gered. The tailgate could thus be opened orclosed unintentionally, for example, if you:
-set something down or lift something upbehind the vehicle.
-polish the rear of the vehicle.
Do not carry the KEYLESS-GO key aboutyour person in these situations or in situa-tions similar to these. This will prevent theunintentional opening/closing of the tail-gate.
Operation
XTo open/close:kick your foot into sensordetection zone Cbelow the bumper.Two warning tones sound while the tailgateis opening or closing.
XIf the tailgate does not open/close afterseveral attempts:wait at least ten sec-onds, using your foot kick under the bumperagain.
If you hold your foot under the bumper for toolong, the tailgate does not open or close.Repeat the leg movement more quickly if thisoccurs.
To stop the opening or closing procedure:
Rkick with your foot into sensor detectionrange Cunder the bumper, or
Rpull the handle on the outside of the tail-gate, or
Rpress the closing button on the tailgate, or
Rpress the Tbutton on the SmartKey
If the tailgate closing procedure has beenstopped:
Rkick your foot under the bumper again andthe tailgate will open.
If the tailgate opening procedure has beenstopped:
Rkick your foot under the bumper again andthe tailgate will close.
Opening/closing automatically from
inside
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Parts of the body could become trapped
during automatic closing of the tailgate.
Moreover, people, e.g. children, may be
standing in the closing area or may enter the
closing area during the closing process.
There is a risk of injury.
Make sure that nobody is in the vicinity of
the closing area during the closing process.
Use one of the following options to stop the
closing process:
Rpress the Tbutton on the SmartKey.
Rpull or press the remote operating switch
on the driver's door.
Rpress the closing or locking button on the
tailgate.
Rpull the handle on the tailgate
GDANGER
Combustion engines emit poisonous
exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide.
Exhaust gases can enter the vehicle interior
if the tailgate is open while the engine is
running, especially if the vehicle is in
motion. There is a risk of poisoning.
Always switch off the engine before opening
the tailgate. Never drive with the tailgate
open.
!The tailgate swings upwards and to therear when opened. Therefore, make surethat there is sufficient clearance above andbehind the tailgate.
Two warning tones sound while the tailgate isopening or closing.

XPress and hold the 6button until theside windows and the panorama sunroof arein the desired position.If the roller sunblind of the panorama roofwith power tilt/sliding panel is closed, theroller sunblind is opened first.
XPress and hold the 6button once moreuntil the panorama roof with power tilt/slid-ing panel reaches the desired position.
XTo interrupt convenience opening:release the 6button.

Observe the complete closing procedure
when the convenience closing feature is
operating. Make sure that no body parts are
in close proximity during the closing proce-
dure.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO or KEYLESS-GOstart function:you can do the following at thesame time:
Rlock the vehicle
Rclose the side windows
Rclose the panorama roof with power tilt/sliding panel
On vehicles with a panorama roof with powertilt/sliding panel, you can then close the rollersunblind.

Using the SmartKey
XVehicles with KEYLESS-GO or KEYLESS-GO start function:for the following opera-tions, point the tip of the SmartKey at thehandle on the driver's door. The SmartKeymust be close to the driver's door handle.
iVehicles with KEYLESS-GO or KEYLESS-GO start function:the SmartKey must bein close proximity to the vehicle.
XPress and hold the 7button until theside windows and the panorama sliding sun-roof are fully closed.
XMake sure that all the side windows and thepanorama roof with power tilt/sliding panelare closed.
On vehicles with a panorama roof with powertilt/sliding panel:
XPress and hold the 7button again untilthe roller sunblind of the panorama slidingsunroof closes.
XTo interrupt convenience closing:releasethe 7button.
Using KEYLESS-GO
The driver's door and the door at which thehandle is used, must both be closed. TheSmartKey must be outside the vehicle. Thegap between the SmartKey and the corre-sponding door handle should not be greaterthan 3 ft (1 m).
XTouch recessed sensor surface Con thedoor handle until the side windows and thepanorama roof with power tilt/sliding panelare fully closed.

Resetting the side windows
If a side window can no longer be closed fully,you must reset it.
XClose all the doors.
XTurn the SmartKey to position Gor Hinthe ignition lock (Ypage 125).
XPull the corresponding switch on the doorcontrol panel until the side window is com-pletely closed (Ypage 84).
XHold the switch for an additional second.
If the side window opens again slightly:
XImmediately pull the corresponding switchon the door control panel until the side win-dow is completely closed (Ypage 84).
XHold the switch for an additional second.
XIf the respective side window remainsclosed after the button is released, then ithas been set correctly. If this is not thecase, repeat the steps above.
Problems with the side windows
GWARNING
If you close a side window again immediately after it has been blocked or reset, the side win-
dow closes with increased or maximum force. The reversing feature is then not active. Parts of
the body could be trapped in the closing area in the process. This poses an increased risk of
injury or even fatal injury.
Make sure that no parts of the body are in the closing area. To stop the closing process,
release the switch or push the switch again to reopen the side window.

