.Immediately after inflation, several
front air bag system components will
be hot. Do not touch them; you may
severely burn yourself.
. No unauthorized changes should be
made to any components or wiring of
the supplemental air bag system. This
is to prevent accidental inflation of
the supplemental air bag or damage
to the supplemental air bag system.
. Do not make unauthorized changes
to your vehicle’s electrical system,
suspension system or front end struc-
ture. This could affect proper opera-
tion of the front air bag system.
. Tampering with the air bag system
may result in serious personal injury.
Tampering includes changes to the
steering wheel and the instrument
panel assembly by placing material
over the steering wheel pad and
above the instrument panel or by
installing additional trim material
around the air bag system.
. Removing or modifying the front
passenger seat may affect the func-
tion of the air bag system and result
in serious personal injury.
. Modifying or tampering with the
front passenger seat may result in
serious personal injury. For example, do not change the front seats by
placing material on the seat cushion
or by installing additional trim mate-
rial, such as seat covers, on the seat
that is not specifically designed to
assure proper air bag operation.
Additionally, do not stow any objects
under the front passenger seat or the
seat cushion and seatback. Such
objects may interfere with the proper
operation of the occupant classifica-
tion sensors.
. No unauthorized changes should be
made to any components or wiring of
the seat belt system. This may affect
the front air bag system. Tampering
with the seat belt system may result
in serious personal injury.
. It is recommended you visit an
INFINITI retailer for work on and
around the front air bag. It is also
recommended you visit an INFINITI
retailer for installation of electrical
equipment. The Supplemental Re-
straint System (SRS) wiring har-
nesses* should not be modified or
disconnected. Unauthorized electrical
test equipment and probing devices
should not be used on the air bag
system. .
A cracked windshield should be re-
placed immediately by a qualified
repair facility. A cracked windshield
could affect the function of the
supplemental air bag system.
* The SRS wiring harness connectors are
yellow and orange for easy identifica-
tion.

BAG
The knee air bag is located in the knee
bolster, on the driver’s and front passenger’s
sides. All of the information, cautions and
warnings in this manual apply and must be
followed. The knee air bag is designed to
inflate in higher severity frontal collisions,
although it may inflate if the forces in
another type of collision are similar to those
of a higher severity frontal impact. It may
not inflate in certain collisions.
WAB0181X
Front passenger’s side
Vehicle damage (or lack of it) is not always
an indication of proper knee air bag opera-
tion.
When the knee air bag inflates, a fairly loud
noise may be heard, followed by release of
smoke. This smoke is not harmful and does
not indicate a fire. Care should be taken not
to inhale it, as it may cause irritation and
choking. Those with a history of a breathing
condition should get fresh air promptly.
The knee air bag helps to cushion the impact
force on the knees of the driver and front
passenger. It can help reduce serious injuries.
However, an inflating knee air bag may
cause abrasions or other injuries. The knee air bag provides restraint to the lower body.
The knee air bag inflates quickly in order to
help protect the occupants. Because of this,
the force of the knee air bag inflating can
increase the risk of injury if the occupant is
too close to, or is against, this air bag module
during inflation. The knee air bag will deflate
quickly after the collision is over OR the knee
air bag will remain inflated for a short time.
The knee air bag operates only when the
ignition switch is placed in the ON position.
After placing the ignition switch in the ON
position, the supplemental air bag warning
light illuminates. The supplemental air bag
warning light will turn off after about 7
seconds if the system is operational.
WARNING
.
Do not place any objects between the
knee bolster and the driver’s or front
passenger’s seat. Such objects may
become dangerous projectiles and
cause injury if a knee air bag inflates.
. Right after inflation, the knee air bag
system components will be hot. Do
not touch them; you may severely
burn yourself.
. No unauthorized changes should be
made to any components or wiring of

FRONT SEAT-MOUNTED SIDE-
IMPACT SUPPLEMENTAL AIR
BAG AND ROOF-MOUNTED
CURTAIN SIDE-IMPACT AND
ROLLOVER SUPPLEMENTAL AIR
BAG SYSTEMS
The side air bags are located in the outside
of the seatback of the front seats. The
curtain air bags are located in the side roof
rails.
All of the information, cautions and
warnings in this manual apply and must be
followed. The side air bags and curtain air
bags are designed to inflate in higher
severity side collisions, although they may
Page 91 of 590

