CHILD SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: Always make sure yourchild is secured properly in a device thatis appropriate for their height, age andweight. Child safety restraints must bebought separately from your vehicle.Failure to follow these instructions andguidelines may result in an increased riskof serious injury or death to your child.
WARNING: All children are shapeddifferently. The National Highway TrafficSafety Administration and other safetyorganizations, base their recommendationsfor child restraints on probable child height,age and weight thresholds, or on theminimum requirements of the law. Werecommend that you check with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger SafetyTechnician (CPST) to make sure that youproperly install the child restraint in yourvehicle and that you consult yourpediatrician to make sure you have a childrestraint appropriate for your child. Tolocate a child restraint fitting station and
CPST, contact NHTSA toll free at1-888-327-4236 or go towww.nhtsa.dot.gov. WARNING: On hot days, thetemperature inside the vehicle can risevery quickly. Exposure of people or animalsto these high temperatures for even a shorttime can cause death or serious heatrelated injuries, including brain damage.Small children are particularly at risk.
WARNING: Do not place a rearwardfacing child restraint in front of an activeairbag. Failure to follow this instructioncould result in personal injury or death.
WARNING: Properly secure children12 years old and under in a rear seatingposition whenever possible. If you areunable to properly secure all children in arear seating position, properly secure thelargest child on the front seat. If you mustuse a forward facing child restraint on thefront seat, move the seat as far back aspossible. Failure to follow theseinstructions could result in personal injuryor death.
WARNING: Always carefully followthe instructions and warnings provided bythe manufacturer of any child restraint todetermine if the restraint device isappropriate for your child's size, height,weight, or age. manufacturer. A safety seat that isimproperly installed or utilized, isinappropriate for your child's height, age,or weight or does not properly fit the childmay increase the risk of serious injury ordeath.
WARNING: Do not allow a passengerto hold a child on their lap when yourvehicle is moving. Failure to follow thisinstruction could result in personal injuryor death in the event of a sudden stop orcrash.
WARNING: Do not use pillows, booksor towels to boost your child's height.Failure to follow this instruction could resultin personal injury or death.
WARNING: Properly secure childrestraints or booster seats when they arenot in use. They could become projectilesin a sudden stop or crash. Failure to followthis instruction could result in personalinjury or death.
WARNING: Do not put the shouldersection of the seatbelt or allow the child toput the shoulder section of the seatbeltunder their arm or behind their back.Failure to follow this instruction couldreduce the effectiveness of the seatbeltand increase the risk of injury or death ina crash.
WARNING: Do not leave children orpets unattended in your vehicle. Failure tofollow this instruction could result inpersonal injury or death.
When installing a child restraint withseatbelts:
•Place the vehicle seat in the uprightposition before you install the childrestraint.
•Use the correct seatbelt buckle for thatseating position.
•Insert the belt tongue into the buckle.Make sure the tongue is securelyfastened in the buckle.
•Keep the buckle release button pointingup and away from the child restraint, withthe tongue between the child restraintand the release button, to preventaccidental unbuckling.
•Put the seatbelt in the automatic lockingmode.

INSTALLING CHILD RESTRAINTS
USING SEATBELTS
WARNING: Depending on where yousecure a child restraint, and depending onthe child restraint design, you may blockaccess to certain seatbelt buckleassemblies and LATCH lower anchors,rendering those features potentiallyunusable. To avoid risk of injury, make sureoccupants only use seating positionswhere they are able to be properlyrestrained.
Note:Although the child restraint illustratedis a forward facing child restraint, the stepsare the same for installing a rear facing childrestraint.
Perform the following steps when installinga child restraint with seatbelts.
1.Position the child restraint in a seat witha seatbelt.
2.Pull down on the shoulder belt and thengrasp the shoulder belt and lap belttogether.
3.While holding the shoulder and lap beltportions together, route the tonguethrough the child restraint according tothe child restraint manufacturer'sinstructions. Make sure you did not twistthe belt webbing.
4.Insert the belt tongue into the properbuckle for that seating position until thelatch engages. Make sure the tongue islatched securely by pulling on it.