XTurn the SmartKey to position Gor Hinthe ignition lock (Ypage 125).
XPress or pull the Wswitch in the corre-sponding direction.
If you press/pull the Wswitch beyond thepoint of resistance, automatic operation isstarted in the corresponding direction. Youcan stop automatic operation by pressing/pulling the switch again.
After opening the sliding sunroof, the rollersunblind closes slightly automatically. Thisreduces drafts in the vehicle interior.
If the sliding sunroof is raised at the rear, itlowers slightly automatically at higher speeds.The noise level in the vehicle interior isreduced as a result.
At low speeds it raises again automatically.
You can also temporarily deactivate automaticlowering. To do so, press the Wswitch. Thesliding sunroof raises again automatically.
You can continue to operate the sliding sun-roof after switching off the engine or removingthe SmartKey from the ignition lock. This func-tion remains active for five minutes or untilyou open a front door.
The sliding sunroof cannot be opened if a roofcarrier is installed. In order to allow ventilationof the vehicle interior, you can raise the slidingsunroof.
If contact is made with a roof carrier approvedby Mercedes-Benz, the sliding sunroof lowersslightly but remains raised at the rear.
Rain-closing feature
The rain-closing feature is only available forvehicles with a rain sensor.
When the SmartKey is in position Zin theignition lock or is removed, the sliding sunroofcloses automatically:
Rif it starts to rain.
Rat extreme outside temperatures.
Rafter six hours.
Rif there is a malfunction in the power supply.
The panorama roof with power tilt/slidingpanel remains raised at the rear in order toallow ventilation of the vehicle interior.
If the panorama roof with power tilt/slidingpanel is obstructed while being closed by therain-closing feature, it opens again slightly.The rain-closing feature is then deactivated.
The panorama roof with power tilt/slidingpanel does not close if:
Rit is raised at the rear.
Rit is blocked.
Rno rain is falling on the area of the wind-shield being monitored by the rain sensor. Ifthe vehicle, for example, is under a bridge orin a carport, the field of the sensor may becovered.
Operating the roller sunblind for the
panorama roof with power tilt/slid-
ing panel
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Parts of the body could become trapped
between the roller sunblind and frame or
sliding sunroof during automatic opening or
closing. There is a risk of injury.
When opening or closing, make sure that no
body parts are in the sweep of the roller
sunblind.
If somebody becomes trapped:
Rrelease the switch immediately, or
Rduring automatic operation, push the
switch briefly in any direction
The opening or closing procedure will be
stopped.
The roller sunblind shields the vehicle interiorfrom sunlight. The roller sunblind can only beopened and closed when the panorama roofwith power tilt/sliding panel is closed.
Roller sunblind reversing feature
The roller sunblind is equipped with an auto-matic reversing feature. If a solid object blocksor restricts the roller sunblind during the clos-ing process, the roller sunblind opens againautomatically. The automatic reversing featureis only an aid and is not a substitute for yourattentiveness when closing the roller sunblind.

If you come into contact with the electro-
lyte, observe the following:
RRinse off the electrolyte from your skin
immediately with water.
RImmediately rinse the electrolyte out of
your eyes thoroughly with clean water.
RIf the electrolyte is swallowed, immedi-
ately rinse your mouth out thoroughly. Do
not induce vomiting.
RIf electrolyte comes into contact with your
skin or hair or is swallowed, seek medical
attention immediately.
RImmediately change out of clothing which
has come into contact with electrolyte.
RIf an allergic reaction occurs, seek medi-
cal attention immediately.
The "Automatic anti-glare mirrors" function isonly available if the vehicle is equipped withthe "Mirrors package".
The rear-view mirror and the exterior mirror onthe driver's side automatically go into anti-glare mode if:
Rthe ignition is switched on and
Rincident light from headlamps strikes thesensor in the rear-view mirror
The mirrors do not go into anti-glare mode ifreverse gear is engaged or if the interior light-ing is switched on.

You can set the front-passenger side exteriormirror such that you can see the rear wheel onthat side as soon as you engage reverse gear.You can store this position.

Exterior lighting
General notes
For reasons of safety, Mercedes-Benz recom-mends that you drive with the lights switchedon even during the daytime. In some coun-tries, operation of the headlamps varies due tolegal requirements and self-imposed obliga-tions.
Setting the exterior lighting
Setting options
Exterior lighting can be set using the:

