Selecting the drive program

GWARNING
If the engine speed is above the idling speed
and you engage transmission positionDorR,
the vehicle could pull away suddenly. There is
a risk of an accident.
When engaging transmission positionDorR,
always firmly depress the brake pedal and do
not simultaneously accelerate.
GWARNING
The automatic transmission switches to neu-
tral positionNwhen you switch off the engine.
The vehicle may roll away. There is a risk of an
accident.
After switching off the engine, always switch
to parking positionP. Prevent the parked vehi-
cle from rolling away by applying the parking

The DIRECT SELECT lever is on the right of thesteering column.
The DIRECT SELECT lever always returns to itsoriginal position. The current transmission posi-tion],^,\\or[is shown on the trans-mission position display on the multifunctiondisplay (Ypage 142).
Selecting park position
!If the engine speed is too high or the vehicleis coasting, do not shift the automatic trans-mission directly from[to^, from^to[or directly to]. Otherwise, the automatictransmission may be damaged.

Engaging park position automatically
Park position]is automatically engaged if:
Ryou switch off the engine using the SmartKeyand remove the SmartKey

Do not shift the transmission to\\while driving. Otherwise, the auto-matic transmission could be dam-aged.
No power is transmitted from theengine to the drive wheels.
Releasing the brake pedal will allowyou to move the vehicle freely, e.g. topush it or tow it.
If ESP®is deactivated or faulty: shiftthe transmission to position\\if thevehicle is in danger of skidding, e.g.on icy roads.
If you switch the engine off with thetransmission in position^or[,the automatic transmission shifts to\\automatically.
!Coasting in neutral\\maycause damage to the drive train.

Changing gear
The automatic transmission shifts through theindividual gears automatically when it is in trans-mission position[. This automatic gear shift-ing behavior is determined by:
Rthe selected drive program
Rthe position of the accelerator pedal
Rthe road speed
Accelerator pedal position
Your style of driving influences how the auto-matic transmission shifts gear:
Rlittle throttle: early upshifts
Rmore throttle: late upshifts
Double-clutch function
When shifting down, the double-clutch functionis active regardless of the currently selecteddrive program. The double-clutch function
reduces load change reactions and is conduciveto a sporty driving style. The sound generated bythe double-clutch function depends on the driveprogram selected.
Kickdown
Use kickdown for maximum acceleration.
XDepress the accelerator pedal beyond thepressure point.The automatic transmission shifts to a lowergear depending on the engine speed.
XEase off the accelerator pedal once thedesired speed is reached.The automatic transmission shifts back up.
Gliding mode
Gliding mode is available depending on theequipment.
Gliding mode is characterized by the following:
RThe combustion engine is disconnected fromthe drive train.
RThe engine speed corresponds to the idlingspeed.
RThe multifunction display hides the gear indi-cator and displays transmission position[in green (Ypage 142).

In drive programEor in drive programC(Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 4MATIC/GLC 63 S 4MATIC) you can deactivate and acti-vate gliding mode using the ECO button(Ypage 137).
Gliding mode can be activated under the follow-ing conditions:
RThe speed is within a suitable range.
RThe course of the road is suitable, e.g. thereare no steep up or downhill gradients.
RYou are no longer depressing the acceleratorpedal.

Drive program RACE (S‑MODEL)
TheRACEdrive program is characterized by thefollowing:
Rthe vehicle exhibits driving characteristicssuitable for the racetrack.
Rall vehicle systems are set for maximumsportiness.
Rthe gearshift recommendation gives youinformation for slowly warming up the driveassemblies and for adopting a fuel-efficientdriving style (Ypage 147). You can follow thegearshift recommendations at all times andshift gear accordingly using the steeringwheel paddle shifters. On the basis of thegearshift recommendation, using the steeringwheel paddle shifters, you can optimize the
drive train and engine operating mode at anytime.
Rif you have selected a gear manually, this willbe maintained until the vehicle speed increa-ses or decreases dramatically.
Rthe vehicle pulls away in first gear.
Rthe automatic transmission shifts up later.the fuel consumption possibly being higher asa result of the later automatic transmissionshift points.

