Important safety notes
GWARNING
When you drive in emergency mode, the
handling characteristics are impaired. e.g.
when cornering, when accelerating strongly
and when braking. There is a risk of an acci-
dent.
Do not exceed the maximum specified
speed. Avoid any abrupt steering and driving
maneuvers as well as driving over obstacles
(curbs, pot holes, off-road). This applies, in
particular, to a loaded vehicle.
Stop driving in emergency mode if you
notice:
Rbanging noise
Rvehicle vibration
Rsmoke which smells like rubber
Rcontinuous ESP®intervention
Rcracks in the tire side walls
After driving in emergency mode, have the
rims checked by a qualified specialist work-
shop with regard to their further use. The
defective tire must be replaced in every
case.
TIREFIT kit
Important safety notes
TIREFIT is a tire sealant.
You can use TIREFIT to seal punctures of up to0.16 in (4 mm), particularly those in the tiretread. You can use TIREFIT at outside tempera-tures down to

XWhen the tire pressure is correct, unscrewthe filler hose from the valve of the sealedtire.
XScrew the valve cap onto the tire valve ofthe sealed tire.
XTo remove the tire sealant bottle from thetire inflation compressor, press together thelocking tabs on the yellow cap.
XPull the tire sealant bottle out of the tireinflation compressor.
The filler hose remains attached to the tiresealant bottle.
XDrive to the nearest qualified specialistworkshop and have the tire changed there.
XHave the tire sealant bottle and the fillerhose replaced as soon as possible at aqualified specialist workshop.
XHave the tire sealant bottle replaced everyfour years at a qualified specialist workshop.
Battery (vehicle)
Important safety notes
Special tools and expert knowledge arerequired when working on the battery, e.g.removal and installation. You should thereforehave all work involving the battery carried outat a qualified specialist workshop.
GWARNING
Work carried out incorrectly on the battery
can lead, for example, to a short circuit and
thus damage the vehicle electronics. This
can lead to function restrictions applying to
safety-relevant systems, e.g. the lighting
system, the ABS (anti-lock braking system)
or the ESP®(Electronic Stability Program).
The operating safety of your vehicle may be
restricted.
You could lose control of the vehicle, for
example:
Rwhen braking
Rin the event of abrupt steering maneuvers
and/or when the vehicle's speed is not
adapted to the road conditions
There is a risk of an accident.
In the event of a short circuit or a similar
incident, contact a qualified specialist work-
shop immediately. Do not drive any further.
You should have all work involving the bat-
tery carried out at a qualified specialist
workshop.

GWARNING
Electrostatic build-up can lead to the crea-
tion of sparks, which could ignite the highly
explosive gases of a battery. There is a risk
of an explosion.
Before handling the battery, touch the vehi-
cle body to remove any existing electrostatic
build-up.
The highly flammable gas mixture forms whencharging the battery as well as when jump-starting.

