Switching air-recirculation mode
on/off
Important safety notes You can deactivate the intake of fresh air if
unpleasant odors enter the vehicle from out-
side. The air inside the vehicle is then circula-
ted.
When you switch on air-recirculation mode,
the side windows and windows could fog up
more quickly, in particular at low outside tem-
peratures. Only switch on air-recirculation
mode for a short time.
Air-conditioning system or dual-zone
automatic climate control X
Switch on climate control ( Y page 117).
X Press the h button.
If the indicator lamp in the h button
lights up, air-recirculation mode is activated.
Air-recirculation mode switches on automati-
cally: R at high outside temperatures
R while driving in a tunnel (only vehicles with a
navigation system)
The indicator lamp in the h button is then
not lit up. Outside air is added automatically
after about

30 minutes.
Air-recirculation mode is deactivated automati-
cally:
R after approximately five minutes at outside
temperatures below about 45 ‡ (7 †)
R after approximately five minutes when the
cooling with air-dehumidification function is
deactivated
R after approximately 30 minutes at outside
temperatures above about 45 ‡ (7 †) and
when the cooling with air-dehumidification
function is active Convenience opening/pre-entry cli-

WARNING
During convenience opening, body parts
could be drawn in or become trapped
between the side window and the door
frame. There is a risk of injury. Monitor the entire opening procedure when
using convenience opening. When opening,
make sure that nobody touches the side
window. Release the % switch immedi-
ately if somebody becomes trapped, to
interrupt the opening procedure.
X Pre-entry climate control and conveni-
ence opening with the key:
press and hold
the % button on the key.
The side windows open automatically and
the blower of the climate control system is
activated.
X Release the % button.
i At high interior temperatures, the blower is
also switched on when a door is opened.
This means that slightly cooled air enters
the vehicle interior after the engine is star-
ted, to cool the vehicle more rapidly. Switching the residual heat function
on/off
General notes Only vehicles with dual-zone automatic climate
control have the residual heat function.
Once the engine is switched off, it is possible
to make use of the residual heat of the engine
to continue heating or ventilating the front
compartment of the vehicle for approximately
30 minutes. The heating or ventilation time
depends on the set interior temperature.
Switching the function on/off X
Turn the key to position 0 in the ignition
lock or remove it.
X Press the Ì button.
If the residual heat function is activated, the
indicator lamp in the Ì button comes on.
The blower will run at a low speed regard-
less of the airflow setting.
If you activate the residual heat function at
high temperatures, only the auxiliary ventila-
tion will be activated. The blower then runs
at medium speed. Operating the climate control system

ing sparks under all circumstances. Switch
off the engine and, if applicable, the auxiliary
heating before refueling. G

Fuels are toxic and harmful to health. There
is a risk of injury.
You must avoid fuels coming into contact
with skin, eyes and clothes or being swal-
lowed.
Do not inhale the fuel vapors. Keep children
away from fuels.
Keep doors and windows closed during the

play audio files from different audio sources,
such as an SD card, a USB storage medium or

Using the steering wheel buttons

the audio source (see the separate operat-

menu.
X To open the track list: press : or 9
briefly.
X To select the next or previous track in
the track list:

X To select a track from the track list
using rapid scrolling: press and hold

If you hold down : or 9, the system
runs through the list more quickly. Not all
audio sources support this function.
If the corresponding track information is
stored on the data carrier, the display may

Always make sure that neither you nor the bat-
tery are electro statically charged.
An electrostatic charge can build up in the fol-
lowing situations:
R wearing synthetic clothing
R friction between clothing and the seat
R dragging or pushing the battery across car-
pet flooring or any other synthetic materials
R by rubbing the battery with a cloth or towels
Comply with the following safety precautions
and take protective measures when handling
batteries. Risk of explosion. Explosive oxyhy-
drogen is produced when batteries
are being charged. Only charge
batteries in well-ventilated areas.
Fire, open flames and smoking are
therefore prohibited when working
on the battery. Avoid creating
sparks.
Battery acid is caustic. Avoid con-
tact with the skin, eyes or clothing.
Wear acid-proof protective gloves.
If skin or clothes are splashed with
acid, neutralize the splashes imme-
diately with soapy water or an acid
neutralizer, and then clean the
affected areas with water. Consult
a doctor if necessary.
Wear eye protection. When mixing
water and acid, the liquid can
splash into your eyes. Rinse acid
splashes to the eyes immediately
with clean water and contact a
doctor immediately.
Keep children at a safe distance.
Children are not able to assess the
dangers posed by batteries and
acid.
When handling batteries, observe
the safety precautions and special
protective measures contained in
this Operator's Manual.

