Some typical situations are shown in the illustrations. Because the front airbags do not protect the occupants in all types of collisions, be sure to always wear your seat belts properly.
The front airbags may deploy if the underside of the vehicle suffers a moderate to severe impact (undercarriage im
pact). Some typical
situations are shown in the illustrations. Because the front airb
ags may deploy in cer-
tain types of unexpected
impacts, as shown in
the illustrations, and these unexpected impacts can move you out
of position, it is
important to always wear your seat belts properly. When worn properly, seat belts canhelp maintain your distance from the airbags when they begin to inflate. The beginning stage of airbag inflation is the most forcefuland can cause serious injury or death if you are close to the deploying airbag.

The side airbags (A) are contained in the driver and front passenger seatbacks. The side airbag is de
signed to inflate only on
the side of the vehicle that is impacted, even with no passenger in the front seat. A label is attached to the seatbacks in vehi- cles with side airbags.
WA R N I N G Do not attach anything to the steering wheel’s padded cover, such as trim mate-rial, badges, etc. These could strike andinjure an occupant if the airbag inflates. Do not set anything on, or attach anything to, the instrument
panel above the glove
compartment. Such items could strike and injure an occupant if the airbag inflates. WA R N I N G Do not attach accessories to, or put them in front of, the windshield. They could restrict the airbag inflation, or strike andinjure an occupant
, when the airbag
inflates. Do not attempt to remove, install, disas- semble or repair the SRS airbags.
Do not place objects,
such as packages or
pets, between the airbags and the driveror the front passenger. Such objects canadversely affect ai
rbag performance, or
cause serious injury or death when the airbag deploys. Immediately after airbag inflation, some parts of the airbag syst
em will be hot. Do
not touch them. You could be burned. The airbag system is designed to work only once. After the
airbags deploy, they
will not work again. They must promptly be replaced and the
entire airbag system
must be inspected by a certified i-MiEV dealer.WA R N I N G

The curtain airbags are contained in the front pillars and roof side ra
il. The curtain airbag is
designed to inflate only on the side of thevehicle that is impacted
, even with no passen-
ger in the front seat.Curtain airbag system
WA R N I N G The side airbag and curtain airbag can cause serious injury
or death to anyone
too close to the airbag when it deploys. To reduce the risk of in
jury from a deploying
side airbag and curtai
n airbags, all occu-
pants must be properly restrained and seated well back, upright, and in the mid- dle of the seat. Do
not lean against the
door.
WA R N I N G In order to reduce the risk of injury from a deploying side airb
ag, do not allow any
rear seat passengers to hold onto the back of either front seat. Special care should betaken with children. Do not place any objects near or around the front of either front seatback. Such objects can interfere with proper side air- bag deployment and cause injury duringdeployment of the side airbag. Do not place stickers,
labels or additional
trim on the back of either front seat. They can interfere with proper side airbag deployment. Do not install seat c
overs or re-cover seats
that have side airbag
s. Covers can inter-
fere with proper si
de airbag deployment
and adversely affect
side airbag perfor-
mance.
Do not attach a microphone (A) or any other object around the part where thecurtain airbag (B) depl
oys, such as on the
windshield, side door glass or front and rear pillars and roof
side rail. When the
curtain airbag inflate,
the microphone or
other object may be
hurled with great
force or the curtain airbag may not inflate correctly, resulting in death or seriousinjury. WA R N I N G Never install a rear-facing child restraint system in the front passenger seat. Rear- facing child restraint systems MUST ONLY be used in the rear seat.WA R N I N G

A side airbag and curtain airbag are designed to deploy when the vehicle suffers a moderate to severe side impact to the middle of the pas- senger compartment. The typical situation is shown in the illustra- tion. The seat belts in your
vehicle are your pri-
mary means of protecti
on in an accident. The
SRS side airbags and curtain airbags are designed to provide
additional protection.
Therefore, for your safety and the safety of all
occupants, be sure to
always wear your seat
belts properly. In certain types of side
collisions, the side air-
bag and curtain airbag may not deploy, even if the deformation of the body seems to belarge, because the vehicle’s body structure is designed to absorb the impact and to deform in order to help prot
ect the occupants. Some
typical situations where the side airbag and curtain airbag may not deploy are shown inthe illustrations. Because the side airbags and curtain airbags do not protect the occupant in all types of side collisions, be sure to
always wear your seat
belts properly.
Front-facing child restraint systems should also be used ON
LY in the rear seat.
If a front-facing child restraint systemmust be used in the front passenger seat, move the seat as far back as possible, and make sure that the child stays in the childrestraint system, properly restrained and away from the door. Do not allow a child to lean against or sit close to the passenger door, even if the child is seated in a child restraint system. The child’s head sh
ould also not lean
against or be close to the section of the seatback where the side airbag and cur-tain airbag are located. It is dangerous if the side airbag and curtain airbag deploys. Failure to follow all of theseinstructions could lead to serious injury or death to the child. Work done on or in th
e vicinity of the side
airbag and curtain airbag system compo- nents should be done only by a certified i-MiEV dealer. Improper
work methods can
cause accidental side airbag and curtain airbag deployment, or
render a side air-
bag and curtain airb
ag inoperable. Either
of these situations can result in serious injury or death.WA R N I N G

