off your engine and restart only when you're ready to go.
o Remember, your Hyundai does not require extended warm-up. As soon as the engine isrunning smoothly, you can drive away. Invery cold weather, however, give your enginea slightly longer warm-up period.
o Don't "lug" or "over-rev" the engine. Lugging is driving too slowly in too high a gear result-ing in the engine bucking. If this happens, shiftto a lower gear. Over-revving is racing theengine beyond its safe limit. This can beavoided by shifting at the recommendedspeeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly. The air conditioning system is operated by enginepower so your fuel economy is reduced whenyou use it.
crease wear on these components. In addi-tion, driving with your foot resting on the brakepedal may cause the brakes to overheat, which reduces their effectiveness and maylead to more serious consequences.
o Take care of your tires. Keep them inflated to the recommended pressure. Incorrect infla-tion, either too much or too little, results inunnecessary tire wear. Check the tire pres-sures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned correctly. Improper alignment can result from hittingcurbs or driving too fast over irregular surfac-es. Poor alignment causes faster tire wearand may also result in other problems as wellas greater fuel consumption.
o Keep your car in good condition. For better fuel economy and reduced maintenancecosts, maintain your car in accordance withthe maintenance schedule in Section 5. If youdrive your car in severe conditions, morefrequent maintenance is required (see Sec-tion 5 for details).
o Keep your car clean. For maximum service, your Hyundai should be kept clean and free ofcorrosive materials. It is especially importantthat mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be allowed toaccumulate on the underside of the car. Thisextra weight can result in increased fuel con-sumption and also contribute to corrosion.
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unnecessary weight in your car. Weight reduces fuel economy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than neces- sary. If you are waiting (and not in traffic), turn C150A01A-AAT
SMOOTH CORNERING
Avoid braking or gear changing in corners, espe-cially when roads are wet. Ideally, corners shouldalways be taken under gentle acceleration. If youfollow these suggestions, tire wear will be held toa minimum. C160A01A-AAT WINTER DRIVING The more severe weather conditions of winter result in greater wear and other problems. Tominimize the problems of winter driving, youshould follow these suggestions:
If the indicator remains lit even after the enginehas been started, have your car checked by anauthorized Hyundai dealer. NOTE:
1) When the TCS-OFF indicator illuminates,
traction control is automatically deacti-vated for safety.
2) This warning function is not provided when the driver selects the TCS-OFF mode.
C140A01A-GAT DRIVING FOR ECONOMY You can save fuel and get more kilometers from your car if you follow these suggestions:
o Drive smoothly. Accelerate at a moderate rate. Don't make "jack-rabbit" starts or full- throttle shifts and maintain a steady cruisingspeed. Don't race between stoplights. Try toadjust your speed to that of the other traffic soyou don't have to change speeds unneces-sarily. Avoid heavy traffic whenever possible.Always maintain a safe distance from othervehicles so you can avoid unnecessary brak-ing. This also reduces brake wear.
o Drive at a moderate speed. The faster you drive, the more fuel your car uses. Driving ata moderate speed, especially on the high-way, is one of the most effective ways toreduce fuel consumption.
o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal. This can increase fuel consumption and also in-

2- 12 C160G01A-GAT To Keep Locks from FreezingTo keep the locks from freezing, squirt an ap- proved de-icer fluid or glycerine into the keyopening. If a lock is covered with ice, squirt it withan approved de-icing fluid to remove the ice. Ifthe lock is frozen internally, you may be able tothaw it out by using a heated key. Handle theheated key with care to avoid injury. NOTE: The proper temperature for using the immo-bilizer key is from -40°C to 80°C. If you heatthe immobilizer key over 80°C to open thefrozen lock, it may cause damage to thetransponder in its head. C160H01A-AAT Use Approved Anti-Freeze in Window Washer System To keep the water in the window washer system from freezing, add an approved anti-freeze solu-tion in accordance with instructions on the con-tainer. Window washer anti-freeze is availablefrom Hyundai dealers and most auto parts out-lets. Do not use engine coolant or other types ofanti-freeze as these may damage the finish.
C160B01A-GAT Snowy or Icy ConditionsTo drive your vehicle in deep snow, it may be necessary to use snow tires or to install tirechains on your tires. If snow tires are needed, itis necessary to select tires equivalent in size andtype to the original equipment tires. Failure to doso may adversely affect the safety and handlingof your car. Speeding, rapid acceleration, sud-den brake applications, and sharp turns arepotentially very hazardous practices. Duringdeceleration, use engine braking to the fullestextent. Sudden brake applications on snowy oricy roads may cause skids to occur. You need tokeep sufficient distance between the vehicle infront and your vehicle. Also, apply the brakegently. It should be noted that installing tire chainson the tire will provide a greater driving force, butwill not prevent side skids. NOTE: Tire chains are not legal in all provinces.Check province laws before fitting tire chains. C160C01A-AAT Use High Quality Ethylene Glycol Coolant Your Hyundai is delivered with high quality ethyl- ene glycol coolant in the cooling system. It is theonly type of coolant that should be used becauseit helps prevent corrosion in the cooling system, lubricates the water pump and prevents freezing.Be sure to replace or replenish your coolant in
C160D01F-AAT Check Battery and Cables Winter puts additional burdens on the battery system. Visually inspect the battery and cablesas described in Section 6 (See page 6-18). Thelevel of charge in your battery can be checkedby your Hyundai dealer or a service station. C160E01A-AAT Change to "Winter Weight" Oil if Necessary In some climates it is recommended that a lower viscosity "winter weight" oil be used during coldweather. See Section 9 for recommendations. Ifyou aren't sure what weight oil you should use, consult your Hyundai dealer. C160F01F-GAT Check Spark Plugs and Ignition Sys- tem Inspect your spark plugs as described in Section 6 (See page 6-8) and replace them if necessary. Also check all ignition wiring and components tobe sure they are not cracked, worn or damagedin any way.
accordance with the maintenance schedule inSection 5. Before winter, have your coolant test-ed to assure that its freezing point is sufficient forthe temperatures anticipated during the winter.

