4. Insert the valid F.A.S.T.-key into the emergency key. 5. Turn the emergency key with F.A.S.T.- key to the “ON” position. (Perform the following procedure within 30 seconds)6. UNLOCK buttons within 10 seconds of pressing the LOCK button in step 9, and the immobilizer display will blink on theinformation screen in the multi-informa- tion display. (Perform the following pro- cedure within 60 seconds)
11. Press the LOCK button twice with the
blank F.A.S.T.-key and the immobilizer display will come on for 30 seconds onthe information screen in the multi-infor-mation display.
12. This completes the registration of the
F. A . S . T. - k e y.

Your F.A.S.T.-key operates on a radio fre-quency subject to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Rules (For vehicles sold in U.S.A.) and Industry Canada Rules (Forvehicles sold in Canada). This device com- plies with Part 15 of FCC Rules and Industry Canada licence-exempt RSS standard(s).Operation is subject to the following two con- ditions.
NOTE
 The indicator light (5) comes on each time a button is pressed.  The keyless entry system does not work if the key is in the ignition switch.  The F.A.S.T.-key can be used from about 40 feet (12 m) away. However, this distance may change if your vehicle is near a TVtransmitting tower, a power station, or a radio station.  If the UNLOCK button (2) is pressed when all doors are locked and no doors are openedwithin about 30 seconds, the doors will auto- matically re-lock.  If the following conditions are observed after pressing the buttons on the remote control transmitter, the battery in the remote controltransmitter may need to be replaced.
• The doors cannot be locked or unlocked. • The trunk lid cannot be opened.• The panic alarm cannot be operated.• The indicator light (5) is dim or does not come on.
 If you lose your F.A.S.T.-key, please contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for areplacement.  If you wish to obtain an
additional F.A.S.T.-
key, please contact an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. A maximum of four F.A.S.T.- key can be programmed for your vehicle.  To use the new remote control transmitters, it is necessary to register the key with both theelectronic immobilizer and keyless entry sys- tem. Also refer to “Electr

Child safety locks help prevent rear passen- gers, especially children, from opening the rear door using the inside door handle. A lock lever for the child safety lock is pro- vided on each rear door. When the lever is in the lock position (1), therear door cannot be opened using the inside door handle. To open the rear door when the child safetylock lever is in the lock position, pull the out- side door handle. When the lever is in the release position (2),the child safety lock is released and the rear
door can be opened using the inside door han- dle.

WA R N I N G Always keep the doors tightly closed and locked when driving. An unlocked door may be accidentally opened by a passen-ger, especially by a child who could fall out. Also, if the doors are not locked, there is a greater risk of someone being thrownfrom the vehicle in an accident.
Trunk lid
WA R N I N G It is dangerous to drive with the trunk lid open since carbon monoxide (CO) gas canenter the cabin. CO is an invisible, odor- less gas that can cause unconsciousness and even death. Do not allow children to have access to the trunk, either by climbing into the trunkfrom outside or through the inside of the vehicle. Always close the trunk lid when your vehicle is unattended. If trapped in the trunk, it is possible to escape from the trunk by using the inside emergency trunkrelease lever. (See “Inside emergency trunk lid release” on page 5-42.)
CAUTION Do not stand behind the exhaust pipe when loading and unloading luggage. Heat from the exhaust could lead to burns.

Press the trunk button (Vehicles with keyless entry system or F.A.S.T.-key) or OPENswitch (Vehicles with F.A.S.T.-key). (See “Keyless entry system” on page 5-7, 5-30 or “Free-hand Advanced Security Transmitter(F.A.S.T.-key)” on page 5-12.) The trunk lid will pop up
to slightly. Lift it to
open the trunk. Pull the trunk lid release lever, located to the left of the driver’s seat, up to open the trunk.
Pull the trunk lid downward as illustrated. Gently slam the trunk lid from the outside so
that it is completely closed. Always ensure the trunk lid is securely closed.

CAUTION Do not use the trunk lid release lever while the vehicle is moving. If the trunk lid is opened, objects in the trunk could fall onto the road and cause an accident.NOTE
 The trunk area light comes on when the trunk lid is opened, and goes out when it is closed.  The trunk area light remains illuminated for a certain period and then goes off automati- cally. Refer to “Interior light auto-cutoutfunction (dome light and other lights)” on page 5-189.
To close
CAUTION Be careful to prevent catching anyone’s fin- gers when closing the trunk lid. Before starting the vehicle, be sure to con- firm that the trunk lid is closed. If the trunklid opens while driving the vehicle, objects stored in the trunk could fall out onto the road.NOTE
 Gas struts (A) are installed in the locations illustrated to support the trunk lid. Please observe the following in order to preventdamage or faulty operation. • Do not touch, push or pull the gas struts when closing the trunk lid. • Do not attach any plastic material, tape, etc., to the gas struts.

The emergency trunk lid release is designed to provide a way to open the trunk lid from inside the trunk. It was developed to help pre-vent death and serious injuries to children who might become locked inside a vehicle trunk. The emergency trunk lid release lever (see illustration) is mounted on the trunk lid. The lever glows in the dark after exposure to sunlight.
You and your family should familiarize your- selves with the location and operation of theemergency trunk lid release lever. Children should be taught not to play in or around vehicles.
To open the trunk from the inside, move the lever (A) in the direction of the arrow on the lever. Push up on the trunk lid to open the trunk and climb out.

