General notes
Using the driving dynamics display in the mul-timedia system display, you can see the driveprogram you have selected as well as addi-tional information on the vehicle's operatingstatus.

objects when they are in the immediatevicinity of the vehicle. You could damage thevehicle or the objects.
The sensors may not detect snow and otherobjects that absorb ultrasonic waves.
Ultrasonic sources such as an automatic carwash, the compressed-air brakes of a truckor a pneumatic drill could cause ParkingAssist PARKTRONIC to malfunction.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC may not func-tion correctly on uneven terrain.
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is activated auto-matically when you:
Rswitch on the ignition
Rshift the transmission to position[,^or\\
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is deactivated atspeeds above 11 mph (18 km/h). It is reacti-vated at lower speeds.
Range of the sensors
General notes
Parking Assist PARKTRONIC does not take intoaccount obstacles located:
Rbelow the detection range, such as persons,animals or objects
Rabove the detection range, e.g. overhangingloads, tail sections or loading ramps oftrucks
CSensors in the front bumper, left-hand side(example)
The sensors must be free from dirt, ice orslush. They can otherwise not function cor-rectly. Clean the sensors regularly, taking carenot to scratch or damage them (Ypage 282).

Problems with Parking Assist PARKTRONIC

Active Parking Assist
General notes
Active Parking Assist is an electronic parkingaid with ultrasound. It measures the road onboth sides of the vehicle. A parking symbolindicates a suitable parking space. Activesteering intervention and brake applicationcan assist you during parking and when exitinga parking space. You can also still use ParkingAssist PARKTRONIC (Ypage 171).
Important safety notes
Active Parking Assist is merely an aid. It is nota replacement for your attention to your imme-diate surroundings. You are always responsi-ble for safe maneuvering, parking and exiting aparking space. Make sure that there are nopersons, animals or objects in the maneuver-ing area when you are maneuvering or parking.
When Parking Assist PARKTRONIC is deactiva-ted, Active Parking Assist is also unavailable.
GWARNING
While parking or pulling out of a parking
space, the vehicle swings out and can drive
onto areas of the oncoming lane. This could
cause you to collide with other road users or
objects. There is a risk of an accident.
Pay attention to other road users or objects.
Stop the vehicle if necessary or cancel the
Active Parking Assist parking procedure.
!If they cannot be avoided, drive overobstacles such as curbs slowly and at anobtuse angle. Otherwise, you may damagethe wheels or tires.
Active Parking Assist may possibly indicateparking spaces which are not suitable for park-ing, for example:
Rwhere parking or stopping is prohibited
Rin front of driveways or entrances and exits
Ron unsuitable surfaces

Rthat are parallel to the direction of traveland at least 39.5 in (1.0m) longer than yourvehicle

When driving at speeds below 19 mph(30 km/h), you will see parking symbolDasa status indicator in the instrument cluster.When a parking space has been detected, anarrow towards the right or the left alsoappears. By default, Active Parking Assist onlydisplays parking spaces on the front-passenger side. Parking spaces on the driver'sside are displayed as soon as the turn signalon the driver's side is activated. When parkingon the driver's side, this must remain activateduntil you confirm the use of Active ParkingAssist by pressing thevbutton on the mul-tifunction steering wheel. The system automat-ically determines whether the parking space isparallel or at right-angles to the direction oftravel.
A parking space is displayed while you aredriving past it, and until you are approximately50 ft (15m) away from it.
Parking
GWARNING
If you leave the driver's seat when the vehi-
cle is only being braked by the Parking Pack-
age with rear view camera, it could roll
away:
Rif there is a malfunction in the system or
in the voltage supply
Rif the electrical system in the engine com-
partment, the battery or the fuses are
tampered with
Rif the battery is disconnected
Rif the vehicle is accelerated, e.g. by a vehi-
cle occupant
There is a risk of an accident.
Before leaving the vehicle, always secure it
against rolling away.
iIf Active Parking Assist detects obstacles,Active Parking Assist brakes automaticallywhile the vehicle is parking. You are respon-sible for braking in good time.
XStop the vehicle when the parking spacesymbol shows the desired parking space inthe instrument cluster.

TheParking Assist Active Select RParking Assist Active Select RObserve SurroundingsObserve Surroundingsmessage appears onthe multifunction display.
As soon as the parking procedure is complete,theActive Parking Assist FinishedActive Parking Assist Finishedmes-sage appears and a warning tone sounds. Thevehicle is now parked.
The vehicle is kept stationary without thedriver having to depress the brake pedal. Thebraking effect is canceled when you depressthe accelerator pedal.
Active Parking Assist no longer supports youwith steering interventions and brake applica-tions. When Active Parking Assist is finished,you must steer and brake again yourself.Active Parking Assist is still available.
Parking tips:
RThe way your vehicle is positioned in theparking space after parking is dependent onvarious factors. These include the positionand shape of the vehicles parked in frontand behind it and the conditions of the loca-tion. It may be the case that Active ParkingAssist guides you too far into a parkingspace, or not far enough into it. In somecases, it may also lead you across or ontothe curb. If necessary, cancel the parkingprocedure with Active Parking Assist.
RYou can also preselect transmission position[. The vehicle redirects and does not driveas far into the parking space. Should thetransmission change take place too early,the parking procedure is canceled. A sensi-ble parking position can no longer be ach-ieved from this position.
Exiting a parking space
In order that Active Parking Assist can supportyou when exiting the parking space:
Ryou need to have parked using Active Park-ing Assist.
Rthe border of the parking space must behigh enough at the front and the rear. Acurb stone is too small, for example.
Rthe border of the parking space must not betoo wide, as the position of the vehicle mustnot exceed an angle of 45° to the startingposition as it is maneuvered into the parkingspace.
Ra maneuvering distance of at least 3.3 ft(1.0 m) must be available.
Active Parking Assist can only assist you withexiting a parking space if you have parked thevehicle parallel to the direction of travel usingActive Parking Assist.
iIf Active Parking Assist detects obstacles,Active Parking Assist brakes automaticallywhile the vehicle is exiting the parkingspace. You are responsible for braking ingood time.
XStart the engine.
XRelease the electric parking brake.
XSwitch on the turn signal in the directionyou will drive out of the parking space.
XShift the transmission to position[or^.TheStart Parking Assist?Start Parking Assist?Yes: OKYes: OKNo:No:8message appears on the multifunctiondisplay.

