Problem
Possible causes/consequences and P Solutions
The engine does not
start. You cannot hear
the starter motor. The on-board voltage is too low because the battery is too weak or
discharged. X
Jump-start the vehicle ( Y
page 278).
If the engine does not start despite attempt stoj ump-start it:X
Consult aq ualified specialist workshop.
The starter motor was exposed to at hermal load that was too high.X
Allow the starter motor to cool down for approximately two minutes. X
Try to start the engine again.
If the engine still does not start: X
Consult aq ualified specialist workshop.
The engine is not running
smoothly and is misfir-
ing. There is am alfunction in the engine electronics or in am echanical
componen toft he engine management system.X
Only depress the accelerator pedal slightly.
Otherwise, non-combusted fuel may get into the catalytic converter
and damage it. X
Have the cause rectified immediately at aq ualified specialist work-
shop.
The coolant temperature
gauge shows av alue
above 248 ‡( 120 †).
The coolant warning
lamp may also be on and
aw arning tone may
sound. The coolant level is too low. The coolant is too hot and the engine is no
longer being cooled sufficiently. X
Stop as soon as possible and allow the engine and the coolant to
cool down. X

page 260). Observe the warning notes
as you do so and add coolant if necessary.
DYNAMIC SELEC Tb utton (all vehicles
except Mercedes-AMG vehicles) Use the DYNAMIC SELECT button to change the
drive program. Depending on the drive program
selected the following vehicle characteristics
will change: R
the drive (engine and transmission manage-
ment) R
the suspension (vehicles with damping sys-
tem or AMG adaptive sport suspension sys-
tem) R
the steering R
the availability of the ECO start/stop function R
the climate control:
Each time you start the engine with the Smart-
Key or the Start/Stop button, drive program C is
activated. For further information about starting
the engine, see ( Y
page 125). X
Press DYNAMIC SELECT button C as many
times as necessary until the desired drive
program is selected.
The selected drive program appears in the
multifunction display .A fter five seconds the
display goes out and the status icon of the
selected drive program appears.128

Driving and parking

There is as hort delay before ac hange in outside
temperature appears in the multifunction dis-
play.
Coolant temperature gauge
G WARNING
Opening the hood when the engine is over-
heated or when there is af ire in the engine
compartment could expose you to hot gases
or other service products. There is ar isk of
injury.
Let an overheated engine cool down before
opening the hood. If there is af ire in the
engine compartment ,k eep the hood closed
and contact the fire department. ! Ad isplay message is shown if the coolant
temperature is too high.
If the coolant temperature is over 248 ‡
(120 †), do not continue driving. The engine
will otherwise be damaged.
The coolant temperature gage is in the instru-
ment cluster on the right-hand side ( Y
page 33).
The H marking in the coolant temperature gauge
corresponds to ac oolant temperature of
approximately 248 ‡( 120 †).
Under normal operating conditions and at the
correc tc oolant level, the coolant temperature
gauge may rise to the H marking.

Uniform Tir eQ ualit yG rading StandardsAu nifor ms tandard to grade the quality of tires
with regards to tread quality, tire traction and
temperature characteristics. The quality grad-
ing assessmen tism ade by the manufacturer
following specification sf rom the U.S .g overn-
ment .T he ratings are molded int ot he sidewall of
the tire.
Recommended tir ep re ssuresThe recommended tire pressure applies to the
tires mounted at the factory.
The Tire and Loading Information placard con-
tains the recommended tire pressures for cold
tires on af ully loaded vehicle and for the maxi-
mum permissible vehicle speed.
The tire pressure table contains the recommen-
ded pressures for cold tires for various operat-
ing conditions, i.e. differin gl oad and speed con-
ditions.
Increased vehicle weight due to optional
equipment The combined weight of all standard and
optional equipment available for the vehicle,
regardless of whether it is actually installed on
the vehicle or not.
Rim This is the part of the wheel on which the tire is
mounted.
GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) The GAWR is the maximum gross axle weight
rating. The actual load on an axle must never
exceed the gross axle weight rating. The gross
axle weight ratin gc an be found on the vehicle
identification plate on the B-pillar on the driver's
side.
Speed rating
The speed ratin gisp art of the tire identification.
It specifies the speed range for which the tire is
approved.
GVW (Gross Vehicle Weight)
The gross vehicle weight includes the weight of
the vehicle includin gf uel, tools, the spare wheel,
accessories installed, occupants, luggage and
the drawbar noseweight ,ifa pplicable. The gross
vehicle weight must not exceed the gross vehi-
cle weight ratin gG VWR as specified on the vehi-
cle identification plate on the B-pillar on the
driver' ss ide. GVW R( Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)The GVWR is the maximum permissible gross
weight of af ully loaded vehicle (the weight of the
vehicle includin ga ll accessories, occupants,
fuel, luggage and the drawbar n oseweight ,i f
applicable). The gross vehicle weight ratin gi s
specified on the vehicle identification plate on
the B-pillar on the driver' ss ide.
Maximum loaded vehicle weight The maximum weight is the sum of: R
the curb weight of the vehicle R
the weight of the accessories R
the load limit R
the weight of the factory installed optional
equipment
Kilopascal (kPa) Metric unit for tire pressure. 6.9 kPa corre-
sponds to 1p si. Another unit for tire pressure is
bar. 100 kilopascals (kPa) are the equivalent of
1b ar.
Load index In addition to the load-bearin gi ndex ,t he load
index may also be imprinted on the sidewall of
the tire. This specifies the load-bearin gc apacity
more precisely.
Curb weight The weight of av ehicle with standard equipment
includin gt he maximum capacit yoff uel, oil and
coolant .Ita lso includes the air-conditionin gs ys-
tem and optional equipment if these are instal-
led in the vehicle, but does not include passen-
gers or luggage.
Maximum load rating
The maximum tire load is the maximum permis-
sible weight in kilogram sorl bs for which at ire is
approved.
Maximum permissible tir ep re ssure
Maximum permissible tire pressure for one tire.
Maximum load on one tire
Maximum load on one tire. This is calculated by
dividing the maximum axle load of one axle by
two.306

