■When the shift contro l system malfunctions
The power switch will not be able to be turn ed off. In such a case, the switch can be
turned off after applying the parking brake.
Have the vehicle inspected by any authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or another duly
qualified and equipped professional immediately.

■When starting the hybrid system
Always start the hybrid system while sitting in the driver’s seat. Do not depress the
accelerator pedal while starting the hybrid system under any circumstances.
Doing so may cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
■Stopping the hybrid system in an emergency
If you want to stop the hybrid system in an emergency while driving the vehicle, press
and hold the power switch for more than 2 se conds, or press it briefly 3 times or more
in succession. ( →P. 5 0 9 )
However, do not touch the power switch while driving except in an emergency. Turning
the hybrid system off while driving will not cause loss of steering or braking control,
however, power assist to the steering will be lost. This will make it more difficult to steer
smoothly, so you should pull over and stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.
NOTICE
■To prevent 12-volt battery discharge
●Do not leave the power switch in ACCESSORY or ON mode for long periods of
time without the hybrid system on.
●If the hybrid system is off, but the indicator on the power switch is illuminated, this indi-
cates that the power switch is still turned on. When exiting the vehicle, always check
that the power switch is off.
■When starting the hybrid system
If the hybrid system becomes difficult to start, have your vehicle checked by any autho-
rized Lexus dealer or repairer, or anothe r duly qualified and equipped professional
immediately.
■Symptoms indicating a malfunction with the power switch
If the power switch seems to be operating somewhat differently than usual, such as the
switch sticking slightly, there may be a malfunction. Contact any authorized Lexus
dealer or repairer, or another duly qualif ied and equipped professional immediately.

*: For good fuel economy and noise reduction, the D position should usually be used.

■When shifting the shift position to P
Fully stop the vehicle and set the
parking brake, and then press the P
position switch.
When the shift position is changed to
P, the switch indicator comes on.
Check that the P position is illumi-
nated on the shift position indicator.
■Shifting the shift position from P to other positions
●While depressing the brake pedal firmly, operate the shift lever. If the shift
lever is operated without depressing the brake pedal, the buzzer will sound
and the shifting operation will be disabled.
●When selecting the shift position, make sure that the shift position has been
changed to the desired position by ch ecking the shift position indicator
provided on the instrument cluster.
●The shift position cannot be changed from P to B directly.

2384-5. Using the driving support systems
CT200h_OM_OM76135E_(EE)
Driving assist systems
◆ABS (Anti-lock Brake System)
Helps to prevent wheel lock when the brakes are applied suddenly, or if the
brakes are applied while driving on a slippery road surface
◆Brake assist
Generates an increased level of braking force after the brake pedal is
depressed when the system detects a panic stop situation
◆VSC (Vehicle Stability Control)
Helps the driver to control skidding when swerving suddenly or turning on
slippery road surfaces
◆TRC (Traction Control)
Helps to maintain drive power and pr event the drive wheels from spinning
when starting the vehicle or accelerating on slippery roads
◆EPS (Electric Power Steering)
Employs an electric motor to reduce the amount of effort needed to turn the
steering wheel
◆VSC + (Vehicle Stability Control +)
Provides cooperative control of the ABS, TRC, VSC and EPS.
Helps to maintain directional stability when swerving on slippery road sur-
faces by controlling steering performance.
◆Hill-start assist control
→ P. 2 4 2
To help enhance driving safety and performance, the following systems oper-
ate automatically in response to various driving situations. Be aware, however,
that these systems are supplementary and should not be relied upon too
heavily when operating the vehicle.

■When the “TRC OFF” indicator comes on even if the TRC OFF switch has not been
pressed
TRC cannot be operated. Contact any authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or another
duly qualified and equipped professional.
■Sounds and vibrations caused by the ABS, brake assist, VSC and TRC
●A sound may be heard from the engine compartment when the hybrid system is
started, just after the vehicle begins to move, if the brake pedal is depressed forcefully
or repeatedly, or 1-2 minutes after the hybrid system is stopped. This sound does not
indicate that a malfunction has occurred in any of these systems.
●Any of the following conditions may occu r when the above systems are operating.
None of these indicates that a malfunction has occurred.
• Vibrations may be felt through the vehicle body and steering.
• A motor sound may be heard after the vehicle comes to a stop.
• The brake pedal may pulsate slig htly after the ABS is activated.
• The brake pedal may move down s lightly after the ABS is activated.
■EPS operation sound
When the steering wheel is operated, a motor sound (whirring sound) may be heard.
This does not indicate a malfunction.
■Reduced effectiveness of the EPS system
The effectiveness of the EPS system is reduced to prevent the system from overheating
when there is frequent steering input over an extended period of time. The steering
wheel may feel heavy as a result. Should this occur, refrain from excessive steering input
or stop the vehicle and turn the hybrid system off. The EPS system should return to nor-
mal within 10 minutes.
■Automatic reactivation of TRC system
After turning the TRC system off, the system will be automatically re-enabled in the fol-
lowing situations:
●When the power switch is turned off
●The TRC will turn on when vehicle speed increases
■Operating conditions of emergency brake signal
When the following three conditions are me t, the emergency brake signal will operate:
●The emergency flashers are off.
●Actual vehicle speed is over 55 km/h (35 mph).
●The brake pedal is depressed in a manner that cause the system to judge from the vehi-
cle deceleration that this is a sudden braking operation.
■Automatic system cancelation of emergency brake signal
The emergency brake signal will turn off in any of the following situations:
●The emergency flashers are turned on.
●The brake pedal is released.
●The system judges from the vehicle deceleration that is not a sudden braking operation.

Hill-start assist control
To engage hill-start assist control, fur-
ther depress the brake pedal when the
vehicle is stopped completely.
A buzzer will sound once to indicate the
system is activated. The slip indicator
will also start flashing.
■Hill-start assist control operating conditions
●The system operates in the following situations:
• The shift position is in a position other than P.
• The parking brake is not applied.
• The accelerator pedal is not depressed.
●Hill-start assist control cannot be operated wh ile the slip indicator light is illuminated.
■Hill-start assist control
●While hill-start assist control is operating, the brakes rema in automatically applied after
the driver releases the brake pedal. The stop lights and the high mounted stoplight turn
on.
●Hill-start assist control operates for about 2 seconds after the brake pedal is released.
●If the slip indicator does not flash and the buzzer does not sound when the brake pedal
is further depressed, slightly reduce the pressure on the brake pedal (do not allow the
vehicle to roll backward) and then firmly depr ess it again. If the system still does not
operate, check if the operating conditions explained above have been met.
■Hill-start assist control buzzer
●When hill-start assist control is activated, the buzzer will sound once.
●In the following situations, hill-start assist control will be canceled and the buzzer will
sound twice.
• No attempt is made to drive the vehicle wi thin approximately 2 seconds of releasing
the brake pedal.
• Push the P position switch.
• The parking brake is applied.
• The brake pedal is depressed again.
• The brake pedal has been depressed for more than approximately 3 minutes.
Assists with starting off and temporarily maintains braking power even if the
foot is removed from the brake pedal when starting off on an incline or a slip-
pery slope.