Manual gear shifting
General notes
You can change gear yourself using the steeringwheel paddle shifters. The transmission must bein position[for this.
Depending on which steering wheel paddleshifter is pulled, the automatic transmission
immediately shifts into the next gear down orup, if permitted.
To use manual shifting, you have two options:
Rtemporary setting
Rpermanent setting
If you activate manual gearshifting, the multi-function display will show the current gear andcinstead of transmission position[.
If you deactivate manual gearshifting, the gearswill be shifted automatically again.
Temporary setting
XTo activate:shift the DIRECT SELECT lever toposition[.
XPull steering wheel paddle shifterCorD.
The temporary setting is active for a certainamount of time. In certain conditions, the mini-mum amount of time is extended, e.g. in thecase of lateral acceleration, overrun mode ordriving on steep terrain.
XTo deactivate:pull steering wheel paddleshifterDand hold it in place.
or
XUse the DIRECT SELECT lever to switch thetransmission position.
or
XUse the DYNAMIC SELECT switch to changethe drive program.
Permanent setting
!Mercedes-AMG vehicles:the automatictransmission does not shift up automaticallyeven when the engine limiting speed for thecurrent gear is reached. When the engine lim-iting speed is reached, the fuel supply is cut toprevent the engine from overrevving. Alwaysmake sure that the engine speed does not

Shifting gears
XTo shift up:pull steering wheel paddleshifterD.The automatic transmission shifts up to thenext gear.
If the maximum engine speed in the gear cur-rently engaged is reached and you continue toaccelerate, the automatic transmission auto-matically shifts up in order to prevent enginedamage (except Mercedes-AMG vehicles).
Mercedes-AMG vehicles:if the temporarysetting has been activated and you continueto accelerate when the maximum enginespeed has been reached, the automatic trans-mission automatically shifts up. If the perma-nent setting is activated, the automatic trans-mission does not shift up automatically evenwhen the engine limiting speed for the currentgear is reached. Observe the protectionagainst reaching the overrevving range on themultifunction display. Always make sure thatthe engine speed does not reach the red areaof the tachometer.
XTo shift down:pull steering wheel paddleshifterC.The automatic transmission shifts down tothe next gear.
Automatic down shifting occurs when coast-ing.
If the engine were to exceed the maximumengine speed when shifting down, the auto-matic transmission protects against enginedamage by not shifting down.

Shift recommendation
The gearshift recommendations assist you inadopting an economical driving style. The rec-ommended gear is shown in the multifunctiondisplay.
XWhen the corresponding gearshift recom-mendationCappears in the multifunctiondisplay of the instrument cluster, shift to rec-ommended gearD.
Protection against reaching the over-
revving range (Mercedes-AMG vehicles)
!In manual mode, the automatic transmis-sion does not shift up automatically evenwhen the engine limiting speed for the currentgear is reached. When the engine limitingspeed is reached, the fuel supply is cut toprevent the engine from overrevving. Alwaysmake sure that the engine speed does notreach the red area of the tachometer. There isotherwise a risk of engine damage.
Before the engine speed reaches the red area,an upshift indicator will be shown in the multi-function display.
XWhen messageCappears on the multifunc-tion display, pull the right-hand steeringwheel paddle shifter.
Kickdown
XFor maximum acceleration, depress theaccelerator pedal beyond the pressure point.The automatic transmission shifts to a lowergear depending on the engine speed.
XShift back up once the desired speed isreached.
If you apply full throttle, the automatic trans-mission shifts up to the next gear when themaximum engine speed is reached. This pre-vents the engine from overrevving.
Mercedes-AMG vehicles:kickdown is onlypossible in the temporary setting.

Problems with the transmission

!Since ESP®engages automatically, the igni-tion must be switched off (the SmartKey orStart/Stop button must be in positionZorG) if

Otherwise, the brake system can be dam-aged.
!Vehicles with 4MATIC must not be towedwith either the front or the rear axle raised, asdoing so will damage the transmission.
Refueling
Important safety notes
GWARNING
Fuel is highly flammable. Risk of fire and
explosion by improper handling of fuel.
You must avoid fire, open flames, smoking
and creating sparks. Switch off the ignition
before refueling and, if present, switch off the
auxiliary heating.
GWARNING
Fuel is poisonous and hazardous to health.
There is a risk of injury.
You must make sure that fuel does not come
into contact with your skin, eyes or clothing
and that it is not swallowed. Do not inhale fuel
vapors. Keep fuel away from children.
If you or others come into contact with fuel,
observe the following:
RWash away fuel from skin immediately
using soap and water.
RIf fuel comes into contact with your eyes,
immediately rinse them thoroughly with

