EMISSION-REDUCING DEVICES (Multijet engines)
Oxidising catalytic converter
It is used to convert the polluting substances in the exhaust gases (carbon oxide, unburnt hydrocarbons and
particulate) into harmless substances by reducing the smoke opacity index and the typical smell of exhaust gases
produced by diesel engines.
The catalyst converter comprises a stainless steel metal enclosure which contains a ceramic honey-comb body on which
the noble metal, having a catalyst function, is installed.
Exhaust gas recirculation system (E.G.R.)
It is used to recirculate, i.e. recycle, a portion of the exhaust gases in percentage terms that change according to the
engine operating conditions.
When necessary, it is used to check the emissions of nitrogen oxides.

IGNITION DEVICE
The key can be turned to 3 different
positions:
❒STOP: engine off, key extractable,
steering locked. Some electrical
devices (e.g. sound system, power
windows, etc.) work regularly.
❒MAR: driving position. All electri-
cal devices work regularly.
❒AV V: engine starting (unstable po-
sition).
The ignition switch is fitted with an
electronic safety system that turns the
ignition key back to position STOPif
the engine will not start, before re-
peating the starting operation.
Under no circumstances
should aftermarket works
be carried out, because they may
cause tampering with the driving
system or steering column (e.g. in-
stallation of anti-theft device),
which may lead to reduced system
performances and loss of the war-
ranty as well as safety-specific
problems and non-compliance
with the car type-approval.
WARNING
fig. 21L0D0021m
If the ignition system is
tampered with (e.g. after
an attempted theft), address a
Lancia Dealership to have the sys-
tem checked before starting off.
WARNING
Always remove the key
from the car when leaving
it in order to prevent accidental en-
gagement of the controls. Remem-
ber to engage the handbrake. En-
gage first gear if the car is parked
uphill or reverse if the car is
parked downhill. Never leave chil-
dren unattended in the car.
WARNING
STEERING COLUMN LOCK
Engagement
When the key is in position STOP, re-
move the key and turn the steering
wheel until it is locked.
Disengagement
Rock the steering wheel slightly as you
turn the ignition key to MAR.
Never extract the key while
the car is moving. The
steering wheel would be locked as
soon as the steering wheel is turned.
This also applies to cases in which
the car is towed.

formation for car driving according to
the settings made. ENGINE COOLANT
TEMPERATURE GAUGE fig. 25
Warning light Aturns on to indicate
that the temperature of the engine
coolant has remarkably increased. In
this case, stop the engine and go to a
Lancia Dealership. This shows the tem-
perature of the engine coolant fluid and
starts working when the fluid temper-
ature exceeds approx. 50°C. In regular
operating conditions the needle moves
to the different positions allowed inside
the gauge according to the car operat-
ing conditions and management of the
engine cooling system.
IMPORTANT If the needle gets posi-
tioned at the beginning of the scale
(temperature low) and the warning
lightAis on, a failure has occurred in
the system. If this is the case, go to a
Lancia Dealership to have the system
checked.
If the needle indicating the
engine coolant temperature
reaches the red area, stop
the engine immediately and
contact a Lancia Dealership.

The system also has a diagnostic con-
nector that can be interfaced with ap-
propriate tools, which makes it possi-
ble to read the error codes stored in
the control unit, together with a series
of specific parameters for engine op-
eration and diagnosis. This check can
also be carried out by the traffic po-
lice.
IMPORTANT After eliminating the
problem, to check the system com-
pletely, Lancia Dealerships are obliged
to run a bench test and, if necessary,
road tests which may also call for a
long journey.Sound system installation
The sound system shall be installed in
the space occupied by the central odd-
ment compartment, here you will find
the preset cables. To remove the odd-
ment compartment press the retain-
ing devices in the points shown in the

