Note:Do not use aftermarket funnels; theywill not work with the capless fuel systemand can damage it. The included speciallydesigned funnel works safely with yourvehicle.
When filling the vehicle’s fuel tank from aportable fuel container, use the funnelincluded with the vehicle.
The funnel is located in the rear of thevehicle, inside the load compartment,underneath the load floor carpet and isaccessible from the trunk.
1. Locate the portable funnel that comeswith your vehicle.
2. Slowly insert the funnel into the caplessfuel system.
3.Fill the vehicle with fuel from the portablefuel container.
4.When done, clean the funnel or properlydispose of it. You can purchase extrafunnels from your authorized dealer ifyou choose to dispose of the funnel.
REFUELING
WARNING: Do not overfill the fuel tank.The pressure in an overfilled tank may causeleakage and lead to fuel spray and fire.

WARNING: Do not remove the fuelpump nozzle from its fully inserted positionwhen refueling.
WARNING: When refueling always shutthe engine off and never allow sparks oropen flames near the fuel tank filler valve.Never smoke or use a cell phone whilerefueling. Fuel vapor is extremely hazardousunder certain conditions. Avoid inhalingexcess fumes.
WARNING: Stop refueling when thefuel pump nozzle automatically shuts off forthe first time. Failure to follow this will fill theexpansion space in the fuel tank and couldlead to fuel overflowing.
WARNING: Wait at least 10 secondsbefore removing the fuel pump nozzle toallow any residual fuel to drain into the fueltank.
WARNING: The fuel system may beunder pressure. If you hear a hissing soundnear the fuel filler inlet, do not refuel until thesound stops. Otherwise, fuel may spray out,which could cause serious personal injury.
WARNING: Read and follow all theinstructions on the pump island.
1. When you stop your vehicle, shift intopark (P) or neutral (N) and switch theignition off.
Note:Beijing district only.
2. Press the button on the driver door toopen the fuel filler door. The fuel fillerdoor can take up to 15 seconds to openbefore you can insert a fuel filler nozzle.

3.Insert the fuel pump nozzle up to the firstnotch on the nozzle A. Keep it restingon the cover of the fuel tank filler pipeopening.
4. Hold the fuel pump nozzle in position Bwhen refueling. Holding the fuel nozzlein position A can affect the flow of fueland shut off the fuel nozzle before thefuel tank is full.
5.Operate the fuel pump nozzle within thearea shown.
6. Slightly raise the fuel pump nozzle andthen slowly remove it.
7. Fully close the fuel filler door.
Note:To close the fuel filler door, press thecenter rear edge of the fuel filler door andthen release.
You must complete the refueling processwithin 20 minutes. If 20 minutes elapses,you must press the button on the driver dooragain. Fuel pump nozzle automatic shut offmay occur if you do not press the button onthe driver door.
System Warnings
If the fuel filler door fails to open, aninformation message appears in theinformation display.

Description and ActionMessage
A warning message appearsin the information displaywhen the fuel system fails todepressurize or the fuel fillerdoor fails to open. You mayhave to use the fuel filler doormanual override lever.
Refuel ErrorSee Manual
If the information message appears, do thefollowing:
1.Check the fuel filler door for anything thatmay be obstructing its movement, forexample ice or snow.
2. Remove any obstruction from the fuelfiller door.
3. Press the button on the driver door toopen the fuel filler door.
4.If the fuel filler door fails to open and theinformation message remains in theinformation display, use the fuel fillerdoor manual override lever.
Fuel Filler Door Manual Override Lever
Note:The transmission must be in park (P)or neutral (N).
When using the manual override lever dothe following:
1. Switch the ignition on.
2. Open the luggage compartment, themanual override lever is located on theleft-hand side.
3. Pull the manual override lever.
4. Switch the ignition off.
5. Complete the refueling process within20 minutes.
FUEL CONSUMPTION
Advertised Capacity
The advertised capacity is the maximumamount of fuel that you can add to the fueltank after running out of fuel. Included in theadvertised capacity is an empty reserve. Theempty reserve is an unspecified amount offuel that remains in the fuel tank when thefuel gauge indicates empty.
Note:The amount of fuel in the emptyreserve varies and should not be relied uponto increase driving range.
Fuel Economy
Your vehicle calculates fuel economy figuresthrough the trip computer average fuelfunction. See General Information (page110).
The first 1,000 mi (1,500 km) of driving is thebreak-in period of the engine. A moreaccurate measurement is obtained after2,000 mi (3,000 km).

