If you slow down or stop withou tshifting
down, the automatic transmission
automatically shifts down.
i For maximum acceleration, pull the left-
hand steering wheel paddle shifter until the
transmission selects the optimum gear for
the current speed.
i If the engine exceeds the maximum
engine speed when shifting down, the
automatic transmission protectsa gainst
engine damage by not shifting down.
Kickdown You can also use kickdown for maximum
acceleration in manual drive program
M.
X Depress the accelerator pedal beyond the
pressure point.
The automatic transmission shifts to a
lower gear depending on the engine speed.
X Shift back up once the desired speed is
reached.
i During kickdown, you cannot change gear
using the steering wheel paddle shifters.
i If you apply full throttle, the automatic
transmission shifts up to the next gear
when the maximum engine speed is
reached. This prevents the engine from
overrevving.

This is dependent on the position of the
accelerator pedal, speed and load. Automatic transmission

WARNING
Fuel is highly flammable. If you handle fuel
incorrectly, there is arisk of fire and
explosion.
You must avoid fire, open flames, creating
sparks and smoking. Switch off the engine
and, if applicable, the auxiliary heating before
refueling. G
WARNING
Fuel is poisonous and hazardous to health.
There is arisk of injury.
You must make sure that fuel does not come
into contact with your skin, eyes or clothing
and that it is not swallowed. Do not inhale fuel
vapors. Keep fuel away from children.
If you or others come into contact with fuel,
observe the following:
R Wash away fuel from skin immediately
using soap and water.
R If fuel comes into contact with your eyes,
immediately rinse them thoroughly with clean water. Seek medical assistance
without delay.
R If fuel is swallowed, seek medical
assistance without delay.Don ot induce
vomiting.
R Immediately change out of clothin gwhich
has come into contact with fuel. G
WARNING
Electrostatic buildu pcan create sparks and
ignite fuel vapors. There is arisk of fire and
explosion.
Always touch the vehicle body before opening
the fuel filler flap or touching the fuel pump
nozzle. Any existin gelectrostatic buildu pis
thereby discharged.
! Do not use diesel to refuel vehicles with a
gasoline engine. Do not switch on the
ignition if you accidentally refuel with the
wrong fuel. Otherwise, the fuel will enter
the fuel system. Even small amounts of the
wrong fuel could result in damage to the
fuel system and the engine. Notify a
qualified specialist workshop and have the
fuel tank and fuel lines drained completely. 150

Overfilling the fuel tank could damage the
fuel system.
! Take care not to spill any fuel on painted
surfaces. You could otherwise damage the
paintwork.
! Use afilter when refueling from afuel can.
Otherwise, the fuel lines and/or injection
system could be blocked by particles from
the fuel can.
Do not get into the vehicle againd uringthe
refuelin gprocess. Otherwise, electrostatic
charge could build up again.
If you overfill th efuel tank, fuel could spray
out when th efuel pump nozzle is removed.

The fuel filler flap is unlocked or locked
automatically when you open or close the
vehicl ewitht he SmartKey.
The position of th efuel filler cap is displayed
0007 in theinstrumen tcluster .The arrow on
the filling pump indicates the side of the
vehicle. Opening X
Switch the engine off.
X Remove the SmartKey from the ignition
lock.
X Press the fuel filler flap in the direction of
arrow 001A.
The fuel filler flap swings up.
X Turn the fuel filler flap counter-clockwise
and remove it.
X Insert the fuel filler cap into holder on the
inside of fuel filler flap 0023.
X Completely insert the filler neck of the fuel
pump nozzle into the tank,h ook in place
and refuel.
X Only fill the tank until the pump nozzle
switches off.
i Do not add any more fuel after the pump
stops filling for the first time. Otherwise,
fuel may leak out.
Closing X
Replace the cap on the filler neck and turn
clockwise until it engages audibly.
X Close the fuel filler flap.
i Close the fuel filler flap before locking the
vehicle.
i If you are driving with the fuel filler cap
open, the 0007reserve fuel warning lamp
flashes. Amessage appears in the
multifunction display (Y page 225).
In addition, the 000ACheck Engine warning
lamp may light up (Y page 245).

indicator lamps in the instrument cluster,

Problems with fuel and the fuel tank

and remove it (Y page 137).

X Consult aqualified specialist workshop. The fuel filler flap
cannot be opened. The fuel filler flap is not unlocked.

The SmartKey battery is discharged.

Unlock the vehicle (Y page 74).

X Unlock the vehicle using the mechanical key (Y page 75).The fuel filler flap is unlocked, but the opening mechanism is
jammed.