SAFETY
DEVICES
Always drive keeping your
hands on the steering
wheel so that the airbag can inflate
without obstacles if it is deployed.
Do not drive with your body bent
forward. Keep your back straight
against the backrest. If the car is
stolen or an attempt is made to
steal it, or if the car has been sub-
jected to illegal attacks or flooding,
have the airbag system checked by
a Lancia Dealership.
WARNING
Do not travel carrying ob-
jects on your lap or oppo-
site the chest and keeping a pipe,
pencils, etc. between your lips in
order to avoid serious injuries due
to deployment of the airbag after a
collision.
WARNING
The front airbag is de-
ployed in the event of col-
lisions having a more severe nature
than those required to activate the
pretensioners. For collisions in
the range between the two activa-
tion thresholds, pretensioner acti-
vation is normal.
WARNING
Turning the ignition key to
MAR, the warning light “
(airbag on passenger’s side en-
abled) goes on and flashes for a
few seconds, thus reminding the
passenger that the airbag on
his/her side will deploy in the
event of a collision. After this time,
the light goes off.
WARNING
Do not wash the car seats
with water or pressurised
steam (both by hand or at auto-
matic washing stations).
WARNING
The airbag does not re-
place the safety belts, it
increases their effectiveness. Fur-
thermore, since front airbags are
not deployed after low speed colli-
sions, side collisions, rear-end
shunts or roll-overs, the passen-
gers are only protected by the seat
belts which must be fastened at all
times.
WARNING
Do not hook rigid objects
to cloth hangers and to the
support handles.
WARNING
If the ignition key is in
place and in the MAR po-
sition, the airbags are deployed
even with the engine off in the event
of a car crash against another
moving vehicle. For this reason,
children must never sit on the front
seat, even if the car is not moving.
On the other hand, whenever the
key is positioned on STOP, the
safety devices (airbags or preten-
sioners) do not deploy after a col-
lision. In this case non-deployment
of these devices does not indicate a
system malfunction.

CONTAINING
RUNNING COSTS
Here are some suggestions which may
help you to keep the running costs of
your car down and lower the amount
of toxic emissions released into the at-
mosphere.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
Car maintenance
Have checks and adjustments carried
out in accordance with the “Service
schedule”.
Tyres
Check tyre pressure regularly at least
once every four weeks: excessively low
pressure will increase consumption
because rolling resistance will be
higher.
Unnecessary loads
Do not travel with an overloaded
boot. The weight of the car (especially
when driving in town) and its trim
greatly affect consumption and sta-
bility.Roof rack/ski rack
Remove the roof rack or the ski rack
from the roof after use. These acces-
sories decrease aerodynamic penetra-
tion of the car and have a negative ef-
fect on consumption. It is better to use
a trailer to transport particularly
bulky objects.
Electric devices
Use electric devices only for the
amount of time needed. Rear heated
window, additional headlights, wind-
screen wipers and heater fan need a
considerable amount of energy, there-
fore increasing the requirement of
current increases fuel consumption
(up to +25% in the urban cycle).
Climate control
The climate control system requires
higher fuel consumption (up to +20%
in average): use the air vents when the
external temperature allows to.
Spoilers
The use of non-certified aerodynamic
items may adversely affect air drag
and consumption levels.DRIVING STYLE
Starting
Do not warm the engine up with the
car standing: the engine warms up
very slowly in these conditions, in-
creasing consumption and emissions.
It is advisable to start off immediately
and slowly keeping the engine speed
down: the engine will warm up much
faster this way.
Unnecessary actions
Avoid revving up when starting at
traffic lights or before stopping the
engine. The latter action, like dou-
bling the clutch, is unnecessary and
causes increase of consumption and
pollution.
Gear selection
Use a higher gear as soon as traffic
and road conditions allow. Using a
low gear for faster acceleration will in-
crease consumption.
In the same way improper use of a
high gear increases consumption,
emissions an engine wear.

EXTENDED
CAR INACTIVITY
If the car is to be left inactive for
longer than a month, the following
precautions should be noted:
❒park the car in covered, dry and
if possible well-ventilated premises;
❒engage a gear;
❒check that the handbrake is not
engaged;
❒disconnect the negative battery
terminal and check battery charge.
Repeat this check once every three
months during storage. Recharge
if the optical indicator shows a
dark colour without the central
green area;❒clean ad protect the painted parts
using protection waxes;
❒clean and protect the shiny metal
parts using special compounds
readily available;
❒sprinkle talcum powder on the
rubber windscreen and rear win-
dow wiper blades and lift them off
the glass;
❒slightly open the windows;
❒cover the car with a fabric or per-
forated plastic sheet. Do not use
compact plastic sheets that pre-
vent moisture on the car surface
from evaporating;❒inflate the tyres at a pressure of
+0.5 bar with respect to the nor-
mally specified pressure and check
it regularly;
❒if you don’t disconnect the battery
from the electric system, check its
charge every month and recharge
it if the optical indicator shows a
dark colour without the central
green area;
❒do not drain the engine cooling
system.

