PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNING: Always drive and ridewith your seatback upright and the lap beltsnug and low across the hips.
WARNING: Children must always beproperly restrained.
WARNING: Never let a passengerhold a child on his or her lap while thevehicle is moving. The passenger cannotprotect the child from injury in a crash.
WARNING: All occupants of yourvehicle, including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their seatbelts, even whenan airbag supplemental restraint system isprovided. Failure to properly wear yourseatbelt could seriously increase the riskof injury or death.
WARNING: It is extremely dangerousto ride in a cargo area, inside or outside ofa vehicle. In a crash, people riding in theseareas are more likely to be seriouslyinjured or killed. Do not allow people toride in any area of your vehicle that is notequipped with seats and seatbelts. Makesure everyone in your vehicle is in a seatand properly using a seatbelt. Failure tofollow this warning could result in seriouspersonal injury or death.
WARNING: In a rollover crash, anunbelted person is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing a seatbelt.
WARNING: Each seating position inyour vehicle has a specific seatbeltassembly made up of one buckle and onetongue designed to be used as a pair. Usethe shoulder belt on the outside shoulderonly. Never wear the shoulder belt underthe arm. Never use a single seatbelt formore than one person.
WARNING: Even with advancedrestraints systems, properly restrainchildren 12 and under in a rear seatingposition. Failure to follow this couldseriously increase the risk of injury ordeath.
WARNING: Seatbelts and seats maybe hot in a vehicle that is in the sunshine.The hot seatbelts or seats may burn a smallchild. Check seat covers and bucklesbefore you place a child anywhere nearthem.
All seating positions in your vehicle have lapand shoulder seatbelts. All occupants of thevehicle should always properly wear theirseatbelts, even when an airbag supplementalrestraint system is provided.
The seatbelt system consists of:
•Lap and shoulder seatbelts.
•Shoulder seatbelt with automatic lockingmode, (except driver seatbelt and rearinflatable seatbelt).

•Height adjuster at the front outboardseating positions.
•Seatbelt pretensioner at the frontoutboard seating positions.
•Belt tension sensor at the front outboardpassenger seating position.
•Seatbelt warning light and chime.
•Crash sensors and monitoring systemwith readiness indicator.
The seatbelt pretensioners and rearinflatable seatbelts are designed to activatein frontal, near-frontal and side crashes, andin rollovers. The seatbelt pretensioners atthe front seating positions are designed totighten the seatbelts firmly against theoccupant’s body when activated. This helpsincrease the effectiveness of the seatbelts.In frontal crashes, the seatbelt pretensionerscan be activated alone or, if the crash is ofsufficient severity, together with the frontairbags.
FASTENING THE SEATBELTS
Standard belts shown, inflatable belts similar
The front outboard and rear safety restraintsin the vehicle are combination lap andshoulder belts.
1. Insert the belt tongue into the properbuckle (the buckle closest to the directionthe tongue is coming from) until you heara click and feel it latch. Make sure yousecurely fasten the tongue in the buckle.
2. To unfasten, press the release buttonand remove the tongue from the buckle.
Using Seatbelts During Pregnancy
WARNING: Always ride and drivewith your seatback upright and properlyfasten your seatbelt. Fit the lap portion ofthe seatbelt snugly and low across thehips. Position the shoulder portion of theseatbelt across your chest. Pregnantwomen must follow this practice. See thefollowing figure.

Pregnant women should always wear theirseatbelt. Position the lap belt portion of acombination lap and shoulder belt low acrossthe hips below the belly and worn as tightas comfort allows. Position the shoulder beltto cross the middle of the shoulder and thecenter of the chest.
Third Row Seatbelt Stowage
WARNING: Make sure to put bothportions of the shoulder belt in thestowage clip. Putting only one portion ofthe shoulder belt in the stowage clipincreases the amount of belt slack and mayreduce the effectiveness of the seatbelt inthe event of a crash.
To stow the seatbelt, grasp both portions ofthe shoulder belt together in one hand andslide them into the seatbelt stowage clip asshown.
Keep the outer and inner shoulder beltstogether in the stowage clip to prevent thepotential of wrinkling the cargo shade.
Seatbelt Locking Modes
WARNING: If your vehicle is involvedin a crash, have the seatbelts andassociated components inspected as soonas possible. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.

