USING FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE
Note:For important information regardingsafe operation of this type of vehicle, seeGeneral Information in the Wheels and Tireschapter.
Note:Do not use SLIPPERY, DEEPCONDITIONS or SLOW CLIMB on dry, hardsurfaced roads. Doing so producesexcessive noise, increases tire wear and maydamage drive components. The 4X4 systemin these modes is only intended forconsistently slippery or loose surfaces.
Note:If you select a drive mode that uses4L when your vehicle is moving above 3 mph(5 km/h), the 4WD system does not performa shift. This is normal and should be noreason for concern. Refer to Shifting to orfrom 4L for proper operation.
4X4 Indicator Lights
4X2
Momentarily illuminates when youstart the vehicle or when a drivemode that uses 2H is selected.
4X4 AUTO
Continuously illuminates when adrive mode that uses 4A isselected.
4X4 HIGH
Continuously illuminates when adrive mode that uses 4H isselected.
4X4 LOW
Continuously illuminates when adrive mode that uses 4L isselected.
CHECK 4X4
Displays when a 4X4 fault ispresent.
Note:When a 4X4 system fault is present,the system typically remains in whichever4X4 mode was selected prior to the faultcondition occurring. It does not default to4X2 in all circumstances. When this warningis displayed, have your vehicle serviced byan authorized dealer.
4X4 Modes
WARNING: Vehicles with a highercenter of gravity (utility and four-wheeldrive vehicles) handle differently thanvehicles with a lower center of gravity(passenger cars). Avoid sharp turns,excessive speed and abrupt steering inthese vehicles. Failure to drive cautiouslyincreases the risk of losing control of yourvehicle, vehicle rollover, personal injuryand death.

Using the Electric Parking Brake In AnEmergency
WARNING: With the exception ofemergency conditions (for example, thebrake pedal is broken or is blocked), donot apply the electric parking brake whilethe vehicle is moving. On bends, or poorroad surfaces or weather conditions,emergency braking can cause the vehicleto skid out of control or off the road.
Note:Repeated use of the electric parkingbrake to slow the vehicle while moving maycause damage to the brake system.
If there is a problem with the brake pedalwhile driving, you can use the electricparking brake in an emergency to stop thevehicle.
Pull and hold the electric parking brakeswitch while the vehicle is moving to slowyour vehicle. The rear brake lights turn on,a warning lamp illuminates and a warningtone sounds. The vehicle will continue tocome to a stop as long as you pull the switch.When your vehicle speed is below 3 mph(5 km/h), the electric parking brake will beapplied.
Releasing the Electric Parking Brake
You can release the electric parking brakeeither manually by pressing the switch orautomatically.
Note:Do not drive with the parking brakeapplied as this will cause damage to thebrake system. You must manually releasethe electric parking brake by pressing theswitch while pressing the brake pedal.
Manual Release
You can manually release the electric parkingbrake by:
•Switching the ignition on.
•Pressing and holding the brake pedal.
•Pressing the electric parking brakeswitch.
When you release the electric parking brake,the brake system warning lamp turns off.
Automatic Release - Drive Away Release
WARNING: If the brake systemwarning light remains illuminated or flashesfor more than four seconds after you havereleased the parking brake, there could bea problem with your braking system. Haveyour vehicle checked as soon as possible.

