Immobilizer

GWARNING

SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children or animals unattended in the
vehicle. Always keep the SmartKey out of
reach of children.
GWARNING
If you attach heavy or large object stothe
SmartKey, the SmartKey could be uninten-
tionally turned in the ignition lock. This could
cause the engine to be switched off. There is a risk of an accident.
Do not attach any heavy or large object stothe
SmartKey. Remove any bulky key rings before
insertingt he SmartKey into the ignition lock.
!Keep the SmartKey away from stron gmag-
netic fields. Otherwise, the remote control
function could be affected.
Strong magnetic fields can occur in the vicin-
ity of powerful electrical installations.
Do not keep the SmartKey:
Rwith electronic devices, e.g. amobile phone
or another SmartKey.
Rwith metallic objects, e.g. coins or metal foil.
Rinside metallic objects, e.g. ametal case.
This can affect the functionality of the Smart- Key. Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO startf
unction:do
not keep the SmartKey on the parcel shelf or in
the trunk.O therwise, the SmartKey may not be
detected, e.g. when startin gthe engine using
the Start/Stop button.
Ac heck which periodically establishes aradio
connection between the vehicle and the Smart-
Key determines whether avalid SmartKey is in
the vehicle. This occurs, for example:
Rwhen startin gthe engine
Rwhile driving
Rwhen the external door handles are touched
Rduring convenience closing
SmartKey functions
:& To lock the vehicle
;FTo open/close the trunk lid
=%To unlock the vehicle
XTo unlock centrally: press the%button.
If you do not open the vehicle within approx-
imately 40 seconds of unlocking:
Rthe vehicle is locked again.
Ranti-theft protection is reactivated.
XTo lock centrally: press the&button.
The SmartKey centrally locks and unlocks the
following components:
Rthe doors
Rthe trunk lid
Rthe fuel filler flap
The turn signals flash once when unlocking and
three times when locking.
You can also set an audible signal to confirm
that the vehicle has been locked. The audible
signal can be activated and deactivated via the
multimedia system (see the Digital Operator's
Manual).

SmartKey battery
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Batteries contain toxic and corrosive substan- ces. If batteries are swallowed, it can result in
severe health problems. There is arisk of fatal
injury.
Keep batteries out of the reach of children. If
ab attery is swallowed, seek medical attention
immediately.
HEnvironmental note
Batteries contain dangerous
substances. It is against the
law to dispose of them with
the household rubbish. They
must be collected separately and recycled to protect the
environment.
Dispose of batteries in an
environmentally friendly
manner. Take discharged
batteries to aqualified spe-
cialist workshop or aspecial
collection point for used bat-
teries.
The SmartKey batteries contain perchlorate
material, which may require special handling
and regard for the environment. National guide-
lines must be observed during disposal. In Cal-
ifornia, see www.dtsc.ca.gov/
HazardousWaste/Perchlorate/index.cfm .
Mercedes-Benz recommends that you have the
batteries replaced at aqualified specialist work-
shop.
Checking the battery
XPress the &or% button.
The battery is working properly if battery
check lamp :lights up briefly.
The battery is discharged if battery check
lamp :does not light up briefly.
XChange the battery (Ypage 77).
If the SmartKey battery is checked within the
signal reception range of the vehicle, pressing
the & or% button:
Rlocks or
Runlocks the vehicle
iYou can get abattery at any qualified spe-
cialist workshop.
Replacing the battery
You require aCR20253Vc ell battery.
XTake the mechanical key out of the SmartKey
(Ypage 76).
XPress mechanical key ;into the SmartKey
opening in the direction of the arrow until bat-
tery compartmentc over:opens. Do not
hold battery compartmentc over:closed
while doing so.

matic locking mechanism via the multimedia
syste m(see the Digital Operator's Manual).
Unlocking/locking th edriver' sdoor
using th emechanical key
i
If you want to centrally lock the vehicle using
the mechanical key, begin by pressing the
locking button for the interior locking mech-
anism while the driver's door is open. Then
lock the driver's door using the mechanical
key.
XInsert the mechanical key int oopening :in
the protective cap.
XPull and hold the door handle.
XPull the protective cap on the mechanical key
as straight as possible away from the vehicle
until it releases.
XRelease the door handle.
XTo unlock: turn the mechanical key counter-
clockwise as far as it will go to position 1.
XTo lock:turn the mechanical key clockwise as
far as it will go to position 1.
If you use the mechanical key to unloc kand
open the driver's door, the anti-theft alarm sys- tem will be triggered.S
witch off the alarm