Always make sure that neither you nor the bat-tery is electrostatically charged. A build-up ofelectrostatic charge can be caused, for exam-ple:
Rby wearing clothing made from syntheticfibers
Rdue to friction between clothing and seats
Rif you push or pull the battery across thecarpet or other synthetic materials
Rif you wipe the battery with a cloth
GWARNING
During the charging process, a battery pro-
duces hydrogen gas. If a short circuit occurs
or sparks are created, the hydrogen gas can
ignite. There is a risk of an explosion.
RMake sure that the positive terminal of a
connected battery does not come into
contact with vehicle parts.
RNever place metal objects or tools on a
battery.
RIt is important that you observe the
described order of the battery terminals
when connecting and disconnecting a bat-
tery.
RWhen jump-starting, make sure that the
battery poles with identical polarity are
connected.
RIt is particularly important to observe the
described order when connecting and dis-
connecting the jumper cables.
RNever connect or disconnect the battery
terminals while the engine is running.
GWARNING
Battery acid is caustic. There is a risk of
injury.
Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Do
not inhale any battery gases. Do not lean
over the battery. Keep children away from
batteries. Wash away battery acid immedi-
ately with plenty of clean water and seek
medical attention.
HEnvironmental note
Batteries contain pollutants.
It is illegal to dispose of
them with the household
rubbish. They must be col-
lected separately and dis-
posed of in an environmen-
tally responsible recycling
system.
Dispose of batteries in an
environmentally responsible
manner. Take discharged
batteries to a qualified spe-
cialist workshop or to a col-
lection point for used bat-
teries.
!Have the battery regularly checked at aqualified specialist workshop.
Comply with the service intervals in theMaintenance Booklet, or contact a qualifiedspecialist workshop for more information.
!Always have work on batteries carried outat a qualified specialist workshop.
Should it, in exceptional circumstances, beabsolutely necessary to disconnect the 12-volt battery yourself, please observe the fol-lowing:
RSecure the vehicle to prevent it from roll-ing away.
RSwitch off the ignition.
RDisconnect the negative terminal first andthen the positive terminal.
The transmission is locked in position]after disconnecting the battery.
After the work has been done, install thebattery and replace the cover of the positiveterminal clamp firmly.
Comply with safety precautions and take pro-tective measures when handling batteries.
Risk of explosion.
Fire, open flames and smoking areprohibited when handling the bat-tery. Avoid creating sparks.

Battery acid is caustic. Avoid con-tact with skin, eyes or clothing.
Wear suitable protective clothing,especially gloves, apron and face-guard.
Rinse any acid spills immediatelywith clear water. Contact a physi-cian if necessary.

For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom-mends that you only use batteries which havebeen tested and approved for your vehicle byMercedes-Benz. These batteries provideincreased impact protection to prevent vehicleoccupants from suffering acid burns shouldthe battery be damaged in the event of anaccident.
In order for the battery to achieve the maxi-mum possible service life, it must always besufficiently charged.
Like other batteries, the vehicle battery maydischarge over time if you do not use the vehi-cle. In this case, have the battery disconnec-ted at a qualified specialist workshop. You canalso charge the battery with a charger recom-mended by Mercedes-Benz. Contact a quali-fied specialist workshop for further informa-tion.
Have the battery condition of charge checkedmore frequently if you use the vehicle mainlyfor short trips or if you leave it standing idlefor a lengthy period. Consult a qualified spe-cialist workshop if you wish to leave your vehi-cle parked for a long period of time.
Remove the SmartKey if you park the vehicleand do not require any electrical consumers.The vehicle will then use very little energy,thus conserving battery power.
If the power supply has been interrupted, e.g.if you reconnect the battery, you will have to:
Rreset the function for automatically foldingthe exterior mirrors in/out by folding themirrors out once (Ypage 93)
Rset the clock
On vehicles with a multimedia system, thetime is set automatically.
Charging the battery
GWARNING
During charging and jump-starting, explosive
gases can escape from the battery. There is
a risk of an explosion.
Particularly avoid fire, open flames, creating
sparks and smoking. Ensure there is suffi-
cient ventilation while charging and jump-
starting. Do not lean over a battery.
GWARNING
Battery acid is caustic. There is a risk of

Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing. Do
not inhale any battery gases. Do not lean
over the battery. Keep children away from
batteries. Wash away battery acid immedi-
ately with plenty of clean water and seek
medical attention.
GWARNING
A discharged battery can freeze at tempera-
tures below freezing point. When jump-start-
ing the vehicle or charging the battery,
gases can escape from the battery. There is
a risk of an explosion.
Allow the frozen battery to thaw out before
charging it or jump-starting.
!Only use battery chargers with a maximumcharging voltage of 14.8V.
!Onlycharge the battery using the jump-starting connection point.
The jump-starting connection point is in theengine compartment.

