4. Insert the belt tongue into the properbuckle (the buckle closest to the directionthe tongue is coming from) for thatseating position until you hear a snap andfeel the latch engage. Make sure thetongue is latched securely by pulling onit.
5. To put the retractor in the automaticlocking mode, grasp the lap portion ofthe inflatable seatbelt and pull upwarduntil you pull all of the belt out.
Note:The automatic locking mode isavailable on the front passenger and rearseats.
Note:Unlike the standard seatbelt, theinflatable seatbelt's unique lap portion locksthe child restraint for installation. The abilityfor the shoulder portion of the belt to movefreely is normal, even after the lap belt hasbeen put into the automatic locking mode.
Note:The lock-off device on some childrestraints may not accommodate theshoulder portion of the inflatable seatbelt.Follow all instructions provided by themanufacturer of the child restraint regardingthe necessary and proper use of the lock-offdevice. In some instances, these deviceshave been provided only for use in vehicleswith seatbelt systems that would otherwiserequire a locking clip.
6.Allow the belt to retract to remove slack.The belt clicks as it retracts to indicate itis in the automatic locking mode.
7.Try to pull the belt out of the retractor tomake sure the retractor is in theautomatic locking mode (you should notbe able to pull more belt out). If theretractor is not locked, unbuckle the beltand repeat Steps 5 and 6.

8. Remove remaining slack from the belt.Force the seat down with extra weight,for example, by pressing down orkneeling on the child restraint whilepulling down on the lap belt in order toforce slack from the belt. This isnecessary to remove the remaining slackthat exists once the extra weight of thechild is added to the child restraint. It alsohelps to achieve the proper snugness ofthe child restraint to your vehicle.Sometimes, a slight lean toward thebuckle will additionally help to removeremaining slack from the belt.
9. Attach the tether strap (if the childrestraint is equipped).
10. Before placing the child in the seat,forcibly move the seat forward and backto make sure the seat is securely heldin place. To check this, grab the seat atthe belt path and attempt to move itside to side and forward and back.There should be no more than 1 in(2.5 cm) of movement for properinstallation.
We recommend checking with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger Safety Technicianto make certain the child restraint is properlyinstalled. In Canada, check with TransportCanada for referral to a Child Car Seat Clinic.
Using Lower Anchors and Tethers for
CHildren (LATCH)
WARNING: Do not attach two childsafety restraints to the same anchor. In acrash, one anchor may not be strongenough to hold two child safety restraintattachments and may break, causingserious injury or death.
The LATCH system is composed of threevehicle anchor points: two lower anchorswhere the vehicle seatback and seat cushionmeet (called the seat bight) and one toptether anchor behind that seating position.

LATCH compatible child safety seats havetwo rigid or webbing mounted attachmentsthat connect to the two lower anchors at theLATCH equipped seating positions in yourvehicle. This type of attachment methodeliminates the need to use seatbelts to attachthe child restraint. However, you can still usethe seatbelt to attach the child restraint if thelower anchors are not used. Forforward-facing child restraints, you must alsoattach the top tether strap to the proper toptether anchor if a top tether strap has beenprovided with your child restraint. Werecommend the use of a child safety seathaving a top tether strap. See Using TetherStraps in this chapter.
Your vehicle has LATCH lower anchors forchild restraint installation at the seatingpositions marked with the child restraintsymbol.

The LATCH anchors are at the rear sectionof the rear seat between the cushion andseatback, below the locator symbols on theseatback. Follow the child restraintmanufacturer’s instructions to properly installa child restraint with LATCH attachments.
The locator symbols are on round plasticbuttons for the center seat and onrectangular tags for the outboard seats.
Follow the instructions on attaching childsafety seats with tether straps. See UsingTether Straps in this chapter.
Attach LATCH lower attachments of the childrestraint only to the anchors shown.

Each time you use the safety seat, check thatthe seat is properly attached to the loweranchors and tether anchor, if applicable. Tugthe child restraint from side to side andforward and back where it is secured to thevehicle. The seat should move less than oneinch when you do this for a properinstallation.
If the safety seat is not anchored properly,the risk of a child being injured in a crashgreatly increases.
Combining Seatbelt and LATCH LowerAnchors for Attaching Child SafetySeats
When used in combination, either theseatbelt or the LATCH lower anchors maybe attached first, provided a properinstallation is achieved. Attach the tetherstrap afterward, if included with the childrestraint.
Using Tether Straps
Many forward-facing child safety seatsinclude a tether strap which extends fromthe back of the child safety seat and hooksto an anchoring point called the top tetheranchor. Tether straps are available as anaccessory for many older safety seats.Contact the manufacturer of your childrestraint for information about ordering atether strap, or to obtain a longer tether strapif the tether strap on your safety seat doesnot reach the appropriate top tether anchorin the vehicle.
Some of the rear seats of your vehicle havebuilt-in tether strap anchors behind the seatsas described below.