All safety restraints in the vehicle arecombination lap and shoulder belts. Thedriver seatbelt has the vehicle sensitivelocking mode. The front outboard passengerand rear seatbelts have both the vehiclesensitive locking mode and the automaticlocking mode.
Vehicle Sensitive Mode
This is the normal retractor mode, whichallows free shoulder belt length adjustmentto your movements and locking in responseto vehicle movement. For example, if thedriver brakes suddenly or turns a cornersharply, or the vehicle receives an impact ofabout 5 mph (8 km/h) or more, thecombination seatbelts lock to help reduceforward movement of the driver andpassengers.
In addition, the retractor is designed to lockif you pull the webbing out too quickly. If theseatbelt retractor locks, slowly lower theheight adjuster to allow the seatbelt toretract. If the retractor does not unlock, pullthe seatbelt out slowly then feed a small
length of webbing back toward the stowedposition. For rear seatbelts, recline the rearseat backrest or push the seat backrestcushion away from the seatbelt. Feed a smalllength of webbing back toward the stowedposition.
Automatic Locking Mode
In this mode, the shoulder belt automaticallypre-locks. The belt retracts to remove anyslack in the shoulder belt. The automaticlocking mode is not available on the driverseatbelt.
When to Use the Automatic Locking Mode
Use this mode any time a child safety seat,except a booster, is installed in passengerfront or rear seating positions. Properlyrestrain children 12 years old and under in arear seating position whenever possible.See Child Safety (page 18).
How to Use the Automatic Locking Mode
Non-inflatable seatbelts
1.Buckle the combination lap and shoulderbelt.
2. Grasp the shoulder portion and pulldownward until you pull the entire beltout. As the belt retracts, you will hear aclicking sound. This indicates the seatbeltis now in the automatic locking mode.
Rear outboard inflatable seatbelts (secondrow only–if equipped)

1.Buckle the combination lap and shoulderbelt.
2.Grasp the lap portion of the belt and pullupward until you pull the entire belt out.
3. Allow the belt to retract. As the beltretracts, you will hear a clicking sound.This indicates the seatbelt is now in theautomatic locking mode.
How to Disengage the Automatic LockingMode
Unbuckle the combination lap and shoulderbelt and allow it to retract completely todisengage the automatic locking mode andactivate the vehicle sensitive (emergency)locking mode.
Rear Inflatable Seatbelt (If Equipped)
WARNING: Do not attempt to service,repair, or modify the supplementaryrestraint system or associated components.Failure to follow this instruction could resultin personal injury or death.
Note:The rear inflatable seatbelts arecompatible with most infant and child safetycar seats and belt positioning booster seatswhen properly installed. This is because theyare designed to fill with a cooled gas at alower pressure and at a slower rate thantraditional airbags. After inflation, theshoulder portion of the seatbelt remains coolto the touch.
The rear inflatable seatbelts are in theshoulder portion of the seatbelts of thesecond-row outboard seating positions.
The rear inflatable seatbelt consists of thefollowing:
•An inflatable bag in the shoulder seatbeltwebbing.
•Lap seatbelt webbing with automaticlocking mode.
•Crash sensors and monitoring systemwith readiness indicator. See CrashSensors and Airbag Indicator (page 57).
How does the rear inflatable seatbeltsystem work?
WARNING: If a supplementaryrestraint system component has deployed,it will not function again. Have the systemand associated components inspected assoon as possible. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injuryor death.
The rear inflatable seatbelts functions likestandard restraints in everyday usage.

During a crash of sufficient force, theinflatable belt inflates from inside thewebbing.
The fully inflated belt's increased diametermore effectively holds the occupant in theappropriate seating position, and spreadscrash forces over more area of the body thanregular seatbelts. This helps reduce pressureon the chest and helps control head andneck motion for passengers.
The rear inflatable seatbelts are designed toinflate in frontal or near-frontal crashes, someside impact crashes and rollovers. The factthat the rear inflatable seatbelt did not inflatein a crash does not mean that something iswrong with the system. Rather, it means theforces were not of the type sufficient tocause activation.
Stowing the Rear Inflatable Seatbelt
The rear inflatable seatbelt has a snapretainer for stowing the seatbelt against thequarter trim panel when it is not in use. Thisprevents the seatbelt tongue from rattlingagainst the side of the seat and keeps it outof the way when folding or tumbling thesecond row seats.
Press the retainer on the seatbelt onto themating snap to stow. To use the seatbelt,pull it away from the quarter trim panel.
SEATBELT HEIGHT ADJUSTMENT
WARNING: Position the safety beltheight adjuster so that the belt rests acrossthe middle of your shoulder. Failure toadjust the safety belt properly couldreduce the effectiveness of the safety beltand increase the risk of injury in a crash.

Adjust the height of the shoulder belt so thebelt rests across the middle of your shoulder.To adjust the shoulder belt height:
1.Press the side release buttons and slidethe height adjuster up or down.
2. Release the buttons and pull down onthe height adjuster to make sure it islocked in place.
SEATBELT WARNING LAMP AND

This lamp illuminates and anindicator chime will sound if thedriver seatbelt has not beenfastened when the vehicle's ignition is turnedon.