inflate if the forces in another type of
collision are similar to those of a higher
severity side impact. They are designed to
inflate on the side where the vehicle is
impacted. They may not inflate in certain
side collisions on the side where the vehicle is
impacted.
Curtain air bags are also designed to inflate
in certain types of rollover collisions or near
rollovers. As a result, certain vehicle move-
ments (for example, during severe off road-
ing) may cause the curtain air bags to inflate.
Vehicle damage (or lack of it) is not always
an indication of proper side air bag and
curtain air bag operation.
When side air bags and curtain air bags
inflate, a fairly loud noise may be heard,
followed by release of smoke. This smoke is
not harmful and does not indicate a fire.
Care should be taken not to inhale it, as it
may cause irritation and choking. Those with
a history of a breathing condition should get
fresh air promptly.
Side air bags, along with the use of seat
belts, help to cushion the impact force on the
chest and pelvis of the front occupants.
Curtain air bags help to cushion the impact
force to the head of occupants in the front
and rear (2nd and 3rd) outboard seating
positions. They can help save lives and
reduce serious injuries. However, an inflatingside air bag or curtain air bag may cause
abrasions or other injuries. Side air bags and
curtain air bags do not provide restraint to
the lower body.
The seat belts should be correctly worn and
the driver and passenger seated upright as
far as practical away from the side air bag.
Rear seat passengers should be seated as far
away as practical from the door finishers
and side roof rails. The side air bags and
curtain air bags inflate quickly in order to
help protect the occupants. Because of this,
the force of the side air bags and curtain air
bags inflating can increase the risk of injury if
the occupant is too close to, or is against,
these air bag modules during inflation. In a
rollover, the curtain air bags on both sides
are designed to inflate. Under both side-
impact situations, the curtain air bags will
remain inflated for a short period of time.
The side air bags and curtain air bags
operate only when the ignition switch is in
the ON position.
After pushing the ignition switch to the ON
position, the supplemental air bag warning
light illuminates. The air bag warning light
will turn off after about 7 seconds if the
systems are operational.
WARNING
.
Do not place any objects near the
seatback of the front seats. Also, do
not place any objects (an umbrella,
bag, etc.) between the front door
finisher and the front seat. Such
objects may become dangerous pro-
jectiles and cause injury if side air bag
inflates.
. Right after inflation, several side air
bags and curtain air bag system
components will be hot. Do not touch
them; you may severely burn your-
self.
. No unauthorized changes should be
made to any components or wiring of
side air bag and curtain air bags. This
is to prevent damage to or accidental
inflation of the side air bag and
curtain air bag systems.
. Do not make unauthorized changes
to your vehicle’s electrical system,
suspension system or side panel. This
could affect proper operation of the
side air bag and curtain air bag
systems.
. Tampering with the air bag system
may result in serious personal injury.
For example, do not change the front

1-68Safety — seats, seat belts and supplemental restraint system
seats by placing material near the
seatback or by installing additional
trim material, such as seat covers,
around the side air bags.
. Removing or modifying the front
passenger seat may affect the func-
tion of the air bag system and result
in serious personal injury.
. It is recommended you visit an
INFINITI retailer for work on and
around the side air bag and curtain
air bag. It is also recommended you
visit an INFINITI retailer for installa-
tion of electrical equipment. The
Supplemental Restraint System
(SRS) wiring harnesses* should not
be modified or disconnected. Un-
authorized electrical test equipment
and probing devices should not be
used on the side-impact air bag
system.
* The SRS wiring harness connectors are
yellow and orange for easy identifica-
tion.
When selling your vehicle, we request that
you inform the buyer about the side air bag
and curtain air bag systems and guide the
buyer to the appropriate sections in this
Owner’s Manual.SEAT BELTS WITH PRETEN-
SIONERS (front and second row
outboard seats)
WARNING
. The pretensioners cannot be reused
after activation. They must be re-
placed together with the retractor
and buckle as a unit.
. If the vehicle becomes involved in a
collision but a pretensioner is not
activated, be sure to have the pre-
tensioner system checked and, if
necessary, replaced. It is recom-
mended you visit an INFINITI retailer
for this service.
. No unauthorized changes should be
made to any components or wiring of
the pretensioner system. This is to
prevent damage to or accidental
activation of the pretensioners. Tam-
pering with the pretensioner system
may result in serious personal injury.
. It is recommended you visit an
INFINITI retailer for work on and
around the pretensioner system. It is
also recommended you visit an
INFINITI retailer for installation of
electrical equipment. Unauthorized electrical test equipment and probing
devices should not be used on the
pretensioner system.
. If you need to dispose of a preten-
sioner or scrap the vehicle, it is
recommended you visit an INFINITI
retailer for this service. Correct pre-
tensioner disposal procedures are set
forth in the appropriate INFINITI
Service Manual. Incorrect disposal
procedures could cause personal in-
jury.
The pretensioner system may activate with
the supplemental air bag system in certain
types of collisions. Working with the seat
belt retractor, it helps tighten the seat belt
when the vehicle becomes involved in certain
types of collisions, helping to restrain front
and second row outboard seats occupants.
The pretensioner is encased with the seat
belt retractor and buckle anchor. These seat
belts are used the same way as conventional
seat belts.
When a pretensioner activates, smoke is
released and a loud noise may be heard. The
smoke is not harmful, and it does not
indicate a fire. Care should be taken not to
inhale it as it may cause irritation and
choking. Those with a history of a breathing
condition should get fresh air promptly.