daytime running lamps or low-beam head-lamps go out after 3 minutes.
When the engine is running, the vehicle is sta-tionary and in bright ambient light: if you turnthe light switch to the `position, the day-time running lamps and parking lamps turn on.
If the engine is running and you turn the lightswitch to the Xposition, the manual set-tings take precedence over the daytime run-ning lamps.
USA only:
The daytime running lamps improve the visibil-ity of your vehicle during the day. To do this,the daytime running lamps function must beswitched on using the on-board computer(Ypage 199).
If the engine is running and you turn the lightswitch to the `or Xposition, the man-ual settings take precedence over the daytimerunning lamps.
Low-beam headlamps
Even if the light sensor does not detect that itis dark, the parking lamps and low-beam head-lamps switch on when the ignition is switchedon and the light switch is set to the Xposi-tion. This is a particularly useful function in theevent of rain and fog.
XTo switch on the low-beam headlamps:turn the SmartKey to position Hin the igni-tion lock or start the engine.
XTurn the light switch to X.The green Xindicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster lights up.
Front fog lamps
In conditions where visibility is poor due tofog, snow or rain, the fog lamps improve visi-bility as well as making it easier for other roadusers to see you. They can be operatedtogether with the parking lamps or togetherwith the parking lamps and low-beam head-lamps.
XTo switch on the fog lamps:turn theSmartKey to position Hin the ignition lockor start the engine.
XTurn the light switch to Xor X.
XPress the Zbutton.The green Zindicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster lights up.
XTo switch off the fog lamps:press the Zbutton.The green Zindicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster goes out.
Rear fog lamp
The rear fog lamp improves visibility of yourvehicle for the traffic behind in the event ofthick fog. Please take note of the country-spe-cific regulations for the use of rear fog lamps.
XTo switch on the rear fog lamp:turn theSmartKey in the ignition lock to position Hor start the engine.
XTurn the light switch to Xor X.
XPress the ^button.The yellow ^indicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster lights up.
XTo switch off the rear fog lamp:press the ^button.The yellow ^indicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster goes out.
Parking lamps
!If the battery charge is very low, the park-ing lamps or standing lamps are automati-cally switched off to enable the next enginestart. Always park your vehicle safely and ina well lit area, in accordance with the rele-vant legal stipulations. Avoid using the `parking lamps over a period of severalhours. If possible, switch on the right-hand dor left-hand cstanding lamps.
XTo switch on:turn the light switch to `.The green `indicator lamp in the instru-ment cluster lights up.
Standing lamps
Switching on the standing lamps ensures thecorresponding side of the vehicle is illumina-ted.
XTo switch on the standing lamps:theSmartKey is not in the ignition lock or it is inposition Zin the ignition lock.
XTurn the light switch to c(left-hand sideof the vehicle) or d(right-hand side ofthe vehicle).

the windshield wiper blades or scratch thewindshield.
For this reason, you should always switchoff the windshield wipers in dry weather.
Vehicles with a rain sensor: in the bor cposition, the appropriate wiping fre-quency is automatically set according to theintensity of the rain. In the cposition, therain sensor is more sensitive than in the bposition, causing the windshield wiper to wipemore frequently.
If the wiper blades are worn, the windshieldwill no longer be wiped properly. This couldprevent you from observing the traffic condi-tions.

Notes on breaking-in a new vehicle
Important safety notes
The sensor system of some driving and drivingsafety systems adjusts automatically while acertain distance is being driven after the vehi-cle has been delivered or after repairs. Fullsystem effectiveness is not reached until theend of this teach-in procedure.
New and replaced brake pads and discs onlyreach their optimum braking effect after sev-eral hundred kilometers of driving. Compen-sate for this by applying greater force to thebrake pedal.
The first 1000 miles (1500 km)
The more you look after the engine when it isnew, the more satisfied you will be with itsperformance in the future.
RYou should therefore drive at varying vehicleand engine speeds for the first 1000 miles(1500 km).
RAvoid heavy loads, e.g. driving at full throt-tle, during this period.
RChange gear in good time, before the tach-ometer needle is

sound and the distance warning lamp will lightup in the instrument cluster. Brake immedi-ately in order to increase the distance to thevehicle in front or take evasive action providedit is safe to do so.
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC operates inthe speed range between 0 mph (0 km/h) and120 mph (200 km/h).
Change into a lower gear in good time on longand steep downhill gradients. This is especiallyimportant if the vehicle is laden. By doing so,you will make use of the braking effect of theengine. This relieves the load on the brake sys-tem and prevents the brakes from overheatingand wearing too quickly.
Do not use Active Distance Assist DISTRONICon roads with steep gradients.
For Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC toassist you when driving, the radar sensor sys-tem must be operational.
As Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC trans-mits radar waves, it can resemble the radardetectors of the responsible authorities. Youcan refer to the relevant chapter in the Opera-tor's Manual if questions are asked about this.

always clearly identify other road users and
complex traffic situations.
In such cases, Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC can:
Rgive an unnecessary warning and then
brake the vehicle
Rneither give a warning nor intervene
Raccelerate or brake unexpectedly
There is a risk of an accident.
Continue to drive carefully and be ready to
brake, especially if Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC warns you.
GWARNING
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC brakes
your vehicle with up to 50% of the maximum
possible deceleration. If this deceleration is
not sufficient, Active Distance Assist
DISTRONIC alerts you with a visual and
acoustic warning. There is a risk of an acci-
dent.
Adjust your speed in these cases and main-
tain sufficient distance.
Apply the brakes yourself and/or take eva-
sive action.