The brackets for the screw-in towing eye arelocated in the bumpers. They are at the frontand at the rear, behind the covers.
XRemove the towing eye from the vehicle toolkit (Ypage 252).
XPress the mark on coverCinwards in thedirection of the arrow.
XTake coverCoff the opening.
XScrew in the towing eye clockwise as far asit will go and tighten it.
Removing the towing eye
XUnscrew and remove the towing eye.
XAttach coverCto the bumper and pressuntil it engages.
XPlace the towing eye in the vehicle tool kit.
Towing a vehicle with both axles on
the ground
GWARNING
You can no longer steer the vehicle if the
steering wheel lock has been engaged.
There is a risk of an accident.
Always switch off the ignition when towing
the vehicle with a tow cable or a tow bar.
The automatic transmission shifts to position]automatically when you open the driver'sor front-passenger door or when you removethe SmartKey from the ignition lock.
In order to ensure that the automatic trans-mission stays in position\\when towingaway the vehicle, you must observe the follow-ing points:
XSwitch on the hazard warning lamps(Ypage 99).
XTurn the SmartKey to positionHin the igni-tion lock.
On vehicles with KEYLESS-GO, use theSmartKey instead of the Start/Stop button(Ypage 118).
XDepress and hold the brake pedal.
XShift the transmission to position\\.
XRelease the brake pedal.
XRelease the electric parking brake.
XLeave the SmartKey in positionHin theignition lock.
In order to signal a change of direction whentowing the vehicle with the hazard warninglamps switched on, use the combinationswitch as usual. In this case, only the indicatorlamps for the direction of travel flash. Whenyou reset the combination switch, the hazardwarning flashers start flashing again.
It is important that you observe the safetyinstructions when towing away your vehicle(Ypage 263).
Permitted towing methods
Mercedes-Benz recommends transporting yourvehicle in the case of a breakdown, rather thantowing it away.
When towing away, use a towing rope or atowing bar with both axles on the ground. Donot use any tow bar systems.
Towing the vehicle with the rear axle
raised
!The ignition must be switched off if youare towing the vehicle with the rear axle
raised. Intervention by ESP®could other-wise damage the brake system.
!Vehicles with automatic transmission mustnot be towed with the rear axle raised. Thevehicle/trailer combination may otherwiseswerve or even roll over.

Breakdown assistance

Check wheels and tires for damage at leastonce a month. Check wheels and tires afterdriving off-road or on rough roads. Damagedwheels can cause a loss of tire pressure. Payparticular attention to damage such as:
Rcuts in the tires
Rpunctures in the tires
Rtears in the tires
Rbulges on tires
Rdeformation or severe corrosion on wheels
Regularly check the tire tread depth and thecondition of the tread across the whole widthof all tires (Ypage 268). If necessary, turn thefront wheels to full lock in order to inspect theinner side of the tire surface.
All wheels must have a valve cap to protectthe valve against dirt and moisture. Do notmount anything onto the valve other than thestandard valve cap or other valve capsapproved by Mercedes-Benz for your vehicle.Do not use any other valve caps or systems,e.g. tire pressure monitoring systems.
Regularly check the pressure of all the tiresparticularly prior to long trips. Adjust the tirepressure as necessary (Ypage 270).
Observe the notes on the emergency sparewheel (Ypage 293).
The service life of tires depends, among otherthings, on the following factors:
RDriving style
RTire pressure
RDistance covered
Notes on tire tread
GWARNING
If there is insufficient tire tread, the tire trac-
tion decreases. The tire tread is no longer
able to dissipate water. This increases the
risk of hydroplaning when the road surface
is wet, particularly when the vehicle's speed
is not adapted to the road conditions. There
is a risk of an accident.
When the tire pressure is too high or too
low, tires may wear differently at different
points on the tire tread. Therefore, regularly
check the tire tread depth and the condition
of the tread across the whole width of all
tires.
Minimum tire tread depth on:
RSummer tires:

