12-1-32 DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
When the engine temperature is below 74° C, the thermostat in the full-flow filter housing is closed and a proportion
of the oil flow to the main oil gallery is diverted to the oil cooler to supply an oil feed to the turbocharger bearings. Oil
passes through the oil cooler to the front gallery in the oil cooler housing where there is a tapping to connect the feed
pipe to the turbocharger. Oil used by the turbocharger bearings is returned to the sump through an oil drain pipe which
connects to a port in the LH side of the cylinder block.
The remainder of the oil flow leaving the full-flow filter outlet is passed into the cylinder block via a port at the rear of
oil cooler rear gallery.
When the oil temperature rises above 74
° C the thermostat in the full-flow filter adaptor housing begins to open to
allow a proportion of the oil from the full-flow filter to pass through the oil cooler before it reaches the main oil gallery
in the cylinder block. In this instance, oil supply to the turbocharger bearings is fed directly from the full-flow filter
without first passing through the oil cooler. Between 74
° C and 88° C the thermostat valve plunger opens by about
9mm to allow proportionally more oil to flow through the oil cooler before being passed to the cylinder block main oil
delivery gallery. Above 88
°C the thermostat valve continues to open by about 1mm for every 10° C increase in
temperature until the valve is fully open, when all the oil flow to the cylinder block is forced to pass to the cylinder block
via the oil cooler.
An oil pressure switch is located in a port in the rear gallery of the oil cooler housing to sense the oil pressure level
before flow enters the main oil gallery in the engine block. A warning lamp in the instrument cluster is switched on if
the oil pressure is detected as being too low.

+ INSTRUMENTS, DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION, Description.
Drillings from the cylinder block main oil gallery direct oil to the crankshaft main bearings and cross drillings in the
crankshaft direct oil to the big-end bearings. An additional five drillings in the cylinder block supply oil at reduced
pressure to the oil squirt jets for piston cooling and gudgeon pin lubrication.
Oil supply from the cylinder block is then passed to the cylinder head galleries through a non-return valve which is
included as an integral item in the lower face of the cylinder head.

18-1-6 DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
Description
General
An engine control module (ECM) controls the five-cylinder direct injection diesel engine, and works on the drive by
wire principle. This means there is no throttle cable, the ECM controls the drivers needs via a signal from the Throttle
Position (TP) sensor on the throttle pedal.
The ECM is a full authoritative diesel specific microprocessor that also incorporates features for cruise control and air
conditioning control. In addition, the ECM supplies output control for the exhaust gas recirculation and turbocharger
boost pressure. The ECM has a self-diagnostic function, which is able to provide backup strategies for most sensor
failures.
The ECM processes information from the following input sources:
lMass air flow sensor.
lAmbient air pressure sensor.
lManifold absolute pressure/inlet air temperature sensor.
lEngine coolant temperature sensor.
lCrankshaft speed and position sensor.
lThrottle position sensor.
lFuel temperature sensor.
lAir conditioning request.
lAir conditioning fan request.
lBrake pedal switch.
lClutch switch.
lCruise control master switch.
lCruise control SET+ switch.
lCruise control RES switch.
lHigh/low ratio switch.
The input from the sensors constantly updates the ECM with the current operating condition of the engine. Once the
ECM has compared current information with stored information within its memory, it can make any adjustment it
requires to the operation of the engine via the following:
lAir conditioning clutch relay.
lAir conditioning cooling fan relay.
lElectronic vacuum regulator solenoid.
lMalfunction indicator lamp.
lFuel pump relay.
lGlow plug warning lamp.
lGlow plugs.
lFuel injectors.
lMain relay.
lTurbocharger wastegate modulator.

The ECM interfaces with the following:
lElectronic Automatic Transmission (EAT).
lSelf Levelling and Anti-lock Brakes System (SLABS).

Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL)
The MIL is located in the instrument cluster. It illuminates to alert the driver to system malfunctions. During ignition a
self-test function of the lamp is carried out. The lamp will illuminate for 3 seconds then extinguish if no faults exist. If
a fault is present the lamp will be extinguished for 1 second before illuminating.
Input/Output
The MIL is supplied with battery voltage from the instrument cluster. When the ECM detects a fault, it provides an
earth path to illuminate the MIL. The earth path is via pin 6 of ECM connector C0658.