Environmental note Batteries contain pollutants.
It is illegal to dispose of
them with the household
rubbish. They must be col-
lected separately and dis-
posed of in an environmen- tally responsible recycling
system. Dispose of batteries in an
environmentally responsible
manner. Take discharged
batteries to a qualified spe-
cialist workshop or to a col-
lection point for used bat-
teries.
Observe the following notes: R have the batteries recharged more fre-
quently in the following situations:
- if you predominantly drive short distan-
ces.
- if you predominantly drive at low outside
temperatures.
- if you leave the vehicle parked for a
lengthy period.
In order for the batteries to achieve their
maximum possible service life, they must
always be sufficiently charged.
R Consult an authorized Mercedes-Benz Com-
mercial Van Center if you wish to leave your
vehicle parked for a long period of time.
R When you park the vehicle, remove the key
if you do not require any electrical consum-
ers. The vehicle will then use very little
energy, thus conserving battery power.
R If your vehicle requires jump-starting, or if
you wish to provide jump-starting assistance
to another vehicle, only use the jump-start-
ing connection point in the engine compart-
ment
(Y page 272).
R Have the battery removed at a qualified spe-
cialist workshop. Installation locations
Your vehicle may be equipped with the follow-
ing three batteries, depending on the equip-
ment level:
R Starter battery in the seat base of the right-
hand front seat
R Auxiliary battery in the seat base of the
right-hand front seat
R Additional battery in the seat base of the
left-hand front seat Battery

Disconnecting and removing

WARNING
During the charging process, a battery pro-
duces hydrogen gas. If a short circuit occurs
or sparks are created, the hydrogen gas can
ignite. There is a risk of an explosion.
R Make sure that the positive terminal of a
connected battery does not come into
contact with vehicle parts.
R Never place metal objects or tools on a
battery.
R It is important that you observe the
described order of the battery terminals
when connecting and disconnecting a bat-
tery.
R When jump-starting, make sure that the
battery poles with identical polarity are
connected.
R It is particularly important to observe the
described order when connecting and dis-
connecting the jumper cables.
R Never connect or disconnect the battery
terminals while the engine is running. G
WARNING
Battery acid is caustic. There is a risk of
injury.
Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Do
not inhale any battery gases. Do not lean
over the battery. Keep children away from
batteries. Wash away battery acid immedi-
ately with plenty of clean water and seek
medical attention.
! You should have all work involving the bat-
tery carried out at a qualified specialist
workshop.
If, in exceptional circumstances, you need
to disconnect the battery yourself, please
make sure that:
R Secure the vehicle to prevent it from roll-
ing away.
R You have switched off the engine and
removed the key. Make sure the ignition
is switched off. Check to see that there
are no indicator lamps lighting in the instrument cluster. Electronic compo-
nents such as the alternator may other-
wise be damaged.
R After the battery has been disconnected,
the parking brake is automatically
engaged. You can then no longer move
the vehicle.
R For vehicles with automatic transmission,
the transmission is locked in position P
after disconnecting the battery. You can
then no longer move the vehicle.
R You have first removed the negative ter-
minal and then the positive terminal.
Never mix up the terminal clamp discon-
nection/connection order and never mix
up the terminal clamps. The vehicle's
electronics may otherwise be damaged.
The battery and the cover of the positive ter-
minal clamp must be installed securely dur-
ing operation. Seat base (example: right-hand front seat)
The following description on disconnecting
and removing the battery is based upon the
example of the starter battery in the seat base
of the driver's seat. The additional battery is
disconnected and removed in the same way as
the starter battery. The auxiliary battery is
located in the seat base of the left-hand front
seat.
X Switch off all electrical consumers.
X Switch off the engine and remove the key
from the ignition lock.
X Open the front door on the right-hand side.
i To disconnect or remove the additional
battery, open the left-hand front door. The
auxiliary battery is located in the seat base
of the left-hand front seat. 260

Press both latching springs : down and
remove cover ; upwards from the seat
base.
X Remove cover ; by pulling upwards at an
angle from the seat base. Open seat base (example: right-hand front seat)
X Remove screws A from holder B.
X Remove holder B.
X Remove breather hose ? from the top of
the battery.
X Pull the battery out of the seat base until
the negative clamp can be released and
removed.
X Disconnect the negative clamp from nega-
tive terminal =.
X Remove the negative clamp in such a way
that the battery cable terminal no longer
touches negative terminal =. Example: starter battery
X Remove the battery from the seat base and
place it on the door sill panel as shown. If
necessary, hold the battery by handles E.
X Remove the positive clamp cover from posi-
tive terminal C.
X Loosen positive clamp D on positive termi-
nal C. X
Remove positive clamp D in such a way
that the battery cable terminal no longer
touches positive terminal C.
X Lift the battery from the door sill panel by
handles E. Reconnecting and installing

