G210B01A-AAT Checking the Battery Keep the battery clean. Any evidence of corrosion around the battery postsor terminals should be removed using a solution of household baking soda and warm water. After the battery ter-minals are dry, cover them with a light coating of grease.
Keep batteries out of the reach of children because batteries contain highly cor- rosive SULFURIC ACID. Donot allow battery acid to con- tact your skin, eyes, cloth- ing or paint finish.If any electrolyte gets into your eyes, flush your eyes with clean water for at least15 minutes and get immedi- ate medical attention. If pos- sible, continue to applywater with a sponge or cloth until medical attention is re- ceived.If electrolyte gets on your skin, thoroughly wash the contacted area.If you feel a pain or a burn- ing sensation, get medical attention immediately.Wear eye protection when charging or working near a battery.Always provide ventilation when working in an en- closed space.
WARNING: Always read the following instructions carefully when handling a battery.Keep lighted cigarettes and all other flames or sparks away from the battery.Hydrogen, which is a highly combustible gas, is always present in battery cells andmay explode if ignited.!
o When lifting a plastic-cased bat- tery, excessive pressure on the case may cause battery acid to leak, resulting in personal injury. Lift with a battery carrier or withyour hands on opposite corners.
o Never attempt to charge the bat-
tery when the battery cables areconnected.
o The electrical ignition system
works with high voltage.Never touch these components with the engine running or the ignition switched on.

32POWER STEERING FLUID LEVEL
G230A03A-GAT The power steering fluid level should be checked regularly. To check the power steering fluid level, be sure the ignition is "OFF", thencheck to make certain that the power steering fluid level is between the "MAX" and "MIN" level markings on the fluidreservoir. NOTE: Grinding noise from the power steer- ing pump may be heard immediatelyafter the engine is started in extremely cold conditions (below - 20°C). If the noise stops during warm up, there isno abnormal function in the system. HLC5006
CHECKING ELECTRIC COOLING FANS

G220B01A-AAT Checking Engine Cooling Fan The engine cooling fan should come on automatically if the engine coolant tem-perature is high. G220C01TB-GAT Checking Condenser Cooling Fan When the air conditioning is in opera- tion, the condenser cooling fan comes on automatically to be controlled by
ECU.

WARNING:
The cooling fan is controlled by en-gine coolant temperature and may sometimes operate even when the engine is not running. Use extremecaution when working near the blades of the cooling fan, so that you are not injured by a rotating fanblade. As the engine coolant temper- ature decreases the fan will automat- ically shut off. This is a normal con-dition.

33REMOVAL OF WATER FROM THE FUEL FILTER
1. Loosen the drain plug at the bottom
of the fuel filter.
2. Tighten the drain plug when water no longer comes out.
3. Check to be sure that the warning
lamp illuminates when the ignition key is turned to "ON", and that it goes off when the engine is started.If in doubt, consult your nearest authorized HYUNDAI dealer.
NOTE: It is recommended that water accu- mulated in the fuel filter should be removed by an authorized Hyundai dealer.

G240A01A-AAT POWER STEERING HOSES It is suggested that you check the power steering hose connections forfluid leakage at regular intervals. The power steering hoses should be re- placed if there is severe surface crack-ing, scuffing or worn spots. Deteriora- tion of the hose could cause prema- ture failure. G300A02B-GAT (DIESEL ENGINE) If the fuel filter warning light illuminates during driving, it indicates that waterhas accumulated in the fuel filter. If this occurs, remove the water as described below.
It is due to a power steering fluidcharacteristic in extremely cold con-ditions. Recommended Fluid Use PSF-3 type fluid NOTE: Do not start the engine when the power steering oil reservoir is empty.
!WARNING:
Be sure to carefully wipe away any water drained out in this manner, because the fuel mixed in the water might be ignited and result in a fire.

5. Open the hood.
6. Draw the vertical line (through the
center of each headlight beam pat-tern) and the horizontal line (throughthe center of each headlight beam pattern) on the aiming screen. And then, draw a horizontal parallel line at 30 mm (1.18 in.) under the horizontal line.
7. Adjust each cut-off line of the low beam to the parallel line with a phillipsscrewdriver - VERTICAL AIMING.

beam to each vertical line with aphillips screwdriver - HORIZONTAL AIMING. G290A01A

If the vehicle has had front body repair and the headlight assembly has beenreplaced, an headlight aiming should be checked using an aiming screen as shown in the illustration. Turn on theheadlight switch. (Low Beam Position)
1. Adjust headlights so that main axisof light is parallel to center line of the body and is aligned with point "P" shown in the illustration.
2. Dotted lines in the illustration show the center of headlights.