Glow plug warning lamp
The glow plug warning lamp is located in the instrument cluster. It illuminates to alert the driver that the glow plugs
are being heated prior to the engine being started. The length of time that the lamp illuminates and the glow plugs
are operating prior to cranking is the pre-heat period, which is subject to battery voltage and ECT sensor signal
controlled by the ECM.
Input/Output
The instrument cluster supplies battery voltage to the glow plug warning lamp. The ECM provides an earth path to
illuminate the lamp. The earth path is via pin 30 of ECM connector C0658.
Glow plugs
The 4 glow plugs are located in the engine block on the inlet side, in cylinder 1 to 4. Cylinder 5 has no glow plug. The
glow plugs are a vital part of the engine starting strategy.

The ECM controls the following outputs:

The ECM also interfaces with the following:

Engine Control Module (ECM)
The engine control module (ECM) is located on the RH side A post below the face panel inside the vehicle. It has a
cast aluminium case and is mounted on a bracket. The ECM has 5 independent connectors totalling 134 pins.
The ECM is available in 4 variants:
lNAS.
lNAS low emission vehicles.
lUK/ Europe/ Japan/ Australia.
lROW/ Gulf.
The ECM uses a 'flash' electronic erasable programmable read only memory (EEPROM). This enables the ECM to
be externally configured, to ensure that the ECM can be updated with any new information, this also allows the ECM
to be configured with market specific data. TestBook must be used to configure replacement ECM's. The ECM can
be reconfigured up to 16 times to meet changing specifications and legislation.
The ECM memorises the positions of the crankshaft and the camshaft when the engine has stopped via the CKP and
CMP sensors. This allows immediate sequential fuel injection and ignition timing during cranking. This information is
lost if battery voltage is too low (i.e. flat battery). So the facility will be disabled for the first engine start.

18-2-16 DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
For NAS vehicles with secondary air injection, the signal from the ECT sensor is monitored at engine start, to
determine whether the conditions are cold enough to warrant secondary air injection to be employed. The ECT sensor
is then monitored to switch off the secondary air injection when the required engine coolant temperature has been
attained.

+ EMISSION CONTROL - V8, DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION, Secondary air injection system.
The ECT works as a Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) sensor. As temperature rises, the resistance in the
sensor decreases, as temperature decreases, the resistance in the sensor increases. The ECT sensor forms part of
a voltage divider chain with a pull up resistor within the ECM. Consequently as the ECT sensor resistance changes,
the analogue voltage at the input signal from the ECT sensor to the ECM will be adjusted which corresponds to the
temperature of the engine coolant. With this information, the ECM can implement the correct strategies for cold start,
warm up etc. The ECM supplies the instrument cluster with a pulse width modulated (PWM) coolant temperature
signal to drive the temperature gauge.
Input/Output
The electrical input and output to and from the ECT sensor are reference voltage and sensor earth. The ECM provides
the ECT sensor with a 5 volt reference via pin 22 of connector C0636 of the ECM, and earth via pin 21 of connector
C0636 of the ECM. The normal operating parameters of the ECT sensor are as follows
Should the sensor fail the ECM has a back up strategy that uses a changing default value during warm up based on
the signal from the inlet air temperature sensor. When the strategy default value reaches 60
°C (140 °F), the ECM
implements a fixed default value of 85
°C (185 °F). It will also illuminate the MIL.

The ECT sensor can fail the following ways or supply incorrect signal:
lSensor open circuit.
lShort circuit to vehicle supply.
lShort circuit to earth.
lIncorrect mechanical fitting.
lSignal fixed above 40
°C (140 °F) will not be detected.
lSignal fixed below 40
°C (140 °F) will be detected.
In the event of an ECT sensor signal failure any of the following symptoms may be observed:
lDifficult cold start.
lDifficult hot start.
lDriveability concern.
lMIL illuminated.
lInstrument cluster temperature warning lamp illuminated.
lTemperature gauge reads excessively hot.
lTemperature gauge reads excessively cold.
lCooling fan will not run.
There are three types of ECT sensor diagnostic checks:
lThe ECT sensor signal is within limits, but is inaccurate – the engine has to be running and the signal indicates
a coolant temperature below 40
°C (104°F). The signal differs too much from the coolant temperature model for
longer than 2.53 seconds.
lThe ECT sensor signal is greater than the maximum threshold value – the ECM has to be powered up to perform
the diagnostic, but the engine does not need to be running.
lThe ECT sensor signal is less than the minimum threshold value – the ECM has to be powered up to perform
the diagnostic, but the engine does not need to be running.