Responsibilty For Maintenance
It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner/driver to ensure that all routine mainte- nance services are undertaken in line with the recommendations specified in Section 5 of this manual. In addition, in order to ensure continued validity of the new vehiclewarranty and safe operation of the vehicle, non scheduled maintenance/running repairs should be undertaken at the earliest available opportunity. Under severe operating conditions, more frequent maintenance is required. Detailsof the maintenance schedule for such conditions are also given in section 5. It is recommended that all maintenance operations and repairs are entrusted to a franchised Hyundai dealer to ensure that the latest repair methods, specializedtooling and genuine Hyundai parts are used to ensure the continued reliability and safety of the vehicle.

o Don't "ride" the brake or clutch pedal. This can increase fuel consumption and also increase wear on these components. In addition, driving with your foot resting on the brake pedalmay cause the brakes to overheat, which reduces their effectiveness and may lead to more serious con-sequences.
o Take care of your tires. Keep them
inflated to the recommended pres-sure. Incorrect inflation, either too much or too little, results in unnec- essary tire wear. Check the tire pres-sures at least once a month.
o Be sure that the wheels are aligned
correctly. Improper alignment canresult from hitting curbs or driving too fast over irregular surfaces. Poor alignment causes faster tire wearand may also result in other prob- lems as well as greater fuel con- sumption.
o Keep your car in good condition. For better fuel economy and reducedmaintenance costs, maintain yourcar in accordance with the mainte- nance schedule in Section 5. If you drive your car in severe conditions, more frequent maintenance is re-quired (see Section 5 for details).
o Keep your car clean. For maximum service, your car should be keptclean and free of corrosive materi-als. It is especially important that mud, dirt, ice, etc. not be allowed to accumulate on the underside of thecar. This extra weight can result in increased fuel consumption and also contribute to corrosion.
o Travel lightly. Don't carry unneces- sary weight in your car. Weight is anenemy of good fuel economy.
o Don't let the engine idle longer than necessary. If you are waiting (andnot in traffic), turn off your engineand restart only when you're ready to go.
o Remember, your car does not re- quire extended warm-up. As soonas the engine is running smoothly, you can drive away. In very coldweather, however, give your engine a slightly longer warm-up period. o Don't "lug" or "over-rev" the engine.
Lugging is driving too slowly in too high a gear resulting in the engine bucking. If this happens to you, shift to a lower gear.Over-revving is racing the engine
beyond its safe limit. This can be avoided by shifting at the recom-mended speeds.
o Use your air conditioning sparingly.
The air conditioning system is
operated by the engine power so your fuel economy is reduced when you use it.

2MAINTENANCE AND SER- VICING REQUIREMENTS
SF020A1-E To ensure the continued reliability and safety of the vehicle, certain routinemaintenance operations are required at specific mileage or time intervals. It is the responsibility of the vehicle owner to ensure that the maintenance schedules shown in both this OwnersManual and the Warranty and Service Passport are adhered to. The new vehicle warranty may be invalidated if the routine maintenance operations are not performed in line with the recommendations outlined andthe safety and durability of the vehicle adversely affected. It is recommended that all mainte- nance operations with the exception of the daily operating checks are en-trusted to a Hyundai dealer to ensure that the latest repair and maintenance procedures and specialized servicingtools are employed. In addition, the use of genuine Hyundai replacement parts will ensure that the vehicle safetyand performance will not be compro- mised. NOTE:
The inspection and testing of cer-
tain electronic fuel injection/enginemanagement and automatic trans- mission control systems requirespecialised electronic equipment specifically designed for Hyundai vehicles. The use of general pur-pose electrical test equipment may result in damage to the control unit microprocessors. SF020C2-E
Specified Scheduled Procedures
The Specified scheduled procedures
are listed in the maintenance charts beginning at page 5-3. The operations specified must be performed at thetime or mileage intervals shown irre- spective of whether the mileage inter- val has been reached before the speci-fied time interval.
Certain lubricants and components
degrade with both time and mileage (e.g. engine oil and brake fluid) and therefore it is not permissable to basethe maintenance schedule upon mile- age alone. It is strongly recommended that the maintenance operations areperformed by the factory-trained or distributor-trained technicians at your Hyundai dealer because of the needfor specialized knowledge and tooling and to ensure that no possibility of invalidating the manufacturers warrantyexists. The maintenance schedules relate to
vehicles operated under normal condi-tions, vehicles which are operated under adverse conditions will require more frequent maintenance which isdescribed at page 5-6.
