Accordingly, when the low tire pressure tell- tale illuminates, you should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a sig-nificantly under-inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiencyand tire tread life, and may affect the vehi- cle’s handling and stopping ability. Please note that the TPMS is not a substitute forproper tire maintenance, and it is the driver’sresponsibility to maintain correct tire pres- sure, even if under-inflation has not reached the level to trigger illumination of the TPMSlow tire pressure telltale. Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate whenthe system is not operating properly. The TPMS malfunction indicator is combined with the low tire pressure telltale.When the system detects a malfunction, the telltale will flash for approximately one min- ute and then remain continuously illuminated.This sequence will continue upon subsequent vehicle start-ups as long as the malfunction exists.When the malfunction indicator is illumi- nated, the system may not be able to detect or signal low tire pressure as intended.TPMS malfunctions may occur for a variety of reasons, including the installation of replacement or alternate tires or wheels on the
vehicle that prevent the TPMS from function- ing properly. Always check the TPMS mal- function telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure thatthe replacement or alternate tires and wheels allow the TPMS to continue to function prop- erly.

1. If the tire pressure monitoring systemwarning light illuminates, avoid hardbraking, sharp steering maneuvers and high speeds. You should stop and adjust the tires to the proper inflation pressure assoon as possible. Adjust the spare tire at the same time. Refer to “Tires” on page 9-14.
2. If the tire pressure monitoring system warning light remains illuminated afteryou have been driving for about 20 min- utes after you adjust the tire inflation pres- sure, one or more of the tires may have apuncture.  In addition, the warning display is displayed on the information screen in the multi-infor-mation display.  When inspecting or adjusting the tire pres- sure, do not apply excessive force to the valve stem to avoid breakage.
 After inspecting or adjusting the tire pres- sure, always reinstall the valve cap on the valve stem. Without the valve cap, dirt or moisture could get into the valve, resulting in damage to thetire inflation pressure sensor.  Do not use metal valve caps, which may cause a metal reaction, resulting in corrosion and damage of the tire inflation pressure sen- sors.  Once adjustments have been made, the warn- ing light will go off after a few minutes ofdriving.WA R N I N G If the warning light/display illuminates while you are driving, avoid hard braking, sharp steering maneuvers and highspeeds. Driving with an under-inflated tire adversely affects vehicle performance and can result in an accident.NOTE

The tire pressure monitoring system may not work normally in the following circum-stances:  A wireless facility or device using the same frequency is near the vehicle.  Snow or ice is stuck inside the fenders and/or on the wheels.  The tire inflation pressure sensor’s battery is dead.
 Wheels other than Mitsubishi genuine wheels are being used.  Wheels that are not fitted with tire infla- tion pressure sensors are being used. Wheels whose ID co
des are not memo-
rized by the vehicle are used.  Compact spare tire is fitted on a road wheel.  A window tint that affects the radio wave signals is installed.

• If the driver’s door is opened after the key is removed from the ignition switch, a high-pitched constant tone will sound to remind you to turn off the lights.• If the driver’s door is opened with the key in the ignition switch, a low-pitched tone will sound to remind you to removethe key. If your hands get trapped, you could suffer injuries or the wipers could malfunction. To deactivate the rain sensor, place the lever in the “OFF” position.NOTE
 To protect the rubber parts of the wipers, this operation of the wipers does not take placeeven if the lever is put in the “AUTO” posi- tion when the vehicle is stationary and the ambient temperature is about 32 °F (0 °C) orlower.  Do not cover the sensor by affixing a sticker or label to the windshield. Also, do not put any water-repellent coating on the wind- shield. The rain sensor would not be able todetect the extent of rain, and the wipers might stop working normally.  In the following cases, the rain sensor may be malfunctioning. Have the vehicle checked at an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer ora repair facility of your choice. • When the wipers operate at a constant inter- val despite changes in the extent of rain. • When the wipers do not operate even though it is raining.CAUTION
 The wipers may automatically operate when things such as insects or foreign objects are affixed to the windshield on top of the rain sensor or when the windshield is frozen. Objects affixed to the windshield will stopthe wipers when the wipers cannot remove them. To operate the wipers again, move the lever to the “LO” or “HI” position. Also, thewipers may operate automatically due to strong direct sunlight or electromagnetic wave. Replace your tires before they are heavily worn out. As your vehicle is equipped with a tire pres- sure monitoring system, there is a risk ofdamage to the tire inflation pressure sensors when the tire is replaced on the rim. Tire replacement should, therefore, be performedonly by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Have someone watch while you turn all the exterior lights on and off. Also check the turn signal indicators and high-beam indicators on the instrument panel. Check the ground under the vehicle after parking overnight, for fuel, water, oil, orother leaks. Make sure all the fluid levels are correct. Also, if you can smell fuel, you need to find out why immediately and have itfixed.

 Check the battery, including terminals and cables. During extremely cold weather, the battery will not be as strong. Also, thebattery power level may drop because more power is used for cold starting and driving.
Before driving the vehicle, check to see if the engine runs at the proper speed and if the headlights are as bright as normally. Charge or replace the battery if necessary.During extreme cold weather, it is possi- ble that a very low battery could freeze.  Warm the engine sufficiently. After start- ing the engine, allow a short warm-up time to distribute oil to all cylinders. Thendrive your vehicle slowly.  Stay at low speeds at first so that the transaxle, transfer case and rear axle oilhave time to spread to all the lubrication points.  Manual transaxle can be harder to shift in cold weather conditions. This is normal and shifting will get easier as the transaxle warms up. Check the engine antifreeze. If there is not enough coolant because of a leak or from engine overheating, add Mit-subishi Motors Genuine Super Long Life Coolant Premium or equivalent.