WARNING
Flammable material such as leaves, grass or
twigs may ignite if they come into contact with
hot parts of the exhaust system or exhaust
gas flow. There is arisk of fire.
Park the vehicle so that no flammable
materials come into contact with parts of the
vehicle which are hot. Take particular care not
to park on dry grassland or harvested grain
fields. G
WARNING
If you leave children unsupervised in the
vehicle, they could set it in motion by, for
example:
R releasing the parking brake
R shifting the automatic transmission out of
the parking position P
R startingt he engine.
They could also operate the vehicle's
equipment. There is arisk of an accident and
injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children unsupervised in the vehicle.
! Always secure the vehicle correctly
against rolling away.O therwise, the vehicle
or its drivetrai ncould be damaged. 152

To ensure that the vehicle is secured against
rolling away unintentionally:
R the electric parking brake must be applied.
R the transmission must be in position Pand
the transmission position display must
show P.
R the SmartKey must be removed from the
ignition lock.
R on uphill or downhill gradients, the front
wheels must be turned towards the curb. Switching off the engine

WARNING
The automatic transmission switches to
neutral position Nwhen you switch off the
engine. The vehicle may roll away.T here is a
risk of an accident.
After switching off the engine, always switch
to parking position P.Prevent the parked
vehicle from rolling away by applying the
parking brake.
Vehicles with automatic transmission X
Apply the electric parking brake.
X Shift the transmission to position P.
X Turn the SmartKey to position 0in the
ignition lock and remove it.
The immobilizer is activated.
i If you switch the engine off with the
transmission in position Ror D,t he
automatic transmission shifts to N
automatically.
If you then open one of the front doors or
remove the SmartKey from the ignition, the
automatic transmission shifts to P.
If you shift the automatic transmission to
N before switching off the engine, the
automatic transmission remains in Neven
if ad oor is opened. i
The automatic transmission shifts to P
automatically if you:
R switch off the engine using the SmartKey
and remove the SmartKey from the
ignition lock or
R switch off the engine using the SmartKey
and open afront door.
If you attempt to turn off the engine when the
selector lever is not in position P:
R am essage appears in the multifunction

The electric parking brake performs a
function test at regular intervals while the Parking

be heard while this is occurring are normal.
Applying/releasing manually Applying

When the electric parkin gbrake is
engaged, the 000Ared indicator lamp lights
up in the instrument cluster.
i The electric parkin gbrake can also be
applied when the SmartKey is removed.
Releasing
X Pull handle 001A.
The red 000Aindicator lamp in the
instrument cluster goes out.
i You can only release the electric parking
brake when the SmartKey is in position 1
or 2in the ignition lock.
Applying automatically The electric parkin
gbrake is applied
automatically:
R if DISTRONIC PLUS brings the vehicle to a
standstill or
R if the HOLD function is keeping the vehicle
stationary
In addition, at least one of the following
conditions must be fulfilled:
R the engin eisswitched off.
R the driver's door is open and the seat belt
is not fastened.
R ther eisas ystem malfunction.
R the power supply is insufficient.
R the vehicle is stationary for alengthy
period.
The red 000Aindicator lamp in the instrument
cluster lights up.
i The electric parkin gbrake is not
automatically engaged if the engin eis
switched off by the ECO start/stop
function. Releasing automatically Your vehicle's electric parkin
gbrake is
automatically released if all of the following
conditions are met:
R the engin eisrunning.
R the transmission is in position Dor R.
R the seat belt has been fastened.
R you depress the accelerator pedal.
If the transmission is in position R,the tailgate
must be closed.
If your seat belt is not fastened, the following
conditions must be fulfilled to automatically
release the electric parkin gbrake:
R the driver's door is closed.
R you have shifted out of transmission
position Por you have previousl ydriven
faster than 2mph (3 km/h).
Emergency braking The vehicl
ecan alsobeb raked during an
emergency by using the electric parking
brake.
X Whil edriving, pushh andle001Aof the electric
parking brake (Y page153).
i The vehicl eisbraked for as long as
handle 001Aof the electric parking brake is
pressed. The longer electric parking brake

braking force.

Parking the vehicle for
along period
If you leave th evehicle parked for longer than
four weeks, th ebattery may be damage dby
exhaustive discharging.
If you leave th evehicle parked for longer than
six weeks, th evehicle may suffer damage as
ar esult of lack of use.

