The combination of items shown on the dis- play varies depending on the vehicle model.CAUTION When display/indicator blinks, ASC is operating, which means that the road is slip- pery or that your vehicle’s wheels are begin- ning to slip. If this happens, drive slower.
If the temperature in the braking system con- tinues to increase due to continuous brake control on a slippery road surface, the display/indicator will blink. To prevent the brake system from overheating, the brake control of the traction control function will be temporarily suspended. The engine con-trol of the traction control function and nor- mal brake operation will not be affected. Park your vehicle in a safe place. When thetemperature in the braking system has come down, the display/indicator will be turned off and the traction control function will start operating again.NOTE
The display/indicator may come on when you start the engine. This means that the bat- tery voltage momentarily dropped when the engine was started. It does not indicate a malfunction, provided that the display goesout immediately. When a spare tire has been put on your vehi- cle, the gripping ability of the tire will be lower, making it more likely that the dis- play/indicator will blink.CAUTION

system warning light normally illuminates and goes off a few seconds later. If one or more of the vehicle tires (except for the spare tire) is significantly under-inflated, the warning light will remain illuminatedwhile the ignition switch is in the “ON” posi- tion. Refer to “If the warning light/display illumi-nates while driving” on page 5-86 and take the necessary measures.
Each tire, including the spare (if provided), should be checked monthly when cold andinflated to the inflation pressure recom- mended by the vehicle manufacturer on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label.(If your vehicle has tires of a different size than the size indicated on the vehicle placard or tire inflation pressure label, you shoulddetermine the proper tire inflation pressure for those tires.) As an added safety feature, your vehicle hasbeen equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) that illuminates a low tire pressure telltale when one or more of yourtires is significantly under-inflated.
NOTE
In addition, the warning display is displayed on the information screen in the multi-infor- mation display. Type 1 Type 2
CAUTION If the tire pressure monitoring system warn- ing light does not illuminate when the igni- tion switch is turned to the “ON” position, it means that the tire pressure monitoring sys- tem is not working properly. Have the sys-tem inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. In such situations,
a malfunctioning of the
system may be preventing the monitoring of the tire pressure. Avoid sudden braking, sharp turning and high-speed driving. If a malfunction is detected in the tire pres- sure monitoring system, the tire pressuremonitoring system warning light will blink for approximately 1 minute and then remain continuously illuminated. The warning lightwill issue further warnings each time the engine is restarted as long as the malfunction exists.Check to see whether the warning light goes off after few minutes driving. If it then goes off duri
ng driving, there is no
problem. However, if the warning light does not go off, or if it blinks again when the engine isrestarted, have the vehicle inspected by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. In such situations,
a malfunctioning of the
system may be preventing the monitoring of the tire pressure. For safety reasons, whenthe warning light appears while driving, avoid sudden braking, sharp turning and high-speed driving.

Accordingly, when the low tire pressure tell- tale illuminates, you should stop and check your tires as soon as possible, and inflate them to the proper pressure. Driving on a sig-nificantly under-inflated tire causes the tire to overheat and can lead to tire failure. Under-inflation also reduces fuel efficiencyand tire tread life, and may affect the vehi- cle’s handling and stopping ability. Please note that the TPMS is not a substitute forproper tire maintenance, and it is the driver’sresponsibility to maintain correct tire pres- sure, even if under-inflation has not reached the level to trigger illumination of the TPMSlow tire pressure telltale. Your vehicle has also been equipped with a TPMS malfunction indicator to indicate whenthe system is not operating properly. The TPMS malfunction indicator is combined with the low tire pressure telltale. When the system detects a malfunction, the telltale will flash for approximately one min- ute and then remain continuously illuminated. This sequence will continue upon subsequent vehicle start-ups as long as the malfunction exists. When the malfunction indicator is illumi- nated, the system may not be able to detect or signal low tire pressure as intended.TPMS malfunctions may occur for a variety of reasons, including the installation of replacement or alternate tires or wheels on the
vehicle that prevent the TPMS from function- ing properly. Always check the TPMS mal- function telltale after replacing one or more tires or wheels on your vehicle to ensure thatthe replacement or alternate tires and wheels allow the TPMS to continue to function prop- erly.