If you back up after activation, the steeringwheel is moved to the straight-ahead posi-tion.

Once you have exited the parking space com-pletely, the steering wheel is moved to thestraight-ahead position. You hear a tone andtheActive Parking Assist FinishedActive Parking Assist Finishedmes-sage appears on the multifunction display. Youwill then have to steer and merge into trafficon your own. Active Parking Assist is still avail-able. You can take over the steering before thevehicle has exited the parking space com-pletely. This is useful, for example when yourecognize that it is already possible to pull outof the parking space.
Canceling Active Parking Assist
XStop the movement of the multifunctionsteering wheel or steer yourself.Active Parking Assist will be canceled atonce. TheActive Parking Assist Can‐Active Parking Assist Can‐celedceledmessage appears in the multifunctiondisplay.

Rif the rear of your vehicle is damaged. In thiscase, have the camera position and settingchecked at a qualified specialist workshop.
The field of vision and other functions of therear view camera may be restricted due toadditional accessories on the rear of the vehi-cle (e.g. license plate holder, rear bicyclerack).
iThe contrast of the display may be affec-ted by the sudden presence of sunlight orother light sources, e.g. when exiting agarage. Pay particular attention in this situa-tion.
iIf usability is severely restricted, e.g. dueto pixel errors, have the display repaired orreplaced.
Activating/deactivating the rear view
camera
XTo activate:make sure that the SmartKeyis in positionHin the ignition lock.
XMake sure that theActivation by R gearActivation by R gearfunction is selected in the multimedia sys-tem; see the Digital Operator's Manual.
XEngage reverse gear.The area behind the vehicle is shown withguide lines in the multimedia system dis-play.
The image from the rear view camera isavailable throughout the maneuvering proc-ess.
To deactivate:the rear view camera deacti-vates if you shift the transmission to]orafter driving forwards a short distance.
The inner segments of the warning indicatorare displayed in red if there is a complete sys-tem failure. The indicator lamp in thePARKTRONIC button lights up.
If the system fails at the rear of the vehicle:
Rthe rear segments are shown in red whenbacking up.
Rthe rear segments are hidden when drivingforwards.
Messages in the multimedia system
display
The rear view camera may show a distortedview of obstacles, show them incorrectly ornot at all. The rear view camera does not showobjects in the following positions:
Rvery close to the rear bumper
Runder the rear bumper
Rin the area immediately above the tailgatehandle
!Objects not at ground level may appear tobe further away than they actually are, e.g.:
Rthe bumper of a parked vehicle
Rthe drawbar of a trailer
Rthe ball coupling of a trailer tow hitch
Rthe rear section of an HGV
Ra slanted post
Use the guidelines only for orientation.Approach objects no further than the bot-tom-most guideline.

Do not use the 360° camera in this case. Youcan otherwise injure others or cause damageto objects or the vehicle.

The 360° camera image can be displayed if:

Important safety notes
ATTENTION ASSIST is only an aid to the driver.It might not always recognize fatigue orincreasing inattentiveness in time or fail torecognize them at all. The system is not a sub-stitute for a well-rested and attentive driver.
The functionality of ATTENTION ASSIST isrestricted and warnings may be delayed or notoccur at all:
Rif the length of the journey is less thanapproximately 30 minutes
Rif the road condition is poor, e.g. if the sur-face is uneven or if there are potholes
Rif there is a strong side wind
Rif you have adopted a sporty driving stylewith high cornering speeds or high rates ofacceleration
Rif you are predominantly driving slower than37 mph (60 km/h) or faster than 125 mph(200 km/h)
Rif the time has been set incorrectly
Rin active driving situations, such as whenyou change lanes or change your speed
ATTENTION ASSIST is reset when you continueyour journey and starts assessing your tired-ness again if:
Ryou switch off the engine
Ryou take off your seat belt and open thedriver's door, e.g. for a change of drivers orto take a break
Displaying the attention level
You can have current status information dis-played in the assistance menu (Ypage 196)of the on-board computer.
XSelect the Assistance display for AttentionAssist using the on-board computer(Ypage 197).
The following information is displayed:
RThe length of the journey since the lastbreak.
RTheAttention LevelAttention Leveldetermined byATTENTION ASSIST, displayed in a bar dis-play in five levels from high to low.
RIf ATTENTION ASSIST is unable to calculatethe attention level and cannot output awarning, theSystem SuspendedSystem Suspendedmessageappears. The bar display then changes thedisplay, such as when you are driving at aspeed below 37 mph (60 km/h) or above125 mph (200 km/h).
Activating ATTENTION ASSIST
XActivate ATTENTION ASSIST using the on-board computer (Ypage 198).The system determines the attention level ofthe driver depending on the setting selec-ted:
StandardStandardselected: the sensitivity with whichthe system determines the attention level isset to normal.
SensitiveSensitiveselected: the sensitivity is sethigher. The attention level detected by Atten-tion Assist is adapted accordingly and thedriver is warned earlier.
