Driving
BSM (Blind Spot Monitor)
The Blind Spot Monitor is a system that has 2 functions;
●The Blind Spot Monitor function
Assists the driver in making the decision when changing lanes
●The Rear Cross Traffic Alert function
Assists the driver when backing up
These functions use same sensors.
BSM main switch
Pressing the switch turns the system on or of f. When the switch is set to on, the switch’s
indicator illuminates. Common switch for Blind Spot Monitor function and Rear
Cross Traffic Alert function.
Outside rear view mirror indicator
Blind Spot Monitor function:
When a vehicle is detected in the blind spot, the outside rear view mirror indicator
comes on while the turn signal lever is not operated and the outside rear view mirror
indicator flashes while the turn signal lever is operated.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert function:
When a vehicle approaching from the right or left rear of the vehicle is detected, the
outside rear view mirror indicators flash.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert buzzer (Rear Cross Traffic Alert function only)
When a vehicle approaching from the right or left rear of the vehicle is detected, a
buzzer sounds from behind the rear seat.

■The outside rear view mirror indicators visibility
When under strong sunlight, the outside rear
view mirror indicator may be difficult to
see.
■Rear Cross Traffic Alert buzzer hearing
Rear Cross Traffic Alert function may be difficult to hear over loud noises such as high
audio volume.
■When “Blind Spot Monitor Unavailable” is shown on the multi-information display
Water, snow mud, etc., may be built up in t he vicinity of the sensor area of bumper.
(  P. 249) Removing the water, snow, mud, et c., from the vicinity of the sensor area
bumper should return it to normal. Also, the sensor may not function normally when
used in extremely hot or cold weather.
■When “Blind Spot Monitor System Malfunction Visit Your Dealer” is shown on the
multi-information display
There may be a sensor malfunction or voltag e abnormality. Have the vehicle inspected at
a Lexus dealer.

■Handling the radar sensor
One Blind Spot Monitor sensor is installed inside the left and right side of the vehicle
rear bumper respectively. Observe the following to ensure the Blind Spot Monitor sys-
tem can function correctly.
●Do not subject the sensor or surrounding ar ea on the bumper to a strong impact. If
the sensor moves even slightly off position, the system may malfunction and vehicles
that enter the detection area may not be detected. If the sensor or surrounding area is
subject to a strong impact, always have the area inspected by your Lexus dealer.
●Do not disassemble the sensor.
●Do not attach accessories or stickers to the sensor or surrounding area on the
bumper.
●Do not modify the sensor or su rrounding area on the bumper.
●Do not paint the rear bumper any color other than an official Lexus color.
●Keep the sensor and its surrounding area on
the bumper clean at all times.

The Blind Spot Monitor function uses radar sensors to detect vehicles that are
traveling in an adjacent lane in the area
that is not reflected in the outside rear
view mirror (the blind spot), and advises the driver of the vehicles existence via
the outside rear view mirror indicator.
The areas that vehicles can be detected in are outlined below.
The range of the detection area
extends to:
Approximately 11.5 ft. (3.5 m) from
the side of the vehicle
The first 1.6 ft. (0.5 m) from the side of
the vehicle is not in the detection area
Approximately 9.8 ft. (3 m) from the
rear bumper
Approximately 3.3 ft. (1 m) forward
of the rear bumper

■Cautions regarding the use of the system
The driver is solely responsible for safe driving. Always drive safely, taking care to
observe your surroundings.
The Blind Spot Monitor function is a supp lementary function which alerts the driver
that a vehicle is present in the blind spot. Do not overly rely on the Blind Spot Monitor
function. The function cannot judg e if it is safe to change lanes, therefore over reliance
could cause an accident resulting in death or serious injury.
According to conditions, the system does have operational limitations. Therefore the
driver’s own visual confirmation of safety is necessary.

The Rear Cross Traffic Alert functions when your vehicle is in reverse. It can
detect other vehicles approaching from the right or left rear of the vehicle. It uses
radar sensors to alert the driver of the other vehicle’s existence through flashing
the outside rear view mirror indicators and sounding a buzzer.

■Cautions regarding the use of the system
The driver is solely responsible for safe driving. Always drive safely, taking care to
observe your surroundings.
The Rear Cross Traffic Alert function is only an assist and is not a replacement for care-
ful driving. Driver must be careful when ba cking up, even when using Rear Cross Traffic
Alert function. The driver’s own visual confirmation of behind you and your vehicle is
necessary and be sure there are no pedestrian s, other vehicles etc. before backing up.
Failure to do so could cause death or serious injury.
According to conditions, the system may not function correctly. Therefore the driver’s
own visual confirmation of safety is necessary.

