When driving
Winter driving tips
Carry out the necessary preparations and inspections before driving the
vehicle in winter. Always drive the vehicle in a manner appropriate for the
prevailing weather and roadway conditions.
■ Pre-winter preparations
●Use fluids appropriate to the p revailing outside temperatures.
• Engine oil
• Engine coolant
• Washer fluid
●Inspect the level and specific gravity of battery electrolyte.
●Have the vehicle fitted with four sno w tires or purchase a set of tire
chains for the rear tires.
Ensure that all tires are the same si
ze and brand, and that chains
match the size of the tires.
■ Befor
e driving the vehicle
Perform the following steps acco r
ding to the driving conditions.
●Do not forcibly try to open a window or move a wiper that has fro-
zen. Pour some warm water over the frozen area to melt the ice. 
Wipe away the water immediately to pr
event it from freezing.
●To ensure proper operation of the climate control system fan,
remove any snow that has accumulated on the air inlet vents in front
of the windshield.
●Remove any ice that has accumulated on the vehicle chassis.
●Periodically check for and remove any excess ice or snow that may
accumulate in the wheel well or brakes.

■Cassette tapes that cannot be used
Do not use a cassette tape if it has been damaged
or tangled or if its label is peeling
off. Such tapes may affect playing speed and may also get stuck in the player.
■Cassette player precautions
●Store cassette tapes away from direct sunlight.
●Do not insert anything other than cass ette tapes into the cassette player.
●Do not apply oil to the cassette player.

Failing observe the following precautions may result in CDs being unplayable or
ca
use the player to function abnormally.
• Do not insert anything other than CDs into the CD player.
• Do not apply oil to the CD player.
• Store CDs away from direct sunlight.
• Low-quality and deformed CDs.
• CDs with a transparent or translucent recording area.
• CDs that have had tape, seals or labels attached to them, or that have had the
label peeled off.

■To prevent paint deterioration and corrosion on the body
●Wash the car immediately in the following cases:
• After driving near the sea coast.
• After driving on salted roads.
• If you see coal tar or tree sap on the paint surface
• If you see dead insects or in sect dr
oppings on the paint
• After driving in an area contaminated with soot, oily smoke, mine dust, iron po
wder or chemical substances.
• If the vehicle becomes heavily soiled in dust or mud
• If liquids such as benzene and gasoline are spilled on the paint surface
●If the paint is chipped or scratched, have it repaired immediately
■Wheels
Remove any dirt immediately by using a neutral detergent. Do not use hard brushes
or

abrasive cleaners. Do not use strong or harsh chemical cleaners. Use the same
mild detergent and wax as used on the point.
■Plastic bumpers and side moldings
Do not scrub with abrasive cleaners.
■Windshield and front door glass water-repellent coating
The following precautions can extend the e
ffectiveness of the water-repellent coat-
ing.
• Remove any dirt, etc. from the windshield regularly.
• Do not allow dirt and dust to accumulate on the windows for a long period. Clean the
windows with a soft, damp cloth as soon as possible.
• Do not use wax or glass cleaners that cont
ain abrasires when cleaning the win-
dows.
• Do not use any metallic objects to remove condensation build up.

■Repair and replacement
It is recommended that genuine Lexus parts be used for repairs to ensure optimum
pe
rformance. If non-Lexus replacement parts are used or if a repair shop other
than a Lexus dealer performs repairs, confirm the warranty coverage.
■Have inspections and repairs performe d by a Lexus dealer whenever possible
●Lexus technicians are well-trained specialists and are kept up to date with the
latest service information. They specialize in the operation of all systems on your
Lexus.
●Keep a copy of the repair order. It proves that the maintenance that has been
performed is under warranty coverage. If any problem should arise while your
vehicle is under warranty, your Lexus de aler will promptly take care of it.
CAUTION
■Hazardous materials
●Engine exhaust, some of its constituents, and a wide variety of automobile com -
ponents contain or emit chemicals known to the State of California to cause can -
cer and birth defects and other reproductive harm. Work in a well ventilated area.
●Oils, fuels and fluids contained in vehicles as well as waste produced by compo -
nent wear contain or emit chemicals known to the State of California to cause
cance
r and birth defects or other reproductive harm. Avoid exposure and wash
any affected area immediately.
●Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead and lead com -
pounds which are known to cause brain damage. Wash your hands after han -
dling. ( P.273 )
●Used engine oil contains chemicals that have caused cancer in laboratory ani -
mals. Avoid prolonged and repeated contact. Always protect your skin by wash -
ing thoroughly with soap and water.

CAUTION
The engine compartment contains many mechanisms and fluids that many move
suddenly, become hot, or become electrically energized. To avoid death or serious
injury:
■When working in the engine compartment:
●Keep hands, clothing, and tools away from the moving fan and engine drive belt.
●Be careful not to touch the engine, radiator, exhaust manifold and power steering
fluid reservoir, etc. right after driving as they may be hot. Oil and other fluids may
also be hot.
●Do not leave anything that may burn easily , such as paper or rags, in the engine
compartment.
●Do not smoke, cause sparks or expose an open flame to fuel or the battery. 
Fuel and battery fumes are flammable.
●Be extremely cautious when working on the battery. 
It contains poisonous and corrosive sulfuric acid.
■When the engine is running
Perform maintenance checks with adequate ventilation
■When working near the electric cooling fan or radiator grill:
Be sure the ignition is off. With the igni tion on, th
e electric cooling fan may automat-
ically start to run if the air conditioning is on and/
or if the coolant temperature is
high. ( P.262 )
■When working on or under the vehicle:
●Do not get under the vehicle with just the jack supporting it. 
Always use automotive jack stands or other solid supports.
●Use eye protection to prevent flying or falling material, fluid spray, etc. from get -
ting in your eyes.

With the engine at operating temperature and turned off, check the oil level on
the dipstick.
■ Checking the engine oil
Park the vehicle on level ground. 
After turning off the engine, wait a few minutes for the oil to drain
back into the bottom of the engine.
Hold a rag under the end and pull the
dipstick out.
Wipe it clean.
Reinsert the dipstick until fully seated.
Holding a rag under the end, pull the dipstick out and check the
oil level.