RDo not drive with tires which have too littletread depth. This significantly reduces thetraction on wet roads (hydroplaning).
RReplace the tires after six years at the lat-est, regardless of wear.
MOExtended tires (tires with run-flat
properties)
With MOExtended tires (tires with run flatcharacteristics), you can continue to drive yourvehicle even if there is a total loss of pressurein one or more tires.
MOExtended tires may only be used in con-junction with an active tire pressure loss warn-ing system or with an active tire pressure mon-itor and on wheels specifically tested byMercedes-Benz.
Notes on driving with MOExtended tires with aflat tire (Ypage 253).
Vehicles equipped with MOExtended tires arenot equipped with a TIREFIT kit at the factory.It is therefore recommended that you addition-ally equip your vehicle with a TIREFIT kit if youmount tires that do not feature run-flat charac-teristics, e.g. winter tires. A TIREFIT kit can beobtained from a qualified specialist workshop.
Winter operation
General notes
Have your vehicle winter-proofed at a qualifiedspecialist workshop at the onset of winter.
Observe the notes in the "Changing a wheel"section (Ypage 288).
Driving with summer tires
At temperatures below 45 ‡ (+7 †), summertires lose elasticity and therefore traction andbraking power. Change the tires on your vehi-cle to M+S tires. Using summer tires at verycold temperatures could cause cracks to form,thereby damaging the tires permanently.Mercedes-Benz cannot accept responsibilityfor this type of damage.
GWARNING
Damaged tires can cause tire inflation pres-
sure loss. As a result, you could lose control
of your vehicle. There is a risk of accident.
Check the tires regularly for signs of dam-
age and replace any damaged tires immedi-
ately.
M+S tires
GWARNING
M+S tires with a tire tread depth of less than

Snow chains
GWARNING
If snow chains are installed to the front
wheels, they may drag against the vehicle
body or chassis components. This could
cause damage to the vehicle or the tires.
There is a risk of an accident.
To avoid hazardous situations:
Rnever install snow chains to the front
wheels
Ralways install snow chains in pairs to the
rear wheels.
For safety reasons, Mercedes-Benz recom-mends that you only use snow chains thathave been specially approved for your vehicleby Mercedes-Benz, or are of a correspondingstandard of quality. For more information,please contact a qualified specialist workshop.
If you intend to mount snow chains, pleasebear the following points in mind:
RSnow chains may not be mounted on allwheel/tire combinations. Permissiblewheel-tire combinations (Ypage 292).
ROnly use snow chains when driving on roadscompletely covered by snow. Remove thesnow chains as soon as possible when youcome to a road that is not snow-covered.
RLocal regulations may restrict the use ofsnow chains. Observe the appropriate regu-lations if you wish to mount snow chains.
RDo not exceed the maximum permissiblespeed of 30 mph (50 km/h).
You may wish to deactivate ESP®when pullingaway with snow chains installed (Ypage 61).You can thereby allow the wheels to spin in acontrolled manner, achieving an increaseddriving force (cutting action).

Important safety notes
GWARNING
Underinflated or overinflated tires pose the
following risks:
Rthe tires may burst, especially as the load
and vehicle speed increase.
Rthe tires may wear excessively and/or
unevenly, which may greatly impair tire
traction.
Rthe driving characteristics, as well as
steering and braking, may be greatly
impaired.
There is a risk of an accident.
Follow recommended tire inflation pressures
and check the pressure of all the tires
including the spare wheel:
Rmonthly, at least
Rif the load changes
Rbefore beginning a long journey
Runder different operating conditions, e.g.
off-road driving
If necessary, correct the tire pressure.

Avoid tire pressures that are too high in all
the tires, including the spare wheel.
Overinflated tires may:
Rincrease the braking distance
Radversely affect handling
Rwear excessively and/or unevenly
Rhave an adverse effect on ride comfort
Rbe more susceptible to damage
Maximum tire pressures
CExample: maximum permissible tire pres-sure
Never exceed the maximum permissible tireinflation pressure. Always observe the recom-mended tire pressure for your vehicle whenadjusting the tire pressure (Ypage 270).