EMISSION LAW
WARNING: Do not remove or alter theoriginal equipment floor covering orinsulation between it and the metal floor ofthe vehicle. The floor covering and insulationprotect occupants of the vehicle from theengine and exhaust system heat and noise.On vehicles with no original equipment floorcovering insulation, do not carry passengersin a manner that permits prolonged skincontact with the metal floor. Failure to followthese instructions may result in fire orpersonal injury.
U.S. federal laws and certain state lawsprohibit removing or rendering inoperativeemission control system components. Similarfederal or provincial laws may apply inCanada. We do not approve of any vehiclemodification without first determiningapplicable laws.
Tampering with emissions controlsystems including related sensorsor the Diesel Exhaust Fluid systemcan result in reduced engine power and theillumination of the service engine soon light.
Tampering With a Noise ControlSystem
Federal laws prohibit the following acts:
•Removal or rendering inoperative by anyperson other than for purposes ofmaintenance.
•Repair or replacement of any device orelement of the design incorporated intoa new vehicle for the purpose of noisecontrol prior to its sale or delivery to theultimate purchaser or while it is in use.
•The use of the vehicle after any personremoves or renders inoperative anydevice or element of the design.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agencymay presume to constitute tampering asfollows:
•Removal of hood blanket, fender apronabsorbers, fender apron barriers,underbody noise shields or acousticallyabsorptive material.
•Tampering or rendering inoperative theengine speed governor, to allow enginespeed to exceed manufacturerspecifications.
If the engine does not start, runs rough,experiences a decrease in engineperformance, experiences excess fuelconsumption or produces excessive exhaustsmoke, check for the following:
•A plugged or disconnected air inletsystem hose.
•A plugged engine air filter element.
•Water in the fuel filter and waterseparator.
•A clogged fuel filter.
•Contaminated fuel.
•Air in the fuel system, due to looseconnections.

•An open or pinched sensor hose.
•Incorrect engine oil level.
•Incorrect fuel for climatic conditions.
•Incorrect engine oil viscosity for climacticconditions.
Note:Some vehicles have a lifetime fuel filterthat is integrated with the fuel tank. Regularmaintenance or replacement is not needed.
Note:If these checks do not help you correctthe concern, have your vehicle checked assoon as possible.
Noise Emissions Warranty, ProhibitedTampering Acts and Maintenance
On January 1, 1978, Federal regulationbecame effective governing the noiseemission on trucks over 10,000 lb (4,536 kg)Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR). Thepreceding statements concerning prohibitedtampering acts and maintenance, and thenoise warranty found in the Warranty Guide,are applicable to complete chassis cabs over10,000 lb (4,536 kg) GVWR.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER
WARNING: Do not park, idle or driveyour vehicle on dry grass or other dry groundcover. The emission system heats up theengine compartment and exhaust system,creating the risk of fire.
WARNING: The normal operatingtemperature of the exhaust system is veryhigh. Never work around or attempt to repairany part of the exhaust system until it hascooled. Use special care when workingaround the catalytic converter. The catalyticconverter heats up to a very hightemperature after only a short period ofengine operation and stays hot after theengine is switched off.
WARNING: Exhaust leaks may resultin entry of harmful and potentially lethalfumes into the passenger compartment. Ifyou smell exhaust fumes inside your vehicle,have your vehicle inspected immediately. Donot drive if you smell exhaust fumes.
Your vehicle has various emission controlcomponents and a catalytic converter thatenables it to comply with applicable exhaustemission standards.
To make sure that the catalytic converter andother emission control components continueto work properly:
•Do not crank the engine for more than10 seconds at a time.
•Do not run the engine with a spark pluglead disconnected.
•Do not push-start or tow-start yourvehicle. Use booster cables. See JumpStarting the Vehicle (page 264).
•Use only the specified fuel listed.
•Do not switch the ignition off when yourvehicle is moving.
•Avoid running out of fuel.
•Have the items listed in scheduledmaintenance information performedaccording to the specified schedule.
Note:Resulting component damage maynot be covered by the vehicle Warranty.

The scheduled maintenance items listed inscheduled maintenance information areessential to the life and performance of yourvehicle and to its emissions system.
If you use anything other than Lincoln,Motorcraft or Lincoln-authorized parts formaintenance replacements or for service ofcomponents affecting emission control, suchnon-Lincoln parts should be equivalent togenuine Lincoln Motor Company parts inperformance and durability.
Illumination of the service engine soonindicator, charging system warning light orthe temperature warning light, fluid leaks,strange odors, smoke or loss of enginepower could indicate that the emissioncontrol system is not working properly.
An improperly operating or damaged exhaustsystem may allow exhaust to enter thevehicle. Have a damaged or improperlyoperating exhaust system inspected andrepaired immediately.
Do not make any unauthorized changes toyour vehicle or engine. By law, vehicleowners and anyone who manufactures,repairs, services, sells, leases, tradesvehicles, or supervises a fleet of vehicles arenot permitted to intentionally remove anemission control device or prevent it fromworking. Information about your vehicle’semission system is on the Vehicle EmissionControl Information Decal located on or nearthe engine. This decal also lists enginedisplacement.
Please consult your warranty information forcomplete details.
On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II)
Your vehicle has a computer known as theon-board diagnostics system (OBD-II) thatmonitors the engine’s emission controlsystem. The system protects the environmentby making sure that your vehicle continuesto meet government emission standards. TheOBD-II system also assists a servicetechnician in properly servicing your vehicle.
When the service engine soonindicator illuminates, the OBD-IIsystem has detected a malfunction.Temporary malfunctions may cause theservice engine soon indicator to illuminate.Examples are:
1. Your vehicle has run out of fuel—theengine may misfire or run poorly.
2.Poor fuel quality or water in the fuel—theengine may misfire or run poorly.
3. The fuel fill inlet may not have closedproperly. See Refueling (page 180).
4. Driving through deep water—theelectrical system may be wet.
You can correct these temporarymalfunctions by filling the fuel tank with goodquality fuel, properly closing the fuel fill inletor letting the electrical system dry out. Afterthree driving cycles without these or anyother temporary malfunctions present, theservice engine soon indicator should stay offthe next time you start the engine. A drivingcycle consists of a cold engine startupfollowed by mixed city and highway driving.No additional vehicle service is required.

