COLD WEATHER PRECAUTIONS
The functional operation of somecomponents and systems can be affected attemperatures below approximately -13°F(-25°C).
DRIVING ON SNOW AND ICE
WARNING: If you are driving inslippery conditions that require tire chainsor cables, then it is critical that you drivecautiously. Keep speeds down, allow forlonger stopping distances and avoidaggressive steering to reduce the chancesof a loss of vehicle control which can leadto serious injury or death. If the rear endof your vehicle slides while cornering, steerin the direction of the slide until you regaincontrol of your vehicle.
On ice and snow, you should drive moreslowly than usual. Your vehicle has a fourwheel anti-lock brake system, do not pumpthe brake pedal. See Anti-Lock BrakingSystem Limitations (page 268).
In snow and ice, all-wheel drive vehicles haveadvantages over two-wheel drive vehiclesbut can still skid. When driving on snowy oricy roads, should you start to slide, turn thesteering wheel in the direction of the slideuntil you regain control.
On snow and ice, avoid suddenly applyingpower and avoid quick change of direction.Apply the accelerator slowly and steadilywhen starting from a stop.
Avoid sudden braking. An all-wheel drivevehicle may accelerate better than atwo-wheel drive vehicle in snow and ice. However, an all-wheel drive vehicle will notstop any faster, as braking occurs at all fourwheels. Do not become overconfident toroad conditions.
BREAKING-IN
You need to break in new tires forapproximately 300 mi (480 km). During thistime, your vehicle may exhibit some unusualdriving characteristics.
DRIVING ECONOMICALLY
The following helps to improve fuelconsumption:
•Drive smoothly, accelerate gently andanticipate the road ahead to avoid heavybraking.
•Regularly check your tire pressures andmake sure that they are inflated to thecorrect pressure.
•Follow the recommended maintenanceschedule and carry out therecommended checks.
•Plan your journey and check the trafficbefore you set off. It is more efficient tocombine errands into a single tripwhenever possible.
•Avoid idling the engine in cold weatheror for extended periods. Start the engineonly when you are ready to set off.
•Do not carry unnecessary weight in yourvehicle as extra weight wastes fuel.

•The anti-lock braking system is damagedduring the collision.
•Electronic stability control is disabled.
•Vehicle speed is below 5 mph (10 km/h).
OVERRIDING POST IMPACT BRAKING
You can override post impact braking bypressing the brake or accelerator pedal.
POST IMPACT BRAKING INDICATORS
It flashes when a post impactbraking event is occurring.
AUTOMATIC CRASH SHUTOFF
WHAT IS AUTOMATIC CRASHSHUTOFF
The automatic crash shutoff is designed tostop the fuel going to the engine in the eventof a moderate or severe crash.
Note:Not every impact causes a shutoff.
AUTOMATIC CRASH SHUTOFFPRECAUTIONS
WARNING: If your vehicle has beeninvolved in a crash, have the fuel systemchecked. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in fire, personal injury or death.
RE-ENABLING YOUR VEHICLE
1.Switch the ignition off.
2.Attempt to start your vehicle.
3.Switch the ignition off.
4.Attempt to start your vehicle.
Note:If your vehicle does not start after thethird attempt, have your vehicle checked assoon as possible.

WARNING: If you continue to driveyour vehicle when the engine isoverheating, the engine could stop withoutwarning. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in the loss of control of yourvehicle.
You may notice a reduction in vehicle speedcaused by reduced engine power in orderto manage the engine coolant temperature. Your vehicle may enter this mode if certainhigh-temperature and high-load conditionstake place. The amount of speed reductiondepends on vehicle loading, grade andoutside temperature. If this occurs, there isno need to stop your vehicle. You cancontinue to drive. See Fail-Safe Cooling(page 407).
The air conditioning may automatically turnon and off during severe operatingconditions to protect the engine fromoverheating. When the coolant temperaturedecreases to the normal operatingtemperature, the air conditioning turns on.
If the coolant temperature gauge moves fullyinto the red zone, or if the coolanttemperature warning or service engine soonmessages appear in your information display,do the following:
1.Stop your vehicle as soon as it is safe todo so. Fully apply the parking brake, shiftinto park (P) or neutral (N).
2.Leave the engine running until thecoolant temperature gauge needlereturns to the normal position. If thetemperature does not drop after severalminutes, follow the remaining steps.
3.Switch the engine off and wait for it tocool. Check the coolant level.
4.If the coolant level is at or below theminimum mark, add prediluted coolantimmediately.
5.If the coolant level is normal, restart theengine and continue.
COOLANT – WARNING LAMPS
If the engine begins to overheat, the coolant temperature gaugemoves toward the red zone.
A warning lamp illuminates and amessage may appear in theinformation display.

WARNING: This vehicle may havemore than one battery. Removing thebattery cables from only one battery doesnot disconnect your vehicle electricalsystem. Make sure you disconnect thebattery cables from all batteries whendisconnecting power. Failure to do so maycause serious personal injury or propertydamage.
WARNING: For vehicles withAuto-Start-Stop the battery requirement isdifferent. You must replace the battery withone of exactly the same specification.
WHAT IS THE BATTERYMANAGEMENT SYSTEM
The battery management system monitorsbattery conditions and takes actions toextend battery life.
HOW DOES THE BATTERYMANAGEMENT SYSTEM WORK
If excessive battery drain is detected, thesystem temporarily disables some electricalsystems to protect the battery.
Systems included are:
•Heated rear window.
•Heated seats.
•Climate control.
•Heated steering wheel.
•Audio unit.
•Navigation system.
A message could appear in the informationdisplay to alert you that battery protectionactions are active. This message is only fornotification that an action is taking place, andnot intended to indicate an electrical problemor that the battery requires replacement.
BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMLIMITATIONS
After battery replacement, or in some casesafter charging the battery with an externalcharger, the battery management systemrequires eight hours of vehicle sleep time torelearn the battery state of charge. Duringthis time, your vehicle must remain fullylocked with the ignition switched off.
Note:Prior to relearning the battery state ofcharge, the battery management systemcould temporarily disable some electricalsystems.
Electrical Accessory Installation
To make sure the battery managementsystem works correctly, do not connect anelectrical device ground connection directlyto the battery negative post. This can causeinaccurate measurements of the batterycondition and potential incorrect systemoperation.
