when driving on downhill gradients and
slopes. Obse rveth e no tes on driving in
mountainous terrain.
R Do not drive on unknown terrain that is not
easily visible and stay on mar kedro utes.
R Alw ayske ep the doors and windo wsclosed
while theve hicle is in motion.
R Deactivate Active Dis tance Assi st
DISTRONIC, cruise control and theva riable
limiter. R
Adapt your driving style to thete rrain.
R Do not use the HOLD function on steep
downhill or uphill gradients with slippery or
loose sur faces.
Driving on sand
When driving on sand, also obser vethefo llowing
instructions:
R Select theF drive program.
R Select a higher vehicle le vel.
R Shift toa lo werge ar.
R Drive quickly to overcome thero lling resist‐
ance, otherwise theve hicle may dig itself in.
R Drive in the trac ksofother vehicles if possi‐
ble. Make sure that thefo llowing prerequi‐
sites are me t:
- the tyre ruts are not too deep
- the sand is firm enough
- the ground clearance is suf ficient

R Drive at no more than 10 km/h.
R Obser vethe maximum permissible ford ing

tion: switch thest ationary heater/ ventilation
off (/ page 171).
R Ensu rethat a bow wave does not form asyou
drive.
R Do not stop in thewate r and do not switch
off the engine. Ensure the ECO start/ stop
function is switched off (/ page191).
Driving in mountainous terrain

driving in moun tainous terrain:

The vehicle is secured with the electric park‐
ing brake.
In thefo llowing situations, theve hicle is held by
transmission position jorby the electric park‐
ing brake:
R The seat belt is unfas tened and the driver's
door is opened.
R The vehicle is switched off.
R There is a malfunction in the sy stem or the
po we r supp lyis insuf ficient. St

The start-off assist enables optimal vehicle
acceleration from a standstill. Forth is, a suitably
high- grip road sur face is required, the tyres and
ve hicle must also be in good condition.
Do not activate thest art-off assist on public
ro ads.

tion on ESP ®
. Ac
tivating the start-off assi st &
WARNING Risk of skidding and having
an accident from wheels spinning
When you use start-off assist, individual
wheels could spin and you could lose cont rol
of theve hicle.
If ESP ®
is deactivated, there is a risk of skid‐
ding and accident! #
Make sure that no persons or obstacles
are in the close vicinity of your vehicle. #

Movethesteering wheel tothest ra ight-
ahead position. #
Depress the brake pedal firm ly wi thyour left
fo ot and keep it depressed. #

Select the sportiest available drive program

Take your foot off the brake, but keep the
accelerator pedal depressed.

AIRMATIC is an air suspension sy stem with varia‐
ble damping for impr oved driving comfort and
ve hicle dynamics. The all-round le vel control sys‐
te m ensures the best possible suspension and
const ant ground clearance, even wi tha laden
ve hicle. When driving at speed, theve hicle is
lo we red automatically toimpr ove driving saf ety
and toreduce fuel consum ption. You also ha ve Driving and pa

Push rocker switch 1forw ards.
Indicator lamp 2flashes while theve hicle is
being raised and lights up continuously when
it has finished rising.
The vehicle is raised tooff-road le vel +1. Yo
ur selection is sa ved. The off-road le vel +1 set
re mains stored even af terth e ignition has been
switched off.
The vehicle is lo wered again in thefo llowing sit‐
uations:
R When driving fasterthan 80 km/h.
R When driving brief ly between 65 km/ h and
80 km/h.
R After selecting a dif fere nt drive program
using theDY NA MIC SELECT switch.
In this case, theve hicle is adjus tedto the height
of the active drive program.

Setting the entering/exiting le vel (AIRMATIC)

AC TIVE BODY CONT ROL Fu
nction of E- ACTIVE BODY CONT ROL
E- AC TIVE BODY CONTROL is an electrohydraulic
suspension sy stem with variable damping for
impr oved driving comfort. The all-round le vel
control sy stem ensures the best possible sus‐
pension and const ant ground clearance, even
with a laden vehicle. When driving at speed, the
ve hicle is lo wered automatically toimpr ovedriv‐
ing saf ety and toreduce fuel consum ption. The
suspension setting is adjus ted depending on the Driving and pa
rking 255

When free driving mode is activated, the
ve hicle bounces up and down. Body parts
could become trapped if they are between
th eve hicle body and the tyres or underneath
th eve hicle. #
Make sure that nobody is under or in
th e immediate vicinity of theve hicle
when free driving mode is activated. *

moving up and down When free driving mode is activated,
the
ve hicle mo ves up and down. Vehicle parts
may be damaged if the underbody bottoms
out. #
Make sure that there is suf ficient
ground clearance when rocking free
mode is activated. Ro
cking free mode is a function of the suspen‐
sion which can assist the driver on loose sur fa‐
ces (e.g. sand, snow) when freeing a vehicle
which has become stuc k.
The vehicle body rock s in slo w,vertical motions
when reco very mode has been activated. This
te mp orarily puts the wheels under greater load,
which means they have inc reased traction and
th eve hicle is freed.

If th e ball neck is not in the loc ked position, the trailer may come loose. #
Pull over and stop theve hicle safely as soon as possible, paying attention toroad and traf fic conditions.
Do not continue driving under any circums tances. #
Uncouple the trailer and secure it against rolling away. #
Initiate a new swivelling procedure and do not re-couple the trailer until the display message disappears. If
th e display message does not disappear, the trailer hitch is defective and the ball neck is not loc ked. #
Do not couple up the trailer. Drive on without the trailer. No tethere duced ground clearance due tothe