General notes
Important safety notes G
WARNING
If you switch off th eignitio nwhile driving,
safety-relevant functions are only available
with limitations, or not at all. This could affect,
for example, the power steering and the brake
boosting effect.Y ou will require considerably
more effort to steer and brake. There is arisk
of an accident.
Do not switch off the ignition while driving. G
WARNING
If you operate mobile communication
equipment while driving, you will be
distracted from traffic conditions. You could
also lose control of the vehicle. There is arisk
of an accident.
Only operate this equipment when the vehicle
is stationary.
Observe the legal requirements for the
country in which you are driving. Some
jurisdiction sprohibit the driver from using a
mobile phone while driving avehicle.
If you make acall while driving, always use
hands-free mode. Only operate the telephone
when the traffic situation permits. If you are unsure, pull over to
asafe location and stop
before operating the telephone.
Bear in mind that at aspeed of only 30 mph
(approximately 50 km/h) ,the vehicle covers
ad istance of 44 ft (approximately 14 m) per
second.
Drive sensibly –save fuel Observe the following tips to save fuel:
R The tires should always be inflated to the
recommended tire pressure.
R Remove unnecessary loads.
R Remove roof racks whe nthey are not
needed.
R Warm up the engine at low engine speeds.
R Avoid frequent acceleration or braking.
R Have all maintenancew ork carried out as
indicated by the service intervals in the
MaintenanceB ooklet or by the service
interval display.
Fuel consumption also increases when
driving in cold weather, in stop-start traffic
and in hilly terrain.
Drinking and driving G
WARNING
Drinking and driving and/or taking drugs and
driving are very dangerous combinations.
Even asmall amount of alcohol or drugs can
affect your reflexes, perceptions and
judgment.
The possibility of aserious or even fatal
accident is greatly increased when you drink
or take drugs and drive.
Do not drink or take drugs and drive or allow
anyone to drive who has been drinking or
taking drugs.
Emission control G
WARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbon monoxide. Inhaling
these exhaust gases leads to poisoning. There Driving tips

ar isk of fatal injury. Therefor enever leave
the engin erunning in enclosed spaces
without sufficient ventilation.
Certain engin esystems are designed to keep
the level of poisonous component sinexhaust
fumes within legal limits.
These systems only work at peak efficienc yif
the yare serviced exactly in accordance with
the manufacturer' sspecifications .For this
reason ,only have work on the engin ecarried
out by qualified and authorized Mercedes-
Ben ztechnicians.
The engin esettings must not be changed
under any circumstances. Furthermore, all
specific service work must be carried out at
regular intervals and in accordance with the
Mercedes-Ben zservice requirements. Details
can be found in the Maintenance Booklet. ECO display
The ECO display gives you information on how
economical your driving style is. The ECO
display assists you in achieving the optimum
driving style in term sofconsumption ,taking
the actual and selected conditions into
consideration .Your driving style can
significantly influence the vehicle's
consumption. Example: ECO display (color multifunction display)
The ECO display consist softhree bars:
R Acceleration R
Constant R
Coasting The percent value is the average value of the
three bars. The three bars and the mean value
begin at the value of 50%. Ahigher percentage indicates
amoree conomical
driving style.
The ECO display doe snot indicate the actual
fue lconsumption and afixe dp ercentage
count in the ECO display doe snot indicate a
fixe dconsumption figure.
Apart from driving style, consumption is
dependent on many factors such as ,e.g.:
R load
R tire pressure
R cold start
R choice of route
R electrical consumers switched on
These factors are not taken into
consideration by the ECO display.
The evaluation of your driving styl eiscarried
ou tu sing the following three categories:
R Acceleration (evaluation of all
acceleration processes):
- The bar fills up: moderate acceleration,
especially at higher speeds
- The bar empties: sporty acceleration
R Constant (assessment of driving behavior
at all times):
- The bar fills up: constant speed and
avoidance of unnecessary acceleration
and deceleration
- The bar empties: fluctuations in speed
R Coasting (assessment of all deceleration
processes):
- The bar fills up: anticipatory driving,
keeping your distance and early release
of the accelerator. The vehicle can coast
without use of the brakes.
- The bar empties: frequent braking
i An economical driving style specially
requires driving at moderate engine
speeds.

On long journeys at aconstant speed, e.g.
on the highway, only the bar for Constantwill change.
i The ECO displays ummaries the driving
characteristics from the start of the journey
to its completion. For this reason, the bars
change dynamically at the beginning of the
journey. On longer journeys, there are
fewer changes. For more dynamic changes,
carry out amanual reset.