When the system is active, your vehicle willremain stationary on the slope for two tothree seconds after you release the brakepedal. This allows you time to move yourfoot from the brake to the accelerator pedal. The brakes release automatically when theengine has sufficient torque to prevent yourvehicle from rolling down the grade. This isan advantage when pulling away on a slope,for example from a car park ramp, trafficlights or when reversing uphill into a parkingspace.
The system will activate automatically on anyslope that will cause significant vehiclerollback. For vehicles with a manualtransmission, you can switch this feature offusing the information display. SeeInformation Displays (page 119). The systemwill remain on or off depending on how itwas last set.
Note:There is no warning lamp to indicatethe system is either on or off.
Note:If your vehicle is equipped with AutoHold, Hill Start Assist will not be availablewhile Auto Hold is active.
Using Hill Start Assist
1. Bring your vehicle to a completestandstill. Keep the brake pedal pressedand select an uphill gear (for example,drive (D) or first (1) when facing uphill orreverse (R) when facing downhill).
2. If the sensors detect that your vehicle ison a slope, the system will activateautomatically.
3. When you remove your foot from thebrake pedal, your vehicle will remain onthe slope without rolling away for abouttwo or three seconds. This hold time willautomatically be extended if you are inthe process of driving off.
4. Drive off in the normal manner. Thebrakes will release automatically.
Switching the System On and Off
You can switch this feature on or off if yourvehicle is equipped with a manualtransmission and an information display. SeeGeneral Information (page 119). The systemremembers the last setting when you startyour vehicle.
If your vehicle is not equipped with a manualtransmission and an information display, youcannot turn the system on or off. When youswitch the ignition on, the systemautomatically turns on.
AUTO HOLD
WARNING: The system does notreplace the parking brake. When you leaveyour vehicle, always apply the parkingbrake.
WARNING: You must remain in yourvehicle when the system turns on. At alltimes, you are responsible for controllingyour vehicle, supervising the system andintervening, if required. Failure to take caremay result in the loss of control of yourvehicle, serious personal injury or death.

WARNING: The system will turn offif a malfunction is apparent. Failure to takecare may result in the loss of control ofyour vehicle, serious personal injury ordeath.
The system uses your vehicle's brakes tohold your vehicle at a standstill after you stopyour vehicle and release the brake pedal.For example, Auto Hold can assist you whilestopping at traffic lights or while in trafficjams by holding the brake pressure for youonce you bring your vehicle to a stop.
Make sure you switch the system off beforetowing with your vehicle.
Note:In case of a malfunction in the systemwhile Auto Hold actively holds the vehicle(for example, low power supply), a messageappears in the information display askingyou to press the brake pedal. If you see thismessage, press the brake pedalimmediately.
Note:The system only activates if itrecognizes it is applying enough brakepressure. On a steep hill or slope, make sureyou press the brake pedal sufficiently toactivate the system.
Note:In some cases, Auto Hold might handover to the parking brake. When the parkingbrake applies, the red brake lamp appears.This is normal. When you press theaccelerator pedal, the drive away releasefeature releases the parking brake.
Note:Auto Hold works on all road grades.
Press the button to switch the system on andoff. The indicator light illuminates when youswitch the system on.
Note:You can only switch the system on ifyou close the door and fasten your seatbelt.
Note:The system turns off every time youpower down your vehicle.
Note:The system remembers the last settingwhen you start your vehicle.
Note:When in reverse (R), Auto Hold doesnot function.
When the system is off, your vehicle behavesthe same as a vehicle without Auto Hold.
There is an indicator lamp in the instrumentcluster that has two modes, active andunavailable:
The auto hold active indicatorilluminates in the informationdisplay when the system holdsyour vehicle stationary. When in active mode,press the brake pedal and the Auto Holdbutton to switch the system off.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The traction control system helps avoid drivewheel spin and loss of traction.
If your vehicle begins to slide, the systemapplies the brakes to individual wheels and,when needed, reduces engine power at thesame time. If the wheels spin whenaccelerating on slippery or loose surfaces,the system reduces engine power in orderto increase traction.
USING TRACTION CONTROL
WARNING: The stability and tractioncontrol light illuminates steadily if thesystem detects a failure. Make sure youdid not manually disable the tractioncontrol system using the informationdisplay controls or the switch. If the stabilitycontrol and traction control light is still
illuminating steadily, have the systemserviced by an authorized dealerimmediately. Operating your vehicle withthe traction control disabled could lead toan increased risk of loss of vehicle control,vehicle rollover, personal injury and death.
The system automatically turns on each timeyou switch the ignition on.
If your vehicle is stuck in mud or snow,switching traction control off may bebeneficial as this allows the wheels to spin.
Note:When you switch traction control off,stability control remains fully active.
Switching the System On and Off
You can switch traction control on and offthrough the information display controls. SeeGeneral Information (page 119).
When you switch the system off, a messageand an illuminated icon appear on theinstrument cluster.
Switch traction control on again to return thesystem to normal operations.
Note:Your vehicle may have MyKeyrestrictions regarding this feature. SeePrinciple of Operation (page 68).
System Indicator Lights and Messages
The stability and traction controllight temporarily illuminates onengine start-up and flashes:
•When a driving condition activates eitherof the systems.
•If a problem occurs in either of thesystems.
The stability and traction controloff light temporarily illuminates onengine start-up and stays on whenyou switch the traction control system off.

