Fuel selectionE00200104813Recommended fuel
Cetane number (EN
590) 51 or higherCAUTIONlYour vehicle is designed to use only diesel
fuel that meets the EN590 standard.
Use of any other type of diesel fuel would
adversely affect the engine’s performance and durability.
l If proper “winter” fuel is not used in winter,
the diesel preheat indication lamp may blink
and the engine speed may not rise above the idling speed because of fuel freezing. In thiscase, keep the engine idling for approxi-
mately 10 minutes, then turn off the ignition switch or put the operation mode in OFF and
immediately turn it on or put in ON again to confirm that the diesel preheat indication
lamp is off. (Refer to “Diesel preheat indica- tion lamp” on page 5-14)NOTEl For diesel fuel, due to the separation of par-
affin, the fluidity of the fuel decreases con- siderably as the temperature falls.
Because of this fact there are two kinds of
fuel: “summer” and “winter”.
This must be considered in winter use.
Select either of the two kinds of fuel in ac- cordance with ambient temperature. Above -5 °C: “Summer” diesel
Below -5 °C: “Winter” diesel
When travelling abroad, find out in advance
about the fuels served in local service sta- tions.
l Poor-quality diesel fuel can cause deposits to
form in the injector, resulting in black smoke and rough idling.
If these problems occur, you are advised to
add a cleaning additive to the diesel fuel when you refuel the vehicle.
The additive will break up and remove the
deposits, thereby returning the engine to a normal condition.
Be sure to use a MITSUBISHI MOTORS
GENUINE DIESEL FUEL SYSTEM
CLEANER. Using an unsuitable additive could make the engine malfunction. For de-
tails, please contact your MITSUBISHI
MOTORS Authorized Service Point.Filling the fuel tank
E00200204322WARNINGlWhen handling fuel, comply with the safe-
ty regulations displayed by garages and filling stations.
l Fuel is highly flammable and explosive.
You could be burned or seriously injured
when handling it. When refueling your
vehicle, always turn the engine off and keep away from flames, sparks and smok-
ing materials. Always handle fuel in well-
ventilated outdoor areas.
l Before removing the fuel cap, be sure to
get rid of your body’s static electricity by touching a metal part of the vehicle or
fuel pump. Any static electricity on your
body could create a spark that ignites fuel vapour.
l Perform the whole refueling process
(opening the fuel tank filler door, remov-
ing the fuel cap, etc.) by yourself. Do not let any other person come near the fuel
tank filler. If you allowed a person to help you and that person was carrying static electricity, fuel vapour could be ignited.
l Do not move away from the fuel tank fill-
er until refueling is finished. If you moved
away and did something else (for exam- ple, sitting on a seat) part-way through
the refueling process, you could pick up a fresh charge of static electricity.
l Be careful not to inhale fuel vapour. Fuel
contains toxic substances.

CAUTIONlSince the fuel system may be under pressure,
remove the fuel cap slowly. This relieves any pressure or vacuum that might have
built up in the fuel tank. If you hear a hissing sound, wait until it stops before removing the fuel cap. Otherwise, fuel may spray out,
injuring you or others.NOTEl While filling with fuel, hang the fuel cap on
the hook (A) located on the inside of the fuel
tank filler door.4. Insert the gun in the tank port as far as it
goes.CAUTIONl Do not tilt the gun.
5.
When the gun stops automatically, do

Remove the keyless operation key from the
key slot after starting the engine or changing the operation mode.NOTEl Do not insert into the key slot anything other
than the keyless operation key. This couldcause damage or a malfunction.
l Remove the object or additional key from
the the keyless operation key before insert-ing the key into the key slot. The vehicle
may not be able to receive the registered ID
code from the registered key. Therefore, the engine may not start and the operation mode
may not change.
l The keyless operation key is fixed, if the key
is inserted in the key slot as illustrated.

If the operation mode is in OFF and the driv- er’s door is opened with the keyless operationkey in the key slot, the warning lamp will
blink and the outer buzzer sounds for approx- imately 3 seconds and the inner buzzer
sounds for approximately 1 minute to remind
you to remove the key.
Diesel particulate filter
(DPF) E00619801457
The diesel particulate filter (DPF) is a device that captures most of the particulate matter
(PM) in the exhaust emissions of the diesel engine. The DPF automatically burns away trapped PM during vehicle operation. Under
certain driving conditions, however, the DPF is not able to burn away all of the trapped PM
and, as a result, an excessive amount of PM accumulates inside it.WARNINGl The DPF reaches very high temperatures.
Do not park your vehicle in areas where combustible materials such as dry grass
or leaves can come in contact with a hot exhaust system since a fire could occur.CAUTIONl Do not use any type of fuel or engine oil that
is not specified for your vehicle. Also, do not use any moisture-removing agent or oth-
er fuel additive. Such substances could have a detrimental effect on the DPF.
Refer to “Fuel selection” on page 2-02 and
“Engine oil” on page 10-05.