GENERAL INFORMATION
WARNING: This battery pack shouldonly be serviced by an authorized electricvehicle technician. Improper handling canresult in personal injury or death.
Note:The high-voltage battery does notrequire regular service maintenance.
Your vehicle consists of various high-voltagecomponents and wiring. All of thehigh-voltage power flows through specificwiring assemblies which are labeled as suchor are covered with a solid orange convolute,or orange striped tape, or both. Do not comein contact with these components.
The high-voltage battery system is ahigh-voltage, lithium-ion battery system. Thepack is located in the rear cargo area. Thehigh-voltage battery system uses an aircooled system to regulate the high-voltagebattery temperature and help maximizehigh-voltage battery life.
Note:The high-voltage battery is equippedwith air vents in the package tray that helpto regulate its temperature. It is important tokeep these openings free of obstructions.Do not block the flow of cabin air to thisarea.
HIGH-VOLTAGE SERVICEDISCONNECT
The high-voltage service disconnect shutsoff power from the high-voltage battery.
Note:There is a disconnect circuit in yourvehicle. Disconnecting the circuit disablesthe high-voltage battery.
To disable the battery and stop allhigh-voltage electric activity in your vehicle,access the high-voltage disconnect circuit.
The high-voltage service disconnect islocated behind the rear fold down seats.
Note:The service disconnect has an outerlever to aid in the proper seating of theservice disconnect lever. Remove this todisconnect the high-voltage servicedisconnect.
Disabling the High-Voltage Battery
1. Fold down the rear seats.

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
WARNING: Always fully apply theparking brake. Make sure you shift into park(P) for vehicles with an automatictransmission. Switch the ignition off andremove the key whenever you leave yourvehicle.
WARNING: Do not apply the brakepedal and accelerator pedal simultaneously.Applying both pedals simultaneously formore than a few seconds will limit engineperformance, which may result in difficultymaintaining speed in traffic and could leadto serious injury.
Note:The ready to drive indicator may beoff and you may not be able to shift out ofpark (P), unless the intelligent access key isinside your vehicle.
Push Button Shift Transmission
Your vehicle is equipped with an electronictransmission. The shift buttons are locatedon the instrument panel. Select the gears bypressing and releasing the PRNDL buttons.

Drive (D) with Grade Assist
Activate grade assist through theinformation display settings menu.See General Information (page110).
Grade assist:
•Provides additional grade braking with acombination of engine motoring andhigh-voltage battery charging to helpmaintain vehicle speed when descendinga grade.
•As your vehicle determines the amountof engine motoring and high-voltagebattery charging, you may notice theengine speed increasing and decreasingto help maintain your vehicle speed whendescending a grade.
The grade assist lamp illuminatesgrey when the grade assist featureis switched on through theinstrument display settings menu. The lampchanges from grey to green when gradeassist is actively providing additional gradebraking.
Low (L)
•Provides maximum engine braking.
•The transmission may be put into low (L)at any vehicle speed.
•Not intended for use under extended ornormal driving conditions and results inlower fuel economy.
Brake-Shift Interlock Override
WARNING: Do not drive your vehicleuntil you verify that the stoplamps areworking.
WARNING: When doing this procedure,you need to take the transmission out of park(P) which means your vehicle can roll freely.To avoid unwanted vehicle movement,always fully apply the parking brake prior todoing this procedure. Use wheels chocks ifappropriate.
WARNING: If the parking brake is fullyreleased, but the brake warning lampremains illuminated, the brakes may not beworking properly. Have your vehicle checkedas soon as possible.
Note:See your authorized dealer as soonas possible if this procedure is used.
Note:For some markets this feature isdisabled.
Note:This feature only functions if your12-volt battery has power. If vehicle batteryvoltage is not sufficient, an external 12-voltpower source (for example, jumper cables,battery charger or jump pack) may berequired to function the interlock overrideswitch.
Use the brake-shift interlock override tomove your transmission from the parkposition in the event of an electricalmalfunction. If your vehicle has a deadbattery, an external power source is required.
1. Apply the parking brake and turn yourignition off before performing thisprocedure.