G290A03A-GAT Before performing aiming adjustment, make sure of the following.
1. Keep all tires inflated to the correct
pressure.
2. Place the vehicle on level ground
and press the front bumper and rear bumper down several times. Place the vehicle at a distance of 3,000 mm (118 in.) from the test wall.
3. See that the vehicle is unloaded (except for full levels of coolant,engine oil and fuel, and spare tire,jack, and tools). Have the driver or equivalent weight placed in driver's seat.
4. Clean the head lights lenses and turn on the headlight (low beam). G290B01B

1. Allow the bulb to cool. Wear eye
protection.
2. Open the engine hood.
3. Always grasp the bulb by its plastic
base, avoid touching the glass.
SPECIFICATIONS: "H" Horizontal center line of headlights from ground.Gasoline Engine: 656 mm (25.8 in.) Diesel Engine: 664 mm (26.1 in.) "W" Distance between each headlight center.Gasoline Engine/Diesel Engine : 1,078 mm (42.4 in.) "L" Distance between the headlights and the wall that the lights are testedagainst. : 3,000 mm (118 in.). G260A02A-AAT Before attempting to replace a light bulb, be sure the switch is turned to the "OFF" position. The next paragraph shows how to reachthe light bulbs so they may be changed. Be sure to replace the burned-out bulb with one of the same number and watt-age rating. See page 6-41 for the wattage descrip- tions.
CAUTION:
Keep the lamps out of contact with petroleum products, such as oil, gasoline, etc.

4. Using a spanner, remove the head-light assembly mounting bolts.

Your Hyundai is equipped with an
emission control system to meet all requirements of the Emission prohibi- tion rules of your province. There are three emission control sys-
tems which are as follows.
1) Crankcase emission control sys- tem
2) Evaporative emission control sys-
tem
3) Exhaust emission control system
In order to assure the proper function
of the emission control systems, it is recommended that you have your car inspected and maintained by an au- thorized Hyundai dealer in accordancewith the maintenance schedule in this manual. H010B01A-AAT
1. Crankcase Emission Control
System
The positive crankcase ventilation
system is employed to prevent airpollution caused by blow-by gases being emitted from the crankcase.This system supplies fresh air to the crankcase through the air intake hose. Inside the crankcase, the fresh airmixes with blow-by gases, which then pass through the PCV valve and into the induction system.

2. Evaporative Emission
Control System
The Evaporative Emission Control
System is designed to prevent fuelvapors from escaping into the atmo-sphere. Canister
Fuel vapors generated inside the fuel
tank are absorbed and stored in the canister. When the engine is running, the fuel vapors absorbed in the can-ister are drawn into the induction sys-tem through the purge control sole- noid valve. Purge Control Solenoid Valve (PCSV)
The purge control solenoid valve is
controlled by the Engine Control Mod- ule (ECM); when the engine coolant temperature is low during idling, the PCSV closes so that evaporated fuelis not taken into the engine. After the engine warms-up during ordinary driv- ing, the PCSV opens so as to intro-duce evaporated fuel to the engine. H010D01A-AAT
3. Exhaust Emission Control
System
The exhaust emission control system is a highly effective system which controls exhaust emission while main-taining good vehicle performance.

The catalytic converter is part of the exhaust emission control system. Itspurpose is to remove certain engine emission products from the engine's exhaust. It looks something like amuffler and is located underneath the car in the exhaust system.

About the Catalytic Converter
Exhaust gases passing through the
catalytic converter cause it to operate at very high temperatures. As a re-sult, the introduction of large amounts of unburned gasoline may cause it to overheat and create a fire hazard.This can be avoided by observing the following: H020D01S-GAT CATALYTIC CONVERTER ; For a diesel engine All Hyundai vehicles are equipped with oxidation type catalytic converter to reduce the carbon monoxide, hy- drocarbons and particulate containedin the exhaust gas.
WARNING:
o Use unleaded fuel only.
o Maintain your engine in good condition. Extremely high con- verter temperatures can result from improper operation of theelectrical, ignition or fuel injec- tion systems.
o If your engine stalls, pings, knocks, or is hard to start, takeyour car to your Hyundai dealer as soon as possible and havethe difficulty corrected.
o Avoid driving with a very low fuel level. If your run out of gasoline, it could cause the en- gine to misfire and result in ex-cessive loading of the catalytic converter.
o Avoid idling the engine for peri- ods longer than 10 minutes.
o Your Hyundai should not be ei- ther pushed or pulled to get itstarted. This can cause the cata- lytic converter to overload.

This system helps control oxides of nitrogen by recirculating a part of the exhaust gas into the engine.
o Take care not to stop your
Hyundai over any combustible material such as grass, paper, leaves or rags. As these materi- als could come in contact withthe catalytic converter and could cause a fire.
o Do not touch the catalytic con- verter or any other part of the exhaust system while the en-gine is running as it is very hot and could result in burns.
o Remember that your Hyundai dealer is your best source ofassistance.
