You can change the following functions tomatch your preference. Enable automatic air conditioning control: When the mode selection dial or blower speed selection dial has been set to the“AUTO” position or when the tempera- ture control dial has been set to the mini- mum temperature, the air conditioningswitch is automatically controlled. Disable automatic air conditioning con- trol: The air conditioning switch is not auto-matically controlled, unless the air condi- tioning switch is used. Changing the settings:
Press the air conditioning switch for about 10 seconds or longer. When the setting has changed, the system will beep and the indicator light will flash.• When the setting has changed from enabled to disabled, the system will beep three times and theindicator will flash three times. • When the setting has changed from dis- abled to enabled, the system will beep two times and theindicator light will flash three times.
CAUTION Using the air conditioning slightly increases the engine idle speed. Therefore, make sureyour foot is firmly on the brake pedal when shifting the transaxle into drive.NOTE
If a problem is detected in the air condition- ing compressor, the air conditioning indica- tor light (A) blinks. Press the air conditioning switch once to turn it off, thenonce more to turn it back on. If the air condi- tioning indicator light does not blink there is no problem. If it does blink, have it checkedat an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
Sometimes, for example after using a high- pressure car wash, the condenser can get wet, and the air conditioning indicator light (A) blinks temporarily. Wait for a while, press the air conditioning switch once to turn thesystem off, then once more to turn it back on. Once the water evaporates, the blinking will stop.
Personalizing the air conditioning switch (Changing the function set- ting)
NOTE
NOTE
The factory setting is “Enable automatic air conditioning control”. While the mode selection dial is set to the “ ” position, the air conditioning will run automatically, even if the system is set to “Disable automatic air conditioning control”, in order to prevent windows from foggingup.

To remove frost or mist from the windshield and door windows, use the mode selection dial (“ ” or “ ”). Use this setting to keep the windshield and door windows clear of mist, and to keep theleg area heated (when driving in rain or snow). 1. Set the mode selection dial to the “ ” position. 2. Set the air selection switch (A) to the out-side air position. 3. Select your desired blower speed by turn- ing the blower speed selection dial.4. Select your desired temperature by turn- ing the temperature control dial.
Operating the air conditioning system (automatic mode)
NOTE
Set the temperature at about 25 under normal conditions. While the engine coolant temperature is low, the temperature of the air from the heaterwill be cool/cold until the engine warms up, even if you have selected warm air with the dial. To prevent the windshield and windowsfrom fogging up, the vent mode will be changed to “ ” or “ ” and the blower speed will be reduced.

1. Park the vehicle in the shade wheneverpossible. Parking in the hot sun makes the vehicle interior extremely hot which then requires more time to cool. If it is neces-sary to park in the sun, open the windows for the first few minutes of air condition- ing to expel the hot air.2. Afterwards, keep the windows closed when the air conditioning is in use. The entry of outside air through open windowswill reduce cooling efficiency. 3. When running the air conditioning, make sure the air intake, which is located infront of the windshield, is free of obstruc- tions such as leaves. Leaves collected in the air-intake chamber may reduce airflow and plug the water drains.
If the air conditioning seems less effective than usual, the cause might be a refrigerant leak.Have the system inspected by your authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer or a repair facility of your choice.
NOTE
While the mode selection dial is set to the “ ” position, the air conditioning com- pressor will run automatically. The outside air position will also be selected automati-cally. While the “ ” position is selected, you cannot turn the air conditioning off or select the recirculation position. This prevents thewindows from fogging up. To defog quickly, direct
the air flow from the
side vents toward the door windows.
When defrosting, do not set the temperature control dial to the maximum cool position. This will blow cool air on the window glass and fog it up.

NOTE
Air conditioning system refrig- erant and lubricant recommen- dations
CAUTION The air conditioning system in your vehicle must be charged with the refrigerant HFC-134a and the lubricant SUN-PAG56. Use of any other refrigerant or lubricant will cause severe damage and may require replac-ing your vehicle’s entire air conditioning system. The release of refrigerant into the atmo-sphere is not recommended. The new refrigerant HFC-134a in your vehi- cle is designed not to harm the earth’s ozonelayer. However, it may contribute slightly to global warming. It is recommended that the old refrigerant be saved and recycled for future use.

