The side airbag and curtain airbag ARE NOT
DESIGNED TO DEPLOY when …The side airbag and curtain airbag are not designed to deploy in
situations where they cannot provide protection to the occu-
pants. Some typical situations are shown in the illustrations.
Because the side airbags and curtain airbags do not protect the
occupants in all types of collisions, be sure to always wear your
seat belts properly.

!
Any maintenance performed on or near the compo-
nents of the SRS should be performed only by a cer-
tified i-MiEV dealer. Do not permit anyone else to
do any service, inspection, maintenance or repair on
any SRS components or wiring. Similarly, no part of
the SRS should ever be handled, removed or dis-
posed by anyone except a certified i-MiEV dealer.
Improper work methods on the SRS components or
wiring could result in an accidental airbag deploy-
ment or could make the SRS inoperable. Either of
these situations could result in serious injury or
death.
Do not modify your steering wheel or any other SRS
component or related vehicle part. For example,
replacement of the steering wheel, or modifications
to the front bumper or body structure can adversely
affect SRS performance and may lead to injury.
If your vehicle has received any damage, you should
have the SRS inspected by a certified i-MiEV dealer
to make sure it is in proper working order.
Do not modify your front seats, center pillar or cen-
ter console. Such modifications can adversely affect
SRS performance and may lead to injury.
Also, if you discover any tear or open seam in the
seat fabric near the side airbag, have the seat
inspected by a certified i-MiEV dealer.

NOTE
When you transfer ownership of the vehicle to another
person, we urge you to alert the new owner that it is
equipped with the SRS and refer that owner to the applica-
ble sections in this owner’s manual.

If you decide to junk or scrap your vehicle, we urge you to
first take it to a certified i-MiEV dealer so that the SRS
can be made safe for disposal.

If any of the following parts needs to be modified for use
by a handicapped person, the advanced airbag system will
be greatly affected. Please consult a certified i-MiEV
dealer for assistance.
• Driver’s seat
• Front passenger seat
• Front seat belt
• Steering wheel
• Instrument panel
If you find a crack in or damage to the front pillar,
rear pillar, or roof side rail where the curtain airbag
is located, have the SRS inspected by a certified i-
MiEV dealer.

LOCKThe steering wheel is locked. The key can be inserted and
removed only when the switch is in this position. ACCThe ready indicator is not illuminated, but the audio system
and other electric devices can be operated.ON The electric motor unit is running, and all the vehicle’s electri-
cal devices can be operated.
START The electric motor unit operates. After the electric motor unit
has started, release the key and it will automatically return to
the “ON” position.NOTE
Your vehicle is equipped with an electronic immobilizer.
To start the electric motor unit, the ID code which the
transponder inside the key sends must match the one
registered to the immobilizer computer.
(Refer to “Electronic immobilizer” on page 3-3.)ACC power auto-cutout function

After about 30 minutes has elapsed with the electric motor
switch in the “ACC” position, the function automatically cuts
out the power for the audio system and other electric devices
that can be operated with that position.
When the electric motor switch is turned from the “ACC” posi-
tion, the power is supplied again to those devices.NOTE
It is possible to modify functions as follows:
• The ACC power auto-cutout function can be deactivated
by a certified i-MiEV dealer.To remove the key

When removing the key, first set the selector lever to the “P”
(PARK) position, and then turn the key to the “LOCK” position
and remove it.

Key reminder buzzer

If the driver’s door is opened while the electric motor switch is
in the “LOCK” or “ACC” position, a tone will sound.
CAUTION
!
Do not remove the key from the electric motor
switch while driving. The steering wheel will lock,
causing loss of control.
If the ready indicator is turned off while driving, the
power brake booster will stop functioning and brak-
ing efficiency will be reduced. Also, the power steer-
ing system will not function and it will require
greater effort to manually steer the vehicle.
Do not leave the key in the “ON” position for a long
time when the electric motor unit is not running.
This will cause the 12V starter battery to run down.

NOTE
If the front wheels are turned, the anti-theft lock may
sometimes make it difficult to turn the key from “LOCK”
position to “ACC” position. Firmly turn the steering
wheel to the left or to the right as you turn the key.
CAUTION
!
Remove the key when leaving the vehicle.
If your vehicle needs to be towed, turn the key to the
“ACC” position to unlock the steering wheel.

