108KNOWING YOUR CAR
Under no circumstances should aftermarket
operations be carried out involving steering
system or steering column modifications (e.g.
installation of anti-theft device). This could nega-
tively affect performance and safety, invalidate the
warranty, cause serious safety problems and also
result in vehicle non-compliance with type-ap-
proval requirements.
Before servicing the car, switch off the engine
and remove the key from the ignition device
to activate the steering lock. This is especially
important when the car wheels are not touching the
ground. If this is not possible (i.e. if the key must be
kept in the MAR position or the engine must be kept
running), remove the main electric power steering
system fuse.On some versions, with the CITY function ac-
tivated, the SPORT function is not available.
To activate the SPORT function, deactivate the
CITY function and vice versa, because they are rec-
iprocally incompatible.
IMPORTANT The function i s activated about 5 s econds
after the S PORT button is pressed.
IMPORTANT The s teering may become stiffer during
parking manoeuvres including a great deal of s teering.
This is normal and caus ed by the system preventing the
electric control motor overheating. No repair s are needed.
The power s teering system will s tart working normall y
again the next time the car i s u sed.

IMPORTANT The steering may become slightly stiff fol-
lowing parking manoeuvres involving a lot of steering.
This is normal and is caused by a system to prevent the
motor from overheating. No servicing is required. The
power steering system will s tart working normall y again
the next time the car is used.TPMS SYSTEM
(Tyre Pressure Monitoring System)
(for vers ions/markets , where provided)
The car may be equipped with a TPMS (Tyre Pre ssure
Monitoring System). This system compris es a radio fre-
quency transmitter fitted to each wheel (on the wheel rim
ins ide the ty re), which i s able to send information on the
t y re inflation pressure of each wheel to the control unit.
IMPORTANT NOTES ABOUT THE TPMS
The fault indication s are not s tored and will therefore
not be dis played after the engine ha s been s witched off
and then on again. If the fault condition s pers is t, the con-
trol unit will s end the relative indication s to the ins tru-
ment panel only after the car ha s been in motion for a
s hort time.
Before starting any servicing operation, stop
the engine and remove the key from the ig-
nition switch to operate the steering lock, par-
ticularly when the wheels do not touch the ground.
If this is not possible (i.e. if the key must be kept
in the MAR position or the engine must be kept run-
ning), remove the main electric power steering sys-
tem fuse.

158SAFETY
PRETENSIONERS
The car is equipped with front seat belt pretensioners in
case of a severe frontal impact. This guarantees the per-
fect adherence of the seat belts to the occupants’ bodies
before the restraining action begins.
It is evident that the pretensioners have operated when the
belt withdraws toward the retractor.
This car is also equipped with a second pretensioner (fit-
ted in the kick plate area). Its activation is signalled by
the shortening of the metal cable.
A slight discharge of smoke may be produced during the
activation of the pretensioner which is not harmful and
does not indicate any fire hazard.
IMPORTANT To obtain the highest degree of protection
from the action of the pretensioner, wear the seat belt tight
to the chest and pelvis.
The pretensioner does not require any maintenance or lu-
brication: any changes to its original conditions will in-
validate its efficiency. If, due to unusual natural events
(floods, sea storms, etc.), the device has been affected by
water and mud, it must be replaced.
The pretensioner may be used only once. Go
to a Lancia Dealership to have it replaced
after it has been deployed.
Operations which lead to impacts, vibrations
or localised heating (over 100°C for a max-
imum of six hours) in the area around the
pretensioner may damage or deploy it. Contact a
Lancia Dealership should intervention be necessary
on these components.
LOAD LIMITERS
To increase passenger safety, the retractors contain a de-
vice which doses the force acting on the chest and shoul-
ders during the belts’ restraining action in the event of
front collisions.

STARTING AND DRIVING185
3
Proceed as follows:
❍engage the handbrake;
❍ put the gear lever into neutral;
❍ turn the ignition key to MAR: the
mandYwarn-
ing lights on the instrument panel will turn on;
❍ wait for the warning lights
Yandmto turn off. The
hotter the engine is, the quicker this will happen;
❍ fully depress the clutch pedal without operating the ac-
celerator;
❍ turn the ignition key to AVV as soon as the
mwarn-
ing light goes out. Waiting too long will waste the heat-
ing work carried out by the glow plugs.
Release the key as soon as the engine starts. IMPORTANT With cold engine, the accelerator pedal shall
be completely released while turning the ignition key to
AV V.
If the engine does not start at the first attempt, turn the
ignition key to STOP again before repeating the procedure.
If instrument panel
Ywarning light remains lit when the
ignition key is turned to MAR, turn the key to STOP and
then back to MAR; if the warning light remains lit, try the
other keys provided with the vehicle. Contact a Lancia Deal-
ership if you still cannot start the engine.
The mwarning light will flash for 60 sec-
onds after starting or during prolonged
cranking to indicate a fault with the glow
plug pre-heating system. Use the car normally if the
engine starts and go to a Lancia Dealership as soon
as possible.

IN AN EMERGENCY199

Punctures caused by foreign bodies can be re-
paired if the damage does not exceed 4 mm
on the tread and on the shoulder of the tyre.
Give the booklet to the personnel who will be
handling the tyre treated with the repair kit.
Punctures on the sides of the tyre cannot be
repaired. Do not use the quick tyre repair kit
if the tyre is damaged as the vehicle has run
on a flat tyre.
If the wheel rim is damaged (the channel is
so deformed as to cause air leakage) it can-
not be repaired. Do not remove foreign bod-
ies (screws or nails) from the tyre.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION
The sealant of the quick tyre repair kit is effective with
external temperatures between –20°C and +50°C.
The sealant has an expiry date.
Never operate the compressor for longer than
20 consecutive minutes. Risk of overheating.
The quick tyre repair kit is not suitable for a
definitive repair. Tyres may only be repaired tem-
porarily.

RUBBER HOSES
As far as the brake system and fuel supply system rub-
ber hoses are concerned, follow the “Scheduled Servic-
ing Plan” in this chapter carefully.
Ozone, high temperatures and prolonged lack of fluid in
the system may cause hardening and cracking of the hoses,
with possible leaks. Careful checking is therefore neces-
sary.
WINDSCREEN/
REAR WINDOW WIPER
BLADES
Periodically clean the rubber part using special products;
TUTELA PROFESSIONAL SC35 is recommended.
Replace the blades if the rubber edge is deformed or worn.
In any case, it is advisable to replace them approximate-
ly once a year.
A few simple precautions can reduce the possibility of
damage to the blades:
❍make sure that the rubber part is not frozen to the
windscreen in case of sub-zero temperatures. Use a de-
icing product to release it if required;
❍ remove any snow from the glass: in addition to pro-
tecting the blades, this prevents effort from the motor
and overheating;
❍ do not operate the windscreen and the rear window
wipers on dry glass.
Driving with worn windscreen wiper blades
is a serious hazard, because visibility is re-
duced in bad weather conditions.