SUPPLEMENTAL AIR BAG
WARNING LIGHT
The supplemental air bag warning light,
displayingin the instrument panel,
monitors the circuits for the air bag systems,
pretensioners and all related wiring.
When the ignition switch is in the ON
position, the supplemental air bag warning
light illuminates for about 7 seconds and
then turns off. This means the system is
operational.
If any of the following conditions occur, the
air bag and/or pretensioner systems need
servicing: .
The supplemental air bag warning light
remains on after approximately 7 sec-
onds.
. The supplemental air bag warning light
flashes intermittently.
. The supplemental air bag warning light
does not come on at all.
Under these conditions, the air bag and/or
pretensioner systems may not operate prop-
erly. They must be checked and repaired. It is
recommended you visit an INFINITI retailer
for this service.
WARNING
If the supplemental air bag warning light
is on, it could mean that the front air
bag, knee air bag, side air bag, curtain air
bag and/or pretensioner systems will
not operate in an accident. To help avoid
injury to yourself or others, have your
vehicle checked as soon as possible. It is
recommended you visit an INFINITI
retailer for this service.
REPAIR AND REPLACEMENT
PROCEDURE
The front air bags, knee air bags, side air
bags, curtain air bags and pretensioners are
designed to activate on a one-time-only
basis. As a reminder, unless it is damaged,
the supplemental air bag warning light will
remain illuminated after inflation has oc-
curred. These systems should be repaired
and/or replaced as soon as possible. It is
recommended you visit an INFINITI retailer
for this service.
When maintenance work is required on the
vehicle, the front air bags, knee air bags, side
air bags, curtain air bags, pretensioners and
related parts should be pointed out to the
person conducting the maintenance. The
ignition switch should always be in the
LOCK position when working under the
hood or inside the vehicle.
WARNING
. Once a front air bag, knee air bag,
side air bag or curtain air bag has
inflated, the air bag module will not
function again and must be replaced.
Additionally, the activated preten-
sioner must also be replaced. The air
bag module and pretensioner should

®Universal Transceiver
operation, see “HomeLink®Universal Trans-
ceiver (Type A)” (P.2-81).
Smart Rearview Mirror (if so
equipped)
WARNING
. Failure to follow the warnings and
instructions for proper use of the
Smart Rearview Mirror could result
in serious injury or death.
— The Smart Rearview Mirror is a convenience feature but it is not a
substitute for proper vehicle op-
eration. The system has areas
where objects cannot be viewed.
Check the blind spot of the Smart
Rearview Mirror before vehicle
operation. The driver is always
responsible for safe driving.
— Do not disassemble or modify the Smart Rearview Mirror, the cam- era unit or wirings. If you do, it
may result in accidents or fire. In
case you notice smoke or smell
coming from the Smart Rearview
Mirror, stop using the system
immediately. It is recommended
that you see an INFINITI retailer
for servicing.
— Do not operate the Smart Rear- view Mirror while driving. Doing
so can be a distraction and it could
lose control of your vehicle and
cause an accident or serious in-
jury.
— Do not gaze into the Smart Rear- view Mirror display during driv-
ing. It may cause a distraction and
it could lose control of your vehi-
cle and cause an accident or
serious injury.
— Do not put a cigarette or flames to the Smart Rearview Mirror, the
camera unit or wirings. It may
cause a fire.
. Be sure to adjust the Smart Rearview
Mirror before driving. Switch the
system to the conventional rearview
mirror mode and be properly seated
on the driver’s seat. Then adjust the
mirror so as to see the rear window properly. Driving without adjusting
the mirror may cause difficulty in
watching the display at Smart Rear-
view Mirror mode (camera view
mode) due to the reflection from the
surface of the mirror.
. If the Smart Rearview Mirror mal-
functions, immediately switch the
system to the conventional rearview
mirror mode.
. When strong light (for example, sun-
light or high beams from following
vehicles) enters the camera, a light
beam or a glaring light may appear on
the monitor screen of the Smart
Rearview Mirror. In that case, switch
the system to the conventional rear-
view mirror mode appropriately.
. If dirt, rain or snow accumulates on
the exterior glass surface covering
the camera, the Smart Rearview
Mirror may not display objects
clearly. Use of the rear window
wiper/washer may improve visibility,
but if not, switch the Smart Rearview
Mirror to the conventional rearview
mirror mode until a time the glass
covering the camera can be cleaned.