Important safety notes G
WARNING
If you shift down on aslippery road surface in
an attempt to increase the engine's braking
effect, the drive wheels could lose their grip.
There is an increased danger of skidding and
accidents.
Do not shift down for additional engine
braking on aslippery road surface.
Downhill gradients !
On long and steep gradients, you must
reduce the load on the brakes by shifting to
al ower gear in good time. This allows you
to take advantage of the engine's braking
effect. For this, you need to have selected
manual drive program M.This helps you to
avoid overheating the brakes and wearing
them out excessively.
When you take advantage of the engine's
braking effect,ad rive wheel may not turn
for some time, e.g. on aslippery road
surface. This could cause damage to the
drive train. This type of damage is not
covered by the Mercedes-Ben zwarranty.
i Briefl ydepressing th eaccelerato rpedal
on downhill gradient swhile the manual
drive program Mis temporarily activated:
the automatic transmission may switch to the last activ
eautomatic drive program E
or S.T he automatic transmission may shift
to ah igher gear. This can reduce the
engine's braking effect.
Heavy and light loads G
WARNING
If you rest your foot on the brake pedal while
driving, the braking system can overheat. This
increases the stopping distance and can even
cause the braking system to fail. There is a
risk of an accident.
Never use the brake pedal as afootrest .Never
depress the brake pedal and the accelerator
pedal at the same time.
! Depressing the brake pedal constantly
results in excessive and premature wear to
the brake pads.
If the brakes have been subjected to aheavy
load, do not stop the vehicle immediately.
Driv eonf oras hort while. This allows the
airflow to cool the brakes more quickly.
Wet roads If you have driven for
along time in heavy rain
without braking ,there may be adelayed
reaction from the brakes when braking for the
first time. This may also occur after the
vehicle has been washed or driven through
deep water.
You have to depress the brake pedal more
firmly. Maintain agreater distanc efrom the
vehicle in front.
After driving on awet road or having the
vehicle washed, brake firmly while paying
attention to the traffic conditions .This will
warm up the brake discs, thereby drying them
more quickly and protecting them against
corrosion.
Limited braking performance on salt-
treated roads If you drive on salted roads,
alayer of salt
residue may form on the brake discs and Driving tips

brake pads. This can result in
asignificantly
longer brakin gdistance.
R Brak eoccasionally to remov eany possible
salt residue. Make sure that you do not
endanger other road users when doing so.
R Carefully depress the brake pedal and the
beginning and end of ajourney.
R Maintain agreater distance to the vehicle
ahead.
Servicing the brakes !
If the red brake warning lamp lights up in
the instrument cluster and you hear a
warning ton ewhile the engin eisrunning,
the brake fluid level may be too low.
Observ eadditional warning messages in
the multifunction display.
The brake fluid level may be too low due to
brake pad wear or leaking brake lines.
Have the brake system checked
immediately. This work should be carried
out at aqualified specialist workshop.
! Afunction or performanc etest should
only be carried out on a2-axle
dynamometer. If yo uareplanning to have
the vehicl eteste dons uchad ynamometer,
contact an authorize dMercedes-Benz
Center to obtai nfurthe rinformatio nfirst.
Otherwise, yo ucould damage the drive
trai nort he brake system.
! As the ESP ®
system operates
automatically, the engine and the ignition
must be switched off (the SmartKe ymust
be in position 0or 1in the ignition lock) if:
R the electri cparking brak eistested on a
brake dynamometer (for amaximum of
ten seconds)
R the vehicle is towed with the front axle
raised.
Braking triggered automaticallybyE SP®
may seriouslyd amage the brake system.
All checks and maintenance work on the
brake system must be carried out at a qualified specialist workshop. Consult a
qualified specialist workshop to arrange this.
Have brake pads installed and brake fluid
replaced at
aqualified specialist workshop.
If the brake system has only been subject to
moderate loads, you should test the
functionality of your brakes at regular
intervals.
You can find adescription of Brake Assist
(BAS) on (Y page 64).
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you only
have brake pads/linings installed on your
vehicle which have been approved for
Mercedes-Benz vehicles or which correspond
to an equivalent quality standard. Brake
pads/linings which have not been approved
for Mercedes-Benz vehicles or which are not
of an equivalent quality could affect your
vehicle's operating safety.
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you only
use brake fluid that has been specially
approved for your vehicle by Mercedes-Benz,
or which corresponds to an equivalent quality
standard. Brake fluid which has not been
approved for Mercedes-Benz vehicles or
which is not of an equivalent quality could
affect your vehicle's operating safety.
Checking brake liningt hickness You can measure the break pad/lining
thickness using
atest gauge.C olor-coding
(green or red) on the test gauge allows you to
determin ewhether the brake pad/lining
thickness is still sufficient .The test gauge is
in the vehicle document wallet in the glove