3 Service brake

Brake pedalOveruse of the brake can cause poor brake response and pre-
mature wear of the brake pads.
Power brakes

Your vehicle is equipped with power brakes for more braking
force with reduced brake pedal effort.
Your brakes are designed to operate at full capacity, even if the
power assist is lost.
If the power assist is lost, the effort needed to press the brake
pedal is greater.
If you should lose the power assist for some reason, the brakes
will still work.
If the power brake unit or either of the two brake hydraulic sys-
tems stop working properly, the rest of the brake system will
still work, but the vehicle will not slow down as quickly.
You will know this has happened if you find you need to
depress the brake pedal down further, or harder when slowing
down or stopping, or if the brake warning light comes on.
WA R N I N G
!
Do not leave any objects near the brake pedal or let
a floor mat slide under it; doing so could prevent the
full pedal stroke that would be necessary in an emer-
gency. Make sure that the pedal can be operated
freely at all times. Make sure the floor mat is
securely held in place.
CAUTION
!
It is important not to drive the vehicle with your foot
resting on the brake pedal when braking is not
required. This practice can result in very high brake
temperatures, premature pad wear, and possible
damage to the brakes.
WA R N I N G
!
Never turn off the electric motor switch while driv-
ing. Doing so will result in a loss of power assist for
the brakes and steering, increasing the effort
required to steer and brake the vehicle.

NOTE
Once the brake assist system is operational, it maintains
great braking force even if the brake pedal is lightly
released.
To stop its operation, completely remove your foot from
the brake pedal.

The brake assist system may become operational when the
brake pedal is fully depressed even if it has not been
depressed suddenly.

When the brake assist system is in use while driving, you
may feel as if the depressed brake pedal is soft, the pedal
moves in small motions in conjunction with the operation
noise, or the vehicle body and the steering wheel vibrate.
This occurs when the brake assist system is operating nor-
mally and does not indicate faulty operation. Continue to
depress the brake pedal.

You may hear an operation noise when the brake pedal is
depressed suddenly while stationary. This does not indi-
cate a malfunction and the brake assist system is operating
normally.
Anti-lock braking system

The anti-lock braking system helps prevent the wheels from
locking up when braking. This helps you keep control of your
vehicle and its direction. Driving hints
When using the anti-lock brakes (sudden braking), steer-
ing is slightly different from normal driving conditions.
Use the steering wheel carefully.

Always keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of
you. Even if your vehicle is equipped with the anti-lock
braking system, leave a greater braking distance when:
• Driving on gravel or snow-covered roads.
• Driving on uneven road surfaces.

Operation of anti-lock braking system is not restricted to
situations where brakes are applied suddenly. This system
may also prevent the wheels from locking when you drive
over manholes, steel roadwork plates, road markings, or
any uneven road surface.

When the anti-lock braking system is in use, you may feel
the brake pedal vibrating and hear a unique sound. You
may also feel as if the pedal resists being pressed.
In this situation, simply hold the brake pedal down
firmly. Do not pump the brake, which will result in
reduced braking performance.

3Electric power steering system (EPS)

The electric power steering system (EPS) operates while the
electric motor unit is running.
The EPS uses an electric motor to assist the turning of the
steering wheel.
The EPS has mechanical steering capability in case the power
assist is lost. If the power assist is lost for some reason, you
will still be able to steer your vehicle. If the power assist is lost,
you will notice it takes much more effort to steer and that there
is much more “free play” in the steering wheel. If this happens,
take your vehicle to a certified i-MiEV dealer.NOTE
During repeated full-lock turning of the steering wheel
(for example, while you are maneuvering the vehicle into
a parking space), a protection function may be activated to
prevent overheating of the power steering system. This
function will make the steering wheel gradually harder to
turn. In this event, limit your turning of the steering wheel
for a while. When the system has cooled down, the steer-
ing effort will return to normal.
Rear
WA R N I N G
!
Do not turn the key from the ON position while the
vehicle is moving. Stopping the electric motor unit
would make the steering wheel extremely hard to
turn, possibly resulting in an accident.

If you turn the steering wheel while the vehicle is station-
ary with the headlights on, the headlights may become
dim. This behavior is not abnormal. The headlights will
return to their original brightness after a short while.Electric power steering system warning light

If there is a malfunction in the system, the warning light will
come on.
Under normal conditions, the warning light comes on when the
electric motor switch is turned to the “ON” position and goes
off a few seconds later.
If the warning light appears while driving

1. Stop the vehicle in a safe place, put the selector lever to
the “P” (PARK) position and turn off the electric motor
unit.
2. Restart the electric motor unit to check whether the warn-
ing light goes out; if it then remains off, there is no prob-
lem.
If the warning light does not go out, or it appears again
while driving, we recommend you to have your vehicle
inspected.
CAUTION
!
If the warning light appears during driving, it may
become harder to turn the steering wheel.