WARNING

! Always connect the battery in the order
described below. Never mix up the terminal
clamp disconnection/connection order and
never mix up the terminal clamps. You may
otherwise damage the vehicle electronics.
Always observe the prescribed positive ter-
minal installation position when doing so.
Otherwise, the positive clamp may come
into contact with vehicle parts. In this case
there is a risk that the vehicle may short-cir-
cuit and catch fire.
The following description on connecting and
installing the battery is based upon the exam-
ple of the starter battery in the seat base of
the right-hand front seat. The additional bat-
tery is connected and installed in the same
way as the starter battery. The auxiliary bat- Battery

Removing and installing the spare
wheel

X Take the lug wrench and auxiliary tool for
the spare wheel lifter out of the vehicle tool
kit
(Y page 270).
X Open the tailgate/rear-end door.
X Carefully pry off protective cap : with a
suitable tool, e.g. a screwdriver. Be careful
not to damage the paintwork or the covering
cap when doing so. X
Push auxiliary tool ; through the opening
into the winch guide.
X Attach wheel bolt wrench = to auxiliary
tool ; for the spare wheel lifter.
X Turn lug wrench = in the direction of
arrow ? until you feel resistance or until
the friction clutch of the winch overwinds.
The spare wheel has been lowered. X
Pull the spare wheel from under the vehicle.
X Press cable B down and place spring D at
an angle against wheel gripper C.
Wheel gripper C is released.
X Pull wheel gripper C out of the wheel
brace.
Installing
i Alloy wheels cannot be transported under
the vehicle. In this case, transport the alloy
wheel on the cargo compartment, and only
wind up cable B.
X Remove lug wrench = and auxiliary tool ;
for the spare wheel lifter from the vehicle
tool kit

(Y page 270).
X Place the wheel on the ground with the
wheel brace pointing upwards.
X Guide wheel gripper C at an angle on wire
B from above into the wheel brace.
X Slide the wheel under the vehicle a little.
X Attach lug wrench = to auxiliary tool ; for
the spare wheel lifter.
X Turn lug wrench = in the direction of arrow
A until you feel resistance and the friction
clutch of the winch overwinds in jerks.
The wheel is firmly secured to the underside
of the vehicle.
X Pull lug wrench = and auxiliary tool ; for
the spare wheel lifter out of the opening for
the winch.
X Close the winch opening with covering
cap :.
X Stow wheel bolt wrench = and auxiliary
tool ; for the spare wheel lifter in the vehi-
cle tool kit.
X Close the tailgate/rear-end door. Spare wheel

inscription on the containers: MB-Freigabe or
MB-Approval (e.g. MB-Freigabe or MB-
Approval 228.5).
You can obtain further information at a quali-
fied specialist workshop.
Additives for approved operating fluids are nei-
ther required nor permitted. Approved fuel
additives are the exception. Additives can
cause engine damage and must therefore not
be added to the operating fluids.
The use of additives is always the responsibil-
ity of the vehicle operator. The use of additives
may result in the restriction or loss of your
Limited Warranty entitlements. Fuel

has been swallowed. Do not induce vomit-
ing.
R Immediately change out of clothing which
has come into contact with fuel.
When handling, storing and disposing of fuels,
please observe the relevant regulations.

Even small amounts of the wrong fuel may

This fuel may contain up to 10% ethanol by
volume. Your vehicle is E10 compatible.
Never refuel with one of the following fuels:
R Diesel
R Gasoline with more than 10% ethanol by
volume, e.g. E15, E20, E85, E100
R Gasoline with more than 3% methanol by
volume, e.g. M15, M30, M50, M85, M100
R Gasoline with additives containing metal
Do not mix fuels such as these with gaso-
line. Gasoline must only be mixed with
cleaning additives recommended by
Mercedes-Benz.
If the wrong fuel was accidentally used for
refueling:
R Do not switch on the ignition.
R Consult a qualified specialist workshop.
Information on fuel additives (Y page 307). If the available fuel is not sufficiently low in
sulfur, this can produce unpleasant odors. 306
