GENERAL INFORMATION
See the following sections for directions onhow to properly use safety restraints forchildren.
WARNING: Always make sure yourchild is secured properly in a device that isappropriate for their height, age and weight.Child safety restraints must be boughtseparately from your vehicle. Failure to followthese instructions and guidelines may resultin an increased risk of serious injury or deathto your child.
WARNING: All children are shapeddifferently. The National Highway TrafficSafety Administration and other safetyorganizations, base their recommendationsfor child restraints on probable child height,age and weight thresholds, or on theminimum requirements of the law. Werecommend that you check with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger Safety Technician(CPST) to make sure that you properly installthe child restraint in your vehicle and thatyou consult your pediatrician to make sureyou have a child restraint appropriate foryour child. To locate a child restraint fittingstation and CPST, contact NHTSA toll freeat 1-888-327-4236 or go to
www.nhtsa.dot.gov. In Canada, contactTransport Canada toll free at 1-800-333-0371or go to www.tc.gc.ca to find a Child Car SeatClinic in your area. WARNING: On hot days, thetemperature inside the vehicle can rise veryquickly. Exposure of people or animals tothese high temperatures for even a shorttime can cause death or serious heat relatedinjuries, including brain damage. Smallchildren are particularly at risk.

Recommendations for Safety Restraints for Children
Recommended restraint typeChild size, height, weight, or ageChild
Use a child safety seat (sometimes called aninfant carrier, convertible seat, or toddlerseat).
Children weighing 40 lb (18 kg) or less (generally age four oryounger).Infants or toddlers
Use a belt-positioning booster seat.
Children who have outgrown or no longer properly fit in a childsafety seat (generally children who are less than 4 ft. 9 in. (1.45 m)tall, are greater than age four and less than age 12, and between40 lb (18 kg) and 80 lb (36 kg) and upward to 100 lb (45 kg) ifrecommended by your child restraint manufacturer).
Small children
Use a vehicle seatbelt having the lap beltsnug and low across the hips, shoulder beltcentered across the shoulder and chest, andseatback upright.
Children who have outgrown or no longer properly fit in a belt-positioning booster seat (generally children who are at least 4 ft.9 in. (1.45 m) tall or greater than 80 lb (36 kg) or 100 lb (45 kg) ifrecommended by child restraint manufacturer).

7.Try to pull the belt out of the retractor tomake sure the retractor is in theautomatic locking mode (you should notbe able to pull more belt out). If theretractor is not locked, unbuckle the beltand repeat Steps 5 and 6.
8. Remove remaining slack from the belt.Force the seat down with extra weight,for example, by pressing down orkneeling on the child restraint whilepulling up on the shoulder belt in orderto force slack from the belt. This isnecessary to remove the remaining slackthat exists once you add the extra weight
of the child to the child restraint. It alsohelps to achieve the proper snugness ofthe child restraint to your vehicle.Sometimes, a slight lean toward thebuckle will additionally help to removeremaining slack from the belt.
9. Attach the tether strap (if the childrestraint is equipped).
10. Before placing the child in the seat,forcibly move the seat forward and backto make sure the seat is securely heldin place. To check this, grab the seat atthe belt path and attempt to move itside to side and forward and back.There should be no more than 1 in(2.5 cm) of movement for properinstallation.
We recommend checking with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger Safety Technicianto make certain the child restraint is properlyinstalled. In Canada, check with TransportCanada for referral to a Child Car Seat Clinic.
Using Lower Anchors and Tethers forCHildren (LATCH)
WARNING: Do not attach two childsafety restraints to the same anchor. In acrash, one anchor may not be strong enoughto hold two child safety restraint attachmentsand may break, causing serious injury ordeath.