Checking the tire pressures

The tire pressure monitor does not warn youof:
Rincorrectly set tire pressure
Rsudden loss of tire pressure, e.g. from a for-eign object that has penetrated the tire

Checking tire pressures manually
To determine and set the correct tire pressure,proceed as follows:
XRemove the valve cap of the tire that is tobe checked.
XPress the tire pressure gauge securely ontothe valve.
XRead the tire pressure and compare it to therecommended value on the Tire and LoadingInformation placard or the tire pressuretable (Ypage 270).
XIf the tire pressure is too low, increase thetire pressure to the recommended value.
XIf the tire pressure is too high, release air.To do so, press down the metal pin in thevalve, using the tip of a pen for example.Then check the tire pressure again using thetire pressure checker.
XScrew the valve cap onto the valve.
XRepeat these steps for the other tires.
Tire pressure loss warning system
(Canada only)
General notes
While the vehicle is in motion, the tire pres-sure loss warning system monitors the set tirepressure using the rotational speed of thewheels. This enables the system to detect sig-nificant pressure loss in a tire. If the speed ofrotation of a wheel changes as a result of aloss of pressure, a corresponding warningmessage will appear in the multifunction dis-play.
You can recognize the tire pressure loss warn-ing by theRun Flat Indicator ActiveRun Flat Indicator ActivePress 'OK' to RestartPress 'OK' to Restartmessage whichappears in theServ.Serv.menu of the multifunc-tion display. Information on the message dis-play can be found in the "Restarting the tire

Important safety notes
The tire pressure warning system does notwarn you of an incorrectly set tire pressure.Observe the notes on the recommended tirepressure (Ypage 270).
The tire pressure loss warning does notreplace the need to regularly check the tirepressure. An even loss of pressure on severaltires at the same time cannot be detected bythe tire pressure loss warning system.
The tire pressure monitor is not able to warnyou of a sudden loss of pressure, e.g. if thetire is penetrated by a foreign object. In theevent of a sudden loss of pressure, bring thevehicle to a halt by braking carefully. Avoidabrupt steering movements.
The function of the tire pressure loss warningsystem is limited or delayed if:
Rsnow chains are mounted on your vehicle'stires.
Rroad conditions are wintry.
Ryou are driving on sand or gravel.
Ryou adopt a very sporty driving style (corner-ing at high speeds or driving with high ratesof acceleration).
Ryou drive with a heavy load.
Restarting the tire pressure loss warn-
ing system
Restart the tire pressure loss warning systemif you have:
Rchanged the tire pressure
Rchanged the wheels or tires
Rmounted new wheels or tires
XBefore restarting, make sure that the tirepressures are set properly on all four tiresfor the respective operating conditions.
The recommended tire pressure can befound on the Tire and Loading Informationplacard on the B-pillar. Additionally, a tirepressure table is attached to the fuel fillerflap. The tire pressure loss warning systemcan only give reliable warnings if you haveset the correct tire pressure. If an incorrect
tire pressure is set, these incorrect valueswill be monitored.
XAlso observe the notes in the section on tirepressures (Ypage 270).
XMake sure that the SmartKey is in positionHin the ignition lock (Ypage 118).
XPress theYorebutton on the steer-ing wheel to select theServ.Serv.menu.

Tire pressure monitor
General notes
If a tire pressure monitor is installed, the vehi-cle's wheels have sensors that monitor the tirepressures in all four tires. The tire pressuremonitor warns you if the pressure drops in oneor more of the tires. The tire pressure monitoronly functions if the corresponding sensorsare installed in all wheels.
Information on tire pressures is displayed inthe multifunction display. After a few minutesof driving, the current tire pressure of each tire