SEATBELT REMINDER
Belt-Minder™
This feature supplements the safety beltwarning function by providing additionalreminders that intermittently sound a toneand illuminate the safety belt warning lightwhen you are in the driver seat or you havea front seat passenger and a safety belt is
unbuckled.
The system uses information from the frontpassenger sensing system to determine if afront seat passenger is present and thereforepotentially in need of a warning. To avoidthe system turning on the Belt-Minder featurefor objects you place on the front passengerseat, only the front seat passengers receivewarnings as determined by the frontpassenger sensing system.
If the Belt-Minder warnings expire (warningsfor about five minutes) for one passenger(driver or front passenger), the otherpassenger can still cause the Belt-Minderfeature to turn on.
Then...If...
The Belt-Minder feature will not activate.You and the front seat passenger buckle your safety belts before youswitch the ignition on or less than 1–2 minutes elapse after you switchthe ignition on...
The Belt-Minder feature activates, the safety belt warning light illumin-ates and a warning tone sounds for 6 seconds every 25 seconds,repeating for about 5 minutes or until you and the front seat passengerbuckle your safety belts.
You or the front seat passenger do not buckle your safety belts beforeyour vehicle reaches at least 6 mph (9.7 km/h) and 1–2 minutes elapseafter you switch the ignition on...
The Belt-Minder feature activates, the safety belt warning light illumin-ates and a warning tone sounds for 6 seconds every 25 seconds,repeating for about 5 minutes or until you and the front seat passengerbuckle your safety belts.

Deactivating and Activating the Belt-MinderFeature
WARNING: While the system allowsyou to switch this feature off, the intent ofthe system is to remind you to wear yoursafety belt to improve your chance tosurvive an accident. We recommend youleave the system switched on for yourselfand others who may use the vehicle.
Note:The driver and front passengerwarnings switch on and off independently.When you perform this procedure for oneseating position, do not buckle the otherposition as this will terminate the process.
Note:If you are using MyKey, you cannotdisable the Belt-Minder. Also, if you havepreviously disabled the Belt-Minder, it willbe re-enabled during the use of MyKey. SeeMyKey™ (page 64). .
Read Steps 1–4 thoroughly beforeproceeding with the programmingprocedure.
Before following the procedure, make surethat:
•The parking brake is set.
•The transmission is in park (P).
•The ignition is off.
•The driver and front passenger safetybelts are unbuckled.
1. Switch the ignition on. Do not start thevehicle.
2. Wait until the safety belt warning lightturns off (about 1 minute). After Step 2,wait an additional 5 seconds beforeproceeding with Step 3. Once you startStep 3, you must complete the procedurewithin 20 seconds.
3.For the seating position you are switchingoff, buckle then unbuckle the safety beltthree times at a moderate speed, endingin the unbuckled state. After Step 3, thesafety belt warning light turns on.
4. While the safety belt warning light is on,buckle and then unbuckle the safety belt.After Step 4, the safety belt warning lightflashes for confirmation.
•This will switch the feature off for thatseating position if it is currently on.
•This will switch the feature on for thatseating position if it is currently off.
CHILD RESTRAINT AND SEATBELT
MAINTENANCE
Inspect the vehicle seatbelts and child safetyseat systems periodically to make sure theywork properly and are not damaged. Inspectthe vehicle and child restraint seatbelts tomake sure there are no nicks, tears or cuts.Replace if necessary. All vehicle seatbeltassemblies, including retractors, buckles,front seatbelt buckle assemblies, bucklesupport assemblies (slide bar-if equipped),shoulder belt height adjusters (if equipped),shoulder belt guide on seat backrest (ifequipped), child safety seat LATCH andtether anchors, and attaching hardware,should be inspected after a crash. Read thechild restraint manufacturer's instructions foradditional inspection and maintenanceinformation specific to the child restraint.

Seatbelts

We recommend that all seatbelt assembliesin use in vehicles involved in a crash bereplaced. However, if the crash was minorand an authorized dealer finds that the beltsdo not show damage and continue tooperate properly, they do not need to bereplaced. Seatbelt assemblies not in useduring a crash should also be inspected andreplaced if either damage or improperoperation is noted.
Properly care for seatbelts. See VehicleCare (page 303).
SEATBELT EXTENSION
WARNING: Persons who fit into thevehicle's seatbelt should not use anextension. Unnecessary use could resultin serious personal injury in the event of acrash.
WARNING: Only use extensionsprovided free of charge by Lincoln MotorCompany dealers. The dealer will providean extension designed specifically for thisvehicle, model year and seating position.The use of an extension intended foranother vehicle, model year or seatingposition may not offer you the fullprotection of your vehicle’s seatbeltrestraint system.
WARNING: Never use seatbeltextensions to install child restraints.
WARNING: Do not use a seatbeltextension with an inflatable seatbelt.
WARNING: Do not use extensionsto change the fit of the belt across thetorso, over the lap or to make the seatbeltbuckle easier to reach.
If, because of body size or driving position,it is not possible to properly fasten theseatbelt over your lap and shoulder, anextension that is compatible with theseatbelts is available free of charge fromLincoln Motor Company dealers. Only Lincolnseatbelt extensions made by the samecompany which made the original equipmentseatbelts, should be used with Lincolnseatbelts. Ask your authorized dealer if yourextension is compatible with your Lincolnvehicle restraint system.
