guidelines for inspections ar e listed
belo w. Please r efer to the “Mainte-
nance” section of the O wner’s Manual
for a det ailed description of inspec-
tion pr ocedur es.
When R efueling
When r efueling, per form these
inspections:
•Check engine oil le vel using
the dipstick
• Visually check engine coolant
le vel on the see-thr ough
r eser voir (under co ver)
• Visually check br ake fluid le vel
on the see-thr ough reservoir
• Visually check po wer steering
fluid le vel on the see-thr ough
r eser voir (under co ver)
• Visually check condition of
batter y (under co ver)
• Check le vel of windshield
w asher fluid E
ver y 30 D ays
A t least once e ver y 30 day s, perform
these inspections:
•Check tir e pressur e
• Check tir es for damage
and w ear
When Cleaning the Interior •Remo ve dir t and dust with a
v acuum cleaner . Wipe dir ty sur-
faces with a sof t cloth dampened
with w arm water.
• When cleaning carpet or cloth
interior , remo ve dir t and dust
with a v acuum cleaner . Apply
a foaming-t ype carpet cleaner
with a sponge or brush, allo wing
cleaner to w ork for a few min-
u tes to loosen dir t. Continue b y
rubbing carpet or cloth interior
in a cir cular motion. W ipe off any
e xces s cleaner with a clean cloth.
If any dir t remains, r epeat process.
Best r esults ar e obtained b y
k eeping carpet and cloth interior
as dr y as pos sible.
• When cleaning leather interior ,
r emo ve dir t and dust with a
v acuum cleaner . Using a sponge,

ake P ads, Caliper s and Rotor s
Check br ake pads and r otors for
e xces sive w ear; check br ake r otor s
for runou t. Check br ake caliper s for
fluid leak age. Check the parking
br ak e linings (shoes) and drums for
scoring, burning, fluid leak age, broken
par ts and e xces sive w ear. Some mod-
els ar e equipped with dir ectional
r otor s. When ser vicing these r otors,
r einst all at same location. A qualified
technician should per form these
oper ations. See inside fr ont cover
for additional br ake information.
Differ ential Oil
Inspect each dif ferential component
for signs of leak age. If you disco ver
any leak age, have it r epair ed immedi-
ately b y a qualified technician. R efer
to y ou O wner’s Manual for fluid speci-
fications.
Driv e Belt
Inspect for cr acks, exces sive w ear
and oilines s. Check the belt tension
and adjust if neces sary. R eplace the
belt if it is damaged. Engine Air Filter
Check for damage, e
xces sive w ear
and oilines s. Replace if neces sary.
Engine Coolant
When inspecting, visually check
the engine coolant le vel on the see-
thr ough r eservoir . A dd coolant as
neces sary. When r eplacing, dr ain
and flush the cooling s ystem and r efill
with coolant. Alw ays use Genuine
T o yot a Super L ong-Life C oolant or
similar high-qualit y non-silicate, non-
amine, non-bor ate ethylene-gly col
coolant with long-life hybrid or ganic
acid technology (i. e., a combination
of lo w phosphates and or ganic acids).
A qualified technician should per -
form these oper ations.
Note: Initial r eplacement is at 120
months/ 100 ,000 miles. R eplace
e ver y 60 months/ 50,000 miles

68 Engine Oil and Oil Filter
R
eplace the oil filter and dr ain and
r efill the engine oil at specified inter -
v als. F or recommended oil gr ade
and viscosit y, r efer to y our Owner’s
Manual. Some models ar e equipped
with a r eplaceable oil-filter element
and oil-filter cap O-ring; r eplace both
at each oil change. F or instructions on
ho w to r eset the r eminder light, r efer
to y our O wner’s Manual.
Engine V alve Clear ance
(IS F, S C)
Inspect for e xces sive lif ter noise and
engine vibr ation and adjust if neces-
sar y. (All other models ar e equipped
with hy draulic v alve lash adjuster s that
r equir e no periodic clear ance inspec-
tion or adjustment.)
Exhaust Pipes and Mountings
V isually inspect the e xhaust pipes,
muf fler and hanger s for cracks,
deterior ation and damage. St art
the engine and listen car efully for
any e xhaust leak age. Tighten connec-
tions and r eplace par ts as neces sary.
F uel Lines and Connections, F uel
T ank B and and F uel Tank V apor
V ent S ystem Hoses
V isually inspect for corr osion, dam-
age, cr acks, and loose or leaking
connections. T ighten connections
and r eplace par ts as neces sary. F
uel T ank Cap Gask et
V isually inspect for cr acks, deterio-
r ation and damage and r eplace if
neces sary.
Nuts and Bolts on Chas sis
Check that tightnes s of the seat-
mounting bolts and fr ont/rear suspen-
sion-member r etaining bolts matches
tor que measur ements specified in the
R epair Manual.
P ow er S teering Fluid
When inspecting, visually check the
po wer steering fluid le vel on the see-
thr ough r eservoir . A dd fluid as neces-
sar y. F or fluid specifications, r efer to
y our O wner's Manual.
R ack and Pinion As sembly
Inspect the r ack and pinion as sembly
for signs of leak age, damage and
loose electrical connections. T ighten
connections and if y ou discover any
leak age or damage, ha ve it r epair ed
immediately b y a qualified technician.
R oad T est
While driving the v ehicle, check for
pr oper oper ation of engine, tr ansmis-
sion, br akes and steering. Also check
for abnormal noise or vibr ation from

Spark Plugs
R
eplace at specified inter val. A quali-
fied technician should per form this
oper ation. T o ensur e optimum engine
per formance on ES 3 50, replace only
with D enso FK20HR11 plugs or
equiv alent.
S teering Link age and Boo ts
W ith the v ehicle stopped, check for
e xces sive fr eeplay in the steering
wheel. Inspect the link age for bending
and damage and the dust boots for
deterior ation, cracks and damage.
R eplace any damaged par ts. A quali-
fied technician should per form these
oper ations.
T iming Belt (S C)
R eplace e ver y 90 ,000 miles or
1 08 months. A qualified technician
should per form this oper ation.
T iming Chain (ES, G S, IS, LS)
The ES, G S, IS and LS ar e equipped
with a timing chain that r equires no
periodic inspection.
T ir e R otation
T ir es should be r otated accor ding
to the instructions in y our Owner’s
Manual. When r otating tir es, check
pr es sur e and check for damage and
une ven w ear. If the spar e is not rotat-
ed, check the condition and pr essur e
of the spar e. T
ir e-P res sur e W arning Sensor s
A tir e-pressur e sensor is mounted on
each full-siz e wheel. These sensor s
do not r equire periodic maintenance.
When a sensor ’s long-life lithium bat-
ter y becomes dischar ged, the battery
should be r eplaced by a qualified
technician follo wing procedures in
L exus ser vice and r epair publications.
T ransfer Case/T ransmis sion
Inspect each tr ansfer case/transmis-
sion component for signs of leak age.
If y ou disco ver any leak age, have it
r epair ed immediately b y a qualified
technician.
Note: The tr ansfer case/transmis sion
and tr ansmis sion fluid ar e a complete-
ly sealed unit. Ther efore, periodic
checks and r eplacement of the tr ans-
mis sion fluid ar e not required, and
ther e is no dipstick on the tr ansmis-
sion. Any r epairs that r equire adding
or r eplacing fluid should be per -
formed b y a qualified technician fol -
lo wing pr ocedures in Lexus ser vice