5.To put the retractor in the automaticlocking mode, grasp the shoulder portionof the belt and pull downward until youpull all of the seatbelt out.
Note:The automatic locking mode isavailable on the front passenger and rearseats. This vehicle does not require the useof a locking clip.
6.Allow the belt to retract to remove slack.The seatbelt clicks as it retracts toindicate it is in the automatic lockingmode.
7.Pull the seatbelt out of the retractor tomake sure the retractor is in theautomatic locking mode. You should notbe able to pull more belt out. If theretractor is not locked, unbuckle the beltand repeat Steps 5 and 6.
8.Remove remaining slack from the belt.Force the seat down with extra weight,for example, by pressing down orkneeling on the child restraint whilepulling up on the shoulder belt in orderto force slack from the belt. This isnecessary to remove the remaining slackthat exists once you add the extra weight
of the child to the child restraint. It alsohelps to achieve the proper snugness ofthe child restraint to your vehicle.Sometimes, a slight lean toward thebuckle helps to remove remaining slackfrom the belt.
9.If the child restraint has a tether strap,attach it.
10.Before placing the child in the seat,forcibly move the seat forward and backto make sure the seat is securely heldin place.

To check this, grab the seat at the belt pathand attempt to move it side to side andforward and back. There should be no morethan 1 in (2.5 cm) of movement.
We recommend checking with a NHTSACertified Child Passenger Safety Technicianto make certain the child restraint is properlyinstalled. In Canada, check with TransportCanada for referral to a Child Car Seat Clinic.
USING LOWER ANCHORS ANDTETHERS FOR CHILDREN
WARNING: Do not attach two childsafety restraints to the same anchor. In acrash, one anchor may not be strongenough to hold two child safety restraintattachments and may break, causingserious injury or death.
WARNING: Depending on where yousecure a child restraint, and depending onthe child restraint design, you may blockaccess to certain seatbelt buckleassemblies and LATCH lower anchors,rendering those features potentiallyunusable. To avoid risk of injury, make sureoccupants only use seating positionswhere they are able to be properlyrestrained.
The Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children(LATCH) system has three vehicle anchorpoints:
•Two lower anchors where the vehicleseat backrest and seat cushion meet,called the seat bight.
•One top tether anchor behind thatseating position.
LATCH compatible child restraints have tworigid or webbing mounted attachments.These attachments connect to the two loweranchors at the LATCH equipped seatingpositions in your vehicle. This type ofattachment method eliminates the need touse seatbelts to attach the child restraint.
However, you can still use the seatbelt toattach the child restraint if the lower anchorsare not used. For forward-facing childrestraints, you must also attach the top tetherstrap to the proper top tether anchor if a toptether strap has been provided with yourchild restraint.
Follow the instructions later in this chapteron attaching child restraints with tetherstraps.

INSTALLING A CHILD RESTRAINT INA CENTER SEAT
WARNING: The standardized spacingfor LATCH lower anchors is 11 in (280 mm)center to center. Do not use LATCH loweranchors for the center seating positionunless the child restraint manufacturer'sinstructions permit and specify usinganchors spaced at least as far apart asthose in this vehicle.
The lower anchors at the center of thesecond row rear seat are spaced 11 in(280 mm) apart. The lower anchors at thecenter of the third row rear seat are spaced19 in (488 mm) apart. The standardizedspacing for LATCH lower anchors is 11 in(280 mm) center to center.
You cannot install a child restraint with rigidLATCH attachments at the center seatingposition. You can only use LATCHcompatible child restraints with attachmentson belt webbing at this seating positionprovided that the child restraintmanufacturer's instructions permit use withthe anchor spacing stated. Do not attach achild restraint to any lower anchor if anotherchild restraint is attached to that anchor.
Each time you use the child restraint, checkthat the seat is properly attached to the loweranchors and tether anchor, if applicable. Tugthe child restraint from side to side andforward and back where it is secured to thevehicle. The seat should move less than 1 in(2.5 cm).
If you did not properly anchor the childrestraint, the risk of a child being injured ina crash greatly increases.
COMBINING THE SEATBELT ANDLOWER ANCHORS FOR ATTACHINGCHILD RESTRAINTS
When used in combination, you may attacheither the seatbelt or the LATCH loweranchors first, provided a proper installationis achieved. Attach the tether strap afterward,if it is included with the child restraint.
USING TETHER STRAPS
Many forward-facing child restraints includea tether strap which extends from the backof the child restraint and hooks to ananchoring point called the top tether anchor.Tether straps are available as an accessoryfor many older child restraints.
Contact the manufacturer of your childrestraint for information about ordering atether strap, or to obtain a longer tether strapif the tether strap on your child restraint doesnot reach the appropriate top tether anchorin the vehicle.