■Conditions under which the Rear Cross Traffi
c Alert function will not detect a vehicle
The Rear Cross Traffic Alert function is no t designed to detect the following types of
vehicles and/or objects.
●Small motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians etc.*
●Vehicles approaching from directly behind
●Guardrails, walls, signs, parked vehi cles and similar stationary objects*
●Vehicles moving away from your vehicle
●Vehicles approaching from the parking spaces next to your vehicle*
●Vehicles backing up in the parking space next to your vehicle*

: Depending on conditions, detection of a vehicle and/or object may occur.
■Conditions under which the Rear Cross Traf fic Alert function may not function cor-
rectly
The Rear Cross Traffic Alert function may not detect vehicles correctly in the following
conditions:
●When ice or mud etc. is attached to the rear bumper
●During bad weather such as heavy rain, fog, snow etc.
●When multiple vehicles approach continuously
●Shallow angle parking
●When a vehicle is approaching at high speed
●When parking on a steep incline, su ch as hills, a dip in the road etc.
●Directly after the BSM main switch is set to on
●Vehicles that the sensors cannot detect
because of obstacles

NOTICE
■To avoid the compass malfunctions
Do not place magnets or any metal objects near the inside rear view mirror.
Doing this may cause the compass sensor to malfunction.
■To ensure normal operation of the compass
●Do not perform circling calibration of the compass in a place where the earth’s mag-
netic field is subject to interference by artificial magnetic fields.
●During calibration, do not operate electric systems (moon roof, power windows, etc.)
as they may interfere with the calibration.

Maintenance and care
■Aluminum wheels
●Remove any dirt immediately by using a neutral detergent. Do not use hard brushes or
abrasive cleaners. Do not use strong or harsh chemical cleaners.
Use the same mild detergent and wax as used on the paint.
●Do not use detergent on the wheels when they are hot, for example after driving for
long distance in the hot weather.
●Wash detergent from the wheels immediately after use.
■Bumpers and side moldings
Do not scrub with abrasive cleaners.

■When washing the vehicle
Do not apply water to the inside of the engine compartment. Doing so may cause the
electrical components, etc., to be damaged or catch fire.
■When cleaning the windshield (vehicles with rain-sensing windshield wipers)
●When the upper part of the windshield where the raindrop sensor is located is
touched by hand
●When a wet rag or similar is held close to the raindrop sensor
●If something bumps against the windshield
●If you directly touch the raindrop sensor body or if something bumps into the raindrop
sensor
■Precautions regarding the exhaust pipes and rear bumper diffusers
Exhaust gases cause the exhaust pipes and rear bumper diffusers to become quite hot.
When washing the vehicle, be careful not to touch the pipes and diffusers until they
have cooled sufficiently, as touching hot exhaust pipes and rear bumper diffusers can
cause burns.
■Precaution regarding the Blind Spot Monitor (if equipped)
If the paint of the rear bumper is chipped or scratched, the system may malfunction. If
this occurs, consult your Lexus dealer.
Set the wiper switch to off.
If the switch is in “AUTO”, the wipers may oper-
ate unexpectedly in the following situations,
and may result in hands being caught or other
serious injuries and cause damage to the wiper
blades.

*: Driver’s and front passenger’s seat belt warning buzzer:The driver’s seat belt warning buzzer sounds to alert the driver that his or her seat belt
is not fastened. Once the engine switch is turned to IGNITION ON mode, the
buzzer sounds for 6 seconds. If the vehicl e reaches a speed of 12 mph (20 km/h), the
buzzer sounds once. If the seat belt is still unfastened afte r 30 seconds, the buzzer will
sound intermittently for 10 seconds. Then, if the seat belt is still unfastened, the buzzer
will sound in a different tone for 20 more seconds.
The front passenger’s seat be lt warning buzzer sounds to alert the front passenger
that his or her seat belt is not fastened. The buzzer sounds once if the vehicle reaches
a speed of 12 mph (20 km/h). If the seat be lt is still unfastened after 30 seconds, the
buzzer will sound intermittently for 10 seconds. Then, if the seat belt is still unfastened,
the buzzer will sound in a different tone for 20 more seconds.
■SRS warning light
This warning light system monitors the airbag sensor assembly, front impact sensors, side
impact sensors (front door), side impact sensors (front), side impact sensors (rear),
driver’s seat position sensor, driver’s seat belt buckle switch, front passenger occupant
classification system (ECU and sensors), “A IR BAG ON” indicator light, “AIR BAG OFF”
indicator light, front passenger’s seat belt bu ckle switch, seat belt pretensioner assem-
blies, airbags, interconnecting wiring and power sources. ( P. 3 6 )
■Front passenger detection sensor, seat belt reminder and warning buzzer
●If luggage is placed on the front passenger seat, the front passenger detection sensor
may cause the warning light to flash and the warning buzzer to sound even if a passen-
ger is not sittin g in the seat.
●If a cushion is placed on th e seat, the sensor may not detect a passenger, and the warn-
ing light may not operate properly.
■Electric power steering system warning light (warning buzzer)
When the battery charge becomes insufficie nt or the voltage temporarily drops, the
electric power steering system warning light may come on and the warning buzzer may
sound.
Tire pressure warning light When the light comes on:
Low tire inflation pressure such as
• Natural causes ( P. 4 7 9 )
•Flat tire ( P. 4 8 5 )
 Adjust the tire inflation pressure to the specified level.
The light will turn off after a fe w minutes. In case the light does
not turn off even if the tire inflation pressure is adjusted, have the
system checked by your Lexus dealer.
When the light comes on after blinking for 1 minute:
Malfunction in the tire pr essure warning system (P. 4 7 9 )
 Have the system checked by your Lexus dealer.