If the booster seat slides on the vehicle seatupon which it is being used, placing arubberized mesh sold as shelf or carpet linerunder the booster seat may improve thiscondition. Do not introduce any item thickerthan this under the booster seat. Check withthe booster seat manufacturer's instructions.
CHILD RESTRAINT POSITIONING
WARNING: Do not place a rearwardfacing child restraint in front of an activeairbag. Failure to follow this instruction couldresult in personal injury or death.
WARNING: Properly secure children12 years old and under in a rear seatingposition whenever possible. If you are unableto properly secure all children in a rearseating position, properly secure the largestchild on the front seat. If you must use aforward facing child restraint on the frontseat, move the seat as far back as possible.Failure to follow these instructions couldresult in personal injury or death.
WARNING: Always carefully follow theinstructions and warnings provided by themanufacturer of any child restraint todetermine if the restraint device isappropriate for your child's size, height,weight, or age. Follow the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions and warningsprovided for installation and use inconjunction with the instructions andwarnings provided by your vehiclemanufacturer. A safety seat that is improperlyinstalled or utilized, is inappropriate for yourchild's height, age, or weight or does notproperly fit the child may increase the risk ofserious injury or death.
WARNING: Do not allow a passengerto hold a child on their lap when your vehicleis moving. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death in theevent of a sudden stop or crash.
WARNING: Do not use pillows, booksor towels to boost your child's height. Failureto follow this instruction could result inpersonal injury or death.
WARNING: Properly secure childrestraints or booster seats when they are notin use. They could become projectiles in asudden stop or crash. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injury ordeath.
WARNING: Do not put the shouldersection of the seatbelt or allow the child toput the shoulder section of the seatbeltunder their arm or behind their back. Failureto follow this instruction could reduce theeffectiveness of the seatbelt and increasethe risk of injury or death in a crash.
WARNING: Do not leave children orpets unattended in your vehicle. Failure tofollow this instruction could result in personalinjury or death.

FRONT PASSENGER SENSING
SYSTEM
WARNING: Even with advancedrestraints systems, properly restrain children12 and under in a rear seating position.Failure to follow this could seriously increasethe risk of injury or death.
WARNING: Sitting improperly, out ofposition or with the seatback reclined too farcan take weight off the seat cushion andaffect the decision of the passenger sensingsystem, resulting in serious injury or deathin the event of a crash. Always sit uprightagainst your seat back, with your feet on thefloor.
WARNING: Any alteration ormodification to the front passenger seat mayaffect the performance of the front passengersensing system. This could seriously increasethe risk of injury or death.
This system works with sensors that are partof the front passenger seat and seatbelt todetect the presence of a properly-seatedoccupant and determine if the frontpassenger frontal airbag should be enabled(may inflate) or not.
The front passenger sensing system uses apassenger airbag status indicator thatilluminates indicating that the frontpassenger frontal airbag is either ON(enabled) or OFF (disabled).
The indicator lamp is in the center stack ofthe instrument panel.
Note:The passenger airbag status indicatorOFF and ON indicator lamps illuminate fora short period of time when you first switchthe ignition on to confirm they are functional.
The front passenger sensing system isdesigned to disable (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag when the frontpassenger seat is unoccupied, or a rearfacing infant seat, a forward-facing childrestraint, or a booster seat is detected. Evenwith this technology, parents are stronglyencouraged to always properly restrainchildren in the rear seat. The sensor alsoturns off the passenger front airbag andseat-mounted side airbag when thepassenger seat is empty.
•When the front passenger sensingsystem disables (will not inflate) the frontpassenger frontal airbag, the passengerairbag status indicator illuminates theOFF lamp and stays lit to remind you thatthe front passenger frontal airbag isdisabled.
•If you have installed the child restraintand the passenger airbag status indicatorilluminates the ON lamp, then switch thevehicle off, remove the child restraintfrom the vehicle and reinstall the restraintfollowing the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions.

