should turn off. (A driving cycle consists of a cold engine startup
followed by mixed city/highway driving.) No additional vehicle service is
required.
If the light remains on, have your vehicle serviced at the first available
opportunity.
NOTE:The
CHECK
ENGINElight will illuminate if vehicle refueling is conducted
with the engine running.
WARNING: Never refuel vehicle with the engine running.
Light is blinking:
Engine misfire is occurring which could damage your catalytic converter.
You should drive in a moderate fashion (avoid heavy acceleration and
deceleration) and have your vehicle serviced at the first available
opportunity.
WARNING: Under engine misfire conditions, excessive exhaust
temperatures could damage the catalytic converter, the fuel
system, interior floor coverings or other vehicle components,
possibly causing a fire.
Check gage
Illuminates when the engine coolant
temperature is high, the engine oil
pressure is low or the fuel gauge is
at or near empty. Refer toEngine
coolant temperature gauge, Engine oil pressure gaugeorFuel gauge
in this chapter for more information.
Brake system warning
To confirm the brake system
warning light is functional, it will
momentarily illuminate when the
ignition is turned to the ON position
(alternatively for some vehicles
when the ignition is moved from the ON position to START position, the
light will momentarily illuminate prior to reaching the START position).
It also illuminates if the parking brake is engaged. If the brake system
warning light does not illuminate as described, seek service immediately.
Illumination after the parking brake is released indicates low brake fluid

Engine oil pressure gauge
Indicates engine oil pressure. At
normal operating temperature, the
needle will be in the normal range
(the area between the ªLº and ªHº);
if the needle goes below the
normal range, stop the vehicle as
soon as safely possible and
switch off the engine
immediately.Check the oil level.
Add oil if needed (refer toEngine
oilin theMaintenance and Specificationschapter). If the oil level is
correct, have your vehicle checked by your authorized Mazda dealership.
Battery voltage gauge
Indicates battery voltage.
NOTE:If the pointer moves and
stays outside the normal operating
range (as indicated by arrows), have
the vehicle's electrical system
checked as soon as possible.
Fuel gauge
Displays approximately how much
fuel is in the fuel tank. The fuel
gauge may vary slightly when the
vehicle is in motion or on a grade.
When refueling the vehicle from
empty indication, the amount of fuel
that can be added will be less than
the advertised capacity due to the
reserve fuel.
NOTE:The FUEL DOOR icon and arrow indicates which side of the
vehicle the fuel filler door is located.

PAINT CHIPS
Your dealer has touch-up paint to match your vehicle's color. Touch-up
paint can be used to repair minor scratches to painted surfaces.
²Remove particles such as bird droppings, tree sap, insect deposits, tar
spots, road salt and industrial fallout before repairing paint chips.
²Always read the instructions before using the products.
ALUMINUM WHEELS AND COVERS
Aluminum wheel rims or covers are coated with a clearcoat paint finish.
In order to maintain their shine:
²Clean with One Step Wash and Wax Concentrate, which is available
from your local Mazda dealer.
²Never apply any cleaning chemical to hot or warm wheel rims or
covers.
²Some automatic car washes may cause damage to the finish on your
wheel rims or covers. Chemical-strength cleaners, or cleaning
chemicals, in combination with brush agitation to remove brake dust
and dirt, could wear away the clearcoat finish over time.
²Do not use hydrofluoric acid-based or high caustic-based wheel
cleaners, steel wool, fuels or strong household detergent.
²To remove tar and grease, use Extra Strength Tar and Road Oil
Removal, available from your local Mazda dealer.
ENGINE
Engines are more efficient when they are clean because grease and dirt
buildup keep the engine warmer than normal. When washing:
²Take care when using a power washer to clean the engine. The
high-pressure fluid could penetrate the sealed parts and cause
damage.
²Never spray the engine or other engine components with water. Water
will damage the engine or other engine components.
²Spray Engine Shampoo and Degreaser, available at your local Mazda
dealer, on all parts that require cleaning and pressure rinse clean.
²Cover the highlighted areas to prevent water damage when cleaning
the engine.

²Never wash or rinse the engine while it is running; water in the
running engine may cause internal damage.
PLASTIC (NON-PAINTED) EXTERIOR PARTS
Use only approved products to clean plastic parts. These products are
available from your dealer.
²For routine cleaning, use One Step Wash and Wax Concentrate,
available at your local Mazda dealer.
²If tar or grease spots are present, use Extra Strength Tar and Road Oil
Removal, available at your local Mazda dealer.
CLEANING MIRRORS
Do not clean your mirrors with a dry cloth or abrasive materials. Use a
soft cloth and mild detergent and water. Be careful when removing ice
from outside mirrors because you may damage the reflective surface.
WINDOWS AND WIPER BLADES
The windshield, rear window and wiper blades should be cleaned regularly.
If the wiper does not wipe properly, substances on the windshield, rear
window or the wiper blades may be the cause. These may include hot wax
treatments used by commercial car washes, tree sap, or other organic
contamination. To clean these items, please follow these tips:
²The windshield or rear window may be cleaned with a non-abrasive
cleaner such as Ultra Clear Spray Glass Cleaner, available from your
local Mazda dealer.
²Do not use abrasives, as they may cause scratches.

WARNING: Do not use chemical solvents or strong detergents
when cleaning the seat where the side air bag is mounted. Such
products may contaminate the side air bag system and affect
performance of the side air bag in a collision. The air bag may
not function correctly and not provide any injury reduction
benefits.
LEATHER SEATS (IF EQUIPPED)
Your leather seating surfaces have a clear, protective coating over the
leather.
²To clean, use a soft cloth with Deluxe Leather and Vinyl Cleaner. Dry
the area with a soft cloth.
²To help maintain its resiliency and color, use the Deluxe Leather Care
Kit, available at your local Mazda dealer.
²Do not use household cleaning products, alcohol solutions, solvents or
cleaners intended for rubber, vinyl and plastics, or oil/petroleum-based
leather conditioners. These products may cause premature wearing of
the clear, protective coating.
UNDERBODY
Flush the complete underside of vehicle frequently. Keep body drain
holes unplugged. Inspect for road damage.

SCHEDULE II ± SPECIAL OPERATING CONDITIONS
If your driving habitsFREQUENTLYinclude one or more of the
following conditions:
²Short trips oflessthan 16 km (10 miles) when outside temperatures
remain below freezing.
²Towing a trailer, or carrying maximum loads.
²Operating in severe dust conditions.
²Operating duringhot weatherin stop-and-go ªrush-hourº traffic.
²Extensive idling, such as police, taxi or door-to-door delivery service.
²High speed operation with a fully loaded vehicle (max. GVW).
²Off-road operation.
Change ENGINE OIL AND OIL FILTER every 3 months or 4,800 km
(3,000 miles) whichever occurs first.
NOTE:Idling the engine for extended periods will accumulate more
hours of use on your vehicle than is actually indicated by the mileage
odometer. Consequently, the odometer reading can be often misleading
when determining the right time to change your engine oil and filter. If
you are using your vehicle in a manner which allows it to remain
stationary while the engine is running for long periods (door-to-door
delivery, taxi, police, power/utility company trucks, or similar duty), then
Mazda recommends you increase the frequency of oil and filter changes
to an interval equivalent to 200 ENGINE HOURS of use. Since most
vehicles are not equipped with hour-meters, it may be necessary for you
to approximate your idle time and plan oil/filter changes accordingly.