SRS servicing
WA R N I N G Any maintenance performed on or near the components of the SRS should be per-formed only by a certified i-MiEV dealer. Do not permit anyone else to do any ser- vice, inspection, main
tenance or repair on
any SRS components or
wiring. Similarly,
no part of the SRS should ever be handled, removed or disposed
by anyone except a
certified i-MiEV dealer. Improper work methods on the SRS com- ponents or wiring could result in an acci-dental airbag deploym
ent or could make
the SRS inoperable. Ei
ther of these situa-
tions could result in serious injury ordeath. Do not modify your steering wheel or any other SRS component
or related vehicle
part. For example, replacement of the steering wheel, or modifications to thefront bumper or body structure can adversely affect SR
S performance and
may lead to injury. If your vehicle has re
ceived any damage,
you should have the
SRS inspected by a
certified i-MiEV dealer to make sure it is in proper working order.
Do not modify your front seats, center pil- lar or center console. Such modificationscan adversely affect
SRS performance and
may lead to injury. Also, if you discove
r any tear or open
seam in the seat fabr
ic near the side air-
bag, have the seat in
spected by a certified
i-MiEV dealer. If you find a crack in
or damage to the
front pillar, rear pillar, or roof side rail where the curtain airbag is located, havethe SRS inspected by a certified i-MiEV dealer.NOTE
When you transfer ownership of the vehicle to another person, we
urge you to alert the
new owner that it is
equipped with the SRS
and refer that owner to
the applicable sec-
tions in this owner’s manual. If you decide to junk or scrap your vehicle, we urge you to first take it to a certified i- MiEV dealer so that the SRS can be madesafe for disposal. If any of the following parts needs to be modified for use by
a handicapped person,
the advanced airbag sy
stem will be greatly
affected. Please consult a certified i-MiEV dealer for assistance. •Driver’s seat • Front passenger seat • Front seat beltWA R N I N G

Advanced automobile manufacturing tech- niques permit you to operate your new vehi- cle without requiring
a long break-in period
of low-speed driving. However, you can add to the future perfor- mance and economy of your vehicle byobserving the followi
ng precautions during
the first 300 miles (500 km). Drive your vehicle at moderate speeds during the break-in period. Do not overload the ve
hicle. Observe the
seating capacity (See “Cargo load precau-tions” on page 6-10). Do not use this vehi
cle for trailer towing.

The electronic immobilize
r is designed to sig-
nificantly reduce the
possibility of vehicle
theft. The purpose of the system is to immo-bilize the vehicle if
an invalid start is
attempted. A valid st
art attempt can only be
achieved (subject to ce
rtain conditions), using
a key “registered” to the immobilizer system. All of the keys provided with your new vehi- cle have been program
med to the vehicle’s
electronics.
Break-in recommendations Keys
NOTE
The key number (A) is stamped on the key number plate as shown
in the illustration.
Make a record of th
e key number and store
the key and key number plate in separate places, so that you can order a key from acertified i-MiEV dealer if the original keys are lost. The key is a precision
electronic device with
a built-in signal transm
itter. Please observe
the following in order to prevent damage. • Do not leave where it may be exposed to heat caused by direct sunlight, such as ontop of the dashboard. • Do not take the remote
control transmitter
apart. • Do not excessively bend the key or subject it to strong impacts. • Keep the remote control transmitter dry.• Keep away from magne
tic objects such as
key holders.
• Keep away from devi
ces that produce mag-
netism, such as audio systems, computersand televisions. • Do not clean with
ultrasonic cleaners.
• Do not leave the key where it may be exposed to high temperature or high humid- ity.
As your vehicle is equipped with an elec- tronic immobilizer, the electric motor unit isdesigned so that it wi
ll not start if the ID
code registered in the immobilizer computer and the key’s ID code
do not match. Refer to
the section entitled “E
lectronic immobilizer”
for details and key usage.
