SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: Do not overfill the fueltank. The pressure in an overfilled tankmay cause leakage and lead to fuel sprayand fire.
WARNING: The fuel system may beunder pressure. If you hear a hissing soundnear the fuel filler inlet, do not refuel untilthe sound stops. Otherwise, fuel may sprayout, which could cause serious personalinjury.
WARNING: Fuels can cause seriousinjury or death if misused or mishandled.
WARNING: Fuel may containbenzene, which is a cancer-causing agent.
WARNING: When refueling alwaysshut the engine off and never allow sparksor open flames near the fuel tank fillervalve. Never smoke or use a cell phonewhile refueling. Fuel vapor is extremelyhazardous under certain conditions. Avoidinhaling excess fumes.
Follow these guidelines when refueling:
•Extinguish all smoking materials and anyopen flames before refueling yourvehicle.
•Always switch the engine off beforerefueling.
•Automotive fuels can be harmful or fatalif swallowed. Fuel is highly toxic and ifswallowed can cause death or permanentinjury. If fuel is swallowed immediatelycall a physician, even if no symptoms areimmediately apparent. The toxic effectsof fuel may not be apparent for hours.
•Avoid inhaling fuel vapors. Inhaling fuelvapor can lead to eye and respiratorytract irritation. In severe cases, excessiveor prolonged breathing of fuel vapor cancause serious illness and permanentinjury.
•Avoid getting fuel in your eyes. If yousplash fuel in your eyes, immediatelyremove contact lenses (if worn), flush withwater for 15 minutes and seek medicalattention. Failure to seek proper medicalattention could lead to permanent injury.
•Fuels can be harmful if absorbed throughthe skin. If you splash fuel on your skin,clothing or both, promptly removecontaminated clothing and thoroughlywash your skin with soap and water.Repeated or prolonged skin contactcauses skin irritation.
•Be particularly careful if you are takingAntabuse or other forms of Disulfiram forthe treatment of alcoholism. Breathingfuel vapors could cause an adversereaction, serious personal injury orsickness. Immediately call a physician ifyou experience any adverse reactions.

Fuel and Refueling

EMISSION LAW
WARNING: Do not remove or alterthe original equipment floor covering orinsulation between it and the metal floorof the vehicle. The floor covering andinsulation protect occupants of the vehiclefrom the engine and exhaust system heatand noise. On vehicles with no originalequipment floor covering insulation, do notcarry passengers in a manner that permitsprolonged skin contact with the metal floor.Failure to follow these instructions mayresult in fire or personal injury.
U.S. federal laws and certain state lawsprohibit removing or rendering inoperativeemission control system components. Similarfederal or provincial laws may apply inCanada. We do not approve of any vehiclemodification without first determiningapplicable laws.
Tampering with emissions controlsystems including related sensorsor the Diesel Exhaust Fluid systemcan result in reduced engine power and theillumination of the service engine soon light.
Tampering With a Noise ControlSystem
Federal laws prohibit the following acts:
•Removal or rendering inoperative by anyperson other than for purposes ofmaintenance.
•Repair or replacement of any device orelement of the design incorporated intoa new vehicle for the purpose of noisecontrol prior to its sale or delivery to theultimate purchaser or while it is in use.
•The use of the vehicle after any personremoves or renders inoperative anydevice or element of the design.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agencymay presume to constitute tampering asfollows:
•Removal of hood blanket, fender apronabsorbers, fender apron barriers,underbody noise shields or acousticallyabsorptive material.
•Tampering or rendering inoperative theengine speed governor, to allow enginespeed to exceed manufacturerspecifications.
If the engine does not start, runs rough,experiences a decrease in engineperformance, experiences excess fuelconsumption or produces excessive exhaustsmoke, check for the following:
•A plugged or disconnected air inletsystem hose.
•A plugged engine air filter element.
•Water in the fuel filter and waterseparator.
•A clogged fuel filter.
•Contaminated fuel.
•Air in the fuel system, due to looseconnections.