The theft-alarm system is designed to provideprotection from unauthorized entry into thevehicle. This system is operated in three stages: the first is the “armed” stage, the sec- ond is the “alarm” stage, and third is the “dis-armed” stage. If triggered, the system
• Do not tie string, etc., around the gas struts. • Do not hang any object on the gas struts.

WA R N I N G Children should never be left unsuper- vised in or around vehicles. Unsupervised children could lock them- selves in an open vehicle or trunk. People trapped inside a vehicle or trunk, even if only for a short period of time, canquickly die from suffocation or heat stroke, especially on hot days. Interior temperatures in vehicles can rise in min-utes. Keep your vehicle doors locked and the trunk lid closed when not in use. Keep your vehicle keys away from children.
CAUTION When loading the trunk, place your things so that they will not touch the emergency trunk lid release lever when you close the trunk. Otherwise you could damage the lever andmake it unusable.

 One of the doors is opened without using the remote control transmitter or the F. A . S . T. - k e y.  The engine hood or the trunk lid is opened.
When the alarm is activated: 1. The headlights blink on and off for 3 min- utes.After 3 minutes the headlights automati- cally shut off. 2. The horn will sound intermittently for 3minutes.

 By using the remote control transmitter or the F.A.S.T.-key to lock or unlock the door.  Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” posi- tion.

The system will be disarmed if the followingoperation is performed.  The ignition switch is turned to the “ON” position.  All doors are unlocked by the remote con- trol transmitter or the F.A.S.T.-key.

NOTE
 The alarm will continue to operate for 3 min- utes. At the end of that period, the alarm will automatically shut off to save battery power. The system will then be rearmed until the proper disarming step is taken.  The alarm will resume if unauthorized actions are taken again, even if the alarm hasstopped.  While the alarm is operating, a warning is displayed on the information screen in the multi-information display.

Use the following procedure to test the sys- tem: 1. Lower the driver’s window. 2. Arm the system as explained in “Armed stage”. 3. Make sure that the theft-alarm indicatorcomes on and flashes for approximately 20 seconds. 4. Wait a few seconds and then unlock thedriver’s side door by using the inside door lock knob and open the door. 5. Check to be sure that the horn soundsintermittently and the headlights blink on and off when a door is opened. 6. Disarm the system by unlocking all doorsby the remote control transmitter or the F. A . S . T. - k e y.

The main switch located on the driver’s doorcan be used to operate all door windows. A window can be opened or closed by operat-ing the corresponding switch.Press the switch down to open the window, and pull up the switch to close it. If the driver’s door window switch is fullypressed down/pulled up, the driver’s door window automatically opens/closes com- pletely.If you want to stop the window movement, operate the switch lightly in the reverse direc- tion.
 The amount of time after unlocking until the vehicle relocks automatically can be adjusted. See an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer for details.  Once the system has been disarmed, it can- not be rearmed except by repeating the arm- ing procedure.
Testing the theft-alarm system

 Never try to operate the main switch and sub switch in different directions at the sametime. This will freeze the window in posi- tion.  Operating the power windows repeatedly with the engine stopped will run down the battery. Use the window switches only whilethe engine is running. WA R N I N G Before operating the power windows, make sure that nothing can be trapped(head, hands, fingers, etc.) in the window.
 Never leave the vehicle with the key in the ignition switch.  Never leave a child alone in the vehicle.

When parking on a hill, apply the parking brake and turn the front wheels toward thecurb on a downhill grade, away from the curb on an uphill grade.
To apply 1- Pull the lever up without pushing the
button at the end of hand grip. When the parking brake is set and theignition switch is in the “ON” position, the brake warning light in the instru- ment cluster will come on. Before driving, be sure to release the parking brake.
To r e l e a s e 1- Pull the lever up slightly. 2- Push and hold the button at the end of
the hand grip.
3- Push the lever downward.
CAUTION Before driving, be sure that the parking brake is fully released and brake warning light is off. If you drive without the parking brake fully released, the warning display will appear onthe information screen in the multi-informa- tion display. If a vehicle is driven without releasing theparking brake, the brakes will be overheated, resulting in ineffective braking and possible brake failure. The day/night knob (A) at the bottom of the mirror can be used to adjust the mirror toreduce the glare from the headlights of vehi-cles behind you during night driving.

Adjust the outside rearview mirrors only after making any seat adjustments so you have aclear view to the rear of the vehicle.
The outside rearview mirrors can be adjusted when the ignition switch is in the “ON” or “ACC” position.Move the lever (A) to the same side as the mirror you wish to adjust. Press the switch (B) to adjust the mirror posi- tion.

Outside rearview mirrors
WA R N I N G Do not attempt to adjust the outside rear- view mirrors while driving. This can be dangerous.Be sure to adjust the mirrors before driv- ing. Your passenger’s side mirror is convex. The objects you see in the mirror will look smaller and farther away than theyappear in a regular flat mirror. Do not use this mirror to estimate the dis- tance of vehicles following you whenchanging lanes.

The outside mirror can be folded in toward the side window to prevent damage whenparking in tight locations.

When the rear window defogger switch is pressed with the engine running, the outside rearview mirrors are defogged or defrosted.Current will flow through the heater element inside the mirrors, thus clearing away frost or condensation.
The indicator light (A) will illuminate while the defogger is on. The heater will be turned off automatically in about 20 minutes.

The engine is off and the steering wheel is locked. The key can be inserted and removedonly when the switch is in this position. Allows operation of electrical accessories with the engine off. The engine runs and all accessories can be used.
