Trouble Diagnosis IntroductionINFOID:0000000001325927
INTRODUCTION
The engine has an ECM to control major systems such as fuel con-
trol, ignition control, idle air c
ontrol system, etc. The ECM accepts
input signals from sensors and instantly drives actuators. It is essen-
tial that both input and output si gnals are proper and stable. At the
same time, it is important that there are no malfunctions such as vac-
uum leaks, fouled spark plugs, or other malfunctions with the engine.
It is much more difficult to diagnose an incident that occurs intermit-
tently rather than continuously. Most intermittent incidents are
caused by poor electric connections or improper wiring. In this case,
careful checking of suspected circuits may help prevent the replace-
ment of good parts.
A visual check only may not find t he cause of the incidents. A road
test with CONSULT-III (or GST) or a circuit tester connected should
be performed. Follow the WORK FLOW on “WORK FLOW”.
Before undertaking actual checks, take a few minutes to talk with a
customer who approaches with a driveability complaint. The cus-
tomer can supply good information about such incidents, especially
intermittent ones. Find out what symptoms are present and under
what conditions they occur. A DIAGNOSTIC WORKSHEET like the
example on “DIAGNOSTIC WORKSHEET” should be used.
Start your diagnosis by looking for conventional malfunctions first.
This will help troubleshoot driveability malfunctions on an electroni-
cally controlled engine vehicle.

NG >> 1. Repair or clean spark plug.
2. GO TO 9.
9.CHECK FUNCTION OF IGNITION COIL-III
1. Reconnect the initial spark plugs.
2. Crank engine for about 3 seconds, and recheck whether spark is generated between the spark plug and the grounded portion.
OK or NG
OK >> INSPECTION END
NG >> Replace spark plug(s) with standard type one(s). For spark plug type, refer to MA-17, "
Changing
Spark Plugs (Platinum-Tipped Type)".
10.CHECK COMPRESSION PRESSURE
Check compression pressure. Refer to EM-100, "
On-Vehicle Service".
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 11.
NG >> Check pistons, piston rings, valves, valve seats and cylinder head gaskets.
11 .CHECK FUEL PRESSURE
1. Install all removed parts.
2. Release fuel pressure to zero. Refer to EC-87, "
Fuel Pressure Check".
3. Install fuel pressure gauge and check fuel pressure. Refer to EC-87, "
Fuel Pressure Check".
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 13.
NG >> GO TO 12.
12.DETECT MALFUNCTIONING PART
Check the following.
 Fuel pump and circuit (Refer to EC-558
.)
 Fuel pressure regulator (Refer to EC-87, "
Fuel Pressure Check".)
 Fuel lines (Refer to MA-15, "
Checking Fuel Line".)
 Fuel filter for clogging

13.CHECK IGNITION TIMING
Check the following items. Refer to EC-80, "

1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Disconnect spark plug and connect a known-good spark plug.
3. Crank engine for about 3 seconds, and recheck whet her spark is generated between the spark plug and
the grounded metal portion.
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 8.
NG >> Check ignition coil, power transistor and their circuits. Refer to EC-569
.
8.CHECK SPARK PLUG
Check the spark plugs and check for fouling, etc.
OK or NG
OK >> GO TO 9.
NG >> Repair or replace spark plug (s) with standard type one (s). For spark plug type ignition coil. Refer to MA-17,
"Changing Spark Plugs (Platinum-Tipped Type)".
9.CHECK FUNCTION OF IGNITION COIL-III

10.CHECK FUEL INJECTOR
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Remove fuel injector assembly. Refer to EM-45
.
Keep fuel hose and all fuel injectors connected to fuel injector gallery.
3. Disconnect all ignition coil harness connectors.
4. Reconnect all fuel injector harness connectors disconnected.
5. Turn ignition switch ON. Make sure fuel does not drip from fuel injector.
OK or NG
OK (Does not drip.)>>GO TO 11.
NG (Drips.)>>Replace the fuel injector(s) from which fuel is dripping.
11 .CHECK INTERMITTENT INCIDENT
Refer to EC-139
.

Trouble Diagnosis IntroductionINFOID:0000000001326523
INTRODUCTION
The engine has an ECM to control major systems such as fuel con-
trol, ignition control, idle air control system, etc. The ECM accepts
input signals from sensors and instantly drives actuators. It is essen-
tial that both input and output signals are proper and stable. At the
same time, it is important that there are no malfunctions such as vac-
uum leaks, fouled spark plugs, or
other malfunctions with the engine.
It is much more difficult to diagnose an incident that occurs intermit-
tently rather than continuously. Most intermittent incidents are
caused by poor electric connections or improper wiring. In this case,
careful checking of suspected circuits may help prevent the replace-
ment of good parts.
A visual check only may not find the cause of the incidents. A road
test with CONSULT-III (or GST) or a circuit tester connected should
be performed. Follow the Work Flow on "Work Flow".
Before undertaking actual checks, take a few minutes to talk with a
customer who approaches with a dr iveability complaint. The cus-
tomer can supply good information about such incidents, especially
intermittent ones. Find out what symptoms are present and under
what conditions they occur. A Di agnostic Worksheet like the example
on "Worksheet Sample" should be used.
Start your diagnosis by looking fo r conventional malfunctions first.
This will help troubleshoot driveability malfunctions on an electroni-
cally controlled engine vehicle.

10.CHECK FUEL INJECTOR
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Remove fuel tube assembly. Refer to EM-190
.
Keep fuel hose and all fuel inje ctors connected to fuel tube.
3. Reconnect all fuel injector harness connectors disconnected.
4. Disconnect all ignition coil harness connectors.
5. Turn ignition switch ON. Make sure fuel does not drip from fuel injector.
OK or NG
OK (Does not drip.)>>GO TO 11.
NG (Drips.)>>Replace the fuel injector(s) from which fuel is dripping.
11 .CHECK INTERMITTENT INCIDENT

which the vehicle is mainly operated. After 60,000 miles (96,000 km) or 48 months, continue the periodic
maintenance at the same mileage/time intervals.

Schedule 1Follow Periodic Maintenance Schedule 1 if the driving habits frequently include
one or more of the following driving conditions:
 Repeated short trips of less than 5 miles (8 km).
