling connectors
carelully while holding the connector portion.
To avoid damaging the cylinder head, wait until the
engine coolant temperature drops below 100"F {38'Cl
before loosening the retaining bolt.
NOTE:
. Unspecified items are common.
. Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection.
AIso, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or
hoses or interfere with other parts.
o Inspect the timing belt before removing the cylinder
n eao.
. Turn the crankshaft pulley so that the No. 1 piston is
at top dead center (see page 6-64).
1. Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
Drain the engine coolant {see page 10-7).
. Remove the radiator cap to speed draining.
Remove the strut brace (see page 5-2).
Remove the intake air duct and air cleaner housing
(see page 5-3).
Remove the adjusting bolt and mounting bolt, then
remove the power steering (P/S) pump belt and pump
(see page 5 5).

6. Loosen the idler pulley bracket bolt and adjusting
bolt, then remove the air conditioning (A/C) com-
pressor belt.

Oil Pressure
Use this procedure to tighten the filter if eight num-
bers (1 to 8) are printed on the surface of the filter.
1) Make a mark on the oil filter base under the num-
ber that shows at the bottom of the filter when
the rubber seal is seated.
2l Tighten the filter by turning it clockwise seven
numbers from the marked point. For example, if a
mark is made under the number 2 when the rub
ber seal is seated, the filter should be tightened
until the number 1 comes up to the marked point'

Testing
lf the oil pressure warning Iight stays on with the engine
running, check the engine oil level. It the oil level is cor-
rect:
1. Connect a tachometer'
2. Remove the engine oil pressure switch, and install an
oal pressure gauge.

Start the engine. Shut it off immediately if the gauge
registers no oil pr€ssure. Repair the problem before
continuing.
Allow the engine to reach operating temperature (tan

Inspection
1.Remove the oil jet (see page 8-3) and inspect it asfollows.
Make sure that a 1.1 mm (0.04 in) diameter drillwill go through the nozzte hole (j.2 mm (0.05 in)diameter).
Insert the other end of the same 1.1 mm (0.04 in)drill into rhe oil intake (i.2 mm (0.05 in) diame_ter).
Make sure the check ball moves smoothly andhas a stroke of approximately 4.0 mm (0.16 in).Check the oil jet operation with an air nozzle. ltshould take at least 200 kPa (2.0 kgf/cm,, 28 psi)to unseat the check ball.
NOTE: Replace the oil jet assembly if the nozzlers damaged or bent.

8. Mix the recommended antifreeze with an eoualamount of water in a clean container.
NOTE:
o Use only genuine Honda antifreeze/coolant.. For best corrosion protection. the coolant con_centration must be maintained year_round at50% minimum. Coolant concentrations less than50% may not provide sufficient protectionagainst corrosion or freezing.. Coolant concentrations greater than 60010 willimpair cooling efficiency and are not recom_mended.
CAUTION:
. Do not mix difforont brands ofar ilreeze/coolants.. Do not use additional rust inhibiiors or anti_rustproduqt3; they may not be compatible with thecoolant.

9. Pour coolant into the radiator up to the base of thefiller neck. and install the radiator cap looselv.
Start the engine and let it run until it warms up (theradiator fan comes on at least twicer.
Turn off the engine. Check the level in the radiator.add coolant if needed.
Put the radiator cap on tightly, then run the engineagain and check for leaks.

Loop status is indicated as "open" or "closed"'
Closed: Based on the HO2S output, the ECM/PCM deter-
mines the airlfuel ratio and controls the amount of inject-
ed fuel.
Open: lgnoring HO2S output, the ECM/PCM refers to sig-
nals from the TP, MAP, and ECT sensors to control the
amount of injected fuel.
The air/fuel ratio correction coefficient for correcting the
amount ot injected fuel when H02S feedback is in the
closed loop status When the signal from the HO2S is
weak, short term fuel trim gets higher, and the ECM/PCM
increases the amount of injected fuel The airlfuel ratio
gradually gets richer, causing a higher HO2S output

Lean Burn Control {D16Y5 engine: CvT)
The lean burn control system is based on the characteristic increase in crankshaft angular acceleration which occurs inwhen the air-fuel ratio gets leaner.
The CKF sensor, which is mounted on the crankshaft, monitors sngine speed, lf crankshaft angular acceleration falls belowa certain level (target air-fuel ratio level), the amount of injected fuel is reouceo.
lf crankshaft angular acceleration exceeds this level. the amount of fuel is increased.
This system improves fuel economy and driveability by controlling the amount of injected fuel in the lean burn rangeimmediatelv before combustion starts to deteriorate.
