Activating instrument cluster display
The display for temperature, odometer, oil level
indicator and clock is activated by:
•Opening the driver’s door.
•Pressing button (1) in the instrument cluster (with
key removed or in steering lock position 0).
•Turning the key in steering lock to position 1 or 2.Display illumination
Rotate knob (1) to vary intensity of instrument lamps:
•Clockwise - instrument lamp intensity increases.
•Counterclockwise - instrument lamp intensity
decreases.
Odometer/trip odometer
Activate the instrument cluster.
•Press knob (1) once to switch to or from odometer to
trip odometer readout.
•Press and hold knob (1) for more than 1 second to
reset trip odometer (with trip odometer displayed).
•Press knob (1) twice to display next scheduled
service.
Clock
Adjusting clock (instrument cluster activated):
Minute: Pull out knob (2) and turn it to the right.
Hour: Pull out knob (2) and turn it to the left.

Emergency operation of sliding/pop-up roof
The sliding / pop-up roof can be opened or closed
manually should an electrical malfunction occur.
The sliding / pop-up roof drive is located behind the
cover between the front interior lamps.
1. Open cover by using a f lat blade screw driver at top
edge.
2. Obtain crank (supplied with vehicle) and insert in
hexagon drive hole, located at rear end of the open
cover.Note:
Push crank upward while turning it, to disengage the
electric motor.
To slide the roof closed or to raise the roof at the rear:
turn crank clockwise.
To slide the roof open or to lower the roof at the rear:
turn crank counterclockwise.
Important!
After manually operating the sliding / pop-up roof, a
timing synchronization is needed for future electrical
operation of the roof. To do so, remove fuse for sliding/
pop-up roof operation, located in fuse box, for one
second and reinstall. Now push and hold switch until
the sliding / pop-up roof is fully raised. Continue to hold
switch for another second.

Activating instrument cluster display
The display for temperature, odometer, oil level

Mercedes-Benz - Air Bag Restraint Systems
DESCRIPTION & OPERATION
All models are equipped with Supplemental Restraint System (SRS). The main components of SRS are driver-
side air bag module, passenger-side air bag module, side impact air bag modules (located in doors), SRS control
module, side air bag sensors, SRS warning light, driver-side knee bolster, passenger-side knee bolster and seat
belt pretensioners or Emergency Tensioning Retractor (ETR) seat belt assembly. Additionally, some vehicles
may be equipped with head impact (curtain type) air bags.
Both SRS and ETR are electronically activated by a single control module. There are 2 thresholds which must
be exceeded to trigger an ETR action, air bag deployment, or both. If a moderately severe frontal collision
occurs exceeding first triggering threshold where protection from seat belt is sufficient, only Emergency
Tensioning Retractor (ETR) is activated if seat belt is buckled. If a moderately severe frontal collision occurs
exceeding first triggering threshold where protection from seat belt is sufficient, but seat belt is not buckled, air
bag is deployed and ETR is not activated.
If a severe frontal collision occurs exceeding second triggering threshold where protection from seat belt is
insufficient, air bag is deployed. ETR is activated if seat belt is buckled. If seat belt is not buckled, ETR is not
activated when second triggering threshold is reached. Passenger air bag will deploy even if passenger seat is
not occupied when a triggering threshold is exceeded. During certain types of collisions, the air bags will be
deploy, but ETRs will not be activated.
The side air bag on the driver-side deploys whenever the driver-side air bag module is deployed and when there
is a substantial side impact crash. The air bag on the passenger-side will activate only when a sensor (Occupied
Seat Recognition Sensor) in the passenger seat sends a signal to the SRS control module that the passenger-side
seat is occupied. Side air bags mounted in rear doors will deploy when side impacts occur that exceed preset
parameters.
Head impact air bag modules will deploy when certain side impacts occur that exceed preset parameters. Head
impact air bag will deploy independently of other air bags on side of impact.

ter display.