Trunk
Important safetyn otes
GWARNING
Combustion engines emit poisonous exhaust
gases such as carbo nmonoxide. Exhaust
gases can enter the vehicle interior if the
trunk lid is open when the engin eisrunning,
especially if the vehicle is in motion. There is a
risk of poisoning.
Always switc hoff the engin ebeforeo pening
the trunk lid. Never drive with the trunk lid
open.
GWARNING
If objects, luggage or loads are not secured or
not secured sufficiently, the ycould slip, tip
over or be flung around and thereby hit vehicle
occupants. There is arisk of injury, particu-
larly in the eventofs udden braking orasud-
den change in direction.
Always store object ssothat the ycannot be
flung around .Secure objects, luggage or
loads against slipping or tippin gbeforet he
journey.
!The trunk lid swings upwards when opened.
Therefore, make sure that there is sufficient
clearance above the trunk lid.

You can limit the openin gangle of the trunk lid in
the multimedia syste m(see the Digital Opera-
tor's Manual).
Do not leave the SmartKey in the trunk .You
could otherwise lock yourself out.
You should preferably place luggage or loads in
the trunk .Observe the loading guidelines
(
Ypage 268).

Obstacle detection with reversing
feature for the trunk lid
Vehicles with trunk lid remoteclosing fea-
ture:
The trun klid is equipped with automatic obsta-
cle detection with areversingf eature. Ifasolid
objec tblocks or restrictst he trunklid when
automatically opening ,this procedure is stop-
ped. If asolid objec tblocks or restrictst he trunk
lid when automatically closing, the trun klid
opens again automatically. The automatic
obstacle detection with reversingf eature is only
an aid. It is not asubstitute for your attentive-
ness when opening and closing the trun klid.
GWARNING
The reversingf eature does not respond:
Rto soft,light and thin objects, e.g. fingers
Rover the last 1/3 in (8 mm) of the closing
movement
The reversingf eature cannot prevents ome-
one being trapped in these situation sinpar-
ticular. There is arisk of injury.
Make sure that no body parts are in close
proximit yduring the closing procedure.
If somebody becomes trapped:
Rpress the Fbutton on the SmartKey, or
Rpull or press the remoteo peratingswitch
on the driver's door or
Rpress the closing or lockin gbutton on the
trun klid
Vehicles with HANDS-FREE ACCESS:
It is also possible to stop the closing process by
performing akicking movementu nder the rear
bumper.
Opening and closing manually
Opening
XPress the Fbutton on the SmartKey.
The trun klid opens.
Closing
XPull the trun klid down using recess :and
push it closed.
XLock the vehicle if necessary with the &
button on the SmartKey or with KEYLESS-GO
(
Ypage 75).
Opening/closing automatically from
outside
Important safetyn otes
GWARNING
Parts of the body could become trapped dur-
ing automatic closing of the trun klid. More-
over, people, e.g. children,m ay be standing in
the closing area or may enter the closing area
during the closing process.T here isarisk of
injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of the
closing area during the closing process.
Use one of the following option stostop the
closing process:
Rpress the Fbutton on the SmartKey.
Rpull or press the remoteo peratingswitch
on the driver's door.
Rpress the closing or lockin gbutton on the
trun klid.
GWARNING

Opening automatically
You can open the trun klid automatically using
the SmartKey.
XPress and hold the Fbutton on the Smart-
Key until the trun klid opens.
Closing automatically

