The radar sensor system must be switched off
using the on-boar dcomputer in the vicinit yof
radio telescop efacilities in the following vehi-
cles:
R vehicles without COMAND Online and nav-
igation
R vehicles without Audio 20 and Becker ®
MAP PILOT
R vehicles for Australia
Information about switching off the rad ar sen-
so rs ystem using the on-board computer can
be found in the "On-board computer and dis-
plays “section (Y page 249).
For PRE- SAFE®
Brake to assist you whe ndriv-
ing ,the radar sensor system must be
switc hed on (Y page 249) an dbeopera-
tional.
Followin gdamage to the fron tend of the vehi-
cle ,havet he configuration and operation of
the radar sensors checked at aqualified spe-
cialist workshop. This also applie stoc olli-
sions at slow speeds where ther eisnovisible
damage to the fron tofthe vehicle. STEE
RCONTROL
The steering assistan tSTEE RCONTROL helps
you by transmittin ganoticeable steering
force to the steering wheel in the direction
required for vehicle stabilisation.
This steering assistance is provided in partic-
ular if:
R both right wheels or both left wheels ar eon
aw et or slippery road surface when you
brake
R the vehicle starts to skid
You have control over the steerin gatall
times. G
WARNING
If there is an ESP ®
malfunction, you will not
receiv eany steering assistance from the
STEER CONTROL. The steering continues to
function with steering assistance. Anti-theft systems
Immobiliser
The immobilise rprevents your vehicl efrom
being starte dwithout the correct key.
X To activate with the key: removethe key
from the ignition lock.
X To activate wit hKEYLESS-GO: switch the
ignition off and open the driver' sdoor.
X To deactivate: switchont he ignition.
i The immobiliser is always deactivated
when you star tthe engine. ATA (Anti-Thef
tAlarm system)
Av isual and audible alarm is triggered if the
alarm system is prime dand you ope n:

R the vehicle with the emergency key ele-
ment

The alar misnot switched off ,even if you

To prime: lock the vehicle with the key or
KEYLESS-GO.
Indicator lamp :flashes. The alarm sys-
tem is primed after approximately 15 sec-
onds.

Key functions
Locking and unlocking centr ally The key centrally locks/unlocks:
R the doors
R the tailgate
R the fuel filler flap G
WAR
NING
Only for the Unite dKingdom: if the vehicle
has been locked with the key or with KEY-
LESS-GO, the double lock function is activa-
ted as standard. It is then not possible to open
the doors from inside the vehicle.
Therefore, do not leave any people behind in
the vehicle, particularly children ,elderly peo-
ple or people requirin gspecial assistance. As
ar esult, they may not be able to free them-
selves in the event of an emergency. They
could be seriously or even fatally inju redby
prolonged exposure to extremely high or low
temperatures, for example. In this case, res-
cuin gpeople from outside the vehicle is diffi-
cult.
Deac tivate th einterior motion sensor before
you lock the vehicle. The doors can then be
opened from the inside after the vehicl ehas
been locked from the outside. G
WARNING
If children are left unsupervised in the vehicle,
they could:
R open adoor from inside the vehicle at any
time, even if it has been locked
R star tthe vehicle usin gakey which has been
left in the vehicle
R release the electric parking brake
They could thereby endanger themselves and
others. Never leave children unsupervised in
the vehicle. Alway stake the key with you
when leaving the vehicle, even if you are only
leaving it for ashort time. G
WARNING
If ak ey rin gistoo heavy or too large, the
weight actin gonthe key coul dcause it to turn
in the ignition lock or catc honthe steering
wheel. This coul dcause the engine to be
switched off suddenly. You may lose control
of the vehicle and cause an accident. Do not
attac hany heavy or large key rings to the key
that is inserted in the ignition. :

When unlocking, the tur nsignals flash once.
When locking, they flash three times.
When it is dark, the surroun dlighting also
comes on if it is activated in the on-board
computer (Y page 248).
You can also set an audible signal to confirm
that the vehicle has been locked. The audible 72