Note:The system does not operate in park(P) or reverse (R).
Vehicles with Manual Transmission
The system turns on when all of the followingoccur:
•You start your vehicle.
•The vehicle speed is greater than 6 mph(10 km/h).
Note:The system does not operate inreverse (R).
System Lights and Messages
When the system detects a vehicle, an alertindicator illuminates in the exterior mirror onthe side the approaching vehicle is comingfrom. If you turn the direction indicator on forthat side of your vehicle, the alert indicatorflashes.
Note:The system may not alert you if avehicle quickly passes through the detectionzone.
Blocked Sensors
The sensors are behind the rear bumper onboth sides of your vehicle.
Note:Keep the sensors free from snow, iceand large accumulations of dirt.
Note:Do not cover the sensors with bumperstickers, repair compound or other objects.
Note:Blocked sensors could affect systemperformance.
If the sensors become blocked, a messagemay appear in the information display. SeeInformation Messages (page 124). The alertindicators remain illuminated but the systemdoes not alert you.

System Lights, Messages and AudibleAlerts
When the system detects a vehicle, anindicator illuminates in the exterior mirror onthe side the approaching vehicle is comingfrom. A tone sounds and a message appearsin the information display.
Note:In exceptional conditions, the systemcould alert you even when there is nothingin the detection zone, for example a vehiclepassing in the distance.
Blocked Sensors
The sensors are behind the rear bumper onboth sides of your vehicle.
Note:Keep the sensors free from snow, iceand large accumulations of dirt.
Note:Do not cover the sensors with bumperstickers, repair compound or other objects.
Note:Blocked sensors could affect systemperformance.
If the sensors are blocked, a message mayappear in the information display when youshift into reverse (R). See InformationMessages (page 124).
System Limitations
The system may not correctly operate whenany of the following occur:
•The sensors are blocked.
•Adjacently parked vehicles or objects areobstructing the sensors.
•Vehicles approach at speeds greaterthan 37 mph (60 km/h).
•The vehicle speed is greater than 7 mph(12 km/h).
•You reverse out of an angled parkingspace.
System Errors
If the system detects a fault a messagedisplays. See General Information (page119).
Switching the System Off and On
You can temporarily switch the system offusing the information display. See GeneralInformation (page 119). When you switchsystem off, a message displays. SeeInformation Messages (page 124).

Note:A high crown in the road or highcrosswinds may also make the steeringseem to wander or pull.
Adaptive Learning
The electronic power steering systemadaptive learning helps correct roadirregularities and improves overall handlingand steering feel. It communicates with thebrake system to help operate advancedstability control and accident avoidancesystems. Additionally, whenever the batteryis disconnected or a new battery installed,you must drive your vehicle a short distancebefore the system relearns the strategy andreactivates all systems.
PRE-COLLISION ASSIST
WARNING: You are responsible forcontrolling your vehicle at all times. Thesystem is designed to be an aid and doesnot relieve you of your responsibility todrive with due care and attention. Failureto follow this instruction could result in theloss of control of your vehicle, personalinjury or death.
WARNING: The system does notdetect vehicles that are driving in adifferent direction, cyclists or animals.Failure to take care may result in the lossof control of your vehicle, serious personalinjury or death.
WARNING: The system does notoperate during hard acceleration orsteering. Failure to take care may lead toa crash or personal injury.
WARNING: The system may fail oroperate with reduced function during coldand severe weather conditions. Snow, ice,rain, spray and fog can adversely affect thesystem. Keep the front camera and radarfree of snow and ice. Failure to take caremay result in the loss of control of yourvehicle, serious personal injury or death.
WARNING: In situations where thevehicle camera has limited detectioncapability, this may reduce systemperformance. These situations include butare not limited to direct or low sunlight,vehicles at night without tail lights,unconventional vehicle types, pedestrianswith complex backgrounds, runningpedestrians, partly obscured pedestrians,or pedestrians that the system cannotdistinguish from a group. Failure to takecare may result in the loss of control ofyour vehicle, serious personal injury ordeath.