Safety Canopy will be activated, regardlessof which seats are occupied. The SafetyCanopy inflates between the side windowarea and occupants to further enhanceprotection provided in side impact crashesand rollover events.
The system consists of the following:
•Safety Canopy curtain airbags above thetrim panels over the front and rear sidewindows identified by a label or wordingon the headliner or roof-pillar trim.
•A flexible headliner which opens abovethe side doors to allow air curtaindeployment
· Crash sensors and monitoringsystem with a readiness indicator.See Crash Sensors and AirbagIndicator (page 68).
Properly restrain children 12 years old andunder in the rear seats. The Safety Canopywill not interfere with children restrainedusing a properly installed child or boosterseat because it is designed to inflatedownward from the headliner above thedoors along the side window opening.
AIRBAG PRECAUTIONS
WARNING: Airbags do not inflateslowly or gently, and the risk of injury froma deploying airbag is the greatest close tothe trim covering the airbag module.
WARNING: All occupants of yourvehicle, including the driver, should alwaysproperly wear their seatbelts, even whenan airbag supplemental restraint system isprovided. Failure to properly wear yourseatbelt could seriously increase the riskof injury or death.
WARNING: Properly secure children12 years old and under in a rear seatingposition whenever possible. If you areunable to properly secure all children in arear seating position, properly secure thelargest child on the front seat. If you mustuse a forward facing child restraint on thefront seat, move the seat as far back aspossible. Failure to follow theseinstructions could result in personal injuryor death.

WHAT IS 911 ASSIST
911 Assist is a SYNC system feature that cancall for help.
For more information, visitwww.owner.ford.com.
HOW DOES 911 ASSIST WORK
If a crash deploys an airbag, excluding kneeairbags and rear inflatable seatbelts, oractivates the fuel pump shut-off, your vehiclemay be able to contact emergency servicesby dialing 911 through a paired andconnected Bluetooth® enabled phone.
Not all crashes deploy an airbag or activatethe fuel pump shut-off. If a connected cellphone sustains damage or loses itsconnection to SYNC during a crash, SYNCsearches for and tries to connect to apreviously paired cell phone. SYNC thenattempts to call the emergency services.
Before making the call:
•SYNC provides about 10 seconds tocancel the call. If you fail to cancel thecall, SYNC attempts to dial 911.
•SYNC says the following, or a similarmessage: SYNC will attempt to call 911,to cancel the call, press Cancel on yourscreen or press and hold the phonebutton on your steering wheel.
If you do not cancel the call and SYNC makesa successful call a pre-recorded messageplays for the 911 operator. The occupants inyour vehicle are able to talk with theoperator. Be prepared to provide your name,phone number and location immediatelybecause not all 911 systems are capable ofreceiving this information electronically.
During an emergency call the systemtransmits vehicle data to the emergencyservice.
EMERGENCY CALL
REQUIREMENTS
WARNING: Do not wait for 911 Assistto make an emergency call if you can doit yourself. Dial emergency servicesimmediately to avoid delayed responsetime which could increase the risk ofserious injury or death after a crash. If youdo not hear 911 Assist within five secondsof the crash, the system or phone may bedamaged or non-functional.
WARNING: Always place your phonein a secure location in your vehicle so itdoes not become a projectile or getdamaged in a crash. Failure to do so maycause serious injury to someone ordamage the phone which could prevent911 Assist from working properly.
WARNING: Unless the 911 Assistsetting is set on before a crash, the systemwill not dial for help which could delayresponse time, potentially increasing therisk of serious injury or death after a crash.