1. If the tire pressure monitoring systemwarning light illuminates, avoid hardbraking, sharp steering maneuvers and high speeds. You should stop and adjust the tires to the proper inflation pressure assoon as possible. Adjust the spare tire at the same time. Refer to “Tires” on page 9-14.
2. If the tire pressure monitoring system warning light remains illuminated afteryou have been driving for about 20 min- utes after you adjust the tire inflation pres- sure, one or more of the tires may have apuncture. Inspect the tire and if it has a puncture, have it repaired by an autho- rized Mitsubishi Motors dealer as soon aspossible.
If the warning light/display illu- minates while driving
NOTE
In addition, the warning display is displayed on the information screen in the multi-infor-mation display. When inspecting or adjusting the tire pres- sure, do not apply excessive force to the valve stem to avoid breakage.
After inspecting or adjusting the tire pres- sure, always reinstall the valve cap on the valve stem. Without the valve cap, dirt or moisture could get into the valve, resulting in damage to thetire inflation pressure sensor. Do not use metal valve caps, which may cause a metal reaction, resulting in corrosion and damage of the tire inflation pressure sen- sors. Once adjustments have been made, the warn- ing light will go off after a few minutes ofdriving.WA R N I N G If the warning light/display illuminates while you are driving, avoid hard braking, sharp steering maneuvers and highspeeds. Driving with an under-inflated tire adversely affects vehicle performance and can result in an accident.NOTE

The tire pressure monitoring system may not work normally in the following circum-stances: A wireless facility or device using the same frequency is near the vehicle. Snow or ice is stuck inside the fenders and/or on the wheels. The tire inflation pressure sensor’s battery is dead.
Wheels other than Mitsubishi genuine wheels are being used. Wheels that are not fitted with tire infla- tion pressure sensors are being used. Wheels whose ID co
des are not memo-
rized by the vehicle are used. Compact spare tire is fitted on a road wheel. A window tint that affects the radio wave signals is installed.
N00532900179
If new wheels with new tire inflation pressure sensors are installed, their ID codes must be programmed into the tire pressure monitoringsystem. Have tire and wheel replacement per- formed by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer to avoid the risk of damaging the tireinflation pressure sensors. If the wheel
replacement is not done by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer, it is not covered by your warranty.
N00533001259
Your tire pressure monitoring system oper- ates on a radio frequency subject to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Rules (For vehicles sold in U.S.A.) and IndustryCanada Rules (For vehicles sold in Canada). This device complies
with Part 15 of FCC
Rules and Industry Canada licence-exemptRSS standard(s). Operation is subject to
the following two con-
ditions. This device may not cause harmful inter- ference. This device must accept any interference received, including interference that maycause undesired operation.
CAUTION If a tire has a puncture, replace that tire with the spare tire. Driving on a punctured tire could lead to an accident. The warning light/display may not illuminate immediately in the event of a tire blowout or rapid leak.NOTE
To avoid the risk of damage to the tire infla- tion pressure sensors, have any punctured tire repaired by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. If the tire repair is not done byan authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer, it is not covered by your warranty. Do not use an aerosol puncture-repair prod- uct on any tire. Such a spray could damage the tire inflation pressure sensors. Have anypuncture repaired by an authorized Mitsubi- shi Motors dealer.
NOTE
Tire inflation pressures vary with the ambi- ent temperature. If the vehicle is subjected tolarge variations in ambient temperature, the tire inflation pressures may be under-inflated (causing the warning light/display to comeon) when the ambient temperature is rela- tively low. If the warning light/display comes on, adjust the tire inflation pressure.
Whenever the tires and wheels are replaced with new ones
CAUTION The use of non-genuine wheels will prevent the proper fit of the tire inflation pressure sensors, resulting in air leakage or damage to the sensors.

Fuel economy 6-2 Driving safety
6
N00628800165
Fuel economy is dependent on many factors. Your personal driving habits can have a sig-nificant effect on your fuel use. Several rec- ommendations for achieving the greatest fuel economy are listed below. Whenever accelerating from a stop, always accelerate slowly and smoothly. When parked for even a short period, do not idle the engine. Shut it off. Plan your trips to avoid unnecessary stops. Keep your tires inflated to the recom- mended pressures. When you drive on highways or dry improved roads, set the drive mode-selec- tor “2WD” or “4WD AUTO” position (ifso equipped). For freeway driving, maintain a speed of approximately 50 mph (80 km/h) whentraffic, roadway and weather conditions safely permit. Keep your air filter clean and your vehicle lubricated according to the recommenda- tions in this manual. Always keep your vehicle well main- tained. A poorly maintained engine wastes fuel and costs money. Do not overload your vehicle.
N00628900052
Drunk driving is one of the most frequent causes of accidents.Your driving ability can be seriously impaired even with blood alcohol levels far below the legal minimum. If you have been drinking, don’t drive. Ride with a designated non- drinking driver, call a cab or a friend, or use public transportation. Drinking coffee or tak-ing a cold shower will not make you sober.Similarly, prescription and nonprescription drugs affect your alertness, perception and reaction time. Consult with your doctor orpharmacist before driving while under the influence of any of these medications.
N00628600017
The original equipment floor mat providedwith your vehicle was specifically designed for your vehicle. Always properly positionthe floor mat and assure it does not interfere with operation of the pedals. Always use the
retaining clip on the driver’s floorboard to secure the floor mat. When used, this clip will help prevent the floor mat from moving for- ward and possibly interfering with the opera-tion of the pedals. To prevent the floor mat from moving forward and possibly interfering with the operation of the pedals, Mitsubishigenuine floor mats are recommended.
N00628700050
1. Place the floor mat to fit the shape of thefloorboard.2. Align the floor mat with the installation holes over the retaining clips. 3. Secure the floor mat with retaining clips.

