The air conditioning should be operated for at least five minutes each week, even in coldweather. This includes the quick defrosting mode. Operating the air condition system weekly maintains lubrication of the compres-sor internal parts to keep the air conditioning in the best operating condition.

The air conditioning system is equipped withan air filter to remove pollen and dust.
The air filter’s ability to collect pollen and dirt is reduced as it becomes dirty, so replace it periodically. For the maintenance interval, refer to the “WARRANTY AND MAINTE-NANCE MANUAL”.

The audio system can only be used when the ignition switch is in the “ON” or “ACC” position.
CAUTION The air conditioning system in your vehicle must be charged with the refrigerant HFC- 134a and the lubricant SUN-PAG56. Use of any other refrigerant or lubricant will cause severe damage and may require replac-ing your vehicle’s entire air conditioning system. The release of refrigerant into the atmo-sphere is not recommended. The new refrigerant HFC-134a in your vehi- cle is designed not to harm the earth’s ozonelayer. However, it may contribute slightly to global warming. It is recommended that the old refrigerant besaved and recycled for future use.

NOTE
 Operation in certain conditions such as driv- ing on a dusty road and frequent use of the air conditioning can lead to reduction of ser-vice life of the filter.
When you feel that the
air flow is lower than normal or when the windshield or windows start to fog up easily,replace the air filter. Contact your Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice for assistance.

NOTE
 To listen to the audio system while the engine is not running, turn the ignition switch to the “ACC” position. If the ignition switch is left in the “ACC” position, the accessory power will automati-cally turn off after a certain period of time and you will no longer be able to use the audio system. The accessory power comeson again if the ignition switch is turned from the “ACC” position. Refer to “ACC power auto-cutout function” on page 5-53.  If a cellular phone is used inside the vehicle, it may create noise in the audio equipment.This does not mean that anything is wrong with your audio equipment. In such a case, use the cellular phone at a place as far awayas possible from the audio equipment.  If foreign objects or water get into the audio equipment, or if smoke or a strange odor comes from it, immediately turn off the audio system and have it checked at anauthorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice. Never try to repair it yourself. Avoid using the audio sys-tem until it is inspected by a qualified per- son.  If the audio system is damaged by foreign objects, water, or fire, have the system checked by a qualified Mitsubishi Motors technician.

To reduce the possibility of catalytic con- verter damage:  Use UNLEADED GASOLINE ONLY of the type of recommended in “Fuel selec- tion”.  Do not drive with an extremely low fuel level. Running out of gas could damage the catalytic converter.  Do not try to start the engine by pushing or towing the vehicle. If the battery is weak or run down, use jumper cables to properly start the engine.
 Do not idle the engine with any spark plug wires disconnected or removed, such as when performing diagnostic tests.  Do not idle the engine for a long time if it is idling roughly or otherwise obviously malfunctioning.  To prevent the catalytic converter from being damaged from unburned gas, do not race the engine when turning off the igni- tion switch.  Stop driving the vehicle if you think the performance is less than normal, the engine is running oddly or there is any other engine trouble, such as with theignition, etc. If you
are not able to stop
driving immediately, slow down and drive for only a short time. Have an inspectionmade by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice as soon as possible.  In unusual situations involving major engine problems, a burning odor may indicate severe and abnormal catalyticconverter overheating. If this occurs, stop in a safe place, shut the engine off and let the vehicle cool. Once the engine is cool,immediately take your vehicle to a dealer or a repair facility of your choice for ser- vice.

Use the engine hood release lever (locatedunder the instrument panel near the driver’sdoor) to unlock the engine hood. Pull the lever toward you to release the engine hood latch.
CAUTION Damage to the catalytic converter can result if your vehicle is not kept in proper operating condition. If the engine malfunctions or mis- fires, or if your vehicle performance suffers, have it serviced promptly. Running yourvehicle when it is overheated may result in damage to the converter and vehicle.WA R N I N G Do not park or run your vehicle in areas where combustible materials such as dry grass or leaves can come in contact with a hot exhaust, since a fire could occur. Do not put undercoat paint on the cata- lytic converter.