LIGHTS AND
MESSAGES
GENERAL WARNINGS
Lighting of a warning light is associated
to a specific message and/or buzzer
when applicable. These indications are
brief and precautionary and as such
must not be considered as exhaustive
and/or alternative to the information
contained in the Owner’s Handbook,
which you are recommended to read
carefully in all cases. Always refer to
the information in this chapter in
the event of a failure indication.
IMPORTANT Failure indications on
the display fall into either of two cat-
egories:seriousfailure and less se-
riousfailure.
Seriousfailures indicate a “cycle” of
warning messages that stay on until
the cause of the failure is eliminated.
Less seriousfailures are indicated by
a limited warning “cycle”.
PressMODEto stop the warning cy-
cle in both cases. The warning light
on the instrument panel will stay on
until the cause of the failure is elimi-
nated.LOW BRAKE FLUID
LEVEL (red)
HANDBRAKE ON (red)
When the ignition key is moved to
MARthe warning light turns on and
should go off after a few seconds.
Low brake fluid level
The warning light turns on when the
level of the brake fluid in the reservoir
falls below the minimum level due to
possible leaks in the circuit.
The display will show the dedicated
message.
x
Handbrake on
The warning light turns on when the
handbrake is on.
On certain versions, if the car is mov-
ing the buzzer also triggers.
IMPORTANT If the warning light
turns on when travelling, check that
the handbrake is not engaged.
AIRBAG FAILURE (red)
When the ignition key is
moved to MAR, the warn-
ing light turns on and should
go off after a few seconds.
The warning light stays on steady if
there is a failure in the airbag system.
The display will show the dedicated
message.
¬
If the warning light x
turns on when the car is
travelling (together with the mes-
sage on the display on certain ver-
sions) stop the engine immediately
and contact a Lancia Dealership.

WARNING
LIGHTS AND
MESSAGES
If when turning the key to
MAR the warning light ¬does not turn on or stays on during
car travel (together with the mes-
sage on the multifunctional dis-
play, where provided), a failure
may have occurred in the restraint
systems. In this case the airbags or
pretensioners may not be deployed
after an impact or, in a minor
number of cases, they may be de-
ployed accidentally. Contact Lan-
cia Dealership immediately to
have the system checked immedi-
ately.
The failure of the warning
light
¬is indicated by the
warning light flashing longer than
the expected 4 seconds“, thus sig-
nalling that the front passenger
airbag is deactivated. In addition,
the airbag system automatically
disables the airbag on the passen-
ger’s side (both front and side
airbags, where provided). In this
case, the warning light
¬does
not necessarily indicate a failure
in the restraining systems. Contact
Lancia Dealership immediately to
have the system checked.
WARNING
WARNING
HOT ENGINE COOLANT
(red)
When the ignition key is
moved to MAR, the warning
light turns on and should go off after
a few seconds.
The warning light turns on when the
engine is overheated.
If the warning light comes on, proceed
as follows:
❒during normal travel: stop the
car, stop the engine and check that
the water level in the vessel is not
under the MINline. If this is the
case, wait for a few minutes for the
engine to cool down. Then, slowly
and carefully open the cap, top-up
with coolant and check that the
level is between the MINandMAX
reference lines on the vessel. Also
check for leakages. Should the
warning light turn on again at the
next start-up, contact Lancia Deal-
ership.
u
❒If the vehicle is used under severe
conditions(e.g. towing of trailers
uphill or fully loaded vehicle): slow
down and stop the car if the warn-
ing light stays on. Stop for 2 or 3
minutes with the engine running
and slightly accelerated to favour
better coolant circulation. Then stop
the engine. Check correct fluid level
as described above.
IMPORTANT Under severe use of the
car, keep the engine on and slightly
accelerated for a few minutes before
switching it off.
The display will show the dedicated
message.
LOW BATTERY
CHARGE (red)
When the ignition key is
moved to MAR, the warning
light turns on and should go out as
soon as the engine is started (with the
engine running at idle speed a brief
delay in going out is allowed). If the
warning light stays on, immediately
contact Lancia Dealership.