WARNING
.Do not leave children or adults who
would normally require the support
of others alone in your vehicle. Pets
should not be left alone either. They
could accidentally injure themselves
or others through inadvertent opera-
tion of the vehicle. Also, on hot,
sunny days, temperatures in a closed
vehicle could quickly become high
enough to cause severe or possibly
fatal injuries to people or animals.
. Properly secure all cargo to help
prevent it from sliding or shifting.
Do not place cargo higher than the
seatbacks. In a sudden stop or colli-
sion, unsecured cargo could cause
personal injury.
EXHAUST GAS (carbon monoxide)
WARNING
.Do not breathe exhaust gases; they
contain colorless and odorless carbon
monoxide. Carbon monoxide is dan-
gerous. It can cause unconsciousness
or death. .
If you suspect that exhaust fumes are
entering the vehicle, drive with all
windows fully open, and have the
vehicle inspected immediately.
. Do not run the engine in closed spaces
such as a garage.
. Do not park the vehicle with the
engine running for any extended
length of time.
. Keep the liftgate closed while driving,
otherwise exhaust gases could be
drawn into the passenger compart-
ment. If you must drive with the
liftgate open, follow these precau-
tions:
1) Open all the windows.
2) Set the
air recirculation to
off and the fan control to high to
circulate the air.
. If electrical wiring or other cable
connections must pass to a trailer
through the seal on the liftgate or the
body, follow the manufacturer’s re-
commendation to prevent carbon
monoxide entry into the vehicle.
. The exhaust system and body should
be inspected by a qualified mechanic
whenever:
— The vehicle is raised for service. — You suspect that exhaust fumes
are entering into the passenger
compartment.
— You notice a change in the sound of the exhaust system.
— You have had an accident invol- ving damage to the exhaust sys-
tem, underbody, or rear of the
vehicle.
THREE-WAY CATALYST
The three-way catalyst is an emission con-
trol device installed in the exhaust system.
Exhaust gases in the three-way catalyst are
burned at high temperatures to help reduce
pollutants.
WARNING
. The exhaust gas and the exhaust
system are very hot. Keep people,
animals or flammable materials away
from the exhaust system compo-
nents.
. Do not stop or park the vehicle over
flammable materials such as dry
grass, waste paper or rags. They
may ignite and cause a fire.

. Some states or provinces have specific
regulations and speed limits for vehicles
that are towing trailers. Obey the local
speed limits.
. Check your hitch, trailer wiring harness
connections, and trailer wheel lug nuts
after 50 miles (80 km) of travel and at
every break.
. When launching a boat, do not allow the
water level to go over the exhaust tail
pipe or rear bumper.
. Make sure you disconnect the trailer
lights before backing the trailer into the
water or the trailer lights may burn out.TOW mode
Using TOW mode is recommended when
pulling a heavy trailer or hauling a heavy
load. Push the TOW mode switch to activate
TOW mode. The TOW mode indicator light
in the meter illuminates when TOW mode is
selected. Push the TOW mode switch again
to turn TOW mode off. TOW mode is
automatically cancelled when the ignition
switch is placed in the OFF position.
TOW mode includes the following features:
. Grade logic — Adjusts transmission shifts
when pulling a trailer or hauling a load up
a grade.
. Downhill Speed Control (DSC) — auto-
matically downshifts when driving down
a grade with a trailer or heavy load to
help control vehicle speed.
Driving the vehicle in the TOW mode with no
trailer/load or light trailer/light load will not
cause any damage. However, fuel economy
may be reduced and the transmission/
engine driving characteristics may feel unu-
sual.
Trailer Sway Control
To minimize trailer sway, your vehicle may
apply braking to individual wheels based on
input from your vehicle sensors and vehicle
speed. Trailer Sway Control is a function of
the Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system and is active when the VDC function is
enabled.
CAUTION
If the VDC OFF switch is on (meaning
VDC system OFF), the Trailer Sway
Control is also disabled.
When Trailer Sway Control is in operation,
the VDC warning light blinks. When vehicle
control is regained, VDC warning light will
turn OFF.
For additional information about the VDC
system, see “Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC)
system” (P.5-135).
If Trailer Sway Control activates:
1. Take your foot off the accelerator pedal to allow the vehicle to coast and steer as
straight ahead as the road conditions
allow. This combination will help stabilize
the vehicle.
CAUTION
Do not try to correct trailer sway by
steering or applying the brakes.