For a safer and more enjoyable trip, always observe the following: Before starting the vehicle, make certain that you and all passengers are seated and wearing their seat belts properly (with children in the rear seat, in appropriaterestraints), and that all the doors are locked.
Move the driver’s seat as far backward as possible, while still keeping good visibil- ity, and good control of the steering wheel, brakes, accelerator, and controls.Check the instrument panel indicators and multi-information display for any possible problem. Move the front passenger seat as far back as possible. Make sure that infants and small children are properly restrained in accordance withall laws and regulations.
Check these by selecting the defroster mode, and set the blower switch on high. You should be able to feel the air blowing against the windshield. (Refer to “Defrosting or defogging the wind- shield and door windows” on page 7-8, 7-13.) Check all the tires for heavy tread wear or uneven wear patterns. Look for stones, nails, glass, or other objects stuck in the tread. Lookfor any tread cuts or sidewall cracks. Check the wheel nuts for tightness, and the tires (including spare tire) for proper pressures.
WA R N I N G If a floor mat is the wrong size or is not properly installed, it can interfere with the operation of the pedals. Interference with the pedals can cause unintended accelera- tion and/or increased stopping distancesresulting in a crash and injury. Always make sure the floor mat does not interfere with the accelerator or brake pedal. Always use the retaining clip on the driver’s floorboard to secure the floormat. Always install the mat with the correct side facing down. Never install a second mat over or under an existing floor mat. Do not use a floor mat designed for another model vehicle ev
en if it is a Mit-
subishi genuine floor mat. Before driving, be sure to check the fol- lowing:• Periodically check that the floor mat isproperly secured with the retaining clips. If you remove the floor mat while clean-ing the inside of your vehicle or for any other reason, always check the condition of the floor mat after it has been rein-stalled.• While the vehicle is stopped with the engine off, check that the floor mat is not interfering with the pedals by depressingthe pedals fully.

Replace your tires before they are heavily worn out. As your vehicle is equipped with a tire pres- sure monitoring system, there is a risk ofdamage to the tire inflation pressure sensors when the tire is replaced on the rim. Tire replacement should, therefore, be performedonly by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer. Have someone watch while you turn all the exterior lights on and off. Also check the turn signal indicators and high-beam indicators on the instrument panel. Check the ground under the vehicle after parking overnight, for fuel, water, oil, orother leaks. Make sure all the fluid levels are correct. Also, if you can smell fuel, you need to find out why immediately and have itfixed.
N00629200111
Even this vehicle’s safety equipment, andyour safest driving, cannot guarantee that you
can avoid an accident or injury. However, if you give extra attention to the following areas, you can better protect yourself and your passengers: Drive defensively. Be aware of traffic, road and weather conditions. Leave plenty of stopping distance between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead. Before changing lanes, check your mir- rors and use your turn signal light. While driving, watch the behavior of other drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians. Always obey applicable laws and regula- tions. Be a polite and alert driver. Always leave room for unexpected events, such assudden braking. If you plan to drive in another country, obey their vehicle registration laws andmake sure you will be able to get the right fuel.
N00629401497
Check the battery, including terminals and cables. During extremely cold weather, the battery will not be as strong. Also, thebattery power level may drop because more power is used for cold starting and driving.
Before driving the vehicle, check to see if the engine runs at the proper speed and if the headlights are as bright as normally. Charge or replace the battery if necessary.During extreme cold weather, it is possi- ble that a very low battery could freeze. Warm the engine sufficiently. After start- ing the engine, allow a short warm-up time to distribute oil to all cylinders. Thendrive your vehicle slowly. Stay at low speeds at first so that the transaxle, transfer case and rear axle oilhave time to spread to all the lubrication points. Manual transaxle can be harder to shift in cold weather conditions. This is normal and shifting will get easier as the transaxle warms up. Check the engine antifreeze. If there is not enough coolant because of a leak or from engine overheating, add Mit-subishi Motors Genuine Super Long Life Coolant Premium or equivalent.
Lights Fluid leaks Safe driving techniques
Driving during cold weather
WA R N I N G The battery gives off explosive hydrogen gas. Any spark or flame can cause the bat- tery to explode, which could cause seriousinjury or death. Always wear protective clothes and a face mask when working with your battery, orlet a skilled mechanic do it.