GWARNING
If you leave children unsupervised in the vehi-
cle, they could set it in motion by, for example:
Rrelease the parking brake.
Rshift the automatic transmission out of the
parking positionP.
Rstart the engine.
In addition, they may operate vehicle equip-
ment and become trapped. There is a risk of
an accident and injury.
When leaving the vehicle, always take the
SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. Never
leave children unsupervised in the vehicle.
!Always secure the vehicle correctly againstrolling away. Otherwise, the vehicle or its driv-etrain could be damaged.
To ensure that the vehicle is secured againstrolling away unintentionally:
Rthe electric parking brake must be applied.
Rthe transmission must be in position]andthe SmartKey must be removed from the igni-tion lock.
Rthe front wheels must be turned towards thecurb on steep uphill or downhill gradients.
Rthe empty vehicle must be secured at thefront axle with a wheel chock or similar, forexample, on uphill or downhill gradients.
Ron uphill or downhill gradients the laden vehi-cle must also be secured at the rear axle, forexample with a wheel chock or similar object.

After switching off the engine, always switch
to parking positionP. Prevent the parked vehi-
cle from rolling away by applying the parking
brake.
Vehicles with automatic transmission
XApply the electric parking brake.
XShift the transmission to position].
XWith the SmartKey:turn the SmartKey toposition

This helps you to avoid overheating thebrakes and wearing them out excessively.
When you take advantage of engine braking, adrive wheel may not turn for some time, e.g.on a slippery road surface. This could causedamage to the drive train. This type of damageis not covered by the Mercedes-Benz war-ranty.
Heavy and light loads
GWARNING
If you rest your foot on the brake pedal while
driving, the braking system can overheat. This
increases the stopping distance and can even
cause the braking system to fail. There is a
risk of an accident.
Never use the brake pedal as a footrest. Never
depress the brake pedal and the accelerator
pedal at the same time.
!Depressing the brake pedal constantlyresults in excessive and premature wear tothe brake pads.
If the brakes have been subjected to a heavyload, do not stop the vehicle immediately. Driveon for a short while. This allows the airflow tocool the brakes more quickly.
Wet roads
If you have driven for a long time in heavy rainwithout braking, there may be a delayed reac-tion from the brakes when braking for the firsttime. This may also occur after the vehicle hasbeen washed or driven through deep water.
You have to depress the brake pedal morefirmly. Maintain a greater distance from thevehicle in front.
After driving on a wet road or having the vehiclewashed, brake firmly while paying attention tothe traffic conditions. This will warm up thebrake discs, thereby drying them more quicklyand protecting them against corrosion.
Limited braking performance on salt-
treated roads
If you drive on salted roads, a layer of salt resi-due may form on the brake discs and brakepads. This can result in a significantly longerbraking distance.
RIn order to prevent any salt build-up, apply thebrakes occasionally while paying attention tothe traffic conditions.
RCarefully depress the brake pedal and thebeginning and end of a journey.
RMaintain a greater distance to the vehicleahead.
Servicing the brakes
!The brake fluid level may be too low, if:
Rif the red brake warning lamp lights up inthe instrument cluster and
Ryou hear a warning tone while the engine isrunning
Observe additional warning messages in themultifunction display.
The brake fluid level may be too low due tobrake pad wear or leaking brake lines.
Have the brake system checked immediately.Consult a qualified specialist workshop toarrange this.
!Vehicles with 4MATIC:function or per-formance tests may only be carried out on a 2-axle dynamometer. If you wish to operate thevehicle on such a dynamometer, please con-sult a qualified specialist workshop inadvance. You could otherwise damage thedrive train or the brake system.
!Vehicles with 4MATIC:the ESP®systemoperates automatically. If the electric parkingbrake is tested on a brake dynamometer, theengine and ignition must be switched off: turnthe SmartKey in the ignition lock to position