Engine Emission Control

If you cannot move the gearshift lever out ofpark (P) position with the ignition in the onposition and the brake pedal pressed, amalfunction may have occurred. It is possiblethat a fuse has blown or your vehicle’s brakelamps are not operating properly. See FuseSpecification Chart (page 262).
If the fuse is not blown and the brake lampsare working properly, the followingprocedure will allow you to move thegearshift lever from park (P):
1.Apply the parking brake, turn the ignitionoff and remove the key.
2. Remove the access plug on the side ofthe center console.
3. Apply the brake pedal. Using a suitabletool (for example, a screwdriver), pushthe brake-shift interlock override leverforward while pulling the gearshift leverout of park (P) and into neutral (N).
4. Install the access plug on side of thecenter console.
5. Apply the brake pedal, start the vehicle,and release the parking brake.
Automatic Transmission AdaptiveLearning
This feature may increase durability andprovide consistent shift feel over the life ofyour vehicle. A new vehicle or transmissionmay have firm shifts, soft shifts or both. Thisoperation is considered normal and does notaffect function or durability of thetransmission. Over time, the adaptivelearning process fully updates transmissionoperation.
If Your Vehicle Gets Stuck In Mud orSnow
Note:Do not rock the vehicle if the engineis not at normal operating temperature ordamage to the transmission may occur.
Note:Do not rock the vehicle for more thana minute or damage to the transmission andtires may occur, or the engine may overheat.
If your vehicle gets stuck in mud or snow,you may rock it out by shifting betweenforward and reverse gears, stoppingbetween shifts in a steady pattern. Presslightly on the accelerator in each gear.

acceleration or braking which could resultin an increased risk of loss of vehiclecontrol, vehicle rollover and/or personalinjury. Use all available road surface toreturn the vehicle to a safe direction oftravel.
•In the event of an emergency stop, avoidskidding the tires and do not attempt anysharp steering wheel movements.
•If the vehicle goes from one type ofsurface to another (that is, from concreteto gravel) there will be a change in theway the vehicle responds to a maneuver(steering, acceleration or braking). Again,avoid these abrupt inputs.
Sand
Most of the time traction control improvestire traction by managing wheel slip throughBrake, Engine, and AWD calibrations.However, during low speed driving, disablingtraction control in deep sand can help keepthe wheels moving to maintain vehiclemomentum.
When driving over sand, try to keep all fourwheels on the most solid area of the trail.Avoid reducing the tire pressures but shiftto a lower gear and drive steadily throughthe terrain. Apply the accelerator slowly andavoid spinning the wheels.
Do not drive your vehicle in deep sand foran extended period of time. This couldcause the AWD system to overheat anddefault to front-wheel drive. If this occurs,an AWD OFF message displays in theinformation display. To resume normal AWDfunction as soon as possible, stop the vehiclein a safe location and stop the engine for atleast 10 minutes. After the engine has beenrestarted and the AWD system hasadequately cooled, the AWD OFF messageturns off and normal AWD function returns. In the event the engine is not stopped, theAWD OFF message turns off when thesystem cools and normal AWD functionreturns.
When driving at slow speeds in deep sandunder high outside temperatures, use L (Low)gear when possible. L (Low) gear operationwill maximize the engine and transmissioncooling capability.
Under severe operating conditions, the A/Cmay cycle on and off to protect overheatingof the engine.
Avoid excessive speed because vehiclemomentum can work against you and causethe vehicle to become stuck to the point thatassistance may be required from anothervehicle. Remember, you may be able to backout the way you came if you proceed withcaution.
Mud and Water
If you must drive through high water, driveslowly. Traction or brake capability may belimited.
When driving through water, determine thedepth; avoid water higher than the bottomof the wheel rims (for cars) or the bottom ofthe hubs (for trucks) (if possible) and proceedslowly. If the ignition system gets wet, thevehicle may stall.

