i The SmartKey can be turned in the ignition
lock even if it is not the correct SmartKey for
the vehicle. The ignition is not switched on.
The engine cannot be started.
KEYLESS-GO
General notes Vehicles with KEYLESS-GO are equipped with a
SmartKey featuring an integrated KEYLESS-GO
start function and ad etachable Start/Stop but-
ton.
The Start/Stop button must be inserted in the
ignition lock and the SmartKey must be in the
vehicle.
When you insert the Start/Stop button into the
ignition lock, the system needs approximately
two seconds recognition time. You can then use
the Start/Stop button.
Pressing the Start/Stop button several times in
succession corresponds to the differen tk ey
positions in the ignition lock. This is only the
case if you are not depressing the brake pedal. If you depress the brake pedal and press the
Start/Stop button ,t he engine start si mmedi-
ately.
Ac heck which periodically establishes ar adio
connection between the vehicle and the Smart-
Key determines whether av alid SmartKey is in
the vehicle. This occurs ,f or example, when
starting the engine.
To start the vehicle without actively using the
SmartKey: R
the Start/Stop button must be inserted in the
ignition lock. R
the SmartKey must be in the vehicle. R
the vehicle must not be locked with the
SmartKey or KEYLESS-GO ( Y
page 63).
Do not keep the SmartKey: R
with electronic devices, e.g. am obile phone
or another SmartKey. R
with metallic objects, e.g. coins or metal foil. R
inside metallic objects, e.g. am etal case.
This can impair the functionality of the KEY-
LESS-GO key.
If you lock the vehicle with the SmartKey's
remot ec ontrol or with KEYLESS-GO, after a
short time: R
you will not be able to switch on the ignition
with the Start/Stop button. R
you will not be able to start the engine with the
Start/Stop button until the vehicle is
unlocked again.
The engine can be switched off while the vehicle
is in motion by pressing and holding the Start/
Stop button for three seconds. This function
operates independently of the ECO start/stop
automatic engine switch-off function.

SmartKey must be in the vehicle. This mode for
starting the engine operates independently of
the ECO start/stop automatic engine start func-

Pulling away
General notes
G WARNING
If the engine spee disa bove the idling speed
and you engage transmission position D or R ,
the vehicl ec ould pul la wa ys uddenly .T here is

When engaging transmission position D or R ,
alway sf irmly depress the brake peda la nd do
not simultaneously accelerate. ! Change gea ring ood time and avoi ds pin-
ning the wheels. You could otherwise damage
the vehicle.
Depress the accelerator carefully when pulling
away.
The vehicl el ocks centrally once you have pulled
away. The locking knobs in the doors drop down.
You can open the doors from the insid eata ny
time.
You can als od eactivate the automatic locking
feature ( Y

It is only possible to shift the transmission from
position P to the desired position if you depress
the brake pedal. Only then is the shift lock
released.
i Upshifts take place at highe re ngine speeds
after ac old start. This help st he catalytic con-
verter to reach its operating temperature
more quickly.

Hill start assist Hill start assist help sy ou when pulling awa yf or-
ward sorinr everse on an uphill gradient. It holds
the vehicl ef or as hort time after you have
removed you rf oot from the brake pedal. This
gives you enoug ht ime to move you rf oot from
the brake peda ltot he accelerator peda la nd to
depress it before the vehicl eb egins to roll.
G WARNING
After as hort time, hill start assist wil lnol on-
ger brake you rv ehicl ea nd it could roll away.
There is ar isk of an accident and injury.
Therefore, quickly move you rf oot from the
brake peda ltot he accelerator pedal. Never
leave the vehicl ew hen it is held by hill start
assist.
Hill start assist is not active if: R
you are pulling awa yonal evel road or on a
downhill gradient. R
the transmission is in position N .R

Introduction The ECO start/sto pf unction switches the
engine off automaticall yift he vehicle is stopped

Important safety notes
G WARNING
If th ee ngine is switched off automaticall ya nd
you exi tt he vehicle ,t he engine is restarted
automatically. The vehicle may begin moving.

If you wish to exi tt he vehicle ,a lways tur no ff
th ei gnition and secure th ev ehicle against
rolling away.

The ECO start/sto pf unction is activated when-
ever you switch on th ee ngine usin gt he Smart-
Key or th eS ta rt/Sto pb utton.
If th ee ngine has been switched off automati-
cally by th eE CO start/sto pf unction ,t he

Only depress the accelerator pedal slightly.
Otherwise, non-combusted fuel may get into the catalytic converter
and damage it. X

If the coolant level is correct ,t he engine radiator fan may be faulty. The
coolant is too hot and the engine is no longer being cooled sufficiently. X
At coolant temperatures below 248 ‡( 120 †), drive to the nearest
qualified specialist workshop. X
Avoid heavy loads on the engine as you do so, e.g. driving in moun-
tainou st errai na nd stop-and-go traffic.
DYNAMIC SELEC Tb uttonUse the DYNAMIC SELECT button to change the
drive program. Depending on the drive program

Each time you start the engine with the Smart-
Key or the Start/Stop button, drive program C is
activated. For further information about starting
the engine, see ( Y
pag e1 16).

Press DYNAMIC SELECT button C as many
times as necessary until the desired drive
progra miss elected.
The selected drive progra ma ppears in the
multifunction display. After as hort time the displa yg oes out and the status icon of the
selected drive progra ma ppears.
In addition, the current drive progra ms ettings
are displayed briefly in the multimedi as ystem
display.
i In af ew countries, the ECO start/stop func-
tion is deactivated at the factory due to the
available fuel grade. In this case, the ECO
start/stop function is not available in any
drive program, regardless of the displa yint he
multimedi as ystem display.

er's door or the front-passenger door or remove
the SmartKey from the ignition, the automatic
transmission shifts to P automatically.
With KEYLESS-GO: if you then open the driver's
or front-passenger door, the automatic trans-
mission shifts to P .
If you want the automatic transmission to

Refueling
Important safety notes
G WARNING
Fuel is highly flammable. If you handle fuel
incorrectly, there is ar isk of fire and explo-
sion.
You must avoid fire, open flames, creating
sparks and smoking. Switch off the engine
and, if applicable, the auxiliary heating before
refueling.
G WARNING
Fuel is poisonous and hazardous to health.
There is ar isk of injury.
You must make sure that fuel does not come
into contact with your skin, eyes or clothing
and that it is not swallowed. Do not inhale fuel
vapors. Keep fuel away from children.
If you or others come into contact with fuel,
observe the following: R
Wash away fuel from skin immediately
using soap and water. R
If fuel comes into contact with your eyes,
immediately rinse them thoroughly with clean water. Seek medical assistance with-
out delay. R
If fuel is swallowed, seek medical assis-
tance without delay .Don ot induce vomit-
ing. R
Immediately change out of clothing which
has come into contact with fuel.
G WARNING
Electrostatic buildu pc an create sparks and
ignite fuel vapors. There is ar isk of fire and
explosion.
Always touch the vehicle body before opening
the fuel filler flap or touching the fuel pump
nozzle. Any existing electrostatic buildu pi s
thereby discharged.
Do not get into the vehicle again during the refu-
eling process. Otherwise, electrostatic charge
could build up again.
! Do not use diesel to refuel vehicles with a
gasoline engine. Do not switch on the ignition
if you accidentally refuel with the wrong fuel.
Otherwise, the fuel will enter the fuel system.
Even small amounts of the wrong fuel could
result in damage to the fuel system and the
engine. Notify aq ualified specialist workshop
and have the fuel tank and fuel lines drained