lcan be activated and deactivated using
the on-board computer (Y page 249).
X To unlock centrally: press the%but-
ton.
If you do not open the vehicle within approx-
imately 40 seconds of unlocking:
R the vehicle is locked again.
R the anti-theft system is primed again.
X To lock centrally: press the&button. KEYLESS-GO
You can start, lock or unlock the vehicle using
KEYLE SS-GO. To do this ,you only need carry
the key with you. When you touc hthe surface
of the sensor sonthe vehicle' soutside door
handles ,KEYLESS-GO establishes aradio
connection between the vehicle and the key.
When the engine is started and whils tyou are
driving, KEYLE SS-GO also checks whether a
valid key is in the vehicl ebyperiodically
establishing radi ocontact.
When locking or unlockin gwith KEYLESS-GO,
the distance between the key and the door
handle you wish to lock or unlock must not
be greater than 1m. X
To unlock the vehicle: touch the inner
surface of the doo rhandle.
X To lock the vehicle: touch sensorsur-
face :.
X Convenienc eclosing feature: touch
recessed sensor surface ;for an exten-
ded period (Y page 85). If you pull on the handle of the tailgate, only

unlocked. Changing th
esettings of the locking
system
You can change the setting of the locking
system in such away that only the driver's
door and the fuel filler flap are unlocked. This
is useful if you frequently travel on your own.
X To change the setting: press and hold
down the %and& buttons simulta-
neously for approximately six seconds until
the battery check lamp (Y page 74)
flashes twice.
i If the setting of the locking system is
changed within the signal range of the vehi-
cle, pressing the &or% button locks
or unlocks the vehicle.
The key now function sasfollows:
X To unlock th edriver's door: press the
% button once.
X To unlock centrally: press the%but-
ton twice.
X To lock centrally: press the&button.
The KEYLESS-GO function is change dasfol-
lows:
X To unlock th edriver's door: touch the
inner surface of the doo rhandle on the
driver' sdoor.
X To unlock centrally: touchthe inner sur-
face of the door handl eonthe front-
passenger door or the rea rdoor.
X To lock centrally: touchthe outer sensor
surface on one of the door handles. Restoring th
efactory settings
X Press the %and& button ssimulta-
neously for approximately six seconds until
the battery check lamp flashes twice. Key

You can also switc

puter (Y page 249). Unlocking th
edriver' sdoor (emer-
gency key element)
If the vehicle can no longer be unlocked with
the key, use the emergenc ykey element.
If you use the emergenc ykey elemen tto
unlock and open the driver' sdoor, the anti-
thef talarm system will be triggered
(Y page 68).
X Take the emergenc ykey elemen tout of the
key (Y page 74).
X Insert the emergenc ykey elemen tinto the
lock of the driver's doo rasfar as it will go. X
Turn the emergency key element anti-
clockwise to position 1.
The door is unlocked.
i On right-hand-drive vehicles, turn the
emergency key element clockwise.
X Turn the emergency key element back and
remove it.
X Insert the emergency key element into the
key. Locking the vehicle (emergency key
element)
If the vehicle can no longer be locked with the
key, use the emergency key element. X
Open the driver' sdoor.
X Close the front-passenger door, the rear
doors and the tailgate.
X Press the locking button (Y page 78).
X Check whether the locking knobs on the
front-passenger door and the rea rdoors
ar es till visible. Press down the locking
knobs by hand, if necessary.
X Clos ethe driver's door.
X Take the emergenc ykey elemen tout of the
key (Y page 74).
X Insert the emergency key element into the
lock of the driver' sdoor as far as it will go. X
Tur nthe emergenc ykey elemen tclockwise
as far as it will go to position 1.
i On right-hand-drive vehicles, turn the
emergenc ykey elemen tanti-clockwise.
X Turn the emergency key element back and
remove it.
X Make sure that the doors and the tailgate
are locked.
X Insert the emergency key element into the
key.
i If you lock the vehicl easdescribed above,
the fuel filler fla pisnot locked. The anti-
thef talarm system is not primed. Luggage compartment

Do not leave the key in the luggage compart-
ment. You could otherwise lock yourself out. Luggage compartment

WARNING
If the engine is running and the tai lgate is
open, exhaust gase scan enter the vehicle
interior. This coul dresult in poisoning. There-
fore, mak esure that the tailgate is always
closed when the engine is running.
! The tailgate swings upwards and to the
rear when opene d. Therefore, mak esure
that there is sufficient clearance above and
behind the tailgate.
i You will find details on the tailgate open-
ing dimensions in the Technical data sec-
tion (Y page 378).
For vehicle swithou tEASY-PACK tailgate
you can:
R open and close the tailgate manually from
outside
R unlock the tailgate from inside with the
emergency release
For vehicle swith EASY-PACK tailgate you
can:
R close the tailgate manually from outside
R open and close the tailgate automatically
from outside
R open and close the tailgate automatically
from inside
R limit the opening angle of the tailgate
R unlock the tailgate from inside with the
emergency release Opening/closing from the outside

Press the %button on the key. X
Pull handle :.
X Raise the tailgate.
Vehicles with the EASY-PACK tailgate: if
you pull handle :and then release it, the
tailgate opens automatically.