All-Wheel Drive (If Equipped)

Once through water, always try the brakes.Wet brakes do not stop the vehicle aseffectively as dry brakes. Drying can beimproved by moving your vehicle slowlywhile applying light pressure on the brakepedal.
Be cautious of sudden changes in vehiclespeed or direction when you are driving inmud. Even AWD vehicles can lose tractionin slick mud. As when you are driving oversand, apply the accelerator slowly and avoidspinning your wheels. If the vehicle doesslide, steer in the direction of the slide untilyou regain control of the vehicle.
After driving through mud, clean off residuestuck to rotating driveshafts and tires. Excessmud stuck on tires and rotating driveshaftscauses an imbalance that could damagedrive components.
Note:Driving through deep water maydamage the transmission.
If the front or rear axle is submerged in water,have the power transfer unit (PTU) or rearaxle serviced by an authorized dealer.

Driving on Hilly or Sloping Terrain
Note:Avoid driving crosswise or turning onsteep slopes or hills. A danger lies in losingtraction, slipping sideways and possiblyrolling over. Whenever driving on a hill,determine beforehand the route you will use.Do not drive over the crest of a hill withoutseeing what conditions are on the other side.Do not drive in reverse over a hill withoutthe aid of an observer.
Although natural obstacles may make itnecessary to travel diagonally up or down ahill or steep incline, you should always try todrive straight up or straight down.
When climbing a steep slope or hill, start ina lower gear rather than downshifting to alower gear from a higher gear once theascent has started. This reduces strain onthe engine and the possibility of stalling.
If you do stall out, do not try to turnaroundbecause you might roll over. It is better toback down to a safe location.
Apply just enough power to the wheels toclimb the hill. Too much power will cause thetires to slip, spin or lose traction, resulting inloss of vehicle control.

All-Wheel Drive (If Equipped)E143950

Coverage area of up to 6 ft (1.8 m) from therear bumper. There may be decreasedcoverage area at the outer corners of thebumper.
The system detects certain objects while thetransmission is in reverse (R) :
•Your vehicle is moving toward astationary object at a speed of 3 mph(5 km/h) or less.
•Your vehicle is not moving, but a movingobject is approaching the rear of yourvehicle at a speed of 3 mph (5 km/h) orless.
•Your vehicle is moving at a speed of lessthan 3 mph (5 km/h) and a moving objectis approaching the rear of your vehicleat a speed of less than 3 mph (5 km/h).
ACTIVE PARK ASSIST (If Equipped)
WARNING: You must remain in yourvehicle when the system turns on. At alltimes, you are responsible for controllingyour vehicle, supervising the system andintervening, if required. Failure to take caremay result in the loss of control of yourvehicle, serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: The system is designedto aid the driver. It is not intended toreplace your attention and judgment. Youare still responsible to drive with due careand attention.
WARNING: The sensors may notdetect objects in heavy rain or otherconditions that cause interference.
WARNING: Active park assist doesnot apply the brakes under anycircumstances.
Note:The blind spot information systemdoes not detect traffic alongside or behindyour vehicle during an active park assistmaneuver.
Note:Active park assist is a multi-stepprocess and may require you to shift yourtransmission multiple times. Follow theon-screen instructions until you complete theparking process.

When driving at a speed less than 22 mph(35 km/h), the system automatically scansboth sides of your vehicle for an availableparking space. The system displays amessage and a corresponding graphic toindicate it is searching for a parking space.
Use the direction indicator to selectsearching either to the left hand side or righthand side of your vehicle. If the directionindicator is not used, the system defaults tothe passenger side of your vehicle.
When the system finds a suitable space itdisplays a message and a tone sounds. Stopyour vehicle and follow the instructions onthe display screen. If your vehicle is movingvery slowly, you may need to pull forward ashort distance before the system is ready topark.
Note:You can also activate the system afteryou drive partially or completely pass theparking space. To do so, press the activepark assist button and the system informsyou if you recently passed a suitable parkingspace.
Note:You must observe that the selectedspace remains clear of obstructions at alltimes in the maneuver.
Note:You should drive your vehicle within5 ft (1.5 m) and as parallel to the othervehicles as possible while passing a parkingspace.
Note:The system always offers the lastdetected parking space. For example, if yourvehicle detects multiple spaces while youare driving, it offers the last detected space.