FM signals do not follow the earth surface nor are they reflected by the upper atmo- sphere. For this reason, FM broadcasts cannotbe received over long distances. AM signals follow the earth’s surface and are reflected by the upper atmosphere. For this reason, AMbroadcasts can be received over longer dis- tances. Because of the limited
range of FM signals
and the way FM waves transmit, you mayexperience weak or fading FM reception. When the broadcast is blocked by mountains or similar obstructions, reception can be dis-turbed.
The reason why one can hear FM but not AM in parking garages, under bridges etc., is that FM signals, unlike AM signals, are reflectedby solid objects such as buildings, etc. Because FM signals are easily reflected by buildings, this can also cause reception dis-turbances. The direct signal from the broadcast station reaches the antenna slightly before thereflected signal. This time difference maycause some reception disturbance or flutter. This problem occurs primarily in urban areas.
If one listens to a weak station and is in the vicinity of another strong station, both sta- tions might be received simultaneously. Stereo reception requires a high quality broadcast signal. This means that types of disturbances mentioned previously become more marked and the reception range issomewhat diminished during stereo recep- tion. FM reception is affected by the electrical sys- tems of vehicles in the vicinity, especially those without an electronic noise suppression

device. The disturbance is even greater if the station is weak or poorly tuned. FM reception is not as sensitive to electrical disturbances as AM. AM reception is sensi-tive to electrical disturbances such as power lines, lightning and other types of similar electrical phenomena.

If your vehicle breaks down on the road, move to the shoulder and turn on the hazardwarning flashers. If there is no shoulder, or the shoulder is not safe, drive in the right lane slowly, with the hazard lights flashing, untilyou come to a safe stopping place. Keep the flashers flashing. If the engine stops, there will be no power assist to the steering and brakes, making these difficult to use. The brake booster will not work, so the brakes will not grip well. The brake pedalwill be harder to press than usual. Since there is no power steering assist, the steering wheel will be hard to turn.
Get help from your passengers, bystanders, etc. to push the vehicl
e and move it to a safe
zone.

If the engine cannot be started because the battery is weak or dead, you can start it withthe battery from another vehicle using jumper cables.
1. Take off any metal jewelry such as watch bands or bracelets that might make an accidental electrical contact. 2. Position the vehicles close enoughtogether so that the jumper cables can reach, but be sure the vehicles aren’t touching each other. 3. You could be injured if the vehicles move. Set the parking brake firmly on each vehi- cle. Put an automatic transaxle, Twin Clutch SST or CVT in “P” (PARK) or amanual transaxle in “N” (Neutral). Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” posi- tion.
If the vehicle breaks down If the engine stops/fails When the engine fails at the intersection
Jump-starting the engine
WA R N I N G Follow the procedure described in this sec- tion when using the jump cable to start the engine. Failure to follow these instructions can cause serious injury or death.CAUTION Do not try to start your vehicle by pushing or towing. Vehicles with Twin Clutch SST can- not be started this way. Pushing or towing avehicle that has a manual transaxle may overheat and damage the catalytic converter. Also, there is more ri
sk of an accident when
a vehicle is being pushed or towed.NOTE
Although the battery in your vehicle is located in the trunk (refer to page 9-11), use the joint terminal in the engine compartment to jump start the engine.
CAUTION Check the other vehicle. It must have a 12- volt battery. If the other system isn’t 12-volt, both systems can be damaged.WA R N I N G Turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK” position on both vehicles. Make sure that the cables or your clothes cannot be caught by the fan or drive belt. Personalinjury could result. NOTE
Turn off all lights, heater, and other electrical loads. This will avoid sparks and help saveboth batteries.

4. Remove the joint terminal cover (A). 5. Connect one end of one jumper cable to the positive (+) terminal of the joint termi-nal, and the other end to the positive (+) terminal of the booster battery.
6. Connect one end of the other jumper cable to the negative (-) terminal of the boosterbattery, and the other end to the engineblock of the vehicle with the low battery.
7. Start the engine in the vehicle providing the boost. Let the engine idle a few min- utes, then start the engine in the vehicle with the low battery.8. After the engine is started, disconnect the cables in the reverse order from the way you connected them.
NOTE
Open the joint terminal cover before con- necting the jumper cable to the positive ter- minal of the joint terminal. Booster battery

Use the proper cables suitable for the battery size. Otherwise heat damage to the cables could result. Check the jumper cables for damage and cor- rosion before use.WA R N I N G Be sure to follow the proper order when connecting the batteries, of:
.
Make sure that the connection is made to the engine properly. If the connection isdirectly made to the negative side of the battery, the flammable gases from inside the battery might catch fire and explode, causing personal injury. When connecting the jumper cable, do not connect the positive (+) cable to the nega- tive (-) terminal. Otherwise sparks can make the battery explode.CAUTION Make sure that the jumper cable will not be caught in the cooling fans or other movingparts in the engine compartment.NOTE
WA R N I N G Be sure to have an authorized Mitsubishi Motors dealer charge the battery. Do not charge the battery yourself. Flammable gases may leak from the bat-tery and explode. Electrolyte (battery acid) is corrosive diluted sulfuric acid. If electrolyte comes in contact with your hands, eyes, clothes, or the painted surface of your vehicle, thoroughly flush with water. If electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush them immediately and thoroughly with water, and getprompt medical attention. Always wear protective clothing and gog- gles when working near the battery. Keep the battery out of the reach of chil- dren. Never remove the battery label, upper cover, exhaust tube, or pipe. Flammable gases may leak and explode.
