You can unlock and open the tailgate sep-
arately.
A minimum height clearance of 7.2 ft
(2.20 m) is required to open the tailgate.
The handle is located above the rear

matically. Always make sure there is
sufficient overhead clearance.
Vehicles with tailgate opening/closing
system*:
To stop the opening procedure, press
buttonŠ on the SmartKey. The tail-
gate stops moving.iIf the vehicle was previously centrally
locked with the SmartKey or
KEYLESS-GO, the tailgate will lock au-
tomatically when closed (
page 124).
The turn signals will flash three times to
confirm locking.

Locking and unlocking
Loss of the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO
If you lose your SmartKey with
KEYLESS-GO or mechanical key, you
should do the following:
Have the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO
deactivated by an authorized
Mercedes-Benz Light Truck Center.

Report the loss of the SmartKey with
KEYLESS-GO or the mechanical key im-
mediately to your car insurance com-
pany.

Have the mechanical lock replaced if
necessary.
Your authorized Mercedes-Benz Light
Truck Center will be glad to supply you
with a replacement.
Opening the doors from the inside
You can open a locked door from the in-
side. Open door only when conditions are
safe to do so.

If the door was locked, locking knob1
will move up.
Rear doors

Pull up locking knob1 on the respec-
tive rear door to unlock door.

Opening the tailgate from the outside

Vehicles without KEYLESS-GO*:
The vehicle must be unlocked (
page 37).

Pull on the handle.
The tailgate opens slightly.

Pull tailgate upwards to open.The tailgate can also be opened using the
SmartKey (
page 114).
iIf the vehicle has previously been
locked from the outside with the
SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO*, opening a
door from the inside will trigger the
anti-theft alarm system.
To cancel the alarm, do one of the
following:
With the SmartKey

Insert the SmartKey in the starter
switch.


Press theŒ or ‹button on
the SmartKey.
With KEYLESS-GO*


Grasp an outside door handle.


Press the KEYLESS-GO start/stop
button (
page 40).
The SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO
must be inside the vehicle.

Opening the tailgate from the inside
manually
You can unlock the tailgate from the
third-row seats and then open it manually.
The handle is located on the right of the
tailgate’s window trim.

Opening the tailgate from the inside
electrically*
You can open the tailgate from the inside if
the vehicle is stationary.
A minimum height clearance of 7.2 ft
(2.20 m) is required to open the tailgate.
The switch is located on the door control

Pull remote tailgate switch1 until
tailgate begins to open.
The tailgate opens. The indicator lamp
in the remote tailgate switch comes on
and remains lit until the tailgate is
closed. While the tailgate is opening, an
acoustic signal sounds.
iVehicles with tailgate opening/closing
system*:
If you do not open the tailgate within a
few seconds, the tailgate lock will auto-
matically engage again.

Limiting opening height of tailgate*
Vehicles with tailgate opening/closing
system*:
The tailgate opening height can be limited
when transporting goods on a roof rack*
(e.g. presence of an MB sport luggage con-
tainer*). When activated, the tailgate
opens to approximately 6.4 ft (1.95 m).
Activate the limiting opening height of
tailgate using the control system
(page 189).
Closing the tailgate
Closing the tailgate from the inside
electrically*
In vehicles with tailgate opening/closing
system* you can close the tailgate from
the inside using the remote tailgate switch.
Press remote tailgate switch1
(page 123) until tailgate begins to
close.
The tailgate closes. The indicator lamp
in the remote tailgate switch goes out.
While the tailgate is closing an acoustic
signal sounds.
To interrupt the closing procedure:

Press or pull remote tailgate switch1
(page 123).

the vehicle while operating the tailgate with
the door-mounted remote tailgate switch or
with the Šbutton on the SmartKey or
SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO*. Monitor the
opening procedure carefully to make sure
no one is in danger of being injured.

pull the door-mounted remote tailgate
switch or press the Šbutton on the
SmartKey or SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO*.!The tailgate swings open upwards auto-

object while closing (e.g. luggage that has
been piled too high) the closing procedure
is stopped and the tailgate reopens.Closing the tailgate from the outside

To interrupt the closing procedure, press or
pull the door mounted remote tailgate
switch.
Even with the SmartKey or the SmartKey
with KEYLESS-GO* removed from the
starter switch or the SmartKey with
KEYLESS-GO* removed from the vehicle,
the remote tailgate switch can be operated.
Therefore, do not leave children unattended
in the vehicle, or with access to an unlocked
vehicle. Unsupervised use of vehicle equip-
ment may cause an accident and/or serious
personal injury.

among other dangers such as blocked
visibility, exhaust fumes may enter the
vehicle interior.

Closing the tailgate from the outside
(vehicles without KEYLESS-GO*)
In vehicles with tailgate opening/closing
system* you can close the tailgate sepa-
rately from the outside using the tailgate
closing switch or the Šbutton on the
SmartKey.

To prevent possible personal injury, always
keep hands and fingers away from the cargo
compartment opening when closing the tail-
gate. Be especially careful when small chil-
dren are around.
When leaving the vehicle, always remove the
SmartKey or SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO*
from the starter switch, take it with you, and
lock the vehicle. Do not leave children unat-
tended in the vehicle, or with access to an
unlocked vehicle. Unsupervised use of vehi-
cle equipment may cause an accident
and/or serious personal injury.Warning!

Only drive with the tailgate closed as,
among other dangers such as blocked
visibility, exhaust fumes may enter the
vehicle interior.
iTo prevent an inadvertent lockout, do
not place the SmartKey in the cargo
compartment.
Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO*:
To prevent a possible inadvertent lock-
out, the tailgate will open automatically
if a SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is
recognized inside the vehicle.iIf the vehicle was previously centrally
locked with the SmartKey or
KEYLESS-GO, the tailgate will lock
automatically after closing it. The turn
signals flash three times to confirm
locking.

neously from the outside using the
KEYLESS-GO* locking/closing switch or
the Šbutton on the SmartKey.

The vehicle is locked and the tailgate
closes automatically. The turn signals

The locking knobs in the doors move
down. The anti-theft alarm system is
armed.