Automatic Steering into Parking Space
Note:If vehicle speed exceeds 6 mph(9 km/h) or the maneuver is interrupted, forexample driver input is detected, the systemswitches off and you need to take full controlof your vehicle.
When you shift the transmission into reverse(R), with your hands off the steering wheeland nothing obstructing its movement, yourvehicle steers itself into the space. Thesystem displays instructions to move yourvehicle back and forth in the space.
When you think your vehicle has enoughspace in front and behind it, or you hear asolid tone from the parking aid (accompaniedby a touchscreen display message and achime), bring your vehicle to a complete stop.
When automatic steering is complete, thesystem displays a message and a chimesounds, indicating that the active park assistprocess is finished. You are responsible forchecking the parking job and making anynecessary corrections before leaving yourvehicle.
Deactivating the Park Assist Feature
Manually deactivate the system by:
•Pressing the active park assist buttonduring an active maneuver.
•Grabbing the steering wheel during anactive maneuver.
•Driving above approximately 22 mph(35 km/h) for 30 seconds during an activepark search.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
Cruise control lets you maintain a set speedwithout keeping your foot on the acceleratorpedal. You can use cruise control when yourvehicle speed is greater than 20 mph(30 km/h).
USING CRUISE CONTROL
WARNING: Do not use cruise controlon winding roads, in heavy traffic or whenthe road surface is slippery. This couldresult in loss of vehicle control, seriousinjury or death.
WARNING: When you are goingdownhill, your vehicle speed couldincrease above the set speed. The systemdoes not apply the brakes.
To help the system to maintain the set speedwhen going downhill, downshift to a lowergear.
Your vehicle speed could decrease belowthe set speed when driving uphill.
Note:The system cancels if your vehiclespeed drops below 10 mph (16 km/h) underthe set speed when driving uphill.
The cruise controls are on the steeringwheel. See Cruise Control (page 81).
Switching Cruise Control On
Press the toggle button upward.
The indicator appears in theinformation display.
Setting the Cruise Speed
Drive to the desired speed.
Press the toggle button upward ordownward to set the currentspeed.
Take your foot off the accelerator pedal.
Note:The indicator changes color.
Changing the Set Speed
Press the toggle button upward ordownward to increase or decreasethe set speed in small increments.
Press and hold up or down to accelerate ordecelerate, respectively. Release the buttonwhen you reach the desired speed.
Press the accelerator or brake pedal untilyou reach the desired speed. Press thetoggle button either direction.
Note: If you accelerate by pressing only theaccelerator pedal, the set speed does notchange. When you release the acceleratorpedal, your vehicle returns to the speed thatyou previously set.

WARNING: Adaptive cruise controlis not a crash warning or avoidancesystem.

The system adjusts your vehicle speed tomaintain the set gap between you and thevehicle in front of you in the same lane. Youcan select four gap settings.
The system uses a radar sensor that projectsa beam directly in front of your vehicle.
The adaptive cruise controls are on thesteering wheel.
Switching Adaptive Cruise Control On
Press and release the button.

Setting the Adaptive Cruise Speed
Drive to your preferred speed.
Press the toggle button upward ordownward to set the currentspeed.

Note:When adaptive cruise control is active,the speedometer may vary slightly from theset speed displayed in the informationdisplay.
Following a Vehicle
WARNING: When following a vehicle,your vehicle does not always deceleratequickly enough to avoid a crash withoutdriver intervention. Always apply thebrakes when necessary. Failing to do somay result in a crash, serious injury ordeath.