Many states have laws requiring that you replace your tires at this point. These indicators are molded into the bottom of the tread grooves and will appear when thetire tread is worn down to 1/16 inch (1.6 mm). When the bands appear next to one another intwo or more places, replace your tires.

Your vehicle is equipped with an emission- control system that meets all the requirementsof the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Environment Canada. The emission-con- trol system is made of:  a positive crankcase ventilation system  an evaporative emission-control system  an exhaust emission-control system
The maintenance services listed in the “WARRANTY AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL” must be performed at the timesor mileages listed to keep the emission-con- trol system working properly. These, and all the other “general” maintenance serviceslisted in this manual, need to be performed to keep your vehicle running properly and reli- ably. You may need more frequent maintenance if you drive your vehicle in harsh conditions such as dusty areas or do a lot of start-and- stop driving. To be sure the emission-control system works properly, have your vehicle inspected and maintained by an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your
choice following the schedule in the “WAR- RANTY AND MAINTENANCE MAN- UAL”. You should also have an inspection and ser-vice any time you suspect a malfunction.

 To meet government regulations and pro- mote cleaner air, your vehicle is equipped with an onboard diagnostic system (OBD).The engine electronic control module that controls OBD functions stores various data (especially about the exhaust emissions).This data will be erased if the battery cable is disconnected, which could make a rapid diagnosis difficult. Do not disconnect thebattery cable when the engine malfunction indicator (“SERVICE ENGINE SOON” or “Check engine light”) is on.

The best way to keep carbon monoxide gas from entering inside your vehicle is to have the engine exhaust system properly serviced. Have a competent mechanic inspect the com-plete exhaust system and nearby body areas for broken, damaged, deteriorated, or mispo- sitioned parts if you notice any of the follow-ing:  A change in the sound of the exhaust sys- tem  The smell of exhaust fumes inside the vehicle The underside or rear of the vehicle is damaged
Also check the exhaust system each time the vehicle is raised for lubrication, oil changes,or required service. Any open seams or loose connections could let dangerous exhaust fumes seep into the luggage compartment andpassenger compartments.  Check for holes or exhaust gas leaks caused by corrosion or damage.  Check the joints and connections for looseness or exhaust gas leaks.  Check the rubber hangers and brackets for damage.

The hood lock release mechanism and hoodsafety catch should be checked, cleaned, and oiled when needed for easy movement and to stop rust and wear. Use Multipurpose GreaseNLGI Grade 2 sparingly for all sliding parts of the hood latch and release lever. Work the grease into the hood lock mechanism until allthe movable surfaces are covered.Also, put a light coat of the same grease on the safety catch wherever moving parts touch.

The ventilation slots in front of the wind-shield should be brushed clear after a heavy snowfall so that the operation of the heatingand ventilation systems will not be impaired. To prevent freezing of the weatherstripping on the doors, engine hood, etc., they should be treated with silicone grease.
It is a good idea to carry a shovel or a short- handled spade in the vehicle during the win- ter so that you can clear away snow if you getstranded. A small hand-brush for sweeping snow off the vehicle and a plastic scraper for the windshield, side and rear window are alsouseful.

Keep a record of the chassis number and vehicle identification number. Such informa-tion will assist the police if your vehicle is stolen. The vehicle emission control information label is affixed on the inside panel of theengine hood.
The vehicle identification number is stamped on the plate riveted to the left front corner of the vehicle body. It is visible from outside of the vehicle through the windshield. The air conditioning label is affixed on the inside panel of the engine compartment. The vehicle information code plate is located on the front passenger door sill.
The chassis number is stamped on the floor under the front passenger
seat. It is visible by
pulling back the carpet flap as shown in the illustration. The engine model and serial number are stamped on the engine cylinder block as shown in the illustration.