ESSENTIAL TOWING CHECKS
Follow these guidelines for safe towing:
•Do not tow a trailer until you drive yourvehicle at least 1,000 mi (1,600 km).
•Consult your local motor vehicle laws fortowing a trailer.
•See any instructions that come withtowing accessories for the properinstallation and adjustment specifications.
•Service your vehicle more frequently ifyou tow a trailer. See ScheduledMaintenance (page 552).
•If you use a rental trailer, follow theinstructions the rental agency gives you.
You can find information on loadspecification terms found on the tire labeland Safety Compliance label as well asinstructions on calculating your vehicle's loadin the Load Carrying chapter. See Load Limit(page 293).
Remember to account for the trailer tongueweight as part of your vehicle load whencalculating the total vehicle weight.
Trailer Towing Connector (Vehicleswith a Trailer Towing Package and7–Pin Connector)
When attaching the trailer wiring connectorto your vehicle, only use a proper fittingconnector that works with the vehicle andtrailer functions. Some seven-positionconnectors may have the SAE J2863 logo,which confirms that it is the proper wiringconnector and works correctly with yourvehicle.

Points to Remember
Note:Do not attempt removal of the trailerbrake controller without consulting theWorkshop Manual. Damage to the unit mayresult.
•Adjust gain setting before using thetrailer brake controller for the first time.
•Adjust gain setting, using the procedureabove, whenever road, weather andtrailer or vehicle loading conditionschange from when the gain was initiallyset.
•Only use the manual control lever forproper adjustment of the gain duringtrailer setup. Misuse, such as applicationduring trailer sway, could cause instabilityof trailer or tow vehicle.
•Avoid towing in adverse weatherconditions. The trailer brake controllerdoes not provide anti-lock control of thetrailer wheels. Trailer wheels can lock upon slippery surfaces, resulting in reducedstability of trailer and tow vehicle.
•The trailer brake controller is equippedwith a feature that reduces output atvehicle speeds below 11 mph (18 km/h)so trailer and vehicle braking is not jerkyor harsh. This feature is only availablewhen applying the brakes using yourvehicle's brake pedal, not the controller.
•The controller interacts with the brakecontrol system and powertrain controlsystem of your vehicle to provide thebest performance on different roadconditions.
•Your vehicle's brake system and thetrailer brake system work independentlyof each other. Changing the gain settingon the controller does not affect theoperation of your vehicle's brakeswhether you attach a trailer or not.
•When you switch the engine off, thecontroller output is disabled and thedisplay and module shut down. Thecontroller module and display turn onwhen you switch the ignition on.
•The trailer brake controller is only afactory-installed or dealer-installed item.Lincoln is not responsible for warranty orperformance of the controller due tomisuse or customer installation.
Trailer Lamps
WARNING: Never connect any trailerlamp wiring to the vehicle's tail lamp wiring;this may damage the electrical systemresulting in fire. Contact your authorizeddealer as soon as possible for assistancein proper trailer tow wiring installation.Additional electrical equipment may berequired.
Trailer lamps are required on most towedvehicles. Make sure all running lights, brakelights, turn signals and hazard lights areworking.