Attach the tether strap only to theappropriate tether anchor as shown. Thetether strap may not work properly ifattached somewhere other than the correcttether anchor.
Once the child safety seat has been installedusing either the seatbelt, the lower anchorsof the LATCH system, or both, you can attachthe top tether strap.
If you install a child restraint with rigid LATCHattachments, do not tighten the tether strapenough to lift the child restraint off thevehicle seat cushion when the child is seatedin it. Keep the tether strap just snug withoutlifting the front of the child restraint. Keepingthe child restraint just touching the vehicleseat gives the best protection in a severecrash.
Perform the following steps to install a childsafety seat with tether anchors:

If your child restraint system has a tetherstrap and the child restraint manufacturerrecommends its use, we also recommend itsuse.
BOOSTER SEATS
WARNING: Do not put the shouldersection of the seatbelt or allow the child toput the shoulder section of the seatbeltunder their arm or behind their back.Failure to follow this instruction couldreduce the effectiveness of the seatbeltand increase the risk of injury or death ina crash.
Note:Some booster seat seatbelt guidesmay not accommodate the shoulder portionof the inflatable seatbelt.
Use a belt-positioning booster seat forchildren who have outgrown or no longerproperly fit in a child safety seat (generallychildren who are less than 57 in (1.45 m) tall,are greater than age four (4) and less thanage twelve (12), and between 40 lb (18 kg)
and 80 lb (36 kg) and upward to 100 lb(45 kg) if recommended by your childrestraint manufacturer). Many state andprovincial laws require that children useapproved booster seats until they reach ageeight, a height of 57 in (1.45 m) tall, or 80 lb(36 kg).
Booster seats should be used until you cananswer YES to ALL of these questions whenseated without a booster seat:
•Can the child sit all the way back againsttheir vehicle seat backrest with kneesbent comfortably at the edge of the seatcushion?
•Can the child sit without slouching?
•Does the lap belt rest low across thehips?
•Is the shoulder belt centered on theshoulder and chest?
•Can the child stay seated like this for thewhole trip?
Always use booster seats in conjunction withyour vehicle lap and shoulder belt.
Types of Booster Seats

If your backless booster seat has aremovable shield, remove the shield. If avehicle seating position has a low seatbackrest or no head restraint, a backlessbooster seat may place your child's head (asmeasured at the tops of the ears) above thetop of the seat. In this case, move thebackless booster to another seating positionwith a higher seat backrest or head restraintand lap and shoulder belts, or consider usinga high back booster seat.
•High back booster seats
If, with a backless booster seat, you cannotfind a seating position that adequatelysupports your child's head, a high backbooster seat would be a better choice.
Children and booster seats vary in size andshape. Choose a booster that keeps the lapbelt low and snug across the hips, never upacross the stomach, and lets you adjust theshoulder belt to cross the chest and restsnugly near the center of the shoulder. Thefollowing drawings compare the ideal fit(center) to a shoulder belt uncomfortablyclose to the neck and a shoulder belt thatcould slip off the shoulder. The drawings alsoshow how the lap belt should be low andsnug across the child's hips.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
WARNING: Always drive and ridewith your seatback upright and the lap beltsnug and low across the hips.
WARNING: Children must always beproperly restrained.
WARNING: Never let a passengerhold a child on his or her lap while thevehicle is moving. The passenger cannotprotect the child from injury in a crash.
WARNING: All occupants of yourvehicle, including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their seatbelts, even whenan airbag supplemental restraint system isprovided. Failure to properly wear yourseatbelt could seriously increase the riskof injury or death.
WARNING: It is extremely dangerousto ride in a cargo area, inside or outside ofa vehicle. In a crash, people riding in theseareas are more likely to be seriouslyinjured or killed. Do not allow people toride in any area of your vehicle that is notequipped with seats and seatbelts. Makesure everyone in your vehicle is in a seatand properly using a seatbelt. Failure tofollow this warning could result in seriouspersonal injury or death.
WARNING: In a rollover crash, anunbelted person is significantly more likelyto die than a person wearing a seatbelt.
WARNING: Each seating position inyour vehicle has a specific seatbeltassembly made up of one buckle and onetongue designed to be used as a pair. Usethe shoulder belt on the outside shoulderonly. Never wear the shoulder belt underthe arm. Never use a single seatbelt formore than one person.
WARNING: Even with advancedrestraints systems, properly restrainchildren 12 and under in a rear seatingposition. Failure to follow this couldseriously increase the risk of injury ordeath.
WARNING: Seatbelts and seats maybe hot in a vehicle that is in the sunshine.The hot seatbelts or seats may burn a smallchild. Check seat covers and bucklesbefore you place a child anywhere nearthem.
All seating positions in your vehicle have lapand shoulder seatbelts. All occupants of thevehicle should always properly wear theirseatbelts, even when an airbag supplementalrestraint system is provided.
The seatbelt system consists of:
•Lap and shoulder seatbelts.
•Shoulder seatbelt with automatic lockingmode, (except driver seatbelt and rearinflatable seatbelt).

The seatbelt pretensioners and rearinflatable seatbelts are designed to activatein frontal, near-frontal and side crashes, andin rollovers. The seatbelt pretensioners atthe front seating positions are designed totighten the seatbelts firmly against the
occupant’s body when activated. This helpsincrease the effectiveness of the seatbelts.In frontal crashes, the seatbelt pretensionerscan be activated alone or, if the crash is ofsufficient severity, together with the frontairbags.
FASTENING THE SEATBELTS

The front outboard and rear safety restraintsin the vehicle are combination lap andshoulder belts.
1.Insert the seatbelt tongue into the properbuckle (the buckle closest to the directionthe tongue is coming from) until you heara snap and feel it latch. Make sure yousecurely fasten the tongue in the buckle.
2. To unfasten, press the release buttonand remove the tongue from the buckle.