XPress closing button :in the trun klid. Vehicles with trunk lid remot
eclosing fea-
tur eand KEYLESS-GO: when the driver's door
is closed you can simultaneously close the trunk
lid and lock the vehicle. The KEYLESS-GO key
must be in the rear detection range of the vehi-
cle.
XPress lockin gbutton ;in the trun klid.
If KEYLESS-GO detect saSmartKey outside
the vehicle, the trun klid closes. The vehicle is
locked.
If KEYLESS-GO detect saSmartKey in the trunk,
the trun klid opens again after it is closed.
If KEYLESS-GO detect sasecondS martKey out-
side the vehicle, the trun klid remains closed.
If KEYLESS-GO detect saSmartKey in the trunk
before the closing procedure starts, the trun klid
remains open.
HANDS-FREE ACCESS
Important safety notes
GWARNING
The vehicle's exhaust system may be very hot. You could burn yourself by touchin gthe
exhaust system if you use HANDS-FREE
ACCESS. There is arisk of injury. Always
ensure that you only make the kicking move-
ment within the detection range of sensors.
!If the SmartKey is within the rear detection
range of KEYLESS-GO, the following situa-
tions, for example, could lead to the uninten-
tional opening of the trunk:
Rusing acar wash
Rusing apower washer
Make sure that the SmartKey is at least 10 ft
(3 m) away from the vehicle.
General notes
With KEYLESS-GO and HANDS-FRE EACCESS,
you can open or close the trun klid or stop the
procedure without using your hands. This is use- ful if you have your hands full. To do this, make
ak icking movementu nder the bumper with your
foot.

Observe the following points:
RCarry your KEYLESS-GO key aboutyour per-
son. The KEYLESS-GO key must be in the rear
detection range of the vehicle.
RWhen making the kicking movement, make
sure that you are standing firmly on the
ground and that there is sufficient clearance
to the rear of the vehicle. You could otherwise
lose your balance e.g. on ice.
RAlwayse nsure that you only make the kicking
movement within the detection range of sen-
sors :.
RStand at least 12 in (30 cm) awayf rom the
rear area while doing so.
RDo not come into contact with the bumper
while making the kicking movement. Other-
wise, the sensors may not function correctly.
RHANDS-FREE ACCESS does not function
when the engine is started.
RDirt caused by road salt around sensors :
may restrict functionality.
Using the HANDS-FREE ACCESS with apros-
thetic leg may restrict functionality.
RIf aK EYLESS-GO key is within the rear detec-
tion range of KEYLESS-GO, HANDS-FREE
ACCESS could be triggered. The trunk lid
could thus be opened or closed unintention-
ally,f or example, if you:
-sit on the edge of the trunk.
-set something down or lift something up
behind the vehicle.
-polish the rear of the vehicle.
Do not carry the KEYLESS-GO key abouty our
person in these situations or in situations sim-
ilar to these. This will prevent the uninten-
tional opening/closing of the trunk.
Operation
XTo open/close: kick into sensor detection
range :under the bumper with your foot.
Aw arning tone will sound while the trunk lid is
opening or closing.
XIf the trunk lid does not open/close after
several attempts: wait at least ten seconds
and then using your foot kick under the
bumper again.
If you hold your foot under the bumper for too
long, the trunk lid does not open or close.
Repeatt he leg movement more quickly if this
occurs.
To stop the opening or closing procedure:
Rkick with your leg in the sensor detection
range :under the bumper or
Rpress the closing button on the trunk lid, or
Rpress the Fbutton on the SmartKey
If the trunk lid closing procedure has been stop-
ped:
Rmove your foot under the bumper againa nd
the trunk lid will open
If the trunk lid opening procedure has been
stopped:
Rmove your foot under the bumper againa nd
the trunk lid will close

is also unlocked, yo ucan also open the trunk lid
fromi nside.
Lockin gthe trunk separately
Youc an lock the trunk separately. If yo uthen
unlock the vehicl ecentrally ,the trunk remains
locked and cannot be opened.

XClose the trunk lid.
XOpen the glove box.
XPush the switch to position :.
If the vehicl eisunlocke dcentrally ,the trunk
remains locked.

The side windows ar eequippe dwithana uto-
matic reversing feature. If asolid object blocks
or restricts asidew indo wf romt raveling
upwards durin gthe automatic closing process,
the side windo wopens agai nautomatically. Dur-
ing the manua lclosing process, the side window
onl yopens agai nautomaticall yafter the corre-
sponding switch is released. The automatic
reversing featur eisonlyana idand is no substi-
tute for your attentio nwhenc losing asidew in-
dow.