This could damage the engine.
Brake fluid
G WARNING
The brake flui dc onstantly absorbs moisture
from the air. This lowers the boiling point of
the brake fluid. If the boiling point of the brake
flui dist oo low ,v apo rp ockets may form in the
brake system when the brakes are applied
hard. This would impair braking efficiency.
There is ar isk of an accident.
You should have the brake flui dr enewe da t
the specified intervals.
When handling brake fluid, observe the impor-
tant safety notes on service products

The brake flui dc hange interval sc an be found in
the Maintenance Booklet.
Only use brake flui da pproved by Mercedes-
Benz in accordance with MB-Freigabe or MB-
Approva l3 31.0.

Coolant
Important safety notes
G WARNING
If antifreeze comes into contact with hot com-
ponents in the engine compartment, it may
ignite. There is ar isk of fire and injury.
Let the engine cool down before you add anti-
freeze. Make sure that antifreeze is not spilled
next to the filler neck. Thoroughly clea nt he
antifreeze from components before starting
the engine.
! Only add coolant that has been premixed
with the desired antifreeze protection. You
coul do therwise damage the engine.

vice Products, MB BeVo 310.1, e.g. on the
Internet at http://bevo.mercedes-benz.com.
Or contact aq ualified specialist workshop.
! Always use as uitable coolant mixture, even
in countries where high temperatures prevail.
Otherwise, the engine cooling system is not
sufficiently protected from corrosio na nd
overheating.

inhibitor/antifreeze concentrate. It performs

Make sure that no windshield washer con-
centrate is spilled next to the filler neck.
! Only MB SummerFi ta nd MB WinterFit
washer flui ds hould be mixed together. The
spra yn ozzles may otherwise become
blocked.
Do not use distille dord e-ionized water. Other-
wise, the leve ls ensor may give af als er eading. When handling washer fluid, observe the impor-
tant safety notes on service products

At temperatures above freezing: X
Fill the washer flui dr eservoir with am ixture of
water and windshield washer fluid, e.g. MB
SummerFit.
Add 1p art MB SummerFi tto1 00 parts water.
At temperatures below freezing: X
Fill the washer flui dr eservoir with am ixture of
water and washer fluid, e.g. MB WinterFit.
For the correct mixing ratio refer to the infor-
mation on the antifreeze reservoir.
i Add windshield washer fluid, e.g. MB Sum-
merFit or MB WinterFit, to the washer flui da ll

Climate control system refrigerant
Important safety notes The climate control system of you rv ehicl eisf il-
led with refrigerant R ‑ 134a.
The instruction label regarding the refrigerant
type use dc an be found on the left, on the under-
side of the hood.
! Only the refrigerant R ‑ 134a and the PAG oil
approved by Mercedes-Benz may be used.
The approved PAG oil may not be mixed with
any other PAG oil that is not approved for
R-134a refrigerant. Otherwise, the climate
control system may be damaged.
Service work, such as refilling with refrigerant or
replacing component parts, may only be carried
out by aq ualified specialist workshop. All appli-
cabl er egulations, as wel lasS AE standard J639,
must be adhered to.