Press and hold the left knob1 until
the trip odometer is reset.
Tachometer
To help protect the engine, the fuel supply
is interrupted if the engine is operated
above its specified limit.
Outside temperature indicator
The outside temperature is displayed in
the instrument cluster (
page 24).
When moving the vehicle into colder ambi-
ent temperatures (e.g. when leaving your
garage), you will notice a delay before the
lower temperature is displayed.
A delay also occurs when ambient temper-
atures rise. This prevents inaccurate tem-
perature indications caused by heat
radiated from the engine during idling or
slow driving.
Setting the clock
Hour
Pull out the right knob2 in the instru-
ment cluster (
page 116) and turn it
counterclockwise.
Minutes

Warning!

The outside temperature indicator is not de-
signed to serve as an ice-warning device and
is therefore unsuitable for that purpose.
Indicated temperatures just above the freez-
ing point do not guarantee that the road sur-
face is free of ice. The road may still be icy,
especially in wooded areas or on bridges.
iTo set the clock by a single hour or a
few minutes, turn knob2 just a few
degrees in the direction indicated for
hours or minutes.

Install inner cover (E) at 60 % bench

Insert cover past the springs from the rear

and rotate into position in a clockwise

direction. Insert locating tabs (19). Press the

front cover down and reset so that locating

tabs (20) engage. Press rear cover down until

locating tabs (18) engage.

Install outer cover (D) at 60 % bench

Guide the cover past the lateral curtain.

Insert locating tab (17), push front cover down

and reset so that locating tabs (16) engage.

Press the outer edge of the cover down and

insert lateral locating tabs (15). Raise rear
cover on the inside, press down until locating

tab (14) and rear locating tab (13) engage.

Install curtain at front 60 % bench

Insert cover from the front and insert

locating tabs (11). Press the front cover down

and reset so that locating tabs (12) engage.

Install outer cover (B) at 40 % bench
Guide the cover past the lateral curtain.

Insert locating tab (10), push front cover down

and reset so that locating tab (9) engages.

Press the outer edge of the cover down and

insert lateral locating tabs (8). Insert locating

tab (7), push cover down at locating tab (6)

and engage.

Insert cover from the rear and press down

and forwards so that locating tabs (5) engage.

Press front ends of the cover down, so that

locating tabs (2, 3, 4) engage. Insert locating

tabs (1) into covers (C, E).

3. Normalize side power windows. See NORMALIZING POWER WINDOWS .
4. Start engine and run at idle. Turn steering wheel from one lock position to the other to activate steering
angle sensor. Center steering wheel. Message "EI. STAB. PROGRAM GO TO GARAGE" should erase
from multifunction display panel.
5. If equipped, normalize tilting/sliding roof. See NORMALIZING TILTING/SLIDING ROOF
.
6. If equipped, normalize memory power seats, steering column and outside mirror if components are
installed. See NORMALIZING MEMORY POWER SEATS, STEERING COLUMN & OUTSIDE
MIRROR .
Normalizing Power Windows
1. Completely close each window with manual switch. Hold switch in closed position for .3 second.
2. Repeat procedure for each power window.
Normalizing Memory Power Seats, Steering Column & Outside Mirror
1. Using manual switch, move seat to each end position and hold for .3 second. Repeat procedure for each
switch except rear stop of backrest.
2. Repeat procedure for end positions of steering wheel and outside mirrors.
Normalizing Tilting/Sliding Roof
Open roof with SR switch until mechanical stop is reached. Continue to press switch for .5 seconds.
Setting Time
1. Use bottom left button on steering wheel to scroll through menus on instrument cluster to "Settings"
menu.
2. Move selection marker with + or - button to "Time" submenu.
3. Press up or down arrows to "Clock, hours" setting. Confirm selection marker is on the hour setting.
4. Press + or - to set hour. Press reset knob in instrument cluster to confirm.
5. Move selection marker with + or - button to "Time" submenu.
6. Press up or down arrows to "Clock, minutes" setting. Confirm selection marker is on the minutes setting.
7. Press + or - to set minute. Press reset knob in instrument cluster to confirm.
TESTING
If generator malfunctions, check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) in Motor Electronics Sequential Fuel
Injection (ME-SFI) system. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTICS article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If
cause of generator malfunction is not engine performance related, replace generator.
RETRIEVING & ERASING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
NOTE: Before replacing any component that scan tool suggests are faulty, ensure that
all wiring connections and harness connectors are okay. Ensure that power and