WARNING
Make sure that nobody can become trapped
as you close the tailgate. X
Pull the tailgate down using recess :.
X Push the tailgate closed from outside the
vehicle.
X If necessary, lock the vehicle with
the & button on the key (Y page 72)or
with KEYL ESS-GO (Ypage 73).
i IfaK EYLESS-GO key is detected in the
lugg age compartment, the tailgate wil lnot

Only for the United Kingdom: if the vehicle
has been locked with the key or with KEY-

tailgate again or pull the handle on the outside

WARNING

remote operating button from the driver's
seat again.
You can open and close the tailgate from the
driver's seat when the vehicle is stationary
and unlocked. X
To open: pull remote operating switch :
for the tailgate until the tailgate opens.
X To close: turn the key to position 1or 2in
the ignition lock.
X Press remote operating switch for tail-
gate :until the tailgate is closed. Limiting the opening angle of the tail-
gate
Important safety notes You can limit the opening angle of the tail-
gate. This is possible in the top half of its
opening range, up to approximately 10 cm
before the stop.
!
Make sure there is sufficien tclearanc eto
open the tailgate fully when setting the
openin gangle .The tailgat ecould otherwise
be damaged. Ideally, set the openin gangle
outside.
Activating X
To open the tailgate: pull the handle on
the tailgate.
X To stop the opening procedur eatthe
desire dposition: press the closing button
(Y page 81) in the tailgate or pull the handle
on the outside of the tailgate again.
X To store the position: press and hold the
closing button in the tailgate until you hear
as hort tone.
The opening angl elimiter is activated. The
tailgate will now stop in the stored position
when opening.
Deactivating X
Press and hold the closing button
(Y page 81) in the tailgate until you hear
two short tones. Tailgat

If the tailgate can no longe rbeo pened from
outside the vehicle, use the emergency
release on the inside of the tailgate.

When opening, the tailgate swings up and
out. Therefore, mak esure that there is suf-
ficient clearance above and behind the tail-
gate.
X Insert emergency key element ;into
opening in trim :.
X Turn emergency key element ;90° clock-
wise.
X Push emergency key element ;in the
direction of the arrow and open the tail-
gate. Side windows
Important safety notes

WARNING
Make sure that nobody can become trapped
between the side window and the door frame
when aside window is opened. Do not touch
or lean against the side window during the
opening procedure. You could become trap-
ped between the side window and the door
frame as the side window moves down. If
there is arisk of becoming trapped, release
the switch or pull the switch upwards to close
the side window again. G
WARNING
Make sure that nobody can become trapped
as you close aside window. If there is arisk
of becoming trapped, release the switch or
press it agai ntoopen the side window again. G
WARNING
Children may injur ethemselves if they open
or close the side windows.
Never leav echildren unsupervised in the vehi-
cle. Always tak ethe key with you when leaving
the vehicle, even if you ar eonly leaving it for
as hort time. G

Cancell ingA ctive Parking Assist You can cancel Active Parking Assist at any
time.
X Stop the movemen tofthe multifunc tion
steerin gwheel or steer yourself.
Ac tive Parkin gAssist will be cancelled at
once. The Park Assist cancelled mes-
sage appears in the multifunc tion display.

X Press the PARKTRONIC button on the
cen trec onsole (Y page 192).
PARKTRONIC is switched off and Active
Parkin gAssist is immediately cancelled.
The Park Assist cancelled message
appears in the multifunc tion display. Active Parkin
gAssist is cancelled automati-
cally if:
R parkin gusing Ac tive Parkin gAssist is no

Once the electrica lconnection is established
between your vehicl eand the trailer, Active
Parking Assist is no longer available .PARK-
TRONIC is deactivated for the rear area. Reversin
gcamera
Important safety notes Th
er eversing camera is an optica lparking
and manoeuvring aid. It shows the area
behind your vehicle with guide lines in the
COMAND displ ay. G
WARNING
Make sure tha tnopersons or animals are in
the manoeuvring range. Otherwise, they
could be injured.
The reversing camera is in the handle on the