Note:When the passenger airbag statusindicator OFF light illuminates, the passenger(seat mounted) side airbag may be disabledto avoid the risk of airbag deploymentinjuries.
After all occupants have adjusted their seatsand put on seatbelts, it is very important thatthey continue to sit properly. A properlyseated occupant sits upright, leaning againstthe seat backrest, and centered on the seatcushion, with their feet comfortably extendedon the floor. Sitting improperly can increasethe chance of injury in a crash event. Forexample, if an occupant slouches, lies down,turns sideways, sits forward, leans forwardor sideways, or puts one or both feet up, thechance of injury during a crash greatlyincreases.
If you think that the status of the passengerairbag off indicator lamp is incorrect, checkfor the following:
•Objects lodged underneath the seat.
•Objects between the seat cushion andthe center console.
•Objects hanging off the seat backrest.
•Objects stowed in the seat backrest mappocket.
•Objects placed on the occupant's lap.
•Cargo interference with the seat
•Other passengers pushing or pulling onthe seat.
•Rear passenger feet and knees restingor pushing on the seat.
The conditions listed above may cause theweight of a properly seated occupant to beincorrectly interpreted by the front passengersensing system. The person in the frontpassenger seat may appear heavier or lighterdue to the conditions described in the listabove.
Make sure the front passengersensing system is operatingproperly. See Crash Sensors andAirbag Indicator (page 53).
If the airbag readiness light is lit, do thefollowing:
The driver and adult passengers shouldcheck for objects lodged underneath thefront passenger seat, or cargo interferingwith the seat.
If there are lodged objects, or cargo isinterfering with the seat, take the followingsteps to remove the obstruction:
•Pull the vehicle over.
•Switch the vehicle off.
•Driver and adult passengers shouldcheck for any objects lodged underneaththe front passenger seat or cargointerfering with the seat.
•Remove the obstruction(s) (if found).
•Restart the vehicle.
•Wait at least two minutes and verify thatthe airbag readiness light is no longerilluminated.
•If the airbag readiness light remainsilluminated, this may or may not be aproblem due to the front passengersensing system.
Do not attempt to repair or service thesystem. Take your vehicle immediately to anauthorized dealer.

POWER LIFTGATE
WARNING: It is extremely dangerousto ride in a cargo area, inside or outside ofa vehicle. In a crash, people riding in theseareas are more likely to be seriously injuredor killed. Do not allow people to ride in anyarea of your vehicle that is not equipped withseats and seatbelts. Make sure everyone inyour vehicle is in a seat and properly usinga seatbelt. Failure to follow this warningcould result in serious personal injury ordeath.
WARNING: Make sure that you fullyclose the liftgate to prevent exhaust fumesfrom entering your vehicle. If you are unableto fully close the liftgate, open the air ventsor the windows to allow fresh air to enteryour vehicle. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.
WARNING: Keep keys out of reach ofchildren. Do not allow children to operate orplay near an open or moving power liftgate.You should supervise the operation of thepower liftgate at all times.
Note: Make sure that you close the liftgatebefore operating or moving your vehicle,especially in an enclosure, like a garage ora parking structure. This could damage theliftgate and its components.
Note: Do not hang anything, for example abike rack, from the glass or liftgate. Thiscould damage the liftgate and itscomponents.
The liftgate only operates with thetransmission in park (P).
Three warning tones sound as the liftgatebegins to power close. One short chimeindicates a problem with the open or closerequest, caused by:
•The ignition is on and the transmissionis not in park (P).
•The battery voltage is below theminimum operating voltage.
•The vehicle speed is at or above 3 mph(5 km/h).
If the liftgate starts to close after it has fullyopened, this indicates there may beexcessive weight on the liftgate or a possiblestrut failure. A repetitive chime sounds andthe liftgate closes under control. Remove anyexcessive weight from the liftgate. If theliftgate continues to close after opening,have the system checked by an authorizeddealer.

SITTING IN THE CORRECT
POSITION
WARNING: Sitting improperly, out ofposition or with the seatback reclined too farcan take weight off the seat cushion andaffect the decision of the passenger sensingsystem, resulting in serious injury or deathin the event of a crash. Always sit uprightagainst your seat back, with your feet on thefloor.
WARNING: Do not recline the seatbacktoo far as this can cause the occupant toslide under the seatbelt, resulting in seriousinjury in the event of a collision.
WARNING: Do not place objects higherthan the top of the seat backrest. Failure tofollow this instruction could result in personalinjury or death in the event of a sudden stopor crash.
When you use them properly, the seat, headrestraint, seatbelt and airbags will provideoptimum protection in the event of a crash.
We recommend that you follow theseguidelines:
•Sit in an upright position with the base ofyour spine as far back as possible.
•Do not recline the seat backrest so thatyour torso is more than 30° from theupright position.
•Adjust the head restraint so that the topof it is level with the top of your head andas far forward as possible. Make sure thatyou remain comfortable.
•Keep sufficient distance betweenyourself and the steering wheel. Werecommend a minimum of 10 in (25 cm)between your breastbone and the airbagcover.
•Hold the steering wheel with your armsslightly bent.
•Bend your legs slightly so that you canpress the pedals fully.
•Position the shoulder strap of the seatbeltover the center of your shoulder andposition the lap strap tightly across yourhips.
Make sure that your driving position iscomfortable and that you can maintain fullcontrol of your vehicle.