WARNINGlIn the case where the condition of the
road is different for the right tyre to drive
from the left tyre (such as one tyre on a paved road and the other on ice), direc- tion of the vehicle may change abruptly
when engine braking or accelerating.
Do not use the rear differential lock ex-
cept when making an emergency escape on a snow or frozen road, but drive with
4WD.4-wheel drive operation*
E00606602171
By selecting 4-wheel drive, both axles of the
vehicle are rigidly connected with each other. This improves the traction characteristics. When turning sharp corners or moving for-
ward and backward repeatedly, however, the drive line is stressed, which is felt as a brak-
ing effect. A 4-wheel drive vehicle can accel-
erate more quickly and smoothly.
However, note that the braking distance is not shorter than that of a rear-wheel drive ve-hicle.
When using 4-wheel drive on rough roads
(snow, mud, sand, etc.), it is important to op- erate the vehicle correctly.NOTEl The driving posture should be more upright
and closer to the wheel than usual; adjust the
seat to a good position for easy steering and pedal operation. Be sure to wear the seatbelt.
l After driving on rough roads, check each
part of the vehicle and wash it thoroughlywith water. Refer to the “Vehicle care” sec-
tion and “Inspection and maintenance fol-
lowing rough road operation” on page 6-52.Driving on dry paved road and
highway
Select “2H” position (Easy select 4WD),
“2H” or “4H” position (Super select 4WD II) to drive on the dry paved road. Especially on
dry highway, never select the “4H” or “4L”
position (Easy select 4WD), “4HLc” or “4LLc” position (Super select 4WD II).
CAUTIONl Selecting “4H” or “4L” position (Easy select
4WD), “4HLc” or “4LLc” position (Super
select 4WD II) to drive on dry paved road will increase the fuel consumption with pos-sible noise generation and early tyre wear.It may also increase the differential oil tem-
perature, resulting in possible damage to the driving system.
Further, the drive train will be subjected to
excessive loading, possibly leading to oil leakage, component seizure, or other serious faults.
Driving on snowy or icy roads
Set the drive mode-selector to “4H” position
(Easy select 4WD), “4H” or “4HLc” position in accordance with the road conditions (Su-
per select 4WD II) and then gradually de-
press the accelerator pedal for a smooth start. Keep the pressure on the accelerator pedal asconstant as possible, and drive at low speed.

ERA-GLONASS*E00804800050
ERA-GLONASS is a system designed to re- duce the severity of accidents. The location
and vehicle information is transmitted from
the system to the emergency call centre in
case of an accident or sudden illness, and the emergency call centre arranges for despatch
of emergency vehicles as required.WARNINGl In the country or area where there is no
available emergency call centre of theERA-GLONASS, or where the radio waveof the emergency call cannot be transmit-
ted or received normally, the system does
not operate. In this case, directly arrange
an emergency vehicle or road service with a cellular phone, etc.
l If an emergency occurs and you notice a
fuel smell or bad smell, do not stay inside the vehicle and escape to a safe place im-
mediately.
l While waiting for the rescue after the
emergency call, take action to prevent sec- ondary accidents such as a rear end colli-
sion with the following vehicle, and escape to a safe place.
l In the following cases, directly arrange an
emergency vehicle or road service with a
cellular phone, etc.
• When the system does not operate by
failing because of collision, etc.WARNING• When the vehicle is in a place where ra-
dio waves cannot be transmitted and
received. (for example, indoor, a base- ment parking area, mountainous area,
inside a tunnel, etc.)
• When the line to the emergency call
centre is occupied and the call cannot
be connected to the emergency call cen- tre.NOTEl This system reports to the emergency call
centre, but does not directly arrange anemergency vehicle or pass to the road serv-
ice.
l This system helps to maken an emergency
call for a traffic accident or sudden illness,
but does not have a function to protect the occupants.Flow of the emergency call

4.Check the coolant level in the reserve
tank (B).
5. Add coolant to the radiator and/or re-
serve tank if necessary (refer to the
“Maintenance” section).
WARNINGl Make sure that the engine has cooled
down before removing the radiator cap (C), because hot steam or boiling water
otherwise will gush from the filler port and may scald you.CAUTIONl Do not add coolant while the engine is hot.
Suddenly adding cold coolant could damage the engine. Wait for the engine to cool
down, then add coolant a little at a time.6. Examine the radiator hoses for coolant
leakage and the drive belt for looseness
or damage.
If there is anything wrong with the cool-
ing system or drive belt, we recommend
you to have it checked and repaired.Bleeding the fuel system
E00800701423
The fuel system should be bled to remove air
as described below if the fuel supply is ex- hausted during travel.
Pump the hand pump (A) at the top of the fuel filter until the hand pump becomes stiff. Then try again to start the engine.
If the engine does not start, repeat the process
above.
CAUTIONl Do not smoke or have any other open flame
near the vehicle while bleeding the fuel sys-
tem.
l Be sure to carefully clean away any spilt fuel
which could ignite and cause a fire.Removal of water from the
fuel filter E00800801525
If the fuel filter indication lamp in the instru-ment panel illuminates during driving, it indi-
cates that water has accumulated in the fuel filter. If this occurs, remove the water as de-
scribed below. 1. Loosen the drain plug (A) of the fuel fil-
ter.

The exhaust gas scavenging devices usedwith the catalytic converter are extremely ef- ficient for the reduction of noxious gases.
The catalytic converter is installed in the ex- haust system.
It is important to keep the engine properly
tuned to ensure proper catalyst operation and prevent possible catalyst damage.WARNINGl As with any vehicle, do not park or oper-
ate this vehicle in areas where combusti- ble materials such as dry grass or leaves
can come in contact with a hot exhaust
since a fire could occur.NOTEl Use fuel of the type recommended in
